Van Life Reality Check: Massive Repair Bills in the Mountains
Welcome to episode 14! Our trusty home on wheels finally waved the white flag after crushing 10,000 epic miles on the road. A not so gentle reminder that sometimes you need to trade mountain views for mechanic visits! While our wallet took a hit, these repairs were long overdue. Between garage visits, we've been absolutely blown away by Colorado's Rocky Mountains. The repair bill might've hurt, but this state has completely stolen our hearts! 🏔️

I kept leaning in when you described the beauty of the places you were visiting - as if I don't live here (Colorado) and haven't traveled these stretches over the years. 😂 It's wonderful to see it through your eyes. I love that you're having an amazing experience in this part of the U.S. and wish all three of you continued safe journeys!
Love your journey .
Unbelievable views! It's amazing how beautiful it is out there. I've got to admit I'd be a little nervous about driving on that one road where there's no room for error. 😟😟😟😟😟😟😟😟 I've never made it out there and probably never will so its nice to see it thru someone elses eyes, pov. Btw, there is so much money in Aspen. So many celebrities and wealthy non-celebrities own homes there. And yes, there's great skiing all over Colorado including Aspen. There are two other really nice areas called Steamboat Springs and Vail that are very pretty and have great skiing. Glad you guys are having such a great time and enjoying your trip so much. I will stay tuned and see what comes along next. Safe travels! PS Did your BF see the hotel or any scenes that were in Dumb and Dumber? It's a classic flic for guys of any age.
greetings both , top hair demi , incredible scenery , those steps looked like they were reaching the sky. hey , a lexus 😂 ( dan!! .. DAN!!!) .. your van is getting some serious miles in so comes at a price i suppose , take care , loadsa luv etc from blighty
Playing in the sand priceless. Love the energy in this episode love the barbecue while sunset. This is overlanding at its best cheers Demi
So much fun! Felt like a big kid ☺️ thank you! 🫶🏼
Once you get used to driving a taller vehicle it’s hard to go back to a lower one. Now you know why so many (North) Americans like to drive pickup trucks.
I’ve never seen so many pick ups in my life 😂
The air pollution was smoke from forest fires, it can travel hundreds of miles. We experienced some of it when we visited Alberta in July and had a bit here in Southern Ontario last summer.
Anhhhh I see that makes sense I just assumed they would tell us what it was coming from they just said it’s coming from the north but I think you might be right there
@@demieverafter We had one day in Okotoks (just south of Calgary) when there was no cloud cover but the smoke was so bad it felt like twilight and the sun was just an orange ball that you could easily look directly at. It was at the same time as the Jasper fire but this smoke was from another fire in British Columbia. I hope that next year when you visit Western Canada that you don’t encounter too much of it. Don’t let the possibility put you off of visiting.
I’m not afraid of heights either, it’s the long drop and sudden stop at the end that unnerves me a bit😉 I can relate to that drive. We were in Switzerland this spring and being driven up into the mountains on a narrow winding road was interesting. At least there was a barrier, some wooden stakes and some thin rope.☹
So true it’s nerve wracking isn’t it 😬 we felt a bit nervous driving in Switzerland too but this was a different level of drop 😅
Hi, another great video you're such a great storyteller love following along safe travels.
Hey 👋 thank you I really appreciate that I love making videos so it makes me happy when I can share that with the world 🫶🏼

Service always costly, but nesseary thanks for sharing your journey with us Demi cheers
Hey Shaun thank you for always watching and supporting! Costly for sure especially having the rotas done but peace of mind now!
You didn't stop at Buc-ees on the way to Ft. Collins! Cleanest bathrooms anywhere! Great video, love Colorado. Thank you for sharing. Travel safe.
Thank you so much we love Colorado too! So much fun! 🤩 thank you for watching!
I was born in Colorado and it is beautiful. I’m new to your channel. Enjoyed your vlog. Your wired hair is a cutie.🫶🏼
Hey 👋 thank you and welcome to the channel we’re glad you here! Wow Colorado is such a special place I had no idea I would fall in love with it! Awww She is a cutie isn’t she 🫶🏼
Taking College Ave. into Old Town.
Hopefully they changed your fuel filter too. I know the oil change is not cheap. And the brakes aren't either. But it's a necessity. Love the hair!
The rotas needing changing was a big shock as we were anticipating the cost of break pads! A bit of a weird one with the fuel filter they had mistaken the cabin filter for the fuel filter and we later realised it wasn’t changed and ended up buying and fitting it ourselves! The van is feeling a lot better to drive except the diesel heater blowing our thick white smoke hoping someone in Utah can have a look at it, all fun and games loving in a van hey Denise 😆 ohhhh thank you hair felt short but cute lol x
The fuel filter is an important one on a diesel vehicle. I learned the hard way after spending 3k on repairs and they didn't change the filter especially since engine light was on. My van went into limp mode about 10x between Edmunston and Fredericton. I finally hobbled into a Walmart parking lot on a Sunday, no mechanics were open. Found one the next day and had to pay another 1000 to change the filter. I'm glad you got it changed ❤❤❤❤
@@NotaFullDeck333 Michael corrected me they did change the fuel filter whilst doing the oil service! we then changed the air filter, bloody hell it’s confusing, oh gosh that sounds awful we’re so glad we got it sorted before learning the hard way too! There’s always something 😬
Beautiful views. Wonderful storytelling. So nice that amidst all that beauty you were remembering your time back here in Nova Scotia. ♥️
Always look forward to you videos. Great videography and poetic narration. You pull us in to become a passenger in your experience, thank you. Love from Vancouver Island, Canada.
@@bradcouper9547 thank you so much that motivated me to keep going I love making these videos but sometimes I wonder if they’re even interesting 😂 so that’s reassuring I appreciate it! Oh wow Vancouver island is a huge bucket list and we’re very excited to be there next year!
You all produce some awesome videos. We will be starting a channel soon. What kind of equipment do you use? Your audio and video is great!
Hey David Thank you I appreciate that ☺️ oh wow what will your Chanel be called ? I actually film on my iPhone 13 Pro but I do have a Fuji XT3 for taking pics I use epidemic sounds for my music and Final Cut Pro to edit my videos, hope this helps
You have come such a long way and still so far to go.
So true it’s a surreal feeling when we stop and think about all the miles and states and places and people along the way, and we’re not even half way through! 😊🫶🏼
At 5:02..thats why you travel and camp...million dollar views in a $10 campsite.
We’ve been so lucky we always stumble across the most beautiful spots to stay by chance and without planning, definitely makes life on the road worth it

Oh my, what a blast on those dunes!! So much hard work climbing back up for such a quick slide down, but every moment a wonderful memory for you both. We bar-b-que all the time. We have one on our verandah, I guess we are spoilt in that regard. You would have loved the 'big sky' at night, something not seen in the cities! Edie is so funny, lots of dogs run from the vacuum!! Hey 👋 thanks for watching and leaving such a lovely comment I’m glad you enjoy watching 😊 awww Edie really is the star of the show isn’t she she’s a Welsh Terrier ❤️
Nice looking steak. Just a tip, it stays warmer longer if you don’t precut it. Looks like y’all are at the base of the Rockies. It gets so much better and beautiful once you’re in the mountains. Good luck.
Wow so beautiful Colorado😮
Colorado really took us by surprise with its beauty 😍
Where are you sand boarding??
We went in the great sand dunes national park on Colorado 😊
Welcome to West...if you're planning to come up to Canada in the Okanagan one day I'll come say hi
Thank you 🙏 will do much appreciated ☺️✨🚐
The San Luis Valley! It'a nice to see someone so excited to be there! I think there other, way more picturesque spots in Colorado, but this is pretty special part of it. Since you are here ... drive up to Gunnison. Goto to Leadville, and Glenwood, Aspen. Especially, go to Telluride!
Loved it there! Aspen was nice…boujeee! We spent the night in Leadville and drove through it the next day we wish we had time to stop and explore as it looked like a great place!
Nova scotia here
Oh man, you're going to looooove the West the further you go in. You're going to be gobsmacked at the natural beauty and solitude at every turn; I know I was. The problem is it's so expansive it's impossible to even scratch the surface at what it has to offer, even for Americans like myself who live here. Your videos are truly breathtaking; you have real storytelling skill. It's the kind of video I watch that makes me take the American landscape and sparse population I'm so accustomed to less for granted. I'm glad you're discovering The Open Road too, which I know probably sounds like a cliche but has been really important to the American psyche and culture throughout history since the frontier days. Walt Whitman wrote a poem about it in 1856. Even back then, the open road was a symbol of progress, freedom, optimism, and self discovery, unencumbered by restraint. The thrill of a journey with no particular destination in mind.
That's such an incredible reflection, thank you! The vastness of the West has already taken me by surprise, and I can only imagine how much more there is to discover. I really appreciate your kind words about my videos it means a lot to know they're resonating in that way. The connection between the open road and self discovery is something I'm really feeling right now, Here's to embracing that journey, no matter where it leads!
I’m enjoying your video travels, expressive stories , and music selection. Artistic video…well done!! Have a great trip and safe travels. ☮️
Thank you that means a lot I’m happy that you can also enjoy something that I love doing ☺️✨
Beautiful!
Thank you for watching ☺️✨

Hey Shaun thank you so much I appreciate that this was one of my favourites so far I really enjoyed editing this one ☺️✨
hi both , hope all ok over there , chucking it down here...again !!.. im sure ive seen that spooky looking house at 1.18ish on some ghost film .. you get a real sense of insignificance on that straight road , michael doing plumbing always knew he was a natural 🙂, absolutely stunning landscapes and skyscapes ...some place to be right enough ... fab vid ...err did i see sprouts ?? much love from sluff x
You sure did sprouts and broccoli’s whenever we can, we love veg lol I thought the house was epic not spooky! Still lots of sunshine over here had a bbq yesterday! x
Enjoyed watching your video. The scenery was amazing! For some reason, I found it incredibly relaxing. 😂😂😂😂😂 I think you did a great job recording, editing and writing/recording some poetic prose over the video. Nicely done.
Thank you I really appreciate that it means a lot to me that I can create something in a way that I love and other people enjoy it too that blows my mind and gives me the encouragement to keep going! Wow I never thought I’d see the day where my voice would be relaxing haha Yesss!
You look so pretty✨
Thank you!!
Leave your hood/bonnet open when parked. Strobe motion sensor lights under the van and under the hood. Mix up a bottle of peppermint spray and spray the tires and under the hood. Mice will be you worst nightmare. Eating electrical wiring. Finding your food. The brushy dry landscape is full of those pesky critters. Mountain lions are out west also. Do the research.
Our United States is a very special place on this planet. I wish our citizens would focus more on how lucky we all are to call it home. Unfortunately, too many of us focus on the things that divide us. Anyway, love following your journey and you do a great job bring us along for the ride. Looking forward to your arrival in my home state of California. The best state by a long shot, but I'm biased. Enjoy and stay safe.
Thank you for watching ☺️ we are in awe of the USA it’s definitely an incredible place there’s is much to say and share about it! Looking forward to continuing our journey west!
Brought back memories. I lived in a bright blue shotgun house on Magazine Street when I was young, not long after graduation from college. I would walk everywhere and eat shrimp etouffe and bread pudding all the time, loved pancakes in the brunch on Saturdays. I could walk the calories off in those days. Don’t miss the heat and humidity but always have a love in my heart for NOLA. Old now, male pattern baldness, arthritis in my left hip, too heavy around the waist, been married to the same woman for 32 years….live in Virginia. Naw’lens got really hurt and quite frankly almost destroyed by Katrina but glad to see it still alive. I can’t even remember any Cajun French which I could speak good enough to get by in the day. Enjoy your trip west, it will get much cooler, maybe even down right cold in the mountains.
So lovely to ready your story, funny the way you typed it made me say it out loud, it’s still hustling and bustling for sure I spoke to a few people about Katrina it’s evident that the city surrender horrifically, incredible that your grew up there I was walking around imagining what it would be like such a vibrant place yet rustic and rough round the edges but so full of spirit and culture, an incredible place! Thank you for sharing and watching ☺️✨🖤
