  • Field Notes is a popular brand of pocket notebook, yet their staple binding isn't the most durable. In this easy bookbinding tutorial, I'll show you how I upgraded my Signs of Spring edition Field Notes with a simple pamphlet binding technique, which you can duplicate with any staple bound notebook or journal, large or small, to improve its durability and longevity.

After watching the video, I had a thought that may help in the future.
Use the binder clips before removing the staples. That should help make sure all the papers and the cover are lined up. You might even be able to punch the holes before removing the staples. Hope that helps.

Have you tried the Cognitive Surplus notebooks? They have absolutely beautiful science-themed pocket-sized notebooks like these, sewn very well

Thanks for the video. Love those bright yellow covers. If you are.ip for a new idea...why not try a "travellers notebook" type of binding? You put an elastic along the spine and can refill with new pages whenever you need. You will find tutorials for this on YT very easily.

Reusing at least some of the staple holes can help index the paper. After all, they lined up in the first place. It also minimizes how many extra holes you're putting through the section if you're worried about the integrity of the paper.
Das bookbinding is also a pretty good resource. I've found his stuff very easy to follow.

Thanks, yeah for this attempt I defaulted to what I've done with my home made notebooks. I was mostly focused on spacing the stitching evenly. But in the future I'll probably try your suggestion.

Just a thought, but maybe punch the holes before you remove the staples. The center one could come out to punch the middle one, but the other two can remain to keep the pages aligned while punching the holes.

Yeah, that's a good idea. As I planned this video, I had a few different ideas for how to approach it, and I ultimately defaulted to more or less my normal bookbinding routine. But if I could do it again, I would probably follow your suggestion.

It seems to me that if you bind it before removing the staples, then you're guaranteed that everything lines up (at least as well as before) without any extra steps.
    Anyways, thanks for the idea.
