I try to help with understanding tech, getting the most out of tech you already got and mixing it with new tech without breaking the bank.
Upgrading often comes with a lot of hidden costs and headaches. Most of the time it makes all your other stuff obsolete and forces you to upgrade them to. But sometimes it’s the opposite and some new tech elevates existing tech.
I put my money where mouth is and record these videos on a mix of old and new gear. Budget gear. I will make reviews and tutorials on these products too.
Come visit this channel before it's to late ;)

What tool did you use to pry away the letters and can you re-apply them later?
A needle 🪡 and if you are careful you might be able to. But it is not guaranteed. But all you need is a thick needle.
You look like a piece of soul.
That’s what I’m aiming for😂
If “soul” is your game, get a Leica M.
That’s to cool for me. I like to apply soul over time✌🏽🤪😉
Sony is like the douche, Wall Street bro that shows up to a party. Fuji is the super cool, artistic bro who you wanna hang with. Panasonic is the weird, yet very cool uncle who always has fireworks for some reason. Canon is your dad wearing flip flops and black socks. Nikon is your grandpa who everyone respects, but doesn’t talk to enough.
Great comment 😂 I like to manipulate the different personalities and broaden their range 😉 and the super cool guy never did it for me🤪
What about Leica?
@@hermanzhang6494 Leica is the very rich uncle who only talks to certain people in the family who he deems worthy. He always shows up to the family reunion in his Rolls Royce Phantom, with a driver of course. I shot with a Leica Monochrom for a while, and while the photos were beautiful, I could never justify the cost when compared to B&W mode in a Fuji or Panasonic.
@@SomewhatAbnormal your comments fit my narrative though 💪🏽👍🏽❤️
@@OldGuyNewTech hah! Well, it's really just a bunch of BS. I'm sure that each platform excels in a way that others do not. I usually bias towards the underdog, which is what I see with Fuji and Panasonic. Also, I used to work for Agfa, specifically when the first consumer digital cameras were being released. Agfa was the underdog that never made it.
4:01 "And this one, I use for all my personal stuff. So I can wear and tear off it for many centuries" Are you a vampire? Most people don't live that long ;P

Oh man. Camera is just a tool ;-) Use the tool that works for you the best. Everyone saying about “coLoUr sCieNcE” knows not enough to even start talking about colours ;-)
Get some soul and cable manage your cords 2:06
Never😎😂🤪✌🏽
Sony needs to fix that rotten terrible color. Let's not even talk about the awful menus . Traditional manufacturers seem to understand camera ergonomics much more than Sony. Yeah the tech is impressive, but not useful to me.
Whatever fits you go with that. I have tamed the Sony colours and for weddings the keeper rate sold me. For private stuff I don’t use Sony actually 😉
not sure what you are talking about, sony colors are fine, in accuracy of color representation they are amongs the best around. And menus? Its well structured and easy to navigate (cant say the same for Nikon for example). Also not that menu is needed anyway after first setup too often, after initial setup there is little reason to go into menu anyway. For everything important there is a button. As for ergonomics their later models (A7RIV and onwards) their fullframe cameras have the best ergonomics there is and even the old A7II is really great camera to handle despite grip being too shallow (thing they improved significantly with each generation). There is a reason why both Canon and Nikon followed Sony and no longer have buttons on the left next to screen.
Ergonomics canon wins hands down. No arguing there. But I got use to the Sony😅
@@OldGuyNewTech thats debatable. I found Canon awkward to use. I mean the body feels good in hand, its very well shaped (although not really that much different than Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, Panasonic or even Sony back in DSLR/SLT days), but control wheels and buttons placement is bad and for me thats the most important part of ergonomics and the reason why I concider current Sony the best.
Skill issue.
No way to even contemplate nontraditional manufacturer. So, I go with Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Olympus.
Yeah, only that the Sony camera division is actually Minolta, trad af if you ask me.
Whatever fits you go with that. I have tamed the Sony colours and for weddings the keeper rate sold me. For private stuff I don’t use Sony actually 😉 and it’s not to exclude any brand it’s a general thing
@@arminbreuer7968not sure if they could be called minolta anymore. Sony went their own way around 10 years ago with STL system and after shift to E-mount only Minolta heritage left in Sony camera division is IBIS

Does this work with the Apollo Twin? I have a thunderbolt two plugging into an Apple thunderbolt 3 port adapter then into my thunderbolt 4 and it’s not working, any help?
You need a dock with power in between. Just Like in the video. You need the Dock to power your devises. The adapter can’t transfer power only data.
I have a short explaining the power issue specifically.ua-cam.com/users/shortsYfHWiL0Q900?si=oeuMgXdlWGTncvNx
@@OldGuyNewTech well the Apollo is already powered itself so that’s why I’m confused that it doesn’t work?
Hi! thank you so much for this. I have a few clarifying questions… 1. Do you know if it will work with windows PC as well? (iMac 21.5 inch late 2013 and a windows PC) 2. Do I have to download Quick Camera on the iMac that will be used as an extended monitor or the M1 Macbook (or PC)? 3. For extended mode, did you change the display setting on iMac or the M1 Macbook? (I watched videos many times but couldn’t tell) Thank you so much again. This is a huge help!
hi 1. Yes it works on about all computers that have USB ports 2. the software (quick camera) is downloaded on the Imac(device used as a screen) 3. you Change the settings on your M1 like all other screens. Good questions! you are right thes facts where not specified and i just assumed people could figure that out. but thats always a question. how much should you go in to details. to much you put people of and to little people get confused. But this Shows you are prepared and that makes me happy to help :) thanks for asking cheers the Old Guy
Thanks for the HELP. This issue ruined my recording. Thought it was OBS. Thanks again for the help.

95% of the studio display? lol no!
If you talk resolution it’s only 50%. But for convenience it’s 95%. But depending on what you’re talking about I would agree with you. But depends on the context 🤷🏼♂️
does this work with imac 2017 5k?
Yes these solution works on all Mac’s and even pc’s to😉
WTF, I am hearing that power issue for TB 1/2 for the first time. Are you really 100% sure about it? Is there any technical document by Apple or any other source? To be honest, I am still not convinced, because even the older FireWire standards had power... and if the next interface is more modern and advanced, why should it not supply power anymore... BTW, did you try any other external drives or enclosures? Did you try a different connection order? As far as I remember, there were TB1 Lacie drives, that work with their simple TB cable. No extra power needed. (I will try to find some more info on this matter)
A tb 1 and 2 do transfer some power. But it’s not as straightforward as the tb 3 and 4 power supply. Using that power transfer was not standard on tb 1 and 2 like it is on the 3 and 4 protocol. On 1 and 2 it was an option and only up to 10watts I think. And the adapter does not transfer power either even if the tb 1 and 2 were able to. So its an adapter problem to. support.apple.com/en-qa/111753 Scroll down and read the last section.
the copper-based version of the Thunderbolt protocol can deliver 18 V at 550 mA (9.9 W max). Presumably all Thunderbolt cables are built to this spec and can handle that kind of power passing through them. Whether the connected device can supply that kind of power is another question that can only be answered by looking at specific devices. Thunderbolt over an optical, instead of copper, connection would not be able to carry any power with the data signal. I note this only because Thunderbolt was original designed to be an optical protocol; though its since been adapted to copper.
@@OldGuyNewTech OMG, I never thought about that over-priced Apple Adapter being the culprit. Really hard to believe that Apple produces and promotes such a limited product... not to mention that it is the one and only adapter. What did they think ?!?!? 🙈🧠💨🤥🙃🤮
I’ve only just found this out as well. It’s only cost me about £550 for my mistake. That’s about £50 for apples TB2 to TB3 adapter plus TB2 lead. About £200 for a Caldigit elements hub. £200 for a 4tb SSD and about £100 for an external ssd enclosure. The hub lights up with a blue light when the TB cable from the Mac is plugged in and the enclosure lights up green, but alas no SSD showing on the desktop. Thought I was finally going to get some use out of the remaining 5 TB2 ports on my Mac. Clearly I was wrong.
Sir, how is this adapter for still photo? I have hear its not really good. My lenses, ef 50l/85l2/135l
For canon lenses and photography both sigma and this adapter should good. Even on the old drainpipe it’s fine on both.

Does anybody know if usb c 3.2 speeds of up to 10gbits are achievable? Like a Samsung T7 would make use of?
It Will support up to 10gbit White the adapter in the video
But even though thunderbolt 2 can run 20gbits you can still only get 10gbit when adapting to usb devices. But you can get 10gbit on both
I was too late to post the comment under your new video: Still can here the high frequency. Checked other videos and it's audible in all 9 videos over the past two months. No noise in older videos (from 5 months ago). Try using a spectrum analyzer in your DAW to pinpoint the source of 5200Hz and 10200Hz signals
thanks i had 2 issues a power issue with phantom power mics witch is solved with a power brick. and the high frequency witch was another source. thats why i took down the video. It only solved the power problem and still had the whining frequency. had my son listen at he could hear it and i could not. thats why its not noticed by many. i can't hear the frequency. but i tried a different mic when i solved the phantom power problem and then he could not hear it either. i found out that i can't hear 10khz up and did not pick up on it before i had my son listen. but again thanks. i will still give you a shout out in my next video and you can give feedback on that with the new mic then. the old guy has got old ears. thanks again

if it runs bootcamp keep it as a second device after you upgrade ;)
YT already deleted two of my answers where I recommend to check so called "ground loop"
I Think you are on to someting . I hooked up a panthom power mic at it was all bad
I found the solution. its related to ground loop. but its more a power supply issue. running it trough a dock mostly lowers the watts to 85 where the thunderbolt ports in the computers are higher than 95 watts.the noice was more obvious with the phantom power mic attached. thanks for the sparring. there is a new video in all of this. You are getting a shout out in it. most comments pointing out problems are not very constructive. but your contribution is a great example of the good things about a UA-cam community . thanks again

Great video! Liked and subscribed. I made a video on how to internally convert the Thunderbolt display to USB-C for data and also for charging, so you can charge from the display like its original design. It's here if anyone is interested - ua-cam.com/video/38dEhDV6gZY/v-deo.html
Videos and images look great on the 27" Thunderbolt display, but fonts are simply blurry, even if you activate HiDPI with BetterDisplay it only gets slightly better. And because of the connection, you can't connect it to Displayport or HDMI to get it with a Display Link Dock on the M1. You would have to use the older Cinema Display, which costs $50-100 more. So think carefully about what you are using the display for. It's nice to look at for a price of around $200, but the Font is scaled very roughly.
Thanks for the input Sir. I use it for video and photo edits with no problems. Plenty Sharp for my needs. And the missing headache from great compatibility and the price leaves it with no other competitive options. But you might be right about fonts and therefore adding to the topic and doing so in a positive way👍🏽 cheers
@@OldGuyNewTech For photo and video editing, the Thunderbolt Display is an ideal screen at a low price with a great design and high-quality materials. They can even be operated dual on the Mac Mini M2!
The fonts are absolutely fine on my two displays. You can use the native HiDPI without any external apps. It’s in the settings.
@@ghost-user559 then you either use the Cinema Display with Windows or have never had a 5K display on your Mac for comparison ;)
@@kyrbies No I use two Thunderbolt Displays daisy chained on Sonoma on a M2 Pro Mac Mini. And I use the native HiDPI settings. But that doesn’t even effect fonts in programs, it only makes the GUI scale differently. If you use the HiDPI setting on a 1440 27 inch panel, you are still within the retina spec. It takes the gui and at 1440p (the display’s output) and scales the gui to 720p at twice the pixel density. The font issues are only a problem at 4k, because you need a 24 inch panel like the iMac to actually scale the gui. There are charts you can look at for the “retina scaling Goldilocks zone” for different sizes and resolutions.
It sounds good but does this adapter work for the Sony fx3 and alpha ?
i have reported issues with the new ai chip cameras and tamron lenses mostly. the fx3 should be no problem. cheers

Any advice on how to solve the issue of dual monitors slowing down my brand new Mac Studio M2 Ultra?
@@AngeliqueStidhum compatibility issue as stated in my other reply. Sorry. Even some file formats will mess Mac’s up. Had to convert some videos I got for a presentation to a different file format. The original file froze up my Mac when I played them over hdmi to a projector 😅 converted them in fcpx to Apple TV format and wupti no problems. M1 MacBook Pro max was used
Are you familiar with the dual display lag some are experiencing with dual 4k monitors? Will this fix that?
The thunderbolt 5 standard is announced but not out yet. And I’m familiar with problems with 4K monitors freezing on macs and having hiccups. I’m not aware of the problem on pc. But Mac’s play best with 2,5k or 5k and for a totally seamless experience the Mac screens or of brand screens that have been sold on apple’s site are the ones to get. I use thunderbolt displays and the have flawless compatibility
And for most thunderbolt 5 is not worth the investment for many years 😉
@@OldGuyNewTech I have LG ultrafine 4k ergo IPS 32un880-b Two of them as I am visually impaired and need the size to see properly
@@AngeliqueStidhum but if you are a Mac user you have the answer to your problem. Apple doesn’t always play seamless with all monitors and studio displays are expensive. But TB 5 probably won’t fix that issue sorry.

Nice! They are still a bit more expensive than the thunderbolt. And I’m pretty satisfied with the thunderbolt. But I would like to try the 30” Cinema Display and compare it to the thunderbolt one. Your thoughts? Thanks for sharing. Cheers
Hi. What about latency difference between capture cards?
Depends on the capture card and the resolution. Not much on HD ones in general. I don’t notice it.
Got a 27 Thunderbolt for 100 USD, it’s in great shape and bright. Got my MBA M1 hooked up to it, makes a great small office. I wish there was a way to hook it up to my old Mac Pro 5,1. Nice monitor, I might get the 30 inch Cinema Display later this year. Those are also well made, much better quality than all the plastic junk out there. Cheers from Cali.
Thanks for Sharing✌🏽 great price! yeah it’s sad they don’t connect well pre thunderbolt connections. But on the other hand the connection makes them future prof. Never tried the 30 inch but though. If I had the space I would love to though 😅 cheers
@@OldGuyNewTech I've heard nice things about the 30 inch display. Anyway, this monitor is more than enough for people's needs. Truth be told I might get a second one. Stay safe.
While, Apple, Inc. still supports the 27-inch Thunderbolt displays, I own their older 2010, 27-inch Cinema LED (none thunderbolt) display where everything is the same except that, on the back (mine has no Fire-wire 800 port, just three (3) USB "A" ports. Please note, if using my model on a M-1/M-2/ or M-3 processor computer, you also need a none Apple cable with mini display port on one end and a USB "C" port on the other end (smile...smile).
@@transitengineer yes this is the same display but with different connectors. It was not made for more than a year 2010-2011 and then the thunderbolt version was released. In this video I’m not including this display to avoid confusion. But it could be a good option depending on your Mac ports. If you own a thunderbolt Mac I would try to get the thunderbolt version for more easy adaptation. Essentially if you can get the thunderbolt version for 100-150$. Thanks for commenting. I must admit I only have 80cm cables as the 2m cables are so expensive. But 2 meter cables only supply 20 Gbps in thunderbolt 3. You need 4 for the full 40gbps. Active cables can run a lot longer, but due to their construction, they can also cost a lot more to acquire. Also, especially in the case of active Thunderbolt 3 cables, not all of them supported USB, so be aware that the support for the other standards may not necessarily be present. So it depends on the cable. So you should be able to find a 2m cable that can run usb up to 10gpbs. I would buy a thunderbolt 4 cable if you invest in a new one. They are backward compatible and make you more future prof. Hope this helps. Cheers the old guy
