Brilliant or just bad? Lamy Safari Violet Blackberry Fountain Pen Review

- Lamy really went out on a limb with their 2024 special edition Lamy Safaris: the Violet Blackberry and the Pink Cliff. To my knowledge, Lamy has never done this kind of multicolored (and multi-textured) design. Did they go too far? Or did their risk pay off?
In this video, I show you my Violet Blackberry Lamy Safari fountain pen and offer my thoughts on it, as well as the Pink Cliff, which I unfortunately don't have. I'm curious to know what you think too. Do you love it or hate it?

Re: bicolor pens, for years I've purchased two or more of my favorite pens to create my ideal pen, so for those who dislike one aspect of a pen and love another, just swap parts/caps/nibs and enjoy your personal creation. 😊🖊️💙
Great video. This is my first Lamy. Never cared for the clip, but this color combo sold me to try one. Got the violet and BlackBerry . Thanks
A bicolor pen is a neat idea, and the colors individually are quite lovely. Unfortunately, the person responsible for combining said colors appears to have been colorblind, especially in the Pink Cliff version.
I kinda like the violet blackberry. I think the colors actually work well together. Pink cliff though...yikes!😬
Yeah, they're not for everyone.
I like the juxtaposition.
I like the idea of the color blocking, but not the color combos they choose. My favorite is the barrel color on the Pink Cliff pen, and I also prefer the matte finish, but I dislike the hot pink. I find the accent color on the Violet pen more acceptable.. Good idea, poor execution.
"... but I bought a new pen. Oops." That made me laugh. Same here. I don't need new fountain pens, but I DO NEED new fountain pens...
The struggle is real!
I have the pink cliff, love it. I wish the violet blackberry was also matte, though. I don’t like the glossy safaris.
Yeah, I think it was a gamble for Lamy to go with the gloss finish. I'm okay with it, but the matte would have also looked really nice in that color.
I have to say: I don't like the pink cliff, but I love the violet blackberry
Hi, Lamy in my mind just keeps tip-toeing around the old Dark Lilac with all it's new purple style designs. Lamy knows everyone was/is obsessed to the point they will pay up big and that's why they re-released the somewhat similar ink. To be honest the Dark Lilac is very over hyped and there is a tone of other beautiful purples out there too especially from Diamine inks. However, even through it's not the same (and I don't really mind) the new DL from Lamy is a nice ink in it's own right. Now the pens are appealing to the purple market too and that's ok.
Chels c:
I don't like either of the 2 new colour combos. They kinda look "okay" but when you put them next to Lamy's similar existing colours, they look lacklustre and cheap.
Also, my Lamy's were my first fountain pens but are the scratchiest when compared to other newer purchases. In fact all of my other pens (Kaweco, Scriveiner, TWSBI, Hongdian, Pilots all with fine or extra fine nobs) write smoother. My Hondian, in particular is so smooooth...
I've tried three extra-fine Lamy nibs, and they were all pretty bad to be honest. I do love their fine and medium nibs though. There are smoother nibs out there, but the Safari is one of the most reliable entry level fountain pens I've found.
I do think the Lamy PR photos did these special editions no favours at all; I thought they were hideous until I saw pics from a friend of the Violet Blackberry 'in the wild' as it were... which prompted me to buy it, and I don't regret it!
My experience was similar.
I don't own a Lamy. I do like the colors. I would like to purchase both but haven't done yet.
They are pretty. They've since come out with several more in a similar theme that are more brightly colored.
I suppose a natural progression from the specials with different coloured caps and barrels but these colours did nothing for me, mainly because I'm colour blind and and any colour with a red component (like purple) gets the red filtered out!
I could definitely see these Safaris being problematic if you're colorblind.
As a first buyer of the Lami Safari, I was so tempted to buy the Violet Blackberry one but really wanted the matte finish. Now I see that the grip part is indeed matte finish! Shame I bought the Charcoal Grey one in the end. If Lami had put that detail in the description, I would have bought it for sure!!!!
The charcoal edition is lovely though!
Thank you! I have the blackberry pen and I love it... mixed colors too. The ink is phenomenal! Amazing 'copper' sheen.
Yes! The Lamy Blackberry ink is really pretty!
I'm just not sure about the new pens. I did buy the blackberry ink.
It's a cool ink!
I like it.
I bought the transparent one on Friday and put a red ink cartridge in it.
The Vista is nice!
I do my own DIY version, buying two pens of my favourite colours and swapping barrels. I get two pens and have four combinations 👍🏻
I have both these special editions Safaris and the matching inks. I have never done this before, but the colours that Lamy chose really hit my sweet spot. Re the Violet Blackberry Safari I LOVE the finish mix because my favourite is always the matte finish, yet in the context of how the pen looks, the shiny just looks so great in that deep plum and finish, and the grip is where I appreciate the matte most. For the Cliff / Pink Safari Pen who doesn't love something completely different? I LOVE the overall matte finish, and I love the color /hue combo and have nothing in my collection to compete with it. And the Cliff ink just looks great in it. It's that Blue Black that is more blue-navy than black and all my other blue n' blacks are mostly black. I have so many black pens but now as I've evolved I prefer to match my pen to my ink and never switch out, so these Special Editions from Lamy plus inks were exactly what I didn't even know I wanted! Maybe, maybe they are more for ladies, maybe but heh who cares? As I said there are enough black pens out there, and who wants another one and there are not enough purple/fuschia/pink/violet or blackberry shades, at least from Lamy - until now. So I am thrilled.
I like them. I just placed an order for the full LE 2024 set of: Cliff ink and Pink Cliff Safari, and the Blackberry ink and Violet Blackberry Safari. I look forward to putting them into my rotation.
Nice! I tried samples of the inks and liked the Cliff so much that I bought a full bottle.
Now Lamy did a bicolor Safari, they should do a Startrooper next
I’m not a Lamy fan, but I like the new Violet Blackberry.
mixing textures on the grip vs rest of the pen is meh .
It's definitely not for everyone.
I have 2 Lamy Safaris, both matte finish special editions: Dark Lilac, and Violet. I have 2 Vistas which are as close as I get to the gloss finish. I've been thinking I'd like to add a gloss finish Safari to my collection and wishing for something on the purple spectrum, but I was uncertain of the blackberry color from stock photos alone. I wanted to see it in someone's hands, and here you are! The pink cliff reminds me of the pink & gray fad of the mid 1980s, but I don't need a pen with it. Thank you for making this video!
Thanks for watching! I'm glad my video was helpful!
Hi there. Is Lamy your favorite fountain pen? I have seen a lot of Lamy content on your channel. Are you also into the finer Japanese brands like Pilot, Sailor, Platinum?
That's a great question. The Safari is my current favorite fountain pen. Because of that and recent events within the Lamy company, I've been focusing on them a lot on my channel. My next video will be about their special edition 2024 inks, but after that, I promise to give Lamy a break for a while and focus on other things. Haha
I got two of the older special edition Lamy Safari pens and swapped rings around. They're both from the 2020 collection and one is the aquamarine and the other is the violet. I also have a small piece of washi tape that is aquamarine in color on the violet pen to label the ink I have in it, which further adds to the color combination. The blackberry is a nice color combo, but the pink cliff one makes me want to tear my eyes out.
Swapping the center bands is a good idea!
I have both of the pens and the ink to match. I love the color combinations of both pens and enjoy the variations in surface finishes as well!
Well done Lamy!
I look forward to your ink swatch/review video:)
That review is coming soon! I just filmed it last night. Glad to hear you are a fan of these Safaris!
I agree that of the two plum is the more attractive. I almost bought it, but alas chose to purchase the new inks instead. Enjoy your new pen and thanks for the video.
The new inks were a good choice. They are lovely. I have a review of them coming soon!
i love the pink cliff. i think it looks awesome, will def be buying
I didn't like it at first, but it's growing on me. If I could budget in both pens, I'd probably get them both.
Cool! I ordered a violet/blackberry in EF last night. I hope it looks better in person than it does in the pictures.
I think it's lovely. It's so hard to capture the subtlety of colors like this on a camera.
@@DowntheBreatherHole Yeah. Has there been any changes in the nibs? I hope the extra fine is really extra fine.
@@DowntheBreatherHole I just received it today. It looks pretty. It writes good also for an EF. I have to make fast circles about the size of a quarter several times to get the ink to stop. That sounds pretty good for an EF to me.
My granddaughter's favorite colors are pink and purple. So, I have to buy a pink one now or this one will be hers if she sees it. LOL!
Love the new Safaris.
Yay! Glad to hear it.
I’m in the “love 'em” camp ! Very unique, well made pens and the nibs rival any high end 14k writer !
They definitely are good writers!
