Keep to these 3 docking stations for peace of mind. they will work with the M1 macs to.
CalDigit Thunderbolt Station 3 Plus, OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock, Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Dock.
the CalDigit TS3 Plus Dock is even sold through apple's own website, at a fair price. here is the link:
    recomended dock:
    www.owc.com/solutions/thunder...
The price to preformance is the best value and i have had no issues at all running it with my Macs
A thunderbolt 2 port can transfer data 4x the speed of a usb3 port. And it would be nice to make use of it. There is a problem in using adapters for new thunderbolt 3 and usb-c devices though. This video addresses the problem, tells you why it don't work right of the bat, and shows a solution to this problem.

Hi Old Guy ~ To preface, TB = Thunderbolt. As you seem to have a good understanding of Apple cabling, in general, I was wondering what your thoughts are on this Apple cabling dilemma. Specifically, I'd like to use our older MacBook Pro 15 (with TB 2 ports) with the newer TB3/TB4 cables. Why? Well, when one considers the insane cost of TB cables, it makes zero sense to invest in old TB cables, which are also very expensive. In addition, it's always a great idea to buy things that have a longer life-cycle (aka, "future proofing"), so I'd rather put our limited funds into more modern cabling ... and I just thought of a specific example. What if you wanted to use the older TB2 ports with a newer TB3 or TB4 external drive? I realize that the transfer speeds will be limited by the "weak link" in the transfer path, but, once again, I'd rather put our hard-earned into newer cabling. I've both liked and subscribed, so please keep on making these informative videos. Cheers! 👍

A FireWire port do supply some power though. How much depends on the version of the FireWire. So the dock might not be needed depending on how much power the device needs.
1.5 amps and 8-30 volt. And that will not be enough to run a hard drive like in the video. So you will still need the dock😊 so same principle different adapter

WTF, I am hearing that power issue for TB 1/2 for the first time. Are you really 100% sure about it? Is there any technical document by Apple or any other source? To be honest, I am still not convinced, because even the older FireWire standards had power... and if the next interface is more modern and advanced, why should it not supply power anymore... BTW, did you try any other external drives or enclosures? Did you try a different connection order? As far as I remember, there were TB1 Lacie drives, that work with their simple TB cable. No extra power needed. (I will try to find some more info on this matter)

    • @OldGuyNewTech

A tb 1 and 2 do transfer some power. But it’s not as straightforward as the tb 3 and 4 power supply. Using that power transfer was not standard on tb 1 and 2 like it is on the 3 and 4 protocol. On 1 and 2 it was an option and only up to 10watts I think. And the adapter does not transfer power either even if the tb 1 and 2 were able to. So its an adapter problem to.

the copper-based version of the Thunderbolt protocol can deliver 18 V at 550 mA (9.9 W max). Presumably all Thunderbolt cables are built to this spec and can handle that kind of power passing through them. Whether the connected device can supply that kind of power is another question that can only be answered by looking at specific devices.
Thunderbolt over an optical, instead of copper, connection would not be able to carry any power with the data signal. I note this only because Thunderbolt was original designed to be an optical protocol; though its since been adapted to copper.

About £200 for a Caldigit elements hub.
£200 for a 4tb SSD and about £100 for an external ssd enclosure.
The hub lights up with a blue light when the TB cable from the Mac is plugged in and the enclosure lights up green, but alas no SSD showing on the desktop. Thought I was finally going to get some use out of the remaining 5 TB2 ports on my Mac. Clearly I was wrong.
