    City of Truro is the oldest engine to have run with a main line ticket, at 110 years old. The next nearest is Flying Scotsman at 100 years old.

    • @traintakes
      @traintakes 8 годин тому

      Excellent. I think I recall there being mentions previously that after Truro's last mainline ticket, the decision was opted not to renew because it couldn't manage the same loads as other engines (and probably to avoid knocking it to bits) and therefore wasn't as commercial viable. Maybe we'll see it for the GWR's 200th anniversary though, that would be nice!

    I live only about 45 minutes from the EMD Assembly Plant in La Grange Illinois, near Chicago in the U.S. I traveled to the UK this summer and spent some time train spotting. It was great to see the Class 66 in action but I had no idea that it was an American design based in the venerable SD40, which I’ve seen plenty of times, with some being built not far from my home! Mainly the Class 59s but some 66s were built at the La Grange assembly I think. Keep up the great work! Cheers from Chicago Illinois, USA!🇺🇸🇬🇧

      So apparently there was a bidding process and MTR did bid for the renewal, but they decided to go in a different direction. This article explains in more detail - www.cityam.com/chinese-owned-mtr-loses-elizabeth-line-contract/ Quite interesting - MTR obviously had a lot significant milestones with the project, but it seems to be down to operational performance and the west wanting to rely less on China.

    Apart from the English Eletric Lightning fighter plane, and the Vulcan bomber I can assure fellow fans there is no sound on earth like multiple class 66s at full power (Run 8) hauling heavy freight on the ECML early on cold crisp mornings on the fast straight from York to Darlington. No idea what they were hauling or where they were going but I'll never forget that noise that shakes the air you breath.
