- Here is the version of George Martin's Theme One, as broadcast by BBC Radio 1, each morning - back in the late 60's/early 70's - as the station came on air. This version includes the (not-often-heard) footsteps and the church door shutting FX: sure to jog a memory or two!
Fantastic, takes me right back to waking up to this tune on a farm where we used to help bring in the harvest....thank you.
Came on first thing in morning, and 11 oclock at night, , i want at my funeral ,
The footsteps are obviously the BBC engineer at Wychbold walking up the steps to the switching room at 5.20am ready to fully power up 1500 metres before the organ fanfare, Theme One, the bongs of Big Ben and Ray Moore reading the news
I've been looking for this version for a long time. The "real" original. The one they actually played on the first day of Radio one. Including the time pips at the end. Thanks
Glad you found it! This recording is actually the one held in the BBC library so very likely to be the 'real' original.
This really brings back memories to me, getting up for school on a winter's morning back in the early 1970's, switching on the radio to 247 metres MW at 5:25 and hearing a series of pips followed by Theme One. I used to love the theme because it was so ahead of it's time with the psychedelic sound of the organ and guitars, fed through a distortion filter...Great to hear this version again!
Yep, me too! Being a techno-geek - even as a child - I'd also enjoy the preamble: the transmitter coming on air, followed by a series of 'bongs'. Glad you enjoyed it.
Never heard the footsteps version before, it wasn't on the 67 single, we had a school radio staion in 67 and we used this as our theme too, George Mitchell sec mod, Falmer Rd, Leyton, London E10 it was started by the art teacher "Jock" Cruickshank. And I presented a show called "Playground Pops" lol, lol !!!!!
