    I’ve never canned tomatoes. I have a late plant here in Wisconsin just bearing fruit. A boxcar Willie (heirloom). Watching it carefully due to our temps getting cooler. Also we’ve had the issue of not enough rain. Thx for the info!

    I am in NE PA, zone 5B. It has been extremely hot all summer. I am growing 2 Black Beauty eggplant from seedlings in 5 gal pails with Miracle-Gro potting mix, M-Gro Plant Food 18-18-21, every 7-10 days. Potted on June 10th.They would be coming due for harvest in few wks. They are on an elevated deck, away from garden soil. The fruit looked great for a while. I had 12 healthy eggplants on each. When they were small, I used Sevin dust to get rid of flea beetles. I don't see signs of insects, I've covered them with garden fabric every night since after using the dust. The fruit have suddenly stopped growing. All the fruit on one has turned pale, but no rotting, no soft spots, or BER. They are all hard as a rock. In the last 2 wks, I've fed both 2x with a liquid high phosphorous fertilizer (Miracle-Gro Quick Start to see if that helps. It doesn't seem to be getting better, but ir's been very hot here, so I started keeping shade cloth on them during the hot days. The other plant's fruit looked like it would make it, they were still deep purple, but now I notice they are also starting to look pale. The majority of the fruit are size of a baseball. One on the healthier plant has turned light brown. I cut it open and it is unripe, light green, but yet healthy looking. The plants are a normal height, about 4.5 feet, and still starting new fruit. Am I missing insect damage? Disease? Is it the heat, maybe too much sun? Has to be sun & heat, right? The stems look perfect. How can I get the fruit's color back and get them to keep growing?- Thanks!!!

    I got three 16 foot long cattle panels home no problem with my first generation toyota tacoma. 6 foot long bed. I did not bend them. You can buy these things called roof racks that go on top of the pickup. Something you would need anyway to get that lumber that you are using home. You just have to put a red flag on the load that sticks out (check your states regulations) If you can't pound a steel T-post into the ground you should just not go outside in the first place. I am a 5 foot 7 inch 125 pound human with a crooked back and I have no problem doing this and my soil is trash, full of rocks. treated wood in the ground only lasts 3 or 4 years in my climate. Concrete on soil then treated wood is the only way to go. Digging the hole for the two post would be more work than necessary. my cattle panel designed greenhouse does not need power tools to build. You need a miter saw to cut those 45's and not everyone has a miter saw No reason to be a dick about it. You could have just showed people what you did without the insults. the cordage wont last long. it expands and contracts with moisture levels and with the sun, heat and cold they will go bad in a couple maybe three years. quarter inch galvanized steel panels will last decades. You failed

    When you pick them not quite ripe do you break the stem off?

    • @bellesbackyard3264
      @bellesbackyard3264 Місяць тому

      Yes. Great question! It is best to leave a small part of the stem attached. Especially if you are picking them very early. That part of the stem does play a role in its shelf life and allows it to ripen a little slower making it ripen more evenly.

    Thank-you for the video. I am an amateur gardener from New Jersey (zone 6b). Your video addressed my main problem of cucumber plants producing a lot of leaves and flowers, eventually turning yellow and decaying without producing much fruit. I plant Burpee Straight 8. Are there other varieties you suggest? I use miracol grow to feed. Does that supply all the nutrients needed for a successful crop? You mentioned several nutrients. I grow my cukes vertically on a fence. Is it necessary to disinfect the fence after the growing season or will the Northeast winter kill viruses and disease?

    • @bellesbackyard3264
      @bellesbackyard3264 Місяць тому

      Hi. You may want to try a self pollinating climbing cuke like the Beit Alpha and the American slicer. For a non-organic general fertilizer Miracle Grow is fine. I wouldn’t worry about any thing remaining on your fence. Most reoccurring diseases will be in the soil or carried by bugs. Thanks for the comment. Good luck.

    That's a great trellis design. I did not have any of the trouble you mention but I used hog panels. I used 6 hog panels which are more narrow because my 4 beds are 3 foot x 8 foot, in 2 rows. 4 panels in the bed and 2 of the panels span between the beds.

    • @bellesbackyard3264
      @bellesbackyard3264 Місяць тому

      Depending on the type of cuke. If it is an open pollinated, your non seedless type, you might be ok. Typically they throw all male flowers at the beginning of growth then throw a mixture of Male and female. You may have some male flowers on the way. Just be patient and see what happens in the next week or so. Good luck!

    I noticed when I watered to much when I was first starting, I got blossom end rot. The moment I stoped watering as much have not had it since. I did a lot of those recommended fixes that you spoke of. Nothing worked. Just watered less…same with damping off. I had a major issue with this when I first started seed starting. I almost gave up because everything was dieing. I figured it couldn’t be a disease. What are those chances? I stopped watering as much and fixed my problems. I was able to save a lot just by putting it in dry soil and stopped watering as much.

    Had to start harvesting tomatoes shortly before fully ripe - bc they were getting nibbled on by animals at night. (Can't blame them, they're delicious.) I was skeptical, but gotta admit they do ripen beautifully on the window sill!

    Not a great argument, I think you should have said is that cattle panels don't work for you! The points about transportation are exaggerated and as the comments demonstrate many people have no issues with getting cattle panels home and installed . When planning a garden you always look at the path of the sun, so why would I install cattle panels in a way that shades my plants? I do like the fact that you are open to counter opinions. Best of luck with your garden.

    I find ber has a lot to do with the plant breed and variety itself. I grow Early girl Bush with zero ber. I also grow Carolina gold with zero ber. This year I tried a new one to me called Best boy Bush and it's got ber. Keep in mind all of these plants are determinate varieties. I grew indeterminate varieties for years, and they all had ber! I went nuts for years and tried everything out there to keep my plants from getting ber. Now I no longer have to. I will only grow determinate varieties from now on and just keep an eye out for the ones that get ber.

    • @shaqzeebeats3676
      @shaqzeebeats3676 2 місяці тому

      I find your comments more logical on this BER discussions. It's beginning to look most realistic the blossom end rot in tomatoes relates more with the varieties than any other cause. Seed producers aren't focused on improvements to help farmers grow healthier produce.

    • @bellesbackyard3264
      @bellesbackyard3264 2 місяці тому

      @shaqzeebeats3676 thanks for the comment. I’m actually researching specific varieties resistant to BER as I type this. Waiting on some responses back for suppliers and a few horticulturalist. I’m going to put it to the test next tomato season. @kansasgardener5844 made an interesting point that peaked my curiosity.

    • @kansasgardener5844
      @kansasgardener5844 2 місяці тому

      @shaqzeebeats3676 I actually thought I was the reason my plants got ber. Inconsistent watering, calcium deficiency, etc. Turns out that it wasn't my fault at all. I wish I had started growing determinate tomatoes years ago. Especially Early girl bush and Carolina gold. I've also thought it's strange that cherry tomatoes never get ber. No matter the Varieties.

As you say, get your soil tested. Do not use lime, which has calcium but will raise the Ph. As you say egg shells,Tums etc is a waste of time.
