Small Scale RABBIT FODDER SYSTEM: Save Money Growing Your Own Rabbit Food

Today we are answering some questions about our rabbit fodder system and how we grow fodder to feed our rabbit herd on a small scale. The big thing with any fodder system is it is not going to save you time, but it is going to save you money by taking a small amount of grain and growing it into a much larger volume of fodder for your rabbits. I didn't catch if you were growing spring wheat or winter wheat. I direct sow winter wheat, and have never had serious weed pressure. The winter weeds aren't as competitive as summer weeds, and by the time spring rolls around the wheat is well established and does a superb job of weed suppression. I do broadcast some fine woodchips or shredded leaf mulch after the wheat emerges, taking care not to bury it, but typically only in small amounts that don't prevent all my chickweed and deadnettle from growing in fall and winter.

We're upgrading our coop size soon and really looking forward to letting my silkie girls hatch more babies. I love their broodiness because, since they're easier to relocate, it's so much easier to make sure they get out for water food and the colossal broody poop.

Dear Chris and Steph, As you know, I was looking forward to this video which completes one full year with your silkies. I was a little apprehensive that perhaps there would be downsides which you had not anticipated. Well, the switch to silkies has obviously been a success. I am very grateful to hear this good news. It was very good to hear that the setting silkies are very easy to handle. As you have done in the past with your chantecleers in the past, I was very pleased to hear that you provide a private place for the setting silkies. Secondly, it was very good to hear how well the young silkies integrate with the mature birds. At the same time, I like very much how you carry out the integration. I was interested to hear that, at present you have 22 laying hens which are producing about 11 eggs per day. What size are silkie eggs? Would they be the same size as graded small eggs? Or are they the size of peewees? Now being elderly, whenever I can, I buy small eggs. They are the right size for me. I really don’t need a large egg. Am I right in concluding that you have enough hens to keep you supplied with eggs year round? If so, this is great. Your switch to silkies has been a success, with many built-in benefits. Thank you for bringing us up-to-date on the raising of silkies. Your video should prove to be valuable to other homesteaders. Sincerely, Larry Clarence Lewis London, Ontario.

Thanks Larry! It's good to hear you enjoyed the video and found it helpful, glad we could share our experience. We have absolutely loved the change to the silkies and have no regrets. We have not bought eggs at all this year, we stockpile them when they are in good production so we have them for leaner times. Being smaller eggs,we do find they only store for about 2 5 months, so that would be the only negative we have discovered. The Chantecler eggs would store for at least 4 months. We weighed the eggs back when we started and 3 silkie eggs was the same as two Chantecler eggs. But we do find a lot of variation with younger birds. Thanks so much for watching along.

I hate to see you working so hard to get the nuts out. I'd like to share with you a way that may be easier. I use the bench press on my husband's workbench. I have used a hammer also but you will want to put a glove on because it does Sting. And again pointy end up And you don't want to crush them you just want to half them. Then I use a nipper mini wire cutter To cut them from the sides. Then if all goes well the nutmeat should just fall out and you're removing the shell from the nut instead of trying to dig the nut out from the shell. Hope this may help someone. I am in awe of all the shagbark Hickory trees you have. I have only a few and I love them. Thank you for sharing Your beautiful trees with us.

I know when we had goats, they loved it so I'm not sure why I never thought about giving it to the rabbits, but I'll definitely be adding that to their diets next year. Also, our rabbits each have a different opinion of our wild mint. Some love it others won't touch it. I don't have a press or juicer of any sort, so I split the canes lengthwise and use water extraction. Water extraction definitely creates a pretty strongly flavored product compared to sorghum syrup from the grocery store. It's pretty salty, actually, which might indicate a high mineral content. One step I do which eliminates most of the foaming and creates a clearer syrup is to clarify the juice before boiling it down. I add a small amount of bentonite (home brew product, used in fining wine), and store the juice in the refrigerator until it has settled, then decant and reduce the clear liquid. If there's a lot of juice, I will do a partial cook before fining. I usually harvest my small batch of canes early during seed set, before the plants have invested their stored sugars into making starches to fill the grain.

I found a hickory nuts tree a couple days ago and I've started processing then but I kid you not the shells are 1/8th to a 1/4 inch thick and I have to use wire cutters to crack them open! They taste great but it's takes me 5 mins at least to complete just 1 nut. Is this normal. Coming to this video I see your walnut walls are super thin compared. Are they old or just not ready. Tia!

I've raised both ducks and geese for almost 2 decades (I never bred them though). We had a gander (male goose) named Ajax who fought off a weasel and defended the flock. We didnt even know about it until we noticed his neck was swollen and found the bitemark! Luckily, Ajax survived. He was a good gander but always attacked me (even when it wasn't breeding season). Also, we did have a red-tail hawk divebomb our ducks and geese when they where bathing. However, the hawk abandoned his mission when he got closer and saw how big they were (I was standing right there but the hawk ignored me).
