Hello, I'm SectionSkyly! I'm a huge fan of the Phantasy Star Online series, which I've played for the last 20 years! While I'll mainly cover things related to Phantasy Star, I will feature other games occasionally too (especially action oriented games, like Monster Hunter for example).
If you're looking for a laid-back, informative video style (especially for Phantasy Star!) then feel free to check out my channel! I also stream twice a week here on UA-cam and over on Twitch.

In preparation for some PSO2 content I have planned, I wanted to reflect back on 2006's Phantasy Star Universe, which suffered one of the worst launches of any Phantasy Star game. I decided to see how the perception of the game has changed over the years, and why I think it was criticised unfairly. Ysok (the guy responsible for the greatness that is Episode 6) left Sega few years ago So, kinda grim to say but I dont have much faith in New Genesis unless Arai finally wake up and get serious
one of the best mmo in my life community wise each race meant something with they unique ability lv up meant something no booster or easy crap or lazy ppl . gender lock and morality no dude in skirt and weirdo like ngs is flooded with that crap. play a techer and healing system actually meant something yeah the 2005 to 2010 community was the best era ever. base pso2 and ngs community and the modern clementine community is pure antisocial garbage aint gonna lie have been around the block and i can see the horrible change even psp psu had better comunity lol its sad if psu had ngs combat it would be perfect
The West Relationship with the franchise is without a doubt a strange one, although there appears to be a pattern to it. Could honestly say despite starting of with NGS, Classic PSO2 was really the gateway into the Phantasy Star Franchise from World of Warcraft. I have heard from a friend of the Balancing issues so terrible in Episode 5 that nearly everyone was playing the same class, what surprise me more, because of that class, PSO2 mechanics were completely altered. It was thanks to Devil May Veteran whose name I must never mention, gotten me to enjoy both Classic and NGS by changing my overall Philosophical outlook of the gameplay, instead of playing it as if it were an average Online RPG, I've started playing as if it were a Stylish Hack & Slash, surprisingly it was super effective for my overall progress in the game as well as personal enjoyment, especially with NGS. I would not say "I wish I found it earlier." But I am immensely happy I found this game when the stars were perfectly align.
I did the fan story translation for the first 11 chapters of PSO2, i had to drop out of after.
The demo for Xbox 360 I blindly downloaded for free as a kid without having any real knowledge of MMO culture or mmos other than runescape. My first mmo experiences were on phantasy Star and runescape. I’m 32 now but played phantasy Star since 15 maybe. Just glad its back to the west. I have complaints like everybody else but I really feel it shouldn’t be taken for granted that it’s even available. More people especially in the west could realize phantasy star ⭐️ can be adaptable unlike any other video game. I just can’t wait till they introduce more fantasy to the sci-fi New Genesis version. More fantasy as in “fairies” “alternate timelines with knights” all sorts of medieval stuff like in PSO2.
Like anime medieval shit always caught my eye especially stuff like Tactics Ogre aesthetics.
This game embodied imersion. Planets having their own atmosphere and ecosystems. finishing dungeons and coming ou in a completely different zone and place. A ReMaster of this exact setup we be bonkers, I preferred the controlled hub spaces of the different planets with dungoens that lead different routes everywhere. PSO2 tried to take a lot of the foundation but it didn't feel the same in execution. I do love all of them for their own reasons. But hands down PSU was my favorite and I started on Xbox Live PSO
I met some of my best friends in a discord from asking them about PSO2 back before global released and having them help me register. I'd never actually catch up with any of them in terms of progression, but we always made time to meet at the casino for Black Nyack or visit their rooms to see all the decorations they'd put up. I remember one friend tricking me with that reaction time minigame whenever I tried it with fake "PRESS IT NOW!!" messages lol It wasn't the same after global launched. Some of us switched over and others stayed in JP. And once the base game lost support in favor of NGS, almost everyone hopped off in favor of other games, including myself. We're still a close and very big friend group, playing several different games together and rotating between them regularly. I actually meet a couple of them IRL for conventions or just to hang out every now and again! While the game may not be what I remember, I won't forget what it's done for me in finding a wonderful web of friends to get stuck with ❤
Thanks to microsoft we got to see pso2 in the west and it was a very good ride, i used to play the jp version it was tedious process has the content was slow to drop, but playing it all over again and gotta meet new people was indeed a good ride and Sega little did they know how a game they feared that would flop in the west would be their biggest game at the time, but sadly Sega has usual put money in front and made a rushed project called pso2 ngs and forgot that an mmo is suppose to have hours of gameplay and not 5h, it was the biggest failure of the franchise and that is what happen when u go too greedy.
I don't really use photon arts anymore there's no point the attacks still weak as hell. It's monsters attacks that harms the monster while I reflect
PSU was a fun game, I remember playing it on the Playstation 2 console soo many years ago. Fun, good times.
Can we PLEASE stop call IT Pso2.... NGS is NGS Pso2 IS Pso2. At same point DUDE you ALSO ARE THE PROBLEM. If you like slop then you deserve the slop you get....
lol wont be coming to the west.. idk exact numbers but there are like no more than 1000 people who truly care about PSO. why do you think pso2 almost never come over here to start with? more people in japan care for pso than USA.. not even 1% of gamers in USA bat an eye at pso
For pso2, one of the reasons was because of new EU gambling/lootbox laws that could have potentially affected the gacha in PSO2. There were apparently also questions as to whether the correct infrastructure was in place to support a western release. With regards to people not caring about PSO, I doubt there are too many other games that are 25 years old and still have routinely active servers. Regardless of whether a remaster would come to the west or not, people would still play it if PSP2 Infinity and JP PSO2 were anything to go by.
PSO2 is a big entry point for many including me, I play it since 2012, classic PS and PSO is not well known where I live and still in NGS. the game isn't as bad as people make it out to be, it just took 6 month each not that big update...... but I've fun so far, it F2P so I don't have to subscribe like certain game
I said it once ill say it again Underrated gems
I don't know if it's an unpopular opinion...but i just want my pso2 base back with full focus on it : /...
Yeah, I remember seeing the English/global website back in 2013, was gonna try it out after seeing gameplay of it cause it looked pretty cool, only to find out it was JP only and was wondering why there was no English/Global version. Sure, I could've tried to make a JP account and play it with tweaker but this was knowledge I did not have at the time. Fast forward to it's reveal, instead as a teenager back then, now as an adult(26 now). Saw the reveal, and wondered why the name sounded familiar, saw gameplay of it and was like "Oh shit, this is *finally* coming out after so many years!" PSO2 was my first entry point to the franchise, I like the game, same with NGS which I'll touch on later, and I have quite a bit to say. I remember leaving my PC on overnight to download PSO2 from the Microsoft store, and jump right in the morning it released, and played it for the rest of the day, told my guildmates from Elsword about it, got them to try out the game. There were many times where we would literally play until we saw the morning sun rise, I still hear the announcer going "ONE MORE" every time I share this, and we're all sleepy like "You said ONE MORE the last 20 times!" As for NGS, I do like NGS. If I did not like the game, I wouldn't be playing it, nor would I be engaging with it or the community. If anything the main complaint I have with NGS is I wish there was more to do and engage with instead of getting a major update every 6 or so months and be done with it in a week, and more so as of recent, in a day. The gap between content drops and releases is waay to freaking long. I'm no stranger to being done with all the new content in a day when releases are months apart, because even games like FF14, despite it having 10+ years of content, is the same too, eventually you will be caught up with everything and be satisfied with what you grinded for in older content where you will be done with the new stuff in a day. The main difference is that I think is massively overlooked, is that there is things in the game that you can do. I bring this up because I had a convo not to long ago before watching the vid about this part, I brought up other things he can do and that there is a lot, and you will have to go and pursue that, but if that's not what you're into then it's simple as that. Back tracking to NGS before I kinda went a little off topic, having to wait a decade for PSO2 might've done more harm than good, at least when it comes to onboarding new players to the franchise. Now, say a game comes out and it's a eastern release first, then a global(Which for a while when it comes to eastern games, we've moved away from that, because back in the day, this was absolutely not the case, at least not unless your name is Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts, or Resident Evil or Monster Hunter, it was a different time back then). When NGS got announced, not only did I saw people looking forward to it, but equally I also saw a lot of "We only just had this game for a year and now they're releasing another one?!". The latter definitely did not feel like they had played a lot of base. As much as I like base, I know I also felt the same because we kept getting fast tracked content releases of shoving a decade of stuff into one year. I don't think the game should've went open world, I've not seen open world done very well. You have a nice looking environment, but the nice looking environment has a whole lot of nothing. When they said NGS was gonna be open world, I did roll my eyes quite a bit, but still remained open minded. NGS comes out, turns out my eye roll mood turned out to be accurate... yet again, while the open world still feels abandoned and the shift back to instanced content, on the roadmap they have a field update in the works coming out later this year, so will have to see what it entails, but I still think instanced content is still the way to go. NGS had a rough first year, and while I think they definitely did turn it around, they're still trying to play catch up and it shows. That being said, there are also things NGS does pretty good. I still recommend giving the game a go despite all that. The game is free, and it's not like you're losing anything on giving it a try.
An actually fair comment on NGS? i never thought I'd see the day 😂 I think you've hit the nail on the head really. Some players on global side often directly compare NGS to PSO2, and many of them don't realise that global had 8 years worth of content rushed out before the release of NGS. Of course it was going to have more content! I think it was fast tracked to give people chance to blast through PSO2 before NGS launched (which, let's be honest was the only reason the west got global PSO2 at all). I think what annoys me the most about the NGS hate train is that it's clear many of them never played PSO2 JP. That game had HUGE gaps in content sometimes, content that most people hated (Episode 5/Buster Quests) and other issues (who remembers when PSO2 had a chance of wiping your hard drive? Oh boy). I've kind of accepted now that it's just that people like to pile on latest game, as this happens every time 😂 Thank you for actually being open minded and not writing NGS off completely. I think we're all aware the game has some problems but I still don't think it's a bad game overall.
@@SectionSkyly Yep. I don't know if it was updated but I remember there being a chart comparing the entirety of PSO2's lifespan(Going off of JP of course), and comparing to NGS when it hasn't even been out for 5-6 months yet. And the main difference I remember from that chart, a lot of the things base got added(Alliances, Fighter, Gunner, Techer, etc) in it's first few months, were already in the game(NGS) from the get go on day 1, barring some differences here and there of course. If I were to look back on the chart now comparing NGS as of this moment in the game's lifespan to base, I'd say they're both pretty similar with gaps in content.
CORRECTION. It not "free" Your time is not "Free". They say time is money. Then I say. Time spent well is not wasted. Wasted TIME IS wasted

Thank you for doing this series!! Still loving watching through these. I've never known about those voices at beginning of seabed/elevator
It's a shame that New Genesis basically killed the game. PSO2 was my favorite MMO.
FAVORITE! MMO!!!
I've played jp PSO 2 since the very beginning till the very end and while there was a mix of good and bad those were great times. There was a long period of time where I ONLY played PSO 2 daily. Global will never know those rough dryspots in japan content wise or the fact that they had to cut content starting back from episode 2 which makes my eyes roll whenever anyone from Global complains about stuff in NGS but that's a bag of worms I won't open up here. Part of the reason why NGS got a bad rap was also their strategy for both games, they made it seem like there was going to be more involvement between both games but really PSO 2 barely got anything while they focused on NGS,that was a bad move imo.
That's the thing, a lot of the complaints about NGS content schedule are from people who obviously never player PSO2 JP, where there were huge content droughts (I know for a fact we had one period of around 5 weeks with no updates whatsoever). I know people love PSO2 classic, and that's totally fine but people have to acknowledge that even PSO2JP had problems back in the day. I've never claimed that NGS is perfect or that it doesn't have issues (because yes, it does have problems), but as someone who played JP since the alpha test of classic, trying to suggest classic was perfect is so farfetched. At least once we get PSO3, people will inevitably start hating on that instead of NGS
psu/pso2 still a load of crap. they should have followed up on pszero more, that had more of the uniqueness that made PSO work so well. the whole photon arts thing also never sat well with me, which was a massive turn off. also those insanely empty wide open spaces that call themselves lobbies
I heard that pso2 was gonna come to the west but then Sega had legal trouble with a contract they signed in the south East Asia release is there any evidence to back that up or was it people cope, ing
The western release was originally planned for way before the South East Asia release as far as I'm aware, so I doubt SEA would have had much of an impact on any western release. I could be wrong but it sounds unlikely to me. As for why it got cancelled the first time around, I have no idea!
@SectionSkyly Sega officially said the infrastructure wasn't there. That sounds like a load of Bs to me corporate speak
SEA server is a big flop, the publisher is a piece of trash that already fade out of history by now I never heard of them for a while. extremely horrible localization, horrible management left the game to die
How much do you think her handgun is notation compensate her low atp? Because with that she really seems to be a great class in all situations. Even in multiplayer she seems okay (maybe not the very best here but pretty close when you think about it)
The handgun being faster does help in BB, as Heaven Striker is one of the most powerful guns in the game and is a handgun. RAmarl fits into most parties and is useful but doesn't particularly specialise. In that regard they're a little like HUnewearl.
@@SectionSkyly makes sense that's what I understood I guess hucast and racast or ramar are just better in multi
Ive tried my hardest but ive completely failed to get psobb ehpeania running. It doesnt explain anything it just refuses to run. I tried following the read me steps and ive basically butchered my computer ripping out everything they told me too. Im still stuck. Unless someone knows what i did wrong i wont ever figure this out.
You shouldn't have to do anything drastic to get ephinea running generally so I'm not really sure why it won't run for you Maybe ask on their tech support forum in case someone's had the same issue?
I can't wait till 10 years from now when we have pso2 private servers
I believe in adding on to something already good rather than replacing it.
I do remember the initial period for the EN version of PSO2, there was a playable demo featured in PAX 2012 and the official EN website at the time gave very few updates about it. I remember it being on and off with radio silence all the way up until 2015/2016 where it was finally taken down fully. Especially with how SEGA handled it's monetization model, it does makes me wonder that PSO2 had it released back then might really had a bigger effect on the gaming scene then. Still, it is right that PSO2 did successfully gave a second wind to the franchise and I do believe Microsoft, for all the problems it had, was also a part in this by finally bringing it over to the west. I think it is a little unfortunate that as much as PSO2 did bring in new life to the IP, it might also be the very thing to blow it all away but I suppose at the very least it brought me a lot of memorable years playing the game for a long time.
the game would have survived... if they didnt pair NGS with PSO2. they knew NGS would flop, and it did hard. they should have left pso2 alone and seprate. if they just made EP 7 and EP 8. NGS is a disgusting disgrace, barren, empty, boring, UGLY monster designs, ugly monsters, ugly world, ugly everything. even the characters look weird AF like plastic and elongated.
Look how they massacred our boi T .T all the memories spent on the JP server with the homies..
What do I do with all these weapons and armor I am finding? Just scrap it for meseta?
A lot of the weapons and armor can just be sold for meseta (there is an option to auto sell gear under a certain rarity). Later on you'll just keep an eye out for certain armors/weapons with fixa abilities but earlier in the game you can safely sell most of it.
@@SectionSkyly thanks, this is actually very helpful. It kept pinging me for trying to sell a 4 star but it was low level
I think the triangle shaped lights on thr water are for growing plants, maybe algae? Or a fishery of some kind? But it feeks like the purpose is probably food related.
Possibly, that would definitely make sense!
PSO2 was my entry point to the franchise and I have really fond memories of it. I think the devs could probably recapture some of that passion we all had for PSO2 if they did more goofy stuff with NGS. I loved when Sakai-san introduced the dudu punching bag and PSO2 Station had more Community interactions, even if i didn't understand a single word! Earlier this year the JP UA-cam channel had the devs host a 11 hour livestream and it was a fun watch! they goofed around and played some Dalion/PSO2 PVP. If we had something like that again I think it'd be far easier to just see the game for what it is rather than cling to spilled milk from 4 years ago.
It would be nice to see the community interaction back. It feels like when Sakai was taken out of the public eye we lost a lot of that engagement. I've never been a big fan of how NGS Headline is presented; it feels too formal and rigid. A lot of the fun seems to have disappeared. If they could bring some of that back, perhaps the community would in turn engage with the game more!
@@SectionSkyly Unfortunately Sakai said some bad stuff about episode 5 during a event in SEA and he had to publicly apologize for it during PSO 2 Station.Headline is a much more condensed version of Station for sure,a big part of the problem was covid, there was no way to do public events during that time and Headline kept that format after those few years of covid were over.
Yo I just started playing pso2 on the ps5 last night, no idea what I'm doing but having fun!
Don't worry, that's normal when you start PSO2 You'll pick things up the more you play! Glad you're enjoying it!
@SectionSkyly Haha good, yeah man loving it so far keen to see it all!
Dude I’ve just started on my Dreamcast for the first time and you saved me man ❤
Just bear in mind that Dreamcast will differ a bit from Blue Burst. A lot of the fundamentals are the same, but just be aware that not everything here might apply to DC PSO! That said, have fun with the game!
@SectionSkyly I will and thanks again keep up the great videos you are helping all over the globe!¡
Quick question ❓ how do I save?
On Dreamcast (if its anything like GameCube PSO) it should save when you quit the game from the menu!
dude this game looks very nice, the area designs are incredible maybe i will play it.
at 3:12, I was just thinking. Those are the NPCs' workstations. How do they get out from behind them? Do they hop over their desk at the end of their shift? Presumably, they could use a telepipe tech to get them out from behind it, but I would go nuts having to sit behind that console all day. Those stations look very claustrophobic. I'm probably overthinking it.
Even in NGS, most of the shops don't have doors either. I guess they just vault over the desk
I went back and played phantasy star 2 in sega hd collection. I didnt beat it though =( i think ill go back to it some day. I also have pso ep I&II.
I would like to play pso 2. But I don’t know what I’m supposed to be doing. What’s the story? And how do I go through it. I got to level 50ish by just going to the different areas but I don’t know what i was supposed to do.
This was also my experience with the game. I tried it out about a year ago and just felt I was aimlessly going through content with no sense of what I should be doing or how to experience the story. This seems to be a broader problem of live service games once they get to a certain amount of content thought because I have the exact same issue with Warframe- another game I'd feel I would enjoy if I could just get a slightly more on-rails experience of "Hey, here are story quests you should be doing, here are optional quests from that same time in the games life, here are checkpoints for when you should progress to new content." I'm hoping someone can crack the code for that (admittedly I have no searched for out-of-game guides on these things yet) as I'd love to properly experience these games.
I think PSO2 now has a thing called Story Chronicle, where you can view all the story cutscenes. I wanna say you access it from your room, but I could be wrong. I do agree that PSO2 is overwhelming sometimes and bad at telling you what you should do.
ugh my memory is vague after long year in NGS, but you need to check story mission at counter in later episode, the game however didn't require you to do any of the story
@@SectionSkyly yes, story chronicle can access it the room or directly speak with our personal operator once we unlock Episode 4
i think a really unfortunate aspect of PSO2 not coming to the west until so much later is that for a lot of ppl, myself included, Phantasy Star was just totally absent as a franchise during a big chunk of their time growing up lol. i know i would have absolutely loved PSO2 if it had come out in the west back in 2012, i had actually downloaded the japanese benchmark back then lol. if you were already a phantasy star fan or were already aware of the franchise, i imagine playing the JP version wasnt really that hard or bad of an experience, but i hadnt even really heard much about Phantasy Star except for people reminiscing about the original PSO so i never even thought to try playing the japanese version of PSO2 back then, and didnt hear much of anything about it until the 2020 global release, which is when i started playing. basically, i think sega kinda missed a generation of people outside of japan, and i think the Phantasy Star brand in the west has been hindered because of that super delayed western release. thats why i want other phantasy star games to come out!!!!! remakes and ports and stuff!!! the 2000s had a bunch of different phantasy star content leading to the release of PSO2 and i think itd do a lot to help NGS and whatever comes next
i played the JP version both on PS and PC, PS was easy all you had to do was swap regions to download it, but unfortunately it was only in Japanese, but the PC version had an unofficial translation i used to swap between the 2, once you learned all the menuing with the unofficial english patch on PC navigating the PS version was easy. unfortunately NGS killed the game in the west. i wish they released pso2 classic servers, would love to replay it. i still play pso bb on Ephinea private server has a good community and few thousand still play there
@@seanpaterson6592 ya i actually ended up playing the JP version for a bit after the global release so i could try scion classes before global got episode 6 lol. i dont like saying a game was killed or is dead but base PSO2 definitely needs to have a standalone install that isnt tied to NGS, and base PSO2 also needs a small team to just push out small updates and rerun events!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its so sad how neglected its been post-NGS release
Really like your content man, I've never played a PS game before, but im thinking about trying one out, maybe NG because the combat looks more like my sort of thing. Anyway i look forward to the future MHW streams.
Thanks! NGS is pretty simple to get into, the earlier games are probably better for story though. NGS is pretty fun though! Will definitely be streaming MH Wilds!
NGS gonna have final boss tier next week, it a good time where a lot of people will stay active again, PSO2 story is far better than NGS but it not take time to get to end game in NGS
Sega was cautious but too cautious. They released a western version, then NGS two years after. What kind of release is that? IMO, they should have released a Western version earlier in 2013 like they had initially planned.
I genuinely think that the only reason the west got PSO2 at all was to prep for NGS. I highly doubt we'd have gotten it at all otherwise Not sure what happened with the original plan to release in 2013, but at least we ended up getting it in some capacity, which is a miracle for Phantasy Star these days.
It was pretty outrageous for them to nuke PSU under the guise of pso2 launch only to never give the west pso2 and PSU is the far better game in the end
Cautious? I think not actually. More like they are trying to open a new market but they realized too late after FF14 blew up in the west. SEGA is basically trying to play catchup to SE's FF14 and realized they needed a game that was not literally a decade old and also a new playerbase for global expansion. Then came the Genshin craze which could be the smoking gun that triggered NGS' development and speedy release.
I think SEGA should of done an expansion for PSO2 instead of NGS. A la PSO ep2 and ep4. The game should have stayed fully instance based as well. Making NGS open world was the worst idea they could have done. They followed the trend and were not true to the PSO franchise. IMO, this really hurt the game…
@@SectionSkyly most will say it is because daddy MS was there, but the reallity will always be NGS being on the oven. MS just allowed them to have a publicity favorable position besides gamepass deals and the discount on the cloud server, which sega couldve very well gone with amazon or google. It was never a daddy MS helped us situation. So, for most NGS haters, they will always have to endure the fact that they only played global pso2 base bc of NGS, liking NGS or not. SEGA always had the money (specially the huge profits from pso2) to localize and do it themselves (which they did btw), it is just that the deal with MS was incidentally good for the future plans. A marketing deal all in all, like Metaphor's.
Pso2 was great, I loved and played it a LOT on JP server. The story was ... Good I guess ? Some episode were ... Questionable at best, I didn't really like the bastardisation of Dark Falz but at its core it was still a nice story, not as heavy and depressing as PSO but still interresting enough to stay hooked. The combat gameplay was GREAT, flashy but not too over the top (looking at you ngs and your 40 meters range on sword skills) Regarding the video, I laughed at the collab' list, nice one !
Sword Hero literally has a ki blast
Frozen shooter is great in East and west tower. Back on GameCube I was very popular with my FS. Everyone asked me to do tower runs. Good times
Nice to see I was the project manager for pao private server. Trying to actually get the story out there for history sake. It was the first multiplatform game server.
I'd love to find out more about Osto Hyle during these side story quests
I remember getting introduced to this game via a demo on xbox, was enthralled and got the full game. The big problem with the 360 version of the game I remember was having to pay to subscription on top of paying for xboxlive. It resulted in me having very periodic play times because I would not resub every month, and as a result I never got very invested into the game.
Wow I can't believe PSO inspired No Man's Sky
Phantasy Star, inspiring everything.
Keep pumping them vids out hard to find new vids of pso
Will do!
i miss my j sword, never unsealed it tho. i was level 120 on my pinkal hunter before i knew what section id drop tables were.
I had one on GameCube version. Made it to 175 before I quit. Lost that memory card. Miss my rares lots of hit %. My favorite was my 60% hit frozen shooter a friend helped me farm. So much time put in pso i was a kid i couldn't exactly get a job lol. Retired at 43. Still gaming. I miss this and everquest on PlayStation 2
60% Hit Frozen Shooter is amazing!
