I buy almost entirely used gear. I am a hobbyist, having sold no photos but having placed one on a newspaper front page above the fold (it was over 20 years ago, and I was employed by that paper as a writer). I have used KEH, but I usually find the better deals on MPB. When I'm looking for something specific, I always check both.

I always advice beginners to get a 35mm Lens (85mm if they want a longer focal length). The 35mm Lens is one of the most "easy" Lenses to use, that is why you see millions of old fixed Lens analogue compact Cameras with 35mm (or 38,40mm) Lenses. I have two 35mm Lenses, a 35mm 2.0 which is second to none in image quality and a 35mm 2.8 that is very compact and light weight.

I totally understand how it feels to want to put the DSLR down for a while! My fav camera to carry is a canon G5x- mk 2. It’s small enough to fit in my pocket and works well for casual images, but it also shoots a 20 megapixel file, so if I happen to capture something special or just get lucky, I’m able to give an image some love in Lightroom and maybe print a large piece. I’m just glad you’re having fun with a pocket camera!!! Cheers!

If what you do was easy, everybody would do it. This is the first video of yours that I’ve come across, but I can feel your frustration. Do you still enjoy taking pictures? Maybe put the camera gear away for a day or a week, cause it sounds like you could use a break! And so you know, I wouldn’t go out in the snow in Maine at 6:00 am -fuck that! But you did so clearly you’re a disciplined human! Do you have a web site where I could see some of your images? I’d like to check them out! Thanks for sharing in such an honest way! Cheers!

Very well-put! As with any art form, photography is a craft before it becomes an art. With very few exceptions over the years (Mozart comes to mind), it's essential to 1) learn the basics well so that you have a solid foundation to build on; and 2) to stretch yourself as you build on that foundation. As I musician, I can tell you this: It's human nature to want to practice what you're already good at, because then you get the instant gratification of accomplishment. But, you're doing yourself a serious disservice if you limit yourself to what you're good at. Instead, determine what you need to improve on, and work hard on that. In photography, I've gotten rather good at getting "sun-stars", which can definitely add a certain something to a photo. OTOH, if all I do is take pictures of the sun shining through a tree or peeping out from a cloud at f/22, what good is that doing me?

You have to sacrifice something for great photos. Comfort is usually the harder thing to sacrifice, especially in winter. A lot of the hard work involves some unexpected skills. Listening. Seeing. Waiting. And looking into the mirror and practicing the expression: "And that will cost 20,000 dollars."

You peaked! I did subscribe. I found your stream this morning. I am using the R5; however, I am a long term Nikon DSLR shooter up until 2 years ago. I am trying something different even at my age. I have a few RF lenses. The one I have used mostly is the 24-105 f/4. I did pick up the 35mm f/1.4 VC lens earlier this year. Not a bad lens. I do not shoot video so it is over kill somewhat. I have a 50mm f/1.8 and it is a nice little lens. The lens I also use a lot is the 70-200mm, f/2.8 I use that for rodeos, livestock, horses and such. My 15-35 and 100-500mm is my landscape combo. I am just an old boy with too many toys! I am living in Wyoming. Gosh I know about the wind and the cold. Some mornings I just want to think about getting outside. I shoot for myself so I can do that!

I used to Volunteer at Pinnacles National Park on the Search and Rescue team and what I found observing all types of photographers is the folks with Pro Line gear stayed around the parking lot and Mom's with kids and a entry level camera would hike into the High Peaks where th😢e Condors and amazing views are. Obviously the Mom that could watch her kids and carry a camera had the optimum opportunities and the parking lot folks enjoyed less opportunity and did not even enjoy an amazing hike.

Good message. It’s universal to any pursuit. I once had a commander who was very adamant about his troops getting out there and “playing in traffic,” meaning he wanted us to get outside of our comfort zones and do hard things. This was already part of my own personality, but it was probably the first time I had heard it codified. Playing in traffic is a good thing. If we stay in our own little cozy comfort zones, and we don’t try new techniques, new environments, new media, or braving adversity heaped on top of what we know, we are unlikely to grow. I recommend “playing in traffic” to anyone, in any endeavor. It may genuinely suck, but you’ll learn about yourself in ways you never will staying your comfort zone.

Yeah I'm a professional photographer in Australia and there are times in your photography career. You have to do the work. I don't do photography full-time professionally. I'm lucky that I have a day job that I really enjoy still and just where I live. It's a very small community and I cannot generate enough income out of photography to do it full-time. I did think about UA-cambut I decided that I didn't want to do it even though my technical knowledge and storytelling is a great aspect to what I do. I decided not to do it. It's great your channel. I shoot a lot of landscapes and a bit of real estate stuff. My main go-to lens is the Canon RF 14-35mm f/4 L IS USM-lighter than the 2.8 version, still gives me a great range of wide focal lengths, and the weather sealing’s a huge plus when I’m out braving the elements. Next on my wishlist: the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM. By the way, I only just found your channel today, checked out a couple of videos, and ended up subscribing. Good stuff, seriously.
