The Rings of Power: What You Need to Know About the Music
Evenstar is such a beautiful theme. Shore outdid himself with this.
The juxtaposition of Gollum’s final treachery while Aragorn’s oath is heard… the fact that Frodo had to trust someone fully corrupted by the Ring and could at any point believe that the one who would never give up on hope probably died. That’s the how beautiful this segment is, even with all the darkness that will follow afterwards.
Excellent analysis, especially the part referencing Schoenberg. Well done!
Typo at 0:34 (Mordos's should be Mordor's)
I just realised we have heard the main phrase Gondor in Decline in Bm earlier in the trilogy: during Boromir's death and funeral. To play it in full here is not only relevant as his brother is seemingly facing the same fate, but the foreshadowing of Boromir's dying words "all will come to darkness, and my city to ruin" is brought to the front and centre by the score. The score is a work of pure genius
The Orc Crawl also appears right before Boromir is shot with his first arrow, relating Aragorn racing to save Merry and Pippin with his race to save Boromir.
04:34 You mean... straight from Doug's mouth?
That's a joke from a bit before my time
@@monoverantus I was there, Gandalf, I was there 3000 years ago... Just kidding, I wasn't there, I learned it from Chen G. (Or someone else, I don't remember xD)
So excited to see a new video from you! Really looking forward to a detailed deep dive when the series launches!
This gives me very contradictory feelings, because while I like his apparently glossaric approach with the themes, it makes this movie even more undeniably canon with the trilogy. That means these costumes (and events and probably retcons we still don't know of yet) are canon too and that's decidedly what I can't wrap my head around. Hera's outfit is the least middle-earthian and unrealistic costume I could have imagined it makes me enjoy Rings of Power. Why couldn't the character design staff try to reproduce the care that went into costumes for the original trilogy too? Anyway, now with each department approaching the tie-in differently now it all feels... a schizophrenic mess.
Sadly, I personally think this has been the case ever since the wake of the original trilogy. If WotR turns out to be a badly written cash-grab with great music, then you can throw it on the same pile as The Hobbit and The Rings of Power (and most likely the upcoming Gollum movie too). However, if it actually defies the trend and gives a genuine Tolkienian experience, I can forgive a couple of lore detractions and questionable design choices.
Happy (belated) Halloween! I was so happy to finally get a real microphone last year, but ever since I got a new phone a few months ago (which has switched the 3,5 connector jack for a USB-C), that mic has only been giving diminshing returns (I did a whole recording of this video which ended up having no usable audio). So these last videos I've regressed to just using the phone's inbuilt mic, and hope to get a NEW new mic soon. Technology: Trick or Treat? 🤔
Yay! A new video. Always welcome.
Great video as always! We are very happy that the Lord of the Rings universe is expanding from Warner Bros. The soundtrack is very important in these movies, we believe it is in good hands, we are already excited to see the movie. By the way, the credits song will be released on November 14, and we believe that the complete soundtrack of the movie could be released, we look forward to you reviewing it.
I found the tresure channel. thank you
love how peter jackson adapted tolkien's musical like writing. instead of taking the music out or having the members break into song every 5 min, he incorporated it into the soundtrack making you feel the culture and power of the area
the first 44 seconds of this is the greatest leitmotif ever
This piece is one those art pieces that whenever I hear it makes me feel goosebumps. Full of hope and as the videos mentions redemption through weakness. A slept rage of human race surging its veins to take control of its own freedom
I can still hear his grunts when the song is playing😢😢😢
I think the Concerning Stoors sounds like a mix between Nori Brandyfoot and the Harfoots. The melody uses the principle instruments from both themes used together and takes a compound meter from Harfoots but the Dorian mode from Nori. After watching Season 2, it does fit quite well that Concerning Stoors is like a child theme of the two
A Hobbit’s Understanding says goodbye to this first live-action movie exploring Middle-earth, but it also caps off the third Hobbit movie’s end credits’ song: The Last Goodbye.
Wow...the lyrics sung during Éowyn's fight with the Witch King are absolutely chilling! I LOVE the details they put into each text throughout the movies!
There's something intriguing about those mystical woods man lothlorien the ambience of this is god-tier so effing good.
Could you describe what Maqām Hijaz is? I think I can hear it in the slurring of the strings, that does sound very Middle Eastern.
Oh my, how beautiful is this... these movies are much more significant to me now that I'm older compared to back then as a small boy.. & that's saying a lot.
Probably my favorite segment of the movie it's just too good.
I remember how big this film was back in the day during my childhood and the part when Boromir became a meme ever since I was hooked. Aging like wine. Best movies ever!
After seeng the return of the king extended in theaters this past summer, and now watching these analysts videos of the trilogy bro I'm addicted.
Man this channel is underrated & deserves more attention, this is just brilliantly done to me.
Very impressive work right here.
7:40 Isn't this theme being played by a flute instead of a whistle?
At 7:25, there's a very brief interjection of the Rohan theme as the map passes by.
What I love about this scene is that during the filming, Peter invaded a cricket stadium to get the entire crowd invovled. Not only did the crowd get invovled, but both cricket teams got alongside each other to do the Uruk chants that we hear in this scene.
Funny, this opening reminds me Foundation. edit Just read on Google that is the same composer hahahahaha
I think you're confused. Bear McCreary, who scored both Foundation and Rings of Power, didn't make the opening. Howard Shore did.
@@monoverantus Yes, I saw it later.
It’s hard to explain, but nothing encapsulates the dread, the mystery, the sorrow, the ancient history of Death more than the Diminishment of the Elves motif. I think this is Shore’s greatest of the minor pieces from this Trilogy.
You can’t help but feel safe yet free in this introduction to the Rivendell Theme.
I never noticed how the music of the Ringwraiths rises in weight with each appearance they make to the Hobbits. It makes so much literal sense as their number grows. One, then four, then five, then all nine.
The Ringwraith theme, as with many bad guy beats or score that wants to proclaim impending doom, has similarity to the “Dies Iræ Dies Illa” Gregorian chant-the echoey chorus only heightens that.
I do miss the additional choral opening found in the abridged soundtrack and while it’s not actually in the movie, I think it should have been edited into the Extended Edition soundtrack. Really underscores the Wizards’ curses and sorcery suddenly being unleashed.
Rosie Cotton, the star of every Hobbit ball.
Everyone talks about Viggo's toe at 4:08, but what about Karl Urban's sword falling out of it's scabard at 2:58?
You are a god damn hero for uploading all this wonderful work. Thank you so much for this incredibly rich and sensible analysis. I binged watched everything during the night and I couldn't feel more in love with the music of middle earth as I was discovering the movies as if I had never watched them. You made me live many powerful moments throughout your videos. You deserve more recognition and praise. ❤
Brilliant and illuminating explanation of my favorite LOTR music. Thank you for sharing your insights! 👏🏻👍🏻
Great video my man! Brilliant work
I came across one of your videos 10 minutes ago being the one of The Lighting Of The Beacons which is my very favourite scene of the triology. Then I saw your whole channel was dedicated to and had analysed all of the music in depth, and the first video I looked for was this one right here as Aniron is my favourite theme of all of the LOTR music. It was amazing seeing someone actually analyse the theme. Now I will watch all your videos from the first one to the last one, as I've finally come across in-depth analysis of Howard Shores music!
0:58 This would have fit very well. The transition was pretty seamless, but I think this also works because Legolas' theme tends to play during his more heroic/serious moments. In the Hobbit, he is much more ruthless in his loyalty to Thranduil, so including it here would be a neat musical reference to his youthful ferocity that he lets out to defend his friend Gimli. This and the Oliphant sequence would be what I'd personally include if a full re-edit were possible. Well done!
Oh yes, Gandalf and his sword, Glamdring. Warra duo
About the only good thing about the show
2:10 - 2:21 - Reminiscent of Shore's sudden, bombastic yet almost mournful orchestral sequences in Se7en as well as Silence of the Lambs with the lowering brass notes.
I think they should have kept the music from 4:45 onward. The original sequence was just too much like a horror movie. When the music is there, the tone of Smeagol's transition into Gollum has a more tragic and melancholic tone because at the end of the day, he is the Ring's greatest victim and eventually it's slave.
0:13 Frodo:ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH!
