Remember these? I started as an amateur back in the nineties and this is with what I began my journey. Yep, folks laughed and they weren't cheap back then. I still used them to the best of my ability, believing that I accomplished as much as any with something not as popular. I've participated in repeater nets, fox hunts and other special events. Some products are similar to competitors like Icom. They still have their place, today. Although there are many new kinds of technology, never underestimate the value and reliability in analog, and especially RadioShack and Realistic!
If you find that you have a product to add content to this channel, be it a Realistic or RadioShack product or device, parts, antennas, coax and so forth, something that's just catching dust or it just won't sell, looking for a home for something that needs love, please don't hesitate to leave a comment and I'll arrange to receive and house said products for use in future episodes. I'm not interested in making $.

Motorola Astro Spectra: Metro Richmond ARES Net; Happy Independence Day!
For Entertainment Purposes Only!
I'm an idiot, don't do what I do.
Happy Independence Day, for those who celebrate!
I'm not surprised at neither the participation in numbers on such a holiday or the usual net operation. It's good to gather together as amateurs to communicate no matter the weather or holiday. We celebrate our freedom to do so through service and hobby. We are grateful for to those who have allowed us to enjoy such privileges.
At that, besides NCS, there were nine check-ins including myself.

I personally am not affiliated with the ARES, SKYWARN or EMCOMM organizations. There are many reasons that I cannot commit to service in organizations outside my responsibility at home. Mostly, I cannot be away from home longer than four hours. So, at that, the best I can do is participate in local nets (as allowed) and regular conversation and radio tests. It's not a boring hobby but in reality, very fulfilling. I mostly enjoy watching things work, some general conversation and will assist when and where I can. Generally, most NCS prefer the trained and ready to dispatch upon orders by local officials. I am not officially trained in any of these services, including CERT. I usually monitor as I can to aid in pairs monitoring/maintenance and fellowship.

For Entertainment Purposes! I'm an idiot, don't do what I do. For tonight, I happened to catch the RATS net on 146.880Mhz. Normally, I can't hear that repeater. Tonight, I unplugged a couple chargers and, then I could hear the repeater. So, I monitored the net and afterward, a conversation on the MRA. #astro #frs #gmrs #motorola #radioshack #realistic #richmond #simplex #uhf #cm300

MED-9 repeater: 462.950 MHz The most commonly used mutual aid / interoperability frequency for ambulance to hospital comms in this area. Alternates: HEAR system, specifically “HEAR340” (also called *VMED28*) - 155.340 MHz NFM HEAR consists of three VHF frequencies, HEAR280 (155.280 MHz), HEAR340 (155.340 MHz) and HEAR400 (155.400 MHz). MED-9 and MED-10 are both UHF repeater pairs (MED-10 output is 462.975 MHz). Standard +5 MHz offset / repeater split. Aside from HEAR and MED, everyone must have the ability to transmit and receive on the Virginia Statewide EMS frequency 155.205 MHz. Alright, I'll bite. It's a childhood toy. It, too was broken. Just the steering component but, I gave up on that one, too. I lost the joy in using it, and the interest. I'm still interested and, in sharing with others my experiences. That's the whole reason behind the passion of my channel. If I can finally fix it, that makes me happy, even if I'm alone. "Buddy". But by all means, if it pleases you, continue watching till the end, success or failure.
Yeah whatever it's a real piece of shit radio you really fucked up the display on it it doesn't do anything at all glad I never sold any radios to you you would have used the golden screwdriver like you did with this one and you really burned up the display to where it won't even work might as well toss it in the garbage
Don't really give a shit either people record things all the time on UA-cam there's plenty of conversations that were recorded live on video so don't even mention it at all people are allowed to do whatever the hell they want to do on UA-cam so just back the fuck off on that stop telling people that this and that is not allowed and if you keep it up you're going to risk having your UA-cam account suspended indefinitely because I have that power to disable your account and if you want it back you'll have to pay me money up to $10,000🖕🏿🖕🏿🖕🏿🖕🏿🖕🏿‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️

Hi William, This is Will (KQ4RAM). Thanks for posting these. It's always fun to go back and listen. If nothing else, to self critique as to how I sound on the air. Tonight's net (5/2/24) was also well attended. Since I'm out here in Mechanicsville, it was good to hear about the repeater off 301 coming back online soon. Take care and keep up the good work.
Enjoy your scanner while you can. My area went digital about 5 year's ago. Only thing on the air is airports. Even the city maintenance crew's are gone.
I don't anticipate all services to go digital. A lot of the ones I listen to are analog. The railroad might change.Theres still so much more to listen to other than the police.

The officers aren't on FRS. The passersby are witnessing a traffic stop and are talking about it on the radio as they are stuck in traffic. Why does anyone think the police are on FRS?

Okay, SOTA vs POTA. They are two different events. Both are active by individuals. Summits On The Air is where an operator finds a summit (mountain top) that's probably on a qualifying list, and begins making contacts. Normally, other stations on summits or from other locations actively "hunt" and work each other. Parks On The Air is similar. One activates a national park, again on a list and they will work each other from parks or other locations. These are like sanctioned contests but, can occur at any time by anyone. I suppose once you Work All Countries, Work All States, then all counties, there's little left to qualify for and those are summits and (national/state) Parks. To me, just another participation trophy. For others, it's less work, easier competition and not so much "Field Day". Then again, it's a real hike to many a summit. Ad you can see, Pota activation is simply driving and parking at a park and working like a "Rover" but not driving is a little more comfortable and relaxing.
It’s on a FRS channel so simply change the channel and the problem goes away.
Sure, you can. It might be a non-issue for you but, in many areas even channel three is used for purposes other than music. There is quite a bit of routine traffic in the city and urban areas that want to enjoy the same privilege of using FRS. It's no more "fair" to do this here to the kids and families attempting to learn this resource to keep in touch with each other instead of solely relying on cellphones for some of you as they are. Many parents don't allow their children a cellphone until they are mature enough to handle it. Not only the family could keep up with the kids on the farm or in the neighborhood but, also the neighbors. Sure, there are creeps out there but, be it known there are others listening that care about the safety and welfare of the neighborhood children. Unless you are a solution to them problem well, you are then the problem. I won't let these entitled immigrants take over more valuable resources. Holding conversation on channel is one way to set the example. Not for one minute you should be thinking you can't help resolve this issue in your area!
why is this RARE?
I don't normally do "box openings".
I love those ..vswr power meters ..they work great for exactly what your soing with them...input meter sonu can measure reflection.. and output
Just received a second one, put it inline with the Motorola Radius CM 300. Tunes the dual band, mag mount just fine for 70cm/GMRS.
I have a 5watt Hand Held with an Abbree Folding Antenna & I was impressed that it easily & clearly hit a Repeater at least 12 miles away through Pennsylvania Hills.
GMRS repeaters are not reliable. The operators get all butt hurt over somebody hogging the channel so they change the tones so only a select few have access to it.
They do own the repeaters and it's not a contact hobby like amateur radio.
@@william_k4arx I got into GMRS thinking it would be a good backup for emergencies when I'm off roading in AZ by myself. It worked great the first few times I was in remote parts of AZ in all my favorite shooting spots then one weekend it didn't. I discovered the repeater owner changed tones. Fortunately I didn't have a breakdown where I needed help. I solved that problem with an iPhone 14 that has the SOS function. GMRS is dead except for offroad clubs that go out in a 10 vehicle caravan and operate in simplex only.
Yeah, why do they have it "Open" if they don't want it used lol.
@@davidyummus6259 They use their own money to buy the equipment then put it on a mountain top in the middle of nowhere and set it up with some serious lithium batteries on a solar system so it's virtually maintenance free and will leave it open for awhile until people using it start getting crazy like you would expect to hear on a CB radio channel so they change the rx-tx tones. Understandable when you consider it costs upwards of $1000 for a decent setup.
They are like the charater Gullum from the Movie that says " My Precious" . Better off just getting your own 50 watt gmrs radio and a good antenna.
Title says gmrs... but what are you operating to talk to michigan? 2m SSB?
The Zello app, a side hobby. They're cb'ers and we've been talking to each other for a few years.

It should be tagged as "Richmond, Virginia".
Licensed operators need get on the radio on GMRS, since FRS is secondary And let folks actually hear proper operations actually sound like.
Wish parents would at least take the time to teach them how to use a radio properly
True, just hard to do in an economy with inflation and working 2 jobs for both parents. Not the 60s anymore for sure. I guess thats why schools exist right?

Them kids are the future hams of America. 😉
Let's hope so!
these kids are a menace to the airwaves. these radios are not toys and kids do not need to be on them until they are 18+. 🤨
@@jessihawkins9116 i disagree. Like many, there need be education on such subjects. Not just the children but, the adult's alike. FRS is just what it is. Family Radio Service, a replacement for the other Citizen band services. The radios, their output power and limited distance is perfect for attending children at a distance and perhaps, teaching them skills with wireless devices. The adults should take responsibility at some point to not only let the child play with the bubble pack radios but, teach them that there are more reasons to communicate than just play games and press buttons. Remember, of you're not part of the solution, you're merely part of the problem.
@@william_k4arx sarcasm for those uptight hams hamming up the waves saying this? lol. Seriously, why can adults be worse than kids? Those FRS / GMRS radios have longer range than the old 49mhz radios we use to have back in the day. Most of those 49mhz radios didn't have squelch circuits. Especially in the single channel walkie talkies.
