Michael Levin & Mustafa Djamgoz | Bioelectricity and Cancer
This interview is part of my series with Dr. Michael Levin where we interview significant people in the history of developmental bioelectricity.
Dr. Mustafa Djamgoz was one of the first people to study the role of ion channels and bioelectricity in cancer, which he initially documented in a 1995 paper. His research showed that there was an uptake in voltage-gated sodium channels in all types of cancer metastasis, except prostate cancer, highlighting the significant role of studying ion channels in cancer.
Simply put, the spread of cancer cells is linked to increased activity in sodium ion channels, which regulate electrical currents in our cells.

Dr. Alfonso Martinez Arias is tempting to explain the simple fact that it is all about of network of interactions which cover all levels of cells and organism, therefore we should not focus and try to explain the phenomena of biology on only one angle of this network like genes. I personally do not think that this is kind of discovery for us the scientists, but rather reminding that we should not forget the bigger picture. That is fine, but I hope this view will not be MISS-USE from people like creationist to seek for some sort of "god finger", which evidently for sure is not his point of his talk. After all, entire network of interactions are explainable and are also object of our study.

I completely agree that we don't understand cells and don't think enough about them as units. However, the speaker is a bit too dismissive of "genes". Somatic cell nuclear transfer shows that you can change the identity of a cell by changing its genome. Similarly, if you infect a cell with viral DNA, it becomes a viral replication factory. Yes, cells are extremely complex and sophisticated structures, but ultimately (almost) all of their components come from reading the genome and are therefore determined by it, more or less directly. Of course that doesn't prevent the environment from affecting a cell's behaviour and phenotype.

Or why else did your preferred version of invisible supernatural super being un-intelligently design the female birth canal so narrowly causing millions of spontaneous natural abortions and miscarriages killing often the fetus, child and/or mother. If only there was someone or a group of someone’s that cared about doing real cancer research. It really seems insane that nobody that is handing out money to cancer researchers is willing to allow research into this. It really doesn’t make sense. I think the next person to interview is someone that has the ability to direct funding for cancer research and get them to explain exactly why they’re refusing to fund this.

They both know of Levin’s work. This is a very worthwhile podcast but these ideas were not entirely new in 2013. The connection of cells into a multicellular organism is partly achieved by gap junctions which are an important part of Levin’s research. Gap junctions and other intercellular connections are known to be a critical step in evolution of multicellular animal life and were known to be lost in cancer about 20 years ago, or more. This was and is seen as obvious reversion to an evolutionarily earlier cellular state in which both cell-cell interactions and proliferation are not coordinated as they should be in order to maintain organism function.

@1:02:40 - the body creates cancer in the mammary gland because the gland isn't not used after a certain age so a place it can create the cancer. That theory, if true, would probably also ring true for prostate cancer. After a certain age, the prostate isn't needed and so a cancer could develop there in a safe place.

I lifted 15-35 years old. Took up surfing, swimming, biking age 30 and focused on this thru age 45 from 45-55 i did not lift nor do any sports because the business I ran had lots of labor all day every day. In my 50’s i took up hiking up semi steep routes til 59 when I got seriously ill. It took til 64 to recover fully. What to do to regain my health was the question. Easy. I went back to lifting. I also walk 30 miles a week and spend 15 hours plus lifting, battle ropes, farmer walks other misc. I am on Metformin 2000 mg daily. RESULTS? I am stronger every week, my muscles are sprouting again getting big again. Reason? I am not building new muscle per se rather regaining activating dormant muscle fibers that I built up over a lifetime. No side effects from Metformin nor muscle growth blocked FMPOV>

In electronics, we move electrons around because it is pretty convenient for our purposes. In biological systems, instead of electrons, typically ions (sodium, potassium, calcium, etc.) are moved around instead.

Anyway as turritopsis applies trans- differentiation answering to an external factor (potential predator ) our body does the same choosing several decades of life with a limited possibility to develop cancer, I think it does answering to Argon and Xenon with a recognized anti-apoptotic activity, I would like to see a rat in a modified atmosphere deprived of those two gases.

It‘s not that simple. I‘m in for 5 weeks now, carbs 20 g or less, lots of fats, moderate protein. I got a Sibio sensor so l can track my ketone levels constantly. I am astonished at how often the level goes down in a non ketogenic state (under 0.3). During the night it also isn‘t ketogenic. I’ve never been diabetic or prediabetic and always had very healthy eating habits (mostly organic). My best ketone production seems to happen in the late afternoon, but also then the level is a little bit above 1.0. I would like to get in the therapeutic zone of around 2.0 but that does not happen by itself.

Is there a way to get your muscles back after taking metformin for three days? I'm in my 30s and I stop taking them on the third day because my arms were looking a lil thinner but not to thin.

I'm about to turn 41(male) and I've been on Metformin for weightloss and anti-aging since I was 35. I just started a Rapamycin(Sirolimus 6mg/once weekly) and Acarbose 50mg 3x daily right before a meal, healthspan/longevity protocol. With the Rapamycin I've already seen a reduction in inflammation after the first week of use. I'm planning to titrate from 6mg to 8mg once weekly after 6 weeks of use and my first metabolic panel labwork comes back in. Hopefully within the next 10 years we will know more about what is the best dosage protocol for Rapamycin in humans for life extension and healthspan. Does anyone have any personal tips on Dosage and frequency with Rapamycin?

I came here from one of Dr. Anthony Chaffee's videos where he mentioned Dr. Bruce Ames. Early nineties and his body and brain still work... I WANT THAT! Never stop researching nutrition.

I got my PhD in Pharmacology in the 90s. Dr Ames is a rockstar. If the general public understood who this man was you would have millions of views. Congrats on getting this interview.

Do you happen to know if SystemsAge is commercially available? I want to get mine calculated. I already have my raw methylation data for my epigenome in the form of .IDAT files from the Illumina machines.

Two comments: Soy isoflavones, acting on estrogen receptor beta, maintain bone density as well as lower the risk of CVD in menopausal women. Also, data from the SWAN study confirms that hormones did not explain changes or differences in arterial stiffness as women transitioned through menopause. Inflammation is a huge problem and you cannot separate lifestyle factors from the timing of menopause. There is a push for HRT from all sides and it is a huge mistake, IMO. Sadly, no studies revolve around fit plant-based calorie restrictors with low BP and cholesterol who have few symptoms because of their lifestyles. Many women I know who stayed on HRT has=ve developed breast cancer, many in their 70s, from 20 years of refusing to believe they could survive without HRT.

Fasting is the body's intergrated self cleansing and healing mechanism which both rejuvenates the body and mind and leads to optimum health and well-being. 😊
