I totally agree about the reading planner, I will also be using it (as soon as I'm done with the current one I'm using). And right?! The end pages and edges were seriously different from the rest of the book design and felt very off to say the least. Totally understand the pain of having books pushed back, so many books to read and so little time! I finished The Spellshop over the weekend and absolutely loved it! Gave it a 4 out of 5 stars. It has some serious whimsical, fun, cozy vibes with a main character who loves books, I hope you end up enjoying it! And yay! That is great news from OwlCrate!!! Thank you for sharing 💕

That's totally fair. I was also shocked that they were including sequels as one of the choices in their TBR boxes, I don't think it's a good model and I don't like it. However, I had a long time subscriber reach out and let me know that they apparently did a survey and that majority of subscribers voted to have the sequels available in the TBR boxes instead of a separate purchase and that spares would always be available in the shop after boxes went out. Again like you, I don't like this model but I can appreciate that they allowed their subscribers to have a voice and followed what the majority wanted. I also buy their special annotated editions for books that I love but haven't decided if I will continue the TBR sub, thankfully I have till January to make that decision.

Aw I love that your teen gets this box! I've had a positive experience with OwlCrate across the years, they generally do a good job with their boxes and their books are very beautiful and typically enjoyable picks. And yeah, I do not blame anyone for being tired of pins, the book boxes have definitely oversaturated us with them! Totally agree with you about the gorgeous artwork on the reversible cover. One of my favorite things about the OC books is the artists they use and all the fantastic artwork we end up with on the covers (or reverse cover) and end papers 💕

OMG I am laughing so hard at myself right now because I read hippocampus and went, "WTF, there is a part of the brain on this cover?!" 🤦‍♀ I work in mental health so the brain hippocampus came to my mind first before I remembered the mythical creature 🤣 Lol, the striped sweaters from the 80s, that is a good description and I can totally see it. And right, the ribbon bookmark in my book from the OC YA July was just sad and I laughed when I saw that they just glued it together. Whatever tho, I love the ribbon bookmarks but it really is a minor detail so not gonna complain. If you don't mind me asking, what book were you reading that had a hippocampus in it?

Hey there, I am not in Canada so I'm not sure. I do believe that OwlCrate is a Canadain company so I would expect them to be relatively cheaper to have shipped to Canada than say The Bookish Box. You could always ask this question in Reddit under one of the Book Subscription communities or FantasyBookBoxes. Hope that helps! 💕

Right?! The crowns are amazing! And yeah unfortunately, the mousepad was just ugly. The character art was so beautiful and yeah, the book would have been stunning with a purple hardcase. Oh that is exciting! I really do hope that they catch up. It will be really nice to have the boxes the month of 💕

I am SO excited to read the book, it will be a nice change in pace for me to have a humorous fiction as I've been reading a lot of fantasy, which I absolutely love but I really enjoy switching things up too. And right?! Having the reward points being an option to pick for the first 2 tiers is really awesome! I like getting some of their special editions and merch outside of the TBR box so I end up using them. And nice, love the Wicked Notebook, it is pretty. I'm excited for our August TBR boxes as well, I do believe mine will be delayed though if I'm not mistaken due to the book choice I made. I might be misremembering but I could have sworn there was an email sent out saying that one of the books was behind schedule or had printing issues of some kind. Regardless, I will be thrilled once I get the August box!

Yes, I do love that they allow items to be skipped for credit especially since I do end up buying some of their special editions outside of their box sub. They often do special editions of popular series that are annotated by the author which is cool and different from other special editions. I was also shocked that they did sequels of special edition books that they did in the past as one of the options in their book sub but found out from a long term subscriber that it was voted on by subscribers to do that way. There was a preference to include them as one of the options instead as a separate purchase. I don't necessarily like it or think it's a great model but I do appreciate that the company did a survey and allowed the subscribers to decide how to deal with sequels. Thanks for watching! 💕

@@LJG7654 Yeah, I did not know that they did that until after I subscribed, I was not thrilled. But this is exactly why they offer 2 books per box I guess 🤷‍♀ I think a better business model would be to offer 2 different books per month that aren't sequels and then have the sequels be a 3rd option if people want them in the box. That's probably asking way too much tho 😅

@@nikkilovesbooks i have an update on sequels. In a recent Litjoy live, the owners indicated that they may not continue putting the sequels in the book box. They are looking to see what the best option is moving forward. I was one of the people that voted to keep in the box, but I'm reconsidering this since it limits the book selections we have each month. I do understand that it's a cost savings for some people to keep it in the box. They talked about a 3rd option in the beginning, but I’m not sure if that’s easy to program.

Ohhh that is good to know, I love learning random facts especially about animals, thank you! I actually still use mouse pads even though mice don't technically need them. I just feel like it provides more smoothness especially since I game sometimes on my computer. I enjoy the wrist pad ones though. It definitely wasn't their best designed crown but absolutely the best item in this box. And omg a glowing cover would have been amazing! I totally forgot that OC's Hotel Magnifique did that. And thank you! I was able to edit out most of the background noise thankfully. We are all okay, very fortunate that we didn't even end up having to evacuate and all evacuation warnings have been lifted for our town. The fire is still very active so we still have to remain vigilant but hopefully they will get it contained within the week 🤞

@@nikkilovesbooks Fingers crossed you're right and they can get it contained! I can't imagine how scary this must be! I'm in the midwest, so deal with tornadoes and blizzards (usually not at the same time) but am glad we don't have to deal with fires like that! If you like glowing covers, you might want to check out Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore! The cover on that is amazing! The book was also a good read. :)

Honestly I would like to speak to the universe and see if I can have Cali unsubscribed from wildfires, we already have earthquakes. I think one natural disaster per area is enough. Plus with wildfires you end up with firenados (actual tornados made of fire caused due to extreme heat and surface winds) and those are a hell no for me 🙅‍♀ And oh? Yes, I love their crowns! They are so pretty 😍 And from what I understand, the crowns in the shop are separate from crowns in the boxes. They are so people without the box subscription can get crowns too but I could be wrong 🤷‍♀

While I love the vibrant green sprayed edges, I was also very disappointed that it was just sprayed and not stenciled edges. I was also under the impression that there was gonna be stenciled edges this month, now I'm being told it will be September. Hopefully we will get them then 🤞

Thank you so much for this update! I figured that may have been the case as I know other book companies were having their books printed overseas to be able to do the stenciled edges. Looking forward to August books and seeing those stenciled edges! And I totally agree, it should always be a true reversible cover with the title on the cover and spine. WIthout those it just doesn't make it a reversible dust jacket, just makes it some artwork on the other side of the cover. I love the idea of reversible dust jackets because choices and options are always a good thing because people have different preferences. 💕

Ohhhh I will have to check out the FL version, I'm sure it is so pretty! And keep eyes on the OwlCrate shop, they usually have extras of items so I'm sure you'll be able to snag the items you wanted from this box. And LOVED the Assistant to the Villain!!!! It was so good and now I am waiting impatiently for the 2nd with you! 💕

Yeah, it was overall a mediocre box, nothing special at all. And you have a great memory, they have done all these items in one fashion or another. And yes so agreed! While I was disappointed about not having stenciled edges (again), the green spayed edges were a very nice fit to the book and a beautiful color. Plus a nice change from the typical blues/purples we normally get, which of course aren't bad colors but overused by OC in my opinion. OMG I totally forgot that This Poison Heart is by the same author! I also enjoyed that book but never got around to completing the duology, I may need to. 💖

@@nikkilovesbooks It helps that I was just using the highlighters to put my planner together (I go from Aug-July since I teach). I'm a fan of purples and blues so I won't complain but I still like a change every once in a while too! And that green is very striking! I've read both in the duology and I really liked them both! The sequel is definitely worth the read! I wish OC would've done a matching edition but honestly, the regular book is pretty close.

Ugh, they are frustrating me so much because they were on a roll with getting their boxes out and I wholeheartedly thought they would be caught up my May. And yet, here we are again with them taking another huge break because they switched their distribution partner (for like the 3rd time) 😤 It's so frustrating and I don't blame anyone who cancels because of how far behind they are!

OMG I feel that on a deep level, I also had to pull in my book spending habits! Always a hard decision to make tho. And totally fair, no reason to have multiple special editions of the same book (especially if space is an issue) and getting a special edition of a book you're not interested in seems like a waste of money too. I'm glad you got this special edition since it was a book you were interested in! I did enjoy House of Beating Wings but it started out a bit slow for me ended up being really enjoyable. And yeah, I agree that the face on the cover kinda kills it. Would have been much better without that character artwork on the cover. But yes, the edges are chef's kiss! 🤌

@@nikkilovesbooks Fingers are crossed! I will say the sequel for Six Crimson Cranes was a bit up and down, the story changes pretty drastically about 1/3 of the way in and takes a bit to readjust, but I'd say 4 star reads for both of them.
