    If we imagine that our Filofax is like a portable filing cabinet we wouldn’t try and write on a file without removing it. I use Personal size and am right-handed so the left pages are problematic. It is best to remove pages to write on them.

    Thanks for the genuinely productive and helpful videos! I wish task ‘grids’ were more common than lists. But why do you find this method easier than just indexing projects on a separate page, with their todo’s added to the grid?

    • @Flatability
      @Flatability 21 годину тому

      Thank you for your kind comment. The reason why I use grids is because, at least for me, I find them to be visually readable at a glance, and more therapeutically satisfying when I strike them off when completed. Striking off a note that's written on a single line can make things look messy, and may obviate the need for a column in which to place a tick mark. Also, a grid allows me to differentiate between different degrees of priority, simply by making the grid outline slightly broader, around that particular task. But your point is very interesting, so I might make a specific video about this issue. Thank you.

    • @helencooper286
      @helencooper286 20 годин тому

      @ I like grids better too :) at times I’ve kept both my project and task lists that way. It’s just more satisfying somehow, and I agree about the check mark columns not really being needed if you cross off tasks in a list. I usually use them for categorising instead and ‘cross off’ with a highlighter. It’s an extra pen but I find it makes it so much easier to identify at a glance what I have yet to do. Obviously it takes away from the perfect simplicity of the system you have, though!

    I feel the same about the Malden, I was so excited to get one then it has misaligned rings and the leather felt off. Then returned it and got an original and that leather felt so much better. Still not 100% happy with the quality so moved to a moterm and the feels amazing but so bulky - ever the hunt for a perfect binder 😅

    Which Filofax (Personal size) can you recommend from the recent catalogue? The Chester?

    • @Flatability
      @Flatability День тому

      A tricky subject, as I've only tested a few and, as you probably know, I have had issues with leather quality, flatability, and poor ring alignment. Having said that, the "Original" and the "Norfolk" looked very nice when I examined them in a local store last year. I would recommend, if at all possible, to buy from a store, so that you can check that the rings are in alignment. Alternatively, buy direct from Filofax themselves, as Filofax appear to be very good at refunding you if the model they send to you has any faults, such as poor rings. I would steer clear of Amazon as, from my own personal experience, a binder may not be a genuine Filofax. My own personal favourite is the "Heritage personal compact", although mine had misaligned rings when purchased at my local store. If you're looking for a new Filofax, with the qualities of something like a vintage Winchester, then remember that Filofax do indeed make this, but only for the Japanese market. These models sometimes pop up on eBay, so look out for those if you have the budget.

  • @SrirachaSandvvitch
    @SrirachaSandvvitch 2 дні тому

    I like the Original over the Norfolk. In my opinion, the Norfolk is just poorly executed. I couldn't figure out why the paper and dividers peeked out of the notebook while closed. It took me owning a Moterm rings to figure out that the Filofax Norfolk is slight narrower than the Moterm, causing the inserts to stick outside of the notebook. So, I did what any sensible person would do: I gutted the Norfolk for it's rings and popped them in my Moterm. Perfection. Wouldn't it be great if they just gave in and used Krause rings like the rest of the world?? To me, they are one of those legacy brands that count on name alone. That just won't work in a world full of Gillio, VDS, etc. Not to mention that smaller rings are trending right now thanks to a lot of Japanese brands--my Plotters are precious to me. I think I'll keep buying Originals just for the fun of collecting them--sorry to the person who doesn't care for stylish tools; I must have a pretty notebook. But as for a quality product from Filofax? It's going to be vintage. And speaking of vintage: I was in a bidding war on eBay for a gorgeous black Sherwood with gilded corners...I lost by 4 dollars to a person that jumped into the bid with about 2 or 3 minutes left. That was in December--I may never recover lol.

    • @Flatability
      @Flatability День тому

      Thank you for your very interesting thoughts. I agree with all your comments. I must admit that, since I've talked about the quality of the Sherwood model (especially the earliest examples) prices appear to have risen on eBay. But There are plenty out there, so hopefully your next bid will be successful.

    I recently got into journaling with pen and paper following the "bullet journal" method. Is this something you're familiar with? Also, would a Filofax in personal size with dotted paper inserts be a good fit as a "bullet journal"? Thanks for the incredibly informative and thoughtful channel 😊.

    • @Flatability
      @Flatability День тому

      Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate them. Yes, I'm familiar with bullet journaling, but I don't do it myself. If you're going to try any given combination of Filofax size or type of paper then try those combinations before you commit to purchasing an expensive binder. You can buy plastic personal size binders very cheaply on Amazon or eBay, and then experiment. If you are going to use dotted paper then I recommend checking that the dots are in alignment with the paper edge. If not, then make your own inserts, to a custom size of your choosing.

    Hi, have you tried using the pages in your binders in ‘landscape format’ in situ? I have a Wuzhi A7 (pocket sized) and have done a quick experiment and the rings are somewhat noticeable/obtrusive. I do notice them near the bottom of the 'top page' but on the plus side it does feel like I have room for my larger handwriting. The pages felt reasonably stable and there was a 'sense of space'. It is similar to the A6 Leuchtturm pocket bullet journal which is designed for landscape format use to offer the user an A5 spread should they wish to use it. Interested in your thoughts. Thanks

    As far as I am aware from doing the research last year, there is no option in czech or slovak language (they come as a one insert since the languages are so similar) without the QR codes. The option to not have the QR is only available on UK site or in the personalization station which does not exist on slovak or czech websites either. Therefore I had to go for the QR codes, even though I will never use them, but the refill being A5 and day per page, I am quite happy with the real estate there. Still, they should make the option available.

    For me the rings getting in the way has never really been a problem, but your hand not resting on your inserts once you've gone past the middle certainly has. Whenever I get past the middle, I take out the paper and move it so that the upper rings go through the bottom holes on the page. Then when I'm done writing I move the paper down to its normal position again.

    I honestly did not know that any of the Filofax System Organisers were made in synthetic materials. I thought they were all Windsor leather binders, like mine. An A5 FSO Windsor was my first Filofax, and I carried it for about 14 years as my primary personal organiser as a technology consultant, until I replaced it in 2008 with an A5 Bridle. But yes, the front pocket was designed to fit a 3.5" floppy disk. The System Organiser debuted in 1992, I believe, and I bought mine around 1994, to replace the Day Runner Pro half US Letter size organiser I'd used to that point.

    I'm also not a fan of QR codes - they take up space and are unnecessary in my A5 planner. In the Czech Republic, we don't have the option to order inserts without QR codes, so I create my own. However, that means I miss out on the calendar and holidays. The system really isn't well thought out because we already have existing apps on our phones for these reminders. Thank you for the summary video, and maybe someday we'll get clean pages without unnecessary clutter.

    I've been using this method to write while I'm out in the "field". I cut my leather into a sort of dashboard and punched holes in the leather so I can just slip the leather in with my inserts. I like top tabs so I cut a tab into the leather and I use it as a page marker.

I double punch all my pocket inserts with my Rapesco adjustable punch, first with the holes on the pocket setting, then again with the holes on the personal setting. Thank you for the review! Im from Brazil and im thinking of buying atoma paper from a local retailer. Whats your opinion on them? Even of they claim to be good for fp inks, it seems like the ink has absorbed quite well into the paper. Do they show any sheen, or are those qualities you can only find in rohdia and tomoe river papers?

    • @Flatability
      @Flatability 11 днів тому

      As I understand it, there is more than one type of Atoma paper. The Atoma paper that I have has some "bite" to it, which some like and some do not. Rhodia seems to be smoother in my opinion, but neither paper are perfect for ink. There are so many variables that it is difficult to give a perfect answer. My recommendation is to buy a small quantity to test. Thanks you for your questions.

      I agree that this is a Fabulous Filofax. Sadly, it was only made for a brief period, nearly 20 years ago. They do appear on eBay, once in a blue moon, but bidding is fierce whenever they appear. Luckily, despite the Filofax brand's apparent reluctance to make anything similar, there are some excellent alternatives. Check out Plotter's "Mini 5" model, or very similar models from MeePlus and Wuzhi. All three of these businesses use high quality leather, and excellent rings.
