@Neowarshark sega ages PS1 should still be buyable. It's just Phantasy Star 2, 3 and 4 that were delisted along with a load of other genesis/dreamcast games.
The atmosphere, story, art, gameplay and music of Blue Burst is so special, There's nothing like adventuring through it, I sure hope something happens for it soon
PSO on the Dreamcast was absolutely life changing for me. Playing with other people, the music was just amazing, finally getting rare loot was the best feeling. The Dreamcast console itself was just ahead of its time when it first came out. Unfortunately all of the Rampant modding, duping and player killing messed it up in time.
Long time PS/PSO fan here. I'm not sure I'd like to see a remake of PSO for exactly the reason you mentioned in the video. I'm not sure if SEGA can recapture the feeling of the original. It had a dark story, full of mystery. At some times, it almost felt horror-lke. The atmosphere, the music, the simplicity of dungeon diving and seaching for rares. The well-written stories and interesting characters. I just don't see SEGA capturing that feeling again, especially with their recent track record. The only way I could see a possibility of this was if it was released as an offline split screen version or something like BG3 where you can create a room for 4 players to join up and play together. I don't see it being a full online game. And I say this because NGS is their flagship live-service game. It's not a perfect game by any means but it makes SEGA soooo much money due to the gatcha aspects. If you look at it from a business standpoint, it wouldn't be wise for SEGA to release another game to a fanbase that's already very divided when they could just keep updating their already available game. They just released the roadmap for NGS a few days ago. There is an unamed SEGA-title collab coming in June-July. It could be something PS/PSO/PSU related. Who knows? I'm with you though. I do wish PS/PSO would get the love and attention it desperately needs. I just keep hoping SEGA stops treating it like a red-headed stepchild and starts advertising and updating it with actual good content.
If they look the same game, made it look better, with better base character customization and smoother game play, it would be great to get a remake of PSO ep1-2,4, but we know they would fill it with other BS...
PSO is my childhood. I had 6 Gamecube memory cards just for that game. Hunting down rare items was my thing. "Yes, it dropped a red box! NO!! Photon Drop!" Good times. Sato is my mag too! This video hit me in feels. I think I had 900 hours on my level 158 female Ranger.
Sato is a cute chonky boi and I love him. As someone who has hunted Sealed J-Sword on and off for 20 years, seeing red boxes and getting PD'd was (and still is) soul-destroying
I played Pso ep 1&2 online up till the game was abandoned for years left to ourselves then finally shut down after. Was so much fun, learned to mod when I was like 12 before you could really look anything up. Had to make a friend or two to teach me hahaha. Good times for sure loads of fun. Now days idk I played the newest one on release and liked it then they changed it and made to modes and I got lost so gave up and never returned yet...
I see your point, I was crossing my fingers for all those years for PS to be revived correctly... As a solo RPG I doubt their scenario skills. I think they had a pretty delicate balance between science and fantasy in the original 4 and I liked the story probably because they couldn't say too much due to limitations. Seeing how they tend to write tons of uninteresting dialogues now, I'd be afraid to have an unnecessary wordy new PS game. (I might add that all their ideas even back then were not top class scenarios, looking at PS Gaiden or PSII text adventure proves that even back then it was pretty much hit or miss)
all they gotta do is make blue burst available on steam or something and make it compatible with xinput and modern native resolution support. It's a perfect game already, just needs some QoL for modern systems
Yeah exactly. The only issue is that some private servers are doing this already, and I'm not sure if the two ways to play the games (assuming a steam version) could co-exist long term. Would still be great to see though!
Delsabers are terrifying when you first run into one. Did you know they're programmed to target Forces and male characters as priority if you're within a set range? I believe Gibbles do something similar too. No idea why it's just those!
I used to write Phantasy Star fanfiction and I wrote four chapters called PSNV. P is for Prism, S is for Saccabus N is Nero, and V is the Village of liars on Dezo. Everything took place squarely around the first game, which will always be my favorite. I also wrote sidequests featuring Millenia from Grandia II. She was sort the tour guide of the Algol star system, which let me write stories from a different perspective then that of a native Palman. The village of liars chapter was SO. Much. Fun to write! I think I'm going to cry.
I agree with you on your stance of a PSO remake or remastered. I would absolutely love to see Sega do something with PSO…. but I think it’s highly unlikely.
Playing NGS myself, I feel there's almost a 100% chance they'll do something in game for the 25th anniversary of PSO. I'd be shocked if they didn't acknowledge it with an event or at least some outfits/weapon camos. That said, my preference would be a PSO remaster for the Switch/Switch2. I'd probably sink hundreds if not thousands of hours into that. I agree that the original MS/Genesis RPGs need a remaster more, but I feel a PSO remaster would do better and perhaps have a bit more longevity.
Definitely. There's a very limited audience I feel for a classic JRPG Phantasy Star (even though I would love to see one). I would say that a PSO remaster seems to be what a lot of people want, but whether it happens...
I'd love to be able to navigate many of PSO's background : the city always intrigued me, I wanted to explore this sci fi world and many stages had some backgrounds worth of expanding

i just recently got into the series by playing the classic games, started psobb this week on the ephinea servers and i really love this franchise. i would adore a new fully singleplayer title in the series, algol or otherwise, and since atlus is owned by sega im crossing my fingers for something to happen there!

4 is def. The best. Actually in my top 5 games of all time. However, I say to play it def after playing the three before. It does such an amazing job at pulling the stories of all the games together.
When I say Phantasy Star I usually mean the original four games. Sometimes I mean PSO or PSU, but usually I mean the original series. 1 is amazing for the time it was made. 4 is one of the best games ever made. Competes with Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6. 3 is the black sheep, but in a void I'd most compare it to Lunar, and that's big praise. 2 is just amazing.
I've been playing the sega ages version of Phantasy Star on stream and really enjoying my time with it (should finish it next week, then moving onto Phantasy Star 2). As someone who started with PSO it's been really interesting going back and checking the classics out. I'm pretty sure I've only heard great things about 4! Not a single person has said it's bad!
i would be happy to see ANY phantasy star content outside of NGS lol. i totally understand your trepidation on a PSO remake but i think it'd be worth it!!!! even just an HD collection or something.... older established players are pretty much the only ones willing to go out of their way to play on a private server; i think even if the experience was diminished on modern platforms it would be worth it to breathe some life back into the phantasy star community and for the IP to go beyond just NGS, which is something i feel it desperately needs to do.

I really hope they do actual celebrations for these games. I started with PSO for the GameCube and then played the Phantasy Star 1-3 on the GameBoy Advance. I don't know how I'd feel about them remaking PSO. Blue Burst already scratches that itch for me since it gives me the same joy I had back when I played it on the GameCube. If they're serious about reviving their their old IPs like Capcom is, they will do much more than some social media posts.

Yeah, PSO still has a devoted fan base! The server I play on regularly has 150-300 people online and during events it can top 500! Olga Flow is definitely one of the coolest bosses!
There's several private servers! The one I play on is called Ephinea and focuses on Blue Burst. There is also ragol.org for Dreamcast/PC ver 2/Xbox/Gamecube (including C.A.R.D. Revolution). For Blue Burst there's several servers. I think Ephinea and Ultima are probably the biggest. I would personally recommend Ephinea (never tried Ultima). It has a really healthy playerbase and tons of quality of life improvements without taking away what made PSO the game it was.
I think I'd be interested in a more re-make style approach to PSO, trying to stay true to form for what PSO was but updating it to essentially be its own game. Since I think any sort of direct-rerelease would ultimately probably cannabalize/be cannabalized from private servers, like you said. I'm hoping to finish PSP2i's story this year so I'll be celebrating that way, at least!
Infinity is spectacular, definitely one of the best Phantasy Star games. I get what you mean; it's almost like any remake would have to be substantially different while still retaining the core identity of what made PSO. It's a tough ask!
I too am a hunter of rares, and I too would desire nothing more than to see this game get populated into a modern console where we could all jam it together, and get all the lost added blue burst/asthenia/fan star zero content all in one gaming sphere, I know it’s a lot to ask, but I don’t see why we can’t just get a platform for all of it in the same place so we can all enjoy it together, wouldn’t take them that much to update it

Limited Run Games has just released (for pre-order) a PSO collection of goodies. They did the same for Virtua Fighter and Shenmue before the VF5 and Shenmue 1/2 remasters, respectively. I'm wondering now if there will be a PSO remaster for the Switch 2?
I would love to see a remaster but at the same time I’m equally as apprehensive, so many remasters tend to update games so much they lose their charm. Also I love how pick-up-and-play PSO 1&2 was, sure you needed to really to get into the nitty gritty details to get the most from it but even a total newbie could realise “oh it’s basically a three-note-rhythm to get a full combo” 😺👍
It’s insane but I really hope they port Nova to west, on current platforms. More than 10 years later and is still rotting on Vita. I can speak Japanese and I know people would really love it, I’m aware of the English patch in progress but I doubt we gonna see it finished soon.
Nova is one of the very few Phantasy Stars I've never played. I never owned a Vita at the time and with it not leaving Japan I just kind of forgot about it. From what I understand it's a pretty interesting game though!
I never grew up playing the Phantasy Star games. I happen to know of PSO2 back in 2012 when I was a kid. Around 2019, I got an xbox and totally forgot that PSO2 was a thing and that its on global. Then around 2022 after giving up on the game, I started focusing on base game first, and oh my god. The lore and characters and the worlds are amazing. Then I went to NGS, because I didnt know it was a thing. And its the same thing, except for the story and the world. The world is empty and the story is, well it was getting good, but its bare bone. Theres no more side quests from the NPCs and its only focusing on the characters that our protagonist had interacted with. And then nothing. Until we do get story this year, but its on August, but at least we got two bosses coming. Without knowing PSO2, I wouldnt not just meet my friends, but also learning about the lore from other Phantasy Star games. I just hope the future is really bright for NGS and that Sega just dont behave like Sonic is the only IP they have, when they have other games. Maybe Im hoping for too much but its all I got for this.
I honestly had a blast on PSO2 NGS for a year or so, had friends and we had plenty of fun with it, till they slowly started leaving and it became another mmo i play solo and got boring. I wish they would make a new pso3 and use everything that was good about pso 1 and 2, the difficulty, the dungeons, the old school style we all loved and still love, the glamour, etc etc.
You have no idea how refreshing it is to see a comment where someone liked NGS Glad you had fun with it, I know it's awkward playing an online game when your friends leave though. I'd love a new PSO too!
it could have been made by Sega but it is a project purely done through the passion of a fan (or many fans) that is officially approved by Sega. I heard the person in a podcast, he apparently had to remind Sega of what used to be the serie and why he took it as a basis for a TTRPG. Sega doesn't seem to remember the old serie
I'm happy that at least for now we have PSO2 classic and I've plenty of story content to finally finish, as well as end game gearing and goals to achieve. The gameplay still holds up and it's been a fun time playing multiplayer with a few people from the community. I can see there being an eventual drought though when that's done and I'm waiting on slow NGS content additions. PSOBB has the benefit of slower paced long-term rare hunting that probably doesn't work for live service model games, but gives it incredible longevity. If Sega could somehow either improve NGS to include some of those elements, or perfectly balance a new release around content, the live service stuff (probably necessary evil to appease shareholders) and longer term endgame / fun grind content then that would be ideal.
Personally, I'd rather they didn't do a remaster of PSO1, mainly because they'd then have to turn their attention to the likes of Ephinea and shut them down, only to drop support for the remaster in like two years. Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity, on the other hand... now _that's_ a game that would really benefit from a port to modern hardware. Just tidy up the graphics, controls and animations a bit and you have the very best version of Phantasy Star Universe around.
Yeah, that is my main fear for any PSO remaster, as someone who plays regularly on Ephinea. Having said that, private servers for PSO have existed almost as long as the game itself. I certainly wouldn't be against a modern port of Infinity though, that game is great!
I think a better question is, if PSO Episodes 1, 2, and 4 gets remade/remastered, what would you want in it? What features, quality of life improvements, and overall changes/additions would you like to see Sega do for a hypothetical definitive version of the game?
I think if you look at some of the changes made on private servers, that's a good place to start. Shared bank between characters, slightly rebalanced drop charts (some IDs got kind of screwed in the Sega charts). Even super minor things like rare drop notifications are great additions. Aside from that, higher resolution textures but still keeping the colorful, almost manga-like artstyle and other things to do at endgame would be nice. If we're talking a definitive version, maybe add in Episode 3 / C.A.R.D. battles in the lobby?
y'know what i would like? a port of phantasy star portable 2 infinity on steam, that's it. modern sega would either censor or botch any Phantasy Star remake, NGS is dead and at most we would get one costume or something so minimal it would not be worth it and remaking PSO1 would probably make SEGA want to go after the private servers. so just port PSP2i to steam with peer to peer multiplayer, i would buy it without even thinking.
I know it’s not THAT old in comparison to some other titles, but I would love a Phantasy Star Universe / AoI reboot at some point. That story arc got me SOOOO into the series, and I’ve missed it since the day the online servers shut down T_T

It'll never happen but man oh man would I go wild for an official Phantasy Star Online 1 rerelease. Playing on Ephinea is a treat but if you could just hire that team to take Ephinea and make it crossplay with console versions I'd never ask Sega for anything else for as long as I live. When it comes to updating PSO1 but keeping it faithful to the original, Ephinea just nails it. Modified drop rates might need to be made a bit stingier since you'd end up with a bigger userbase and wouldn't want everything to become worthless as a result, but the way Ephinea handled leagues, PSO2-style drops and more just feel like the perfect QoL updates to an otherwise timeless game anyone can love. Again, I know I'm more likely to get struck by lightning than get a PSO1, PSU or PSP2:I rerelease but I will continue to dream :') Ideally though we at least see a PS1-4 collection within the next year or two. It is criminal how difficult it is to get your hands on all of them and how often rereleases of any specific game have been locked to specific platforms. Just give us a gosh darned universal release of 4 of the best RPGs the 16-bit generation had to offer already damnit! I'd love a remake of one of them as well, probably 3 even though 4 is my favorite. Considering Sega have their hands full with like 6 announced games that still don't have release dates I certainly hope they don't announce anything else until some of that stuff finally releases, but eventually I'd like to see SOMETHING. If I have to settle for a 1-4 collection then I at least hope it releases before I'm dead. Also, how is NGS these days? I stopped playing just days after launch because it had so little content but I figure some 3 years later they've surely had to have done more than just add endless amounts of cosmetics to the game, right?
NGS's latest story chapter actually advanced the story and made it start to get interesting. The game has definitely improved a lot since launch, but I won't lie, it does still have some glaring issues. The cosmetic side I'm fine with (and that kind of became a focus with PSO2 classic, maybe even PSU), but PSO2 and NGS do rely a lot on the scratches. I guess since it's a free to play game Sega have to make income on it somewhere, and that's the model they've decided on. If you haven't played NGS since launch it might be worth jumping back in to see if it's for you, but I appreciate the game is very divisive. I'd love to see a PS1-4 collection! I managed to get the Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star and the Mega Drive/Genesis collection with 2,3 and 4 but Sega recently pulled that from sale so you can't buy it anymore. Getting original copies of the games (especially 4) is nigh-on impossible now without spending a fortune but there's no easy way to play them now, legitimately at least. I, like you will continue to dream of some good Phantasy Star news
I also wouldn't like a complete remake for pso, I dont think I trust them to not ruin it. And I dont think I care that much about just a rerelease on pc. I already play ephinea. I would be interested in a new Phantasy Star single player RPG.
Give us a PSO Episode 1,2,3 and 4. They need to basically just graphically overhaul the images. Keep everything else as is. PSO 3 Card Revolution needs to get the blueburst online treatment. Sega Ages for all the Phantasy Star games. Phantasy Star Zero on the Switch.
As I've been playing the Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star recently, I would love to see Sega Ages versions of 2,3 and 4! Also yeah, more love for PSO Episode 3! Game is hugely underrated.
Just introduced a friend to PSO on Ephinea. They're hooked. The game has flaws, even with the private server QoL improvements but the magic is still there. My friend hasn't gone this hard on a game since I introduced them to the Persona games.
PSO was special to me, I've been depressed even looking at the modern versions they have on PC. A proper re-release of PSO with the OG limitations and no silly crap would be amazing
Getting Infinity on Steam would be amazing since they never fucking cared to bring it out in the West for some reason. I used to spent multiple hundreds of hours on Portable 2 back then on my PSP.
Infinity is amazing! Even regular PSP2 is a good game but Infinity really is one of the best Phantasy Star games. Would be great to see it release in the west. There is a very good translation patch for it in the meantime!
Honestly? PSO could use a remaster, but I think its probably better to leave it alone. The Private Servers already are doing a great job of keeping the game alive and giving it the QoL it needs to stay relevant to the few hundred to thousand people who wanna play it. What I would love to see is a remastered compilation of the Universe games, especially Episode 3, which is partly lost to the ether from what I can gather (as most of its content was online-only). Maybe a PC/modern console port of the Portable Games could be cool (while great on their own right, I feel like the limitations of the original hardware kept them from reaching their full potential). Just remove the need for official servers and allow players to host their own runs and you have a good 60 Bucks bundle.
Hope to see the GameCube version of Phantasy Star Online come - physically - to either the Switch before its life cycle comes to end, or to the rumored Switch 2.
I'm still waiting for SEGAJP to sell PSO2 Complete Edition ver. Offline. Seeing as they sold the episode installer discs for the original PSO2 across the years, it would definitely be a collector's dream buy especially for fans.
Personally my dream thing for the 25th anniversary would be a revival of the handheld games, ideally with a title that goes back to some of the original's mechanics. Something that wouldn't be a live service title so wouldn't compete too much with PSO2/NGS. So basically a Phantasy Star Zero 2. I really wouldn't want a remake of the original PSO, though - I feel like so much of what made that title special is rooted in when it came out, before so many aspects of the action RPG genre were standardized and modernized. Heck, just look at Phantasy Star Zero - I love that game, but comparing it to PSO it's impressive how many of the original game's strengths it discards, and how many of the things it keeps just hold it back. And considering that both the general gaming public and the development team are much further removed from the original PSO than they were when PSZ was made. The best case scenario for a PSO remake would probably be something like the FF7 remake: A good game that keeps many familiar trappings, but the resulting two titles are basically impossible to even compare, much less suggest that they may be in any way equivalent or that either can "replace" the other.
It does feel like all or nothing is the only options that make sense for PSO. I'd be happy with a remaster, but private servers offer most of what PSO players want already to be honest. Unfortunately, I just don't think Sega would do a full remake (at least not FF7 style). A new portable game would be really interesting; I love PSP2 and PS Zero despite how different they are from PSO. Love some of your retrospective videos by the way!
I hate to be the bringer of bad news but given the history of SEGA the last Symphathy concerts were extremely monetized, they have a stream but they billed as much as an actual entry to the theatre to gain access to view the concert live and that's it. I think it was between 50-80 dollars. I think it's the only franchise that I know that holds concert that heavily monetize the view, doesn't happen with other games I seen. That's how they treat it for western users.
I first heard about Phantasy Star was from the PSP game, but the first PS I played was PSO2 which I sank hundreds of hours into. Then NGS came, played for almost a thousand hour on 3 different characters, but ended up quitting it, it just doesn't feel fun. Knowing Sega up until now, I doubt they gonna do something jaw dropping for the series, especially in NGS. It will probably be just some points event or some scratch or something, ugh.
Rieko Kodama was the heart and soul of the classic Phantasy Star franchise and she died in 2022, so I doubt they're planning to do anything anytime soon.
Yeah, I didn't mention that in the video, but I can understand why Sega wouldn't do another, given her passing. I know other franchises have continued after the death of someone important to it, but I suppose given the current focus on the online games it's unlikely. I would still love to see Sega Ages versions of the other classic games though, with the artwork kept intact but some quality of life improvements. Such a shame we only got the first game.
Good old days of psobb. I miss you when your servers were populated. I did greatly enjoy the Dreamcast & GameCube versions as well but psobb is just the culmination of it all.
@@SectionSkyly I played Ephinea a while back in 2022 when they had around 165 people. Played for about 330 hours or so and got my fill of nostalgia and joy. I just wish the game was huge and hustling and bustling. I know it can't be that way forever for anything. I'm sure a good number of people feel that way about Ultima and EverQuest. World of Warcraft as well.
Oh yeah, i miss when PSO lobbies were packed full of people too. I do feel that servers like Ephinea are populated enough to get games easily though, just not quite to the extent of when PSO's official servers were up.
considering they are doing a crazy taxi and jet set radio remakes so theres a high chance a pso remaster or remake is a possibility as pso is more popular then the jrpg versions, i dont know anyone who talks about the original games they either talk only about online and pso2, it would be cool to see pso ver2/bb being on the ps4/5 xbox and pc would be pretty cool.
I think the classic games have been dormant for so long that there's not much coverage on them now (last new game in the classic JRPGs was 1993!). It's sad really, and I would love to see them come back. Fingers crossed Sega have some plans!
I just want a Universe series collection for Switch (and PC and other consoles, with crossplay obviously) xD I don't want a new game in the classic series, I think it had a really good happy ending to the saga, but something like Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters would be awesome.
I could see sega rerunning the 20th anniversary event in base Pso2 since they seem to like doing stuff like that in base. As for anything in pso2ngs, it's probably going to be something really small like some kind of random login thing. As for a pso remake, it would be cool, but I doubt it, and knowing sega nowadays, it would probably be connected to pso2ngs in some way. By that, I mean it would be infested with microtransactions and loot boxes because that's the industry standard for games as a service nowadays. I know this is a negative way of looking at it, but negative is how I see the modern game industry nowadays.
I need a new pso. Or a remaster of some kind. I've played this game far too much already, i'm completely burned out of any desire to do so again. I tried doing a new playthrough the other day and I made it as far as seabed. I've been playing the same maps for far too long. I appreciated PSU and I loved PSO2 (before NGS), but nothing hit quite as hard as the original did, and I don't think i'm ever going to get that joy back.

As someone who played and enjoyed the original PSO on Dreamcast, it needs remake. PSO 2 in my opinion, is incredibly ‘grindy’. [I remember whenever we do the same thing over and over, it’s usually because we hunted for rares - the grinding comes with it.] 🤷🏻 not only that but PSO had challenge mode and a decent battle mode for people who want to do other than leveling.
Pso2 does have things like Challenge Mode and Battle mode, but they are a bit different to PSO. I do agree that the grind in PSO2 can feel just that, whereas the grind in PSO was often banging your head against a wall trying for a stupidly hard rare drop
They could release a mobile port. This way, they can excuse the jankiness with being easier for mobile phone players, because anyone that has played games on a touchscreen will know how horrible it is, and so a slower-paced game like PSO could work really well. Maybe they could work with pserver providers in some capacity with the server-side stuff.
Unfortunately the Phantasy Star online 2 game couldn't really hold my interest, I was pretty sad but I eventually found the private servers for Phantasy Star Online BlueBurst and even after falling off the daily grind for years I've kept playing it during events with a few key friends annually for quite some time. I tried playing the original JRPGs during my highschool emulator times but as an American I was exposed to the Square soft and Enix RPGs on Nintendo consoles much more so the game felt a bit jarring and I never finished it.
Having recently been playing through the Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star 1, I would definitely recommend that! I get not liking PSO2, it's such a different kind of game!
Im personally okay with no sequels/remakes of the original 4 games. Those first games had a legacy and phantasy star 4 was clearly marked as “the end” so let it be the end, why milk the franchise for profit like every other franchise to the point where the franchise resembles nothing it originally intended to be? *cough* final fantasy *cough*. It’s good to see a major franchise end. As for the online series I never played it so I can’t say if it “deserves” to end so I can’t really say much on that end, but imo the original series is good where it is, though a phantasy star remastered collection with some additional options would be cool. Reiko Kodama is also gone so the series would have a major tonal shift, RIP.
I think a Sega Ages version of the classic games, keeping the core of the games but with some quality of life improvements would be fantastic. Or...any legitimate way to play them at all (since Sega have now pulled the Genesis/Mega Drive Collection). Thankfully I picked it up beforehand. And yeah, RIP Rieko Kodama

"PSO Remake" doesn't technically rule out a C.A.R.D. Revolution mobile game! Or maybe I've accidentally manifested this dark timeline by speaking it out loud, lol. I see a couple of things for a PSO remaster (or remake): move to P2P matchmaking and a central matchmaking and chat server, like Warframe and PS Zero. Could also leverage the "franchise effect" and have a system where PSO goals reward PSO2 titles and cosmetics, like how the Hall of Monuments works across GW1 and 2. Any scratches in NGS that are PSO themed could also drive interest back to the PSO remaster or remake. I imagine if we got an N-Ragol scratch to promote the hypothetical PSO remaster or remake, it would have some people going back to check it out.
I definitely think that P2P matchmaking is the way to go for any PSO remaster. Never realised GW1/2 had a system like that, that's actually really cool. I think a NGS scratch with PSO-themed gear is likely, anything beyond that I'm not sure.
I thibk since they have provate servers keeping the OG experience alive with QoL, make a pso1 remake and do soemthing experimental and crazy with it. If people want the original magic theres a way to experience it. I think they have to capatalize on what made pso1 and u special, but reach a bigger audience like how ffxiv did. Xiv is awful now but it was my favorite mmo for nearly a decade for a reason
I just want Sega Ages Phantasy Star 1-4 (choice of either the originals or an updated version like the jp only PS2 versions) ported to Steam in English. Of course, I'd like PSOBB remastered too, but not if they go after servers.
That sounds similar to how I feel. As much as I'd love a PSO remaster, I'd be a little worried about the private servers. Phantasy Star 2, 3 and 4 desperately need the Sega Ages treatment!
Having PSO on the switch would be pretty great but I fear they'll just grab PSO2 in some way, shape or form which I'm personally not a fan... I'd take something like PSU on the Switch even, I'd love to see any Phantasy Star game I could play either online or offline at my leisure
I managed to get Yasha on the Sega Blue Burst servers, but as anyone who watches the streams will know, SJS continues to elude me 20 years later! Hunting SJS offline is really rough, good luck with that!
Played one of the Phantasy Stars at my babysitters as a kid, was quite fun. Had too much fun PKing people using a Game Shark and hacked items in PSO on Dreamcast. Enjoyed playing PSO Episode 1 & 2 on Gamecube later with friends land partying. And years later one of those friends showed me PSO Blue Burst, which was an amazing way to reexperience it. Never got into PS02, it delivered on the graphics, though I wasn't into the crazy change in pace, felt too different. The music and sounds in PSO were awesome aswell, I never forgot them, especially the telepipe noise.
At most I expect them to do a 25th anniversary login week on NGS where you get cardboard cutouts of a couple characters and sprays that no one uses with a gacha completely unrelated to the series history to undermine it
For sure, it's a very tricky balancing act getting a PSO remake right (which is why so many people either don't want one or are worried it wouldn't work out well). I'm taking a watch and wait approach to see if Sega have anything planned. I'm not that confident we'll see a remake or remaster, but I just want something good for Phantasy Star!
As someone who started with PSO2 and NGS I would love to see PSO or BB remastered/remade as frankly NGS has been a disappointment more and more with each passing update failing to live up to the story of PSO2
I personally feel that NGS's story started out very weak but the last chapter we had made a huge improvement in setting things up. Should it have taken over 3 years to get here? No, but I'm glad it's finally going somewhere. I just wish the new story chapters weren't so far apart.

Id love for a pso v1 and 2 for switch. I dont even care it its offline only. Id give SEGA sooo many photon drops if that where to happen. Watching this video made want to plug in my dreamcast and boot up pso. man i love the old school pso games.
I can understand people not getting into PSO if the classic JRPG games are more their thing. It was a big change for the franchise, in the same way that PSO to PSO2 was.

Since posting this video, Sega's LiveOps team for NGS have posted a New Year's message. Near the end it says "Thanks to all ARKS, we will be celebrating the 4th anniversary of NGS, the 13th anniversary of PSO2, and the 25th anniversary of the PSO series this year."
So, the Phantasy Star team are at least aware!

The atmosphere, story, art, gameplay and music of Blue Burst is so special, There's nothing like adventuring through it, I sure hope something happens for it soon

PSO on the Dreamcast was absolutely life changing for me. Playing with other people, the music was just amazing, finally getting rare loot was the best feeling. The Dreamcast console itself was just ahead of its time when it first came out. Unfortunately all of the Rampant modding, duping and player killing messed it up in time.
Yeah, it went from player killing in Dreamcast, to FSODing in GameCube (which was also full of dupe items!). PSO couldn't catch a break
At this point, I've completely lost faith in Sega to make anything even remotely resembling a good decision. But hey, maybe they'll surprise me.

Long time PS/PSO fan here. I'm not sure I'd like to see a remake of PSO for exactly the reason you mentioned in the video. I'm not sure if SEGA can recapture the feeling of the original. It had a dark story, full of mystery. At some times, it almost felt horror-lke. The atmosphere, the music, the simplicity of dungeon diving and seaching for rares. The well-written stories and interesting characters. I just don't see SEGA capturing that feeling again, especially with their recent track record. The only way I could see a possibility of this was if it was released as an offline split screen version or something like BG3 where you can create a room for 4 players to join up and play together. I don't see it being a full online game.
And I say this because NGS is their flagship live-service game. It's not a perfect game by any means but it makes SEGA soooo much money due to the gatcha aspects. If you look at it from a business standpoint, it wouldn't be wise for SEGA to release another game to a fanbase that's already very divided when they could just keep updating their already available game. They just released the roadmap for NGS a few days ago. There is an unamed SEGA-title collab coming in June-July. It could be something PS/PSO/PSU related. Who knows?
I'm with you though. I do wish PS/PSO would get the love and attention it desperately needs. I just keep hoping SEGA stops treating it like a red-headed stepchild and starts advertising and updating it with actual good content.

PSO is my childhood. I had 6 Gamecube memory cards just for that game. Hunting down rare items was my thing. "Yes, it dropped a red box! NO!! Photon Drop!" Good times. Sato is my mag too! This video hit me in feels. I think I had 900 hours on my level 158 female Ranger.

I played Pso ep 1&2 online up till the game was abandoned for years left to ourselves then finally shut down after. Was so much fun, learned to mod when I was like 12 before you could really look anything up. Had to make a friend or two to teach me hahaha. Good times for sure loads of fun. Now days idk I played the newest one on release and liked it then they changed it and made to modes and I got lost so gave up and never returned yet...
Well SEGA announced they wanted to focus on reviving old IPs so it’s possible they could bring back a Phantasy Star style JRPG.

As a solo RPG I doubt their scenario skills. I think they had a pretty delicate balance between science and fantasy in the original 4 and I liked the story probably because they couldn't say too much due to limitations.
Seeing how they tend to write tons of uninteresting dialogues now, I'd be afraid to have an unnecessary wordy new PS game.
(I might add that all their ideas even back then were not top class scenarios, looking at PS Gaiden or PSII text adventure proves that even back then it was pretty much hit or miss)
all they gotta do is make blue burst available on steam or something and make it compatible with xinput and modern native resolution support. It's a perfect game already, just needs some QoL for modern systems
Yeah exactly. The only issue is that some private servers are doing this already, and I'm not sure if the two ways to play the games (assuming a steam version) could co-exist long term. Would still be great to see though!

Delsabers are terrifying when you first run into one. Did you know they're programmed to target Forces and male characters as priority if you're within a set range? I believe Gibbles do something similar too. No idea why it's just those!

I used to write Phantasy Star fanfiction and I wrote four chapters called PSNV. P is for Prism, S is for Saccabus N is Nero, and V is the Village of liars on Dezo. Everything took place squarely around the first game, which will always be my favorite. I also wrote sidequests featuring Millenia from Grandia II. She was sort the tour guide of the Algol star system, which let me write stories from a different perspective then that of a native Palman. The village of liars chapter was SO. Much. Fun to write!

I agree with you on your stance of a PSO remake or remastered. I would absolutely love to see Sega do something with PSO…. but I think it’s highly unlikely.
Playing NGS myself, I feel there's almost a 100% chance they'll do something in game for the 25th anniversary of PSO. I'd be shocked if they didn't acknowledge it with an event or at least some outfits/weapon camos. That said, my preference would be a PSO remaster for the Switch/Switch2. I'd probably sink hundreds if not thousands of hours into that. I agree that the original MS/Genesis RPGs need a remaster more, but I feel a PSO remaster would do better and perhaps have a bit more longevity.
Definitely. There's a very limited audience I feel for a classic JRPG Phantasy Star (even though I would love to see one). I would say that a PSO remaster seems to be what a lot of people want, but whether it happens...

i just recently got into the series by playing the classic games, started psobb this week on the ephinea servers and i really love this franchise.

I'm working through all the classic Phantasy Stars at the moment and I've heard so many people mention 4 as their favourite. Excited to finally play it!
4 is def. The best. Actually in my top 5 games of all time. However, I say to play it def after playing the three before. It does such an amazing job at pulling the stories of all the games together.
When I say Phantasy Star I usually mean the original four games. Sometimes I mean PSO or PSU, but usually I mean the original series.
1 is amazing for the time it was made. 4 is one of the best games ever made. Competes with Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6. 3 is the black sheep, but in a void I'd most compare it to Lunar, and that's big praise. 2 is just amazing.
I've been playing the sega ages version of Phantasy Star on stream and really enjoying my time with it (should finish it next week, then moving onto Phantasy Star 2). As someone who started with PSO it's been really interesting going back and checking the classics out.
I'm pretty sure I've only heard great things about 4! Not a single person has said it's bad!
i would be happy to see ANY phantasy star content outside of NGS lol. i totally understand your trepidation on a PSO remake but i think it'd be worth it!!!! even just an HD collection or something.... older established players are pretty much the only ones willing to go out of their way to play on a private server; i think even if the experience was diminished on modern platforms it would be worth it to breathe some life back into the phantasy star community and for the IP to go beyond just NGS, which is something i feel it desperately needs to do.

I really hope they do actual celebrations for these games. I started with PSO for the GameCube and then played the Phantasy Star 1-3 on the GameBoy Advance.
I don't know how I'd feel about them remaking PSO. Blue Burst already scratches that itch for me since it gives me the same joy I had back when I played it on the GameCube. If they're serious about reviving their their old IPs like Capcom is, they will do much more than some social media posts.

Yeah, PSO still has a devoted fan base! The server I play on regularly has 150-300 people online and during events it can top 500!

for PSO on a private server, do you have a recommendation for what to play on?
There's several private servers! The one I play on is called Ephinea and focuses on Blue Burst. There is also ragol.org for Dreamcast/PC ver 2/Xbox/Gamecube (including C.A.R.D. Revolution). For Blue Burst there's several servers. I think Ephinea and Ultima are probably the biggest. I would personally recommend Ephinea (never tried Ultima). It has a really healthy playerbase and tons of quality of life improvements without taking away what made PSO the game it was.
I think I'd be interested in a more re-make style approach to PSO, trying to stay true to form for what PSO was but updating it to essentially be its own game. Since I think any sort of direct-rerelease would ultimately probably cannabalize/be cannabalized from private servers, like you said.
I'm hoping to finish PSP2i's story this year so I'll be celebrating that way, at least!
Infinity is spectacular, definitely one of the best Phantasy Star games. I get what you mean; it's almost like any remake would have to be substantially different while still retaining the core identity of what made PSO. It's a tough ask!
I too am a hunter of rares, and I too would desire nothing more than to see this game get populated into a modern console where we could all jam it together, and get all the lost added blue burst/asthenia/fan star zero content all in one gaming sphere, I know it’s a lot to ask, but I don’t see why we can’t just get a platform for all of it in the same place so we can all enjoy it together, wouldn’t take them that much to update it

Limited Run Games has just released (for pre-order) a PSO collection of goodies. They did the same for Virtua Fighter and Shenmue before the VF5 and Shenmue 1/2 remasters, respectively. I'm wondering now if there will be a PSO remaster for the Switch 2?

I would love to see a remaster but at the same time I’m equally as apprehensive, so many remasters tend to update games so much they lose their charm. Also I love how pick-up-and-play PSO 1&2 was, sure you needed to really to get into the nitty gritty details to get the most from it but even a total newbie could realise “oh it’s basically a three-note-rhythm to get a full combo” 😺👍
It’s insane but I really hope they port Nova to west, on current platforms. More than 10 years later and is still rotting on Vita.
I can speak Japanese and I know people would really love it, I’m aware of the English patch in progress but I doubt we gonna see it finished soon.
Nova is one of the very few Phantasy Stars I've never played. I never owned a Vita at the time and with it not leaving Japan I just kind of forgot about it. From what I understand it's a pretty interesting game though!
I never grew up playing the Phantasy Star games. I happen to know of PSO2 back in 2012 when I was a kid. Around 2019, I got an xbox and totally forgot that PSO2 was a thing and that its on global.
Then around 2022 after giving up on the game, I started focusing on base game first, and oh my god. The lore and characters and the worlds are amazing. Then I went to NGS, because I didnt know it was a thing. And its the same thing, except for the story and the world. The world is empty and the story is, well it was getting good, but its bare bone. Theres no more side quests from the NPCs and its only focusing on the characters that our protagonist had interacted with. And then nothing. Until we do get story this year, but its on August, but at least we got two bosses coming.
Without knowing PSO2, I wouldnt not just meet my friends, but also learning about the lore from other Phantasy Star games. I just hope the future is really bright for NGS and that Sega just dont behave like Sonic is the only IP they have, when they have other games. Maybe Im hoping for too much but its all I got for this.
I honestly had a blast on PSO2 NGS for a year or so, had friends and we had plenty of fun with it, till they slowly started leaving and it became another mmo i play solo and got boring. I wish they would make a new pso3 and use everything that was good about pso 1 and 2, the difficulty, the dungeons, the old school style we all loved and still love, the glamour, etc etc.
You have no idea how refreshing it is to see a comment where someone liked NGS Glad you had fun with it, I know it's awkward playing an online game when your friends leave though. I'd love a new PSO too!

it could have been made by Sega but it is a project purely done through the passion of a fan (or many fans) that is officially approved by Sega.
I heard the person in a podcast, he apparently had to remind Sega of what used to be the serie and why he took it as a basis for a TTRPG.

I'm happy that at least for now we have PSO2 classic and I've plenty of story content to finally finish, as well as end game gearing and goals to achieve. The gameplay still holds up and it's been a fun time playing multiplayer with a few people from the community.
I can see there being an eventual drought though when that's done and I'm waiting on slow NGS content additions.
PSOBB has the benefit of slower paced long-term rare hunting that probably doesn't work for live service model games, but gives it incredible longevity. If Sega could somehow either improve NGS to include some of those elements, or perfectly balance a new release around content, the live service stuff (probably necessary evil to appease shareholders) and longer term endgame / fun grind content then that would be ideal.
Personally, I'd rather they didn't do a remaster of PSO1, mainly because they'd then have to turn their attention to the likes of Ephinea and shut them down, only to drop support for the remaster in like two years. Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity, on the other hand... now _that's_ a game that would really benefit from a port to modern hardware. Just tidy up the graphics, controls and animations a bit and you have the very best version of Phantasy Star Universe around.
Yeah, that is my main fear for any PSO remaster, as someone who plays regularly on Ephinea. Having said that, private servers for PSO have existed almost as long as the game itself. I certainly wouldn't be against a modern port of Infinity though, that game is great!
I think a better question is, if PSO Episodes 1, 2, and 4 gets remade/remastered, what would you want in it? What features, quality of life improvements, and overall changes/additions would you like to see Sega do for a hypothetical definitive version of the game?
I think if you look at some of the changes made on private servers, that's a good place to start. Shared bank between characters, slightly rebalanced drop charts (some IDs got kind of screwed in the Sega charts). Even super minor things like rare drop notifications are great additions. Aside from that, higher resolution textures but still keeping the colorful, almost manga-like artstyle and other things to do at endgame would be nice.
If we're talking a definitive version, maybe add in Episode 3 / C.A.R.D. battles in the lobby?
y'know what i would like? a port of phantasy star portable 2 infinity on steam, that's it.
modern sega would either censor or botch any Phantasy Star remake, NGS is dead and at most we would get one costume or something so minimal it would not be worth it and remaking PSO1 would probably make SEGA want to go after the private servers.
so just port PSP2i to steam with peer to peer multiplayer, i would buy it without even thinking.

I do keep an open mind, even if Sega has put in a budget increase. All I can think of is if the NGS dev team were to put in effort, its just going to be PSO Memories again but with perhaps more weapon camos and outfits? I can't think beyond that if I'm honest

It'll never happen but man oh man would I go wild for an official Phantasy Star Online 1 rerelease. Playing on Ephinea is a treat but if you could just hire that team to take Ephinea and make it crossplay with console versions I'd never ask Sega for anything else for as long as I live. When it comes to updating PSO1 but keeping it faithful to the original, Ephinea just nails it. Modified drop rates might need to be made a bit stingier since you'd end up with a bigger userbase and wouldn't want everything to become worthless as a result, but the way Ephinea handled leagues, PSO2-style drops and more just feel like the perfect QoL updates to an otherwise timeless game anyone can love. Again, I know I'm more likely to get struck by lightning than get a PSO1, PSU or PSP2:I rerelease but I will continue to dream :')
Ideally though we at least see a PS1-4 collection within the next year or two. It is criminal how difficult it is to get your hands on all of them and how often rereleases of any specific game have been locked to specific platforms. Just give us a gosh darned universal release of 4 of the best RPGs the 16-bit generation had to offer already damnit! I'd love a remake of one of them as well, probably 3 even though 4 is my favorite. Considering Sega have their hands full with like 6 announced games that still don't have release dates I certainly hope they don't announce anything else until some of that stuff finally releases, but eventually I'd like to see SOMETHING. If I have to settle for a 1-4 collection then I at least hope it releases before I'm dead.
Also, how is NGS these days? I stopped playing just days after launch because it had so little content but I figure some 3 years later they've surely had to have done more than just add endless amounts of cosmetics to the game, right?
NGS's latest story chapter actually advanced the story and made it start to get interesting. The game has definitely improved a lot since launch, but I won't lie, it does still have some glaring issues. The cosmetic side I'm fine with (and that kind of became a focus with PSO2 classic, maybe even PSU), but PSO2 and NGS do rely a lot on the scratches. I guess since it's a free to play game Sega have to make income on it somewhere, and that's the model they've decided on. If you haven't played NGS since launch it might be worth jumping back in to see if it's for you, but I appreciate the game is very divisive.
I'd love to see a PS1-4 collection! I managed to get the Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star and the Mega Drive/Genesis collection with 2,3 and 4 but Sega recently pulled that from sale so you can't buy it anymore. Getting original copies of the games (especially 4) is nigh-on impossible now without spending a fortune but there's no easy way to play them now, legitimately at least.

I also wouldn't like a complete remake for pso, I dont think I trust them to not ruin it. And I dont think I care that much about just a rerelease on pc. I already play ephinea. I would be interested in a new Phantasy Star single player RPG.

Give us a PSO Episode 1,2,3 and 4. They need to basically just graphically overhaul the images.

As I've been playing the Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star recently, I would love to see Sega Ages versions of 2,3 and 4! Also yeah, more love for PSO Episode 3! Game is hugely underrated.

PSO is here to stay. So many of us grew up with the game that, now as adults, we have adult money and will not let it die so easily.
Just introduced a friend to PSO on Ephinea. They're hooked. The game has flaws, even with the private server QoL improvements but the magic is still there. My friend hasn't gone this hard on a game since I introduced them to the Persona games.
Glad to hear they're enjoying it! Ephinea is a fantastic way to experience it for the first time too.
a Rerelease would be king and they even just could make it a peer to peer multiplayer and it would totally be fine.

Getting Infinity on Steam would be amazing since they never fucking cared to bring it out in the West for some reason.
I used to spent multiple hundreds of hours on Portable 2 back then on my PSP.
Infinity is amazing! Even regular PSP2 is a good game but Infinity really is one of the best Phantasy Star games. Would be great to see it release in the west. There is a very good translation patch for it in the meantime!

Honestly? PSO could use a remaster, but I think its probably better to leave it alone. The Private Servers already are doing a great job of keeping the game alive and giving it the QoL it needs to stay relevant to the few hundred to thousand people who wanna play it.
What I would love to see is a remastered compilation of the Universe games, especially Episode 3, which is partly lost to the ether from what I can gather (as most of its content was online-only).
Maybe a PC/modern console port of the Portable Games could be cool (while great on their own right, I feel like the limitations of the original hardware kept them from reaching their full potential). Just remove the need for official servers and allow players to host their own runs and you have a good 60 Bucks bundle.
Hope to see the GameCube version of Phantasy Star Online come - physically - to either the Switch before its life cycle comes to end, or to the rumored Switch 2.
I'm still waiting for SEGAJP to sell PSO2 Complete Edition ver. Offline. Seeing as they sold the episode installer discs for the original PSO2 across the years, it would definitely be a collector's dream buy especially for fans.
Personally my dream thing for the 25th anniversary would be a revival of the handheld games, ideally with a title that goes back to some of the original's mechanics. Something that wouldn't be a live service title so wouldn't compete too much with PSO2/NGS. So basically a Phantasy Star Zero 2. I really wouldn't want a remake of the original PSO, though - I feel like so much of what made that title special is rooted in when it came out, before so many aspects of the action RPG genre were standardized and modernized.
Heck, just look at Phantasy Star Zero - I love that game, but comparing it to PSO it's impressive how many of the original game's strengths it discards, and how many of the things it keeps just hold it back. And considering that both the general gaming public and the development team are much further removed from the original PSO than they were when PSZ was made. The best case scenario for a PSO remake would probably be something like the FF7 remake: A good game that keeps many familiar trappings, but the resulting two titles are basically impossible to even compare, much less suggest that they may be in any way equivalent or that either can "replace" the other.
It does feel like all or nothing is the only options that make sense for PSO. I'd be happy with a remaster, but private servers offer most of what PSO players want already to be honest. Unfortunately, I just don't think Sega would do a full remake (at least not FF7 style).
A new portable game would be really interesting; I love PSP2 and PS Zero despite how different they are from PSO.

I hate to be the bringer of bad news but given the history of SEGA the last Symphathy concerts were extremely monetized, they have a stream but they billed as much as an actual entry to the theatre to gain access to view the concert live and that's it. I think it was between 50-80 dollars. I think it's the only franchise that I know that holds concert that heavily monetize the view, doesn't happen with other games I seen. That's how they treat it for western users.

I first heard about Phantasy Star was from the PSP game, but the first PS I played was PSO2 which I sank hundreds of hours into. Then NGS came, played for almost a thousand hour on 3 different characters, but ended up quitting it, it just doesn't feel fun.
Knowing Sega up until now, I doubt they gonna do something jaw dropping for the series, especially in NGS. It will probably be just some points event or some scratch or something, ugh.
Rieko Kodama was the heart and soul of the classic Phantasy Star franchise and she died in 2022, so I doubt they're planning to do anything anytime soon.
Yeah, I didn't mention that in the video, but I can understand why Sega wouldn't do another, given her passing. I know other franchises have continued after the death of someone important to it, but I suppose given the current focus on the online games it's unlikely.
I would still love to see Sega Ages versions of the other classic games though, with the artwork kept intact but some quality of life improvements. Such a shame we only got the first game.

@@SectionSkyly I played Ephinea a while back in 2022 when they had around 165 people. Played for about 330 hours or so and got my fill of nostalgia and joy.
I just wish the game was huge and hustling and bustling.
I know it can't be that way forever for anything.

Oh yeah, i miss when PSO lobbies were packed full of people too. I do feel that servers like Ephinea are populated enough to get games easily though, just not quite to the extent of when PSO's official servers were up.

considering they are doing a crazy taxi and jet set radio remakes so theres a high chance a pso remaster or remake is a possibility as pso is more popular then the jrpg versions,
i dont know anyone who talks about the original games they either talk only about online and pso2,
it would be cool to see pso ver2/bb being on the ps4/5 xbox and pc would be pretty cool.
I think the classic games have been dormant for so long that there's not much coverage on them now (last new game in the classic JRPGs was 1993!). It's sad really, and I would love to see them come back.

I could see sega rerunning the 20th anniversary event in base Pso2 since they seem to like doing stuff like that in base. As for anything in pso2ngs, it's probably going to be something really small like some kind of random login thing. As for a pso remake, it would be cool, but I doubt it, and knowing sega nowadays, it would probably be connected to pso2ngs in some way. By that, I mean it would be infested with microtransactions and loot boxes because that's the industry standard for games as a service nowadays.
I know this is a negative way of looking at it, but negative is how I see the modern game industry nowadays.

I went back and played phantasy star 2 in sega hd collection. I didnt beat it though =( i think ill go back to it some day. I also have pso ep I&II.
I need a new pso. Or a remaster of some kind. I've played this game far too much already, i'm completely burned out of any desire to do so again. I tried doing a new playthrough the other day and I made it as far as seabed. I've been playing the same maps for far too long. I appreciated PSU and I loved PSO2 (before NGS), but nothing hit quite as hard as the original did, and I don't think i'm ever going to get that joy back.

As someone who played and enjoyed the original PSO on Dreamcast, it needs remake.
PSO 2 in my opinion, is incredibly ‘grindy’. [I remember whenever we do the same thing over and over, it’s usually because we hunted for rares - the grinding comes with it.] 🤷🏻 not only that but PSO had challenge mode and a decent battle mode for people who want to do other than leveling.
Pso2 does have things like Challenge Mode and Battle mode, but they are a bit different to PSO.
I do agree that the grind in PSO2 can feel just that, whereas the grind in PSO was often banging your head against a wall trying for a stupidly hard rare drop
They could release a mobile port. This way, they can excuse the jankiness with being easier for mobile phone players, because anyone that has played games on a touchscreen will know how horrible it is, and so a slower-paced game like PSO could work really well.
Maybe they could work with pserver providers in some capacity with the server-side stuff.
Unfortunately the Phantasy Star online 2 game couldn't really hold my interest, I was pretty sad but I eventually found the private servers for Phantasy Star Online BlueBurst and even after falling off the daily grind for years I've kept playing it during events with a few key friends annually for quite some time. I tried playing the original JRPGs during my highschool emulator times but as an American I was exposed to the Square soft and Enix RPGs on Nintendo consoles much more so the game felt a bit jarring and I never finished it.
Having recently been playing through the Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star 1, I would definitely recommend that!

Im personally okay with no sequels/remakes of the original 4 games. Those first games had a legacy and phantasy star 4 was clearly marked as “the end” so let it be the end, why milk the franchise for profit like every other franchise to the point where the franchise resembles nothing it originally intended to be? *cough* final fantasy *cough*. It’s good to see a major franchise end. As for the online series I never played it so I can’t say if it “deserves” to end so I can’t really say much on that end, but imo the original series is good where it is, though a phantasy star remastered collection with some additional options would be cool. Reiko Kodama is also gone so the series would have a major tonal shift, RIP.
I think a Sega Ages version of the classic games, keeping the core of the games but with some quality of life improvements would be fantastic.
Or...any legitimate way to play them at all (since Sega have now pulled the Genesis/Mega Drive Collection). Thankfully I picked it up beforehand.

"PSO Remake" doesn't technically rule out a C.A.R.D. Revolution mobile game! Or maybe I've accidentally manifested this dark timeline by speaking it out loud, lol.
I see a couple of things for a PSO remaster (or remake): move to P2P matchmaking and a central matchmaking and chat server, like Warframe and PS Zero. Could also leverage the "franchise effect" and have a system where PSO goals reward PSO2 titles and cosmetics, like how the Hall of Monuments works across GW1 and 2. Any scratches in NGS that are PSO themed could also drive interest back to the PSO remaster or remake. I imagine if we got an N-Ragol scratch to promote the hypothetical PSO remaster or remake, it would have some people going back to check it out.
I definitely think that P2P matchmaking is the way to go for any PSO remaster. Never realised GW1/2 had a system like that, that's actually really cool. I think a NGS scratch with PSO-themed gear is likely, anything beyond that I'm not sure.
PSO ep 3 was incredible. I still bust it out and play now and then. I'd so be down for a CARD mobile game.

I thibk since they have provate servers keeping the OG experience alive with QoL, make a pso1 remake and do soemthing experimental and crazy with it. If people want the original magic theres a way to experience it. I think they have to capatalize on what made pso1 and u special, but reach a bigger audience like how ffxiv did. Xiv is awful now but it was my favorite mmo for nearly a decade for a reason

I just want Sega Ages Phantasy Star 1-4 (choice of either the originals or an updated version like the jp only PS2 versions) ported to Steam in English. Of course, I'd like PSOBB remastered too, but not if they go after servers.
That sounds similar to how I feel. As much as I'd love a PSO remaster, I'd be a little worried about the private servers. Phantasy Star 2, 3 and 4 desperately need the Sega Ages treatment!
Having PSO on the switch would be pretty great but I fear they'll just grab PSO2 in some way, shape or form which I'm personally not a fan... I'd take something like PSU on the Switch even, I'd love to see any Phantasy Star game I could play either online or offline at my leisure

Played one of the Phantasy Stars at my babysitters as a kid, was quite fun. Had too much fun PKing people using a Game Shark and hacked items in PSO on Dreamcast. Enjoyed playing PSO Episode 1 & 2 on Gamecube later with friends land partying. And years later one of those friends showed me PSO Blue Burst, which was an amazing way to reexperience it. Never got into PS02, it delivered on the graphics, though I wasn't into the crazy change in pace, felt too different. The music and sounds in PSO were awesome aswell, I never forgot them, especially the telepipe noise.
At most I expect them to do a 25th anniversary login week on NGS where you get cardboard cutouts of a couple characters and sprays that no one uses with a gacha completely unrelated to the series history to undermine it
A PSO1 remake could be AWESOME for consoles/PC but it'd have to be done right.
For sure, it's a very tricky balancing act getting a PSO remake right (which is why so many people either don't want one or are worried it wouldn't work out well). I'm taking a watch and wait approach to see if Sega have anything planned. I'm not that confident we'll see a remake or remaster, but I just want something good for Phantasy Star!

As someone who started with PSO2 and NGS I would love to see PSO or BB remastered/remade as frankly NGS has been a disappointment more and more with each passing update failing to live up to the story of PSO2
I personally feel that NGS's story started out very weak but the last chapter we had made a huge improvement in setting things up. Should it have taken over 3 years to get here? No, but I'm glad it's finally going somewhere. I just wish the new story chapters weren't so far apart.

Love the original 4. When it went to PSO, I was out. I would rather play 3 and go through all the generations rather than play PSO.
I can understand people not getting into PSO if the classic JRPG games are more their thing. It was a big change for the franchise, in the same way that PSO to PSO2 was.
