One VERY important procedure not shown is to place the cylinder to top dead center on compression stroke. If not there is a good chance the cam, can jump a tooth or two when you remove the tensioner. Then you have to remove engine and retime each cam.

No it doesn't, from memory the caps are slightly different which would only be an issue if you had a big tank it may contact. But as far as the operation of them they both fire at the same time so makes no difference

I'm surprised.why does no one bother with the fact that by increasing the stroke of the tensioner you violate the calculation of chain tension.as a result, this leads to the fact that the chain begins to saw the wells of candles, until the oil goes! Don't do that. If the tensioner is over, you need to change the chain, not extend the tensioner!

@astonebrook91 only gear issues I am aware of are the 16 17 models with the circlip. Part was never superceeded so would have just been a bad batch. Earlier models are known for 3rd gear blow ups no new ones have this happen I am aware of.

Unfortunately, this is the wrong way to go - the timing chain has been undersized from the first model in '89 to the present day. The chain is getting longer and longer, so it only helps to lengthen the chain tensioner for a short time. I have had very good experiences with DID chains, they are better than original Kawasaki chains.

I could not agree more. I fell for the hype many years ago, tried 16t front sprockets on both a DR650SE and a Kawasaki KLR650C. The KLR got away slightly better but the large step between 1st and 2nd gear felt even bigger. The experience I had with the DR650SE was pretty much the same you mentioned. The bike felt anaemic, I had to take even more care not to let the revs drop and end up with the engine just yanking on the chain. Accelerating and overtaking between 90km/h and 120km/h the bike felt like it had a power restriction and would not do much unless geared down into 4th or even 3rd. Both the KL650C and DR650SE used more fuel with the 16t front sprockets.

By 1150gs saved my life when I was taken out by a round hay bale dropped off the front of a tractor some way up the hill. I stayed in the gap between engine and panniers, resulting in minor damage to jacket (and shoulder), and scuffs elsewhere. Although slightly bent, it started first time, and I rode it home from Luxembourg to Bath, England. How many modern electrical gizmo loaded bikes will do that. My son recently took it to Switzerland, but they wanted it factory spec to be registered there. So I flew out and rode it back in a day. Didn’t miss a beat. Had a grin on all the way back. Love it, even if it makes no sense really to keep it.

Thanks for sharing! I know it's been many years, but just a heads up, in case anyone wants to do this mod. Regarding the material you used to fill the hole. If two different metals come in contact, and an electrically conductive medium contacts them, say salt water from a beach trip or road de-icing. One of the 2 metals will exhibition galvanic corrosion. Tin and steel have small difference in nobility, but steel will act as the anode. Which is the opposite of what you want. Its better to use the same metal or a more anodic metal to sacrifice itself to protect the frame.
