Back-Room Boy - Arthur Askey sends The Pips

In this centenary of the BBC-broadcast time signal, here's a snippet from the 1942 Arthur Askey comedy film, Back-Room Boy, showing exactly how the pips were generated!
Simplest Crystal Set Radio
Переглядів 194Рік тому
This is the simplest radio ever! It's a pared-down version of a fixed-frequency crystal set, consisting of one inductor and one diode. Nothing else. The switch merely selects the other inductor, and so, an alternative frequency. Both are optional. First up, is BBC Radio 4, broadcast from the longwave transmitter in Droitwich, around 120km distant. Secondly, you'll hear China Radio International...

Hebrew Tracks
Переглядів 2726 років тому
Here's a selection of tracks we used to play on the Voice of Peace, in late 1980/early 1981. They're all that's left on a an old C90 tape I made, whilst floating around, one day! I'd love to be able to identify the tracks and listen to them in better quality, on Spotify but I've just discovered that Hebrew tracks on Spotify have not been transliterated into latin text. So if anyone could ID any...

Any ideas who composed the theme tune?
Shame all the stations with personality were swollowed up and sucked dryer than Renee Redelinghuys snatch. Regulation limiting certain practices forced them to work harder, stay community focused, kept advertising profitable and prevented 3 companies from buying them up and for those that refused to sell stopped those big companies from undercutting the advertising revenue and using the dirty tricks that they do use today to cause them to close down, or take the lowest bid. All the good stations have gone and nothing left except the scum.
There was a missed opportunity for the final broadcast to end with "Mine is the *last* voice you will ever hear on Atlantic 252". Would have provided a great bookend.
I was around then. And the 'Coral Windo-oo-ows' advert playing loads all the time 😅
Never liked that shit station back in the later 70s when I found it, apart from Bridges..a rock show, and James Whale chat show.
What song is that at 1:37?
There's not enough for me to be able to identity it. Sorry. The music would have been broadcast from the other radio station on 252kHz - Chaine 3, from Algeria.
7.125 MHz? Like, smack in the middle of the 40m amateur band?
Here in Europe, 40m was just 7000-7100 until around 2005.
7125kHz SW is in the 41m band on Shortwave which was used for broadcasts.
Did they use Jam Jingles?
hi po
Yes like 539, this end of the AM scale, signals traveled a lot further. I remember hearing a few years back,. you could hear Gold 603. Kent, near Swadlincote South of Derbyshire. 194 would be more directional towards London.
its may now and they still broadcast shipping forcast at 0048 on longwave
The transmitter also sends switching signals to electricity meters to customers on Economy 7, and the like. The utility companies are behind schedule with their rollout of smart meters to these customers so 198kHz will stay on air until that's done. June '25, I think.
Came on first thing in morning, and 11 oclock at night, , i want at my funeral ,

I was 9 when I first heard this station, 102.6 Fox FM and HMTV ❤
And now Radio 4 Extra is facing the axe.
These were used on ROCK102 in Buffalo, NY.
Good jingles
I've been looking for this version for a long time. The "real" original. The one they actually played on the first day of Radio one. Including the time pips at the end. Thanks
Glad you found it! This recording is actually the one held in the BBC library so very likely to be the 'real' original.
The countdown from Gordon is a vibe! ❤
When KNBR 68 playrd music . Thanks for sharing.
FM...? Really handy, in the middle of nowhere.
I listen to Bbc radio 4 on 198 khz the entire day while working in my shop in Belgium. I will miss it profoundly.
With digital television, you will get more channels.
Arseholes. What a completely useless thing to do.
To me the majority of Alfasound jingles sound really amateurish and naff, and these are no exception. The singing is absolutely awful and flat. There's no robustness or energy at all. The bland English accents don't help and sound so dreary. Centre Radio's second jingle package by Alfasound sounds even worse than this one.
Ironically, the likes of Radio Veronica (formerly 192m), Radio Caroline (558m) and Laser 558m previously, all recognised that a 'longer' frequency down towards that end of the spectrum, allowed the signal to travel much further.
Bad decision by the Beeb too ditch Radio 4 on Longwave, surely they can’t be saving loads of cash by dropping the service
BBC AM LW station is live in 2023 august. :)
cool! I keep meaning to build one for 648KHz (I live in Suffolk, so the signal will be strong), just need to work out the component values and source a suitable diode (where do you get a germanium diode these days?)
Thanks! Ebay is your friend, re sourcing a few diodes. As for working out the tuned circuit values: I imagine there's on online resource for that. If 648 is by far the strongest thing on the dial, you might get away with just the diode!
@@wrongsideof40 Got it working after a few false starts (tried a "Germanium" diode from Amazon and a Schottky but those didn't work) - managed to source some CV7130/OA91 and 1N3470 - those work with either a 220 uH inductor and 100 pF capacitor; or a 330 uH inductor on its own (I got confused at first by why the values didn't match the resonance calculators, but had forgotten the capacitance of the antenna!)
This is the closedown sequence. After a few moments of silence the shortwave transmissions are switched off till BFBS returns in the morning.
It's almost identical. Ed should just give royalties to the original
They don't make theme tunes like this anymore! Such a great theme, especially from 2:10 onwards. Loved how dramatic & urgent it sounded.
Nice to hear 275/285 and stereo VHF again!
I like Photograph, but clearly Amazing is better emotionally.
Using the same chord progression is one thing. The same instrumentation, theme, melody, lyrics and stresses is too much. There’s plenty of songs out there that are openly inspired by eachother or even built off samples of eachother that sound more unique and distinct from eachother than these two songs.
Incredibly clear audio. I can listen to radio 4 LW in Austria during nighttime, but barely, there's so much noise that I can't understand half the words
Although the announcements are on-air, this recording was made from the online BBC Sounds.
yeah, this is from an online broadcast of the long wave _feed_ before it gets sent to the LW transmitter sites. the LW broadcast would never sound this good!
The footsteps are obviously the BBC engineer at Wychbold walking up the steps to the switching room at 5.20am ready to fully power up 1500 metres before the organ fanfare, Theme One, the bongs of Big Ben and Ray Moore reading the news
Talk sport use the frequencies BBC RADIO 1 used have done for quite a while.
It’s more than influence. It’s plagiarism. Anyone with ears can hear this.
I figured this out well before it became public knowledge,it was so obvious.
sounds good together
FF 2023 and sky compared to its digital early days and its pretty much half the service it once was with many channels closed since launch, Interactive service gone. And the whole idea of watching TV in its over the air form is slowly becoming a thing of the past. The only thing that has not changed is price increases!
Hi everyone, Ed Sheeran really is AMAZING when he wrote this 'Photograph' song, until I found out the similarities from Matt Cardle. 😞
There are things I love about 4Xtra and things I loathe - programmes starting late so we can hear a "hilarious" interview from The Comedy Club - cackling women, and Arthur Smith with asinine questions such as "how do you define your career in terms of soup?". Funny?. Not to me, but that might be followed by a classic Round The Horne, but I get sick of the announcers telling us that a 1957 Goon Show contains "langauge and attitudes of the time". What do they expect?. People never used to be so stupid and sensitive.
433 and 330 metres medium wave, it's radio 2 😊
Matt won. Ed stole this
And was it Phil somebody who used to say “a roony, a leeno, stupid boy!” Phil Wood?
I wonder if these were recorded at Pluto Studios in Granby Row with Phil Bush and Steve Penk etc…. I once gave Steve Penk a lift home from the studios one night. He talked nonstop all the way home but the curious part was that when we went through a tunnel or under a bridge his mouth kept moving but his voice went silent. I guess that’s normal for am radio though….😊
