Somatic Yoga for Spine Health - Yoga with Rachel
Welcome to your Somatic Yoga for Spine Health practice. (↓Open for more details!).
❤️ I’ve written several blog posts on somatic yoga that you might find interesting. You can learn about what somatic yoga is, the benefits, and explore somatic exercises here: www.yogawithrachelmarie.com/blog ❤️
We begin today’s practice by bringing awareness to the breath. Breathwork is an essential part of spinal health as it can help open up the energetic pathways that run along the spine. During our breathwork practice, there’s an invitation to visualize a ball of light flowing up and down the length of your spine.
Once we’ve connected with our breath, we’ll explore gentle spinal movements, using the earth beneath us as sensory feedback.
After some movement on the back, we’ll transition to a seated position, giving you the opportunity to observe how your spine responds to movement in a different relationship to gravity.
Next, we transition to all fours, offering space to explore organic, intuitive movement. Here, we will integrate what we’ve explored thus far. You’ll also have an opportunity to explore guided movement in a different relationship with gravity, offering perhaps a new perspective on how your spine moves in space.
We'll close our practice in Child’s Pose, offering you a quiet moment to absorb and savor all the nourishment and benefits of this somatic yoga experience.
Somatic practices invite you to listen to your body’s internal sensations. The invitation is to allow your sensations to guide and inform your practice.
If your body asks to linger in a pose, the invitation is to honor that message. If something doesn’t feel good, the invitation is to explore a variation that does. Somatic practices are about choice, welcoming you to move in a way that feels good and nourishing.
I am here to support you as a guide. You’re welcome to follow my guidance, or move in a way that feels authentic to you. You have the freedom to set your own pace, rhythm, repetitions, and breathing pattern-exploring what feels like a welcome gesture in your body.
Feel free to return to this somatic yoga practice for the spine whenever it feels good.
Sending love to you! 💜

    Thanks good practice! I need to use the top of my foot of my grounding leg more to half firmly press down for support in bird dog. I liked the extended child pose, in addition to releasing, i can melt my chest in towards the floor one more milimeter, and I get a small upper back and hip release.

    Thanks! I liked the seated pose side bend, for me it's a good way to invite a drop in tension. It's still hard for me to explore in poses which is just being super present. I keep thinking stretch versus be present.

    • @YogawithRachel
      @YogawithRachel 5 днів тому

      Hey Tristan! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with me! I'm happy to hear that the seated side bend resonated with you. Dropping out of thinking and into being present in the body can be challenging! I find myself moving back and forth between thinking and feeling throughout some of my practices. Sometimes the thoughts can take me out of present moment, and that's okay! What I experiment with is focusing on how the "stretch" feels in my body. I will then breathe into that area for a few cycles of breath while keeping my attention there. Shortly after, my mind may then drift back to my thoughts. When I notice this, I may explore whether that thought is connected to a feeling in my body. I then go inward to locate that feeling or sensation in my body. I can go back and forth between thinking and feeling throughout a practice as there can be thoughts or external factors that can grab my attention. I may also repeat an affirmation throughout my practice as a way to anchor me back to the present moment. These are strategies that work well for me! You're welcome to give them a try if they resonate with you 🤗 I love that you're showing up and exploring your inner landscape! Even a brief moment of being present can be such a gift to the mind and body! As always, I appreciate you practicing with me! Enjoy the rest of your day!! Take care 🤗🙏✨

    • @tristantandberg
      @tristantandberg 4 дні тому

      Thanks for the strategy! Yes breathing into areas you are observing is good. Also lots of thoughts are connected to feelings. So if you unwind a feeling you can quiet thoughts. Some of my feelings behind a thought are a group of feelings like inside out, voltron, or a dog pack.

    • @YogawithRachel
      @YogawithRachel 10 днів тому

      Hello 🤗 Thank you so much for sharing your practice with me! I am so happy to hear that you loved the feel of this practice! The movement with the bent leg mobilizes the lower back, and it gets into the hips and pelvis. In my experience, when I increase the range of motion, this movement can feel like a back massage. This can help release tension or holding patterns in the body, especially in the upper back, as well as the area between the spine and shoulder blade. With that said, with somatic practices, it's all about making the practice your own and finding what feels good in your body. So, it's all good if the movement turned into a spinal twist 😊 I love that you made the movement you own! I appreciate you being here ❤️ I hope that you have an awesome day! Take good care 🙏💕

    • @YogawithRachel
      @YogawithRachel 10 днів тому

      Hello 🤗 My understanding of your question is "Do I think that somatics is yoga?" Is this what you're asking? If so, here's my personal opinion and understanding. Yoga is the union between mind, body and spirit. Yoga is a somatic practice because it is a mindbody practice. With that said, some yoga practices can focus more on a goal or objective. For example, some practices may focus more on alignment or achieving a particular shape. If the focus is on the external, then I wouldn't necessarily say it is a somatic practice. Somatic yoga places emphasis on the internal experiences. In other words, how the movement, pose, and breathwork feels in your body. Somatic yoga practices invite you to fully embody the experience, making the practice uniquely yours. It's about tuning into your body's inner wisdom (that inner voice that tells you what feels good/nourishing and what doesn't). So, when you add somatic principles to a yoga practice, it can truly elevate one's practice. It can lead to a deeper connection to self. I hope that this answers your question. 😊 Thank you!

    I enjoyed your calming voice. How do I feel breath in different parts of my body. Does that mean focus of that part while breathing ?

    • @YogawithRachel
      @YogawithRachel 13 днів тому

      Hello 🤗 Thank you so much for your kind words and for practicing with me! Thank you for your question. One way to explore sending your breath to different parts of your body is through the mindbody connection which can be accessed in different ways. One way that I find helpful is placing my hands on the areas I would like to send my breath to. For example, if I am exploring belly breathing, I can place two hands on my belly and encourage my breath to move in the direction of my hands. Hands offer sensory feedback when it comes to breath awareness practices. It may also feel more accessible to sense your breath in different parts of your body when you're lying on your back. This can invite the entire body to relax, which can encourage the breath to flow more readily to various parts of the body. Using the feedback from the ground, you may also sense how your back body expands on the breath in, and softens on the breath out. Another way is visualizing your breath moving to different parts of your body. So, although we don't have lungs in our hips, when we direct our awareness to our hips and play around with sending breath there, one may feel a sensation that feels like expansion (breathing in) and contraction (breathing out). As with all somatic practices, there's no right or wrong. These breathwork practices are exercises that you can play around with if it feels good in your body. I hope that this helps answer your question! Thank you!! Take good care 🙏💕

      Hi Dani 🤗 I am so happy that you joined me on the mat for this practice! I love that you showed up for you. I love that you are listening to your body, meeting yourself where you are in the moment, and honoring your needs ❤️ It is an honor to create classes for you and this lovely community. I am so grateful that I get to be a part of your journey, and that you're a part of my journey as well 🤗 This is a great question - I feel that it's all about finding what feels good for you in the moment. If you feel up for more movement throughout your day, then feel free to explore another class! Speaking from personal experience, I've had days where I just feel a lot of different emotions within me. To help me move the energy, I may explore two different types of yoga classes; one that is more energizing and a somatic practice (meditation, restorative, yin, etc.). I feel like it comes down to considering what you need in the moment and what would feel like a kind gesture. The beauty of these online classes is that if you start a practice, you can pause or stop the practice at any point if it isn't serving you well at that moment. I hope this answers your question! Sending love and light to you 🤍 Take good care 🙏

    Thanks! Good practice. Lazy day yoga is tough if you aren't equally lazy on both sides you could end up working one side harder and end up with muscle imbalances. Good cue to do arm lift seated side bend with thumb pointed back to work different muscles. My palms always face forward in my side bends.

    • @YogawithRachel
      @YogawithRachel 19 днів тому

      Hey Tristan! Thank you so much for sharing your reflections and practice with me! This is such an interesting comment regarding muscle imbalances - one side working harder than the other side. It's great to bring awareness to this, and to perhaps bring in some somatics, inviting curiosity and compassion into the explorations. I am so happy to hear that you liked that cue as it can help activate different muscle groups. As always, it's so wonderful to learn about your experiences and explorations on the mat! I appreciate you 🤗 Take care, and have an awesome rest of your day 🙏✨

    Hi Rachel. I’ve been doing this chair yoga for 3 months, 5 days a week. It’s helping tremendously! Is there another chair routine that incorporates other moves? I’m 71 and struggle getting up and down for floor routines. Thank you.

      Hi Kathy 🤗 It's so nice to hear from you! I'm so happy to hear that this somatic chair routine is serving you well!! Currently, I do not have another somatic chair yoga routine. With that said, I have two other somatic routines that you can explore from a chair or a bed: Somatic Yoga for Neck & Shoulders ua-cam.com/video/IgAstcme36U/v-deo.html and Seated Somatic Yoga Routine ua-cam.com/video/SOxGIhgyukA/v-deo.html There are some postures in the seated routine that may need to be modified, like the wide legged stance. Feel free to skip any postures, or adjust them to suit your needs ❤️ I will add another somatic chair yoga practice to the channel within the next two months so that way you and others have another option 😊 I appreciate you sharing your time, energy, and practice with me! Enjoy the rest of your day, and take good care 🙏🤍

    Is this good for Fibromyalgia? It's been recommended that I try it. Many thanks.

    • @YogawithRachel
      @YogawithRachel 19 днів тому

      Hello 🤗 Thank you so much for your question! Somatic movement practices typically consist of gentle movements that use the ground for sensory feedback. The movements are usually slow in order to help elicit the relaxation response, which can encourage the release of muscular tension. The slower pace can help heighten body awareness, strengthening the mindbody connection (this can be helpful for rewiring habitual movement patterns that can sometimes contribute to stiffness or muscular tension). What I love most about somatic practices is that you are empowered to make the practice your own. The instructor serves as a guide, offering ideas or suggestions for you to try. With that said, the invitation is to listen to what your body is communicating to you throughout your practice. You are encouraged to explore what would feel good, nourishing, and supportive. Somatic practices are said to be a useful movement practice for chronic pain/symptoms. If you decide to move through this practice, I encourage you to listen to your body. If something doesn't feel good, you can explore another option, reduce the range of motion, or find a comfortable seat of your choosing as you bring your awareness to your breath. Feel free to let me know how this practice feels in your body if you decide to give a try! Thank you for being here! Enjoy the rest of your day, and take care 🙏🤗

My anxiety has been so high. But I will continue to do what I can of your classes throughout my treatment. Even if it’s just 20 mins I can lay there and breathe and “try” and relax I will take it.
