Flying Asymmetrical Spinnaker on a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 410
Переглядів 7493 місяці тому
I had the opportunity to crew on a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 410 during a brisk daysail on the Chesapeake Bay. We easily achieved 8 knots in a 12-15 knot breeze with full main and asymmetrical spinnaker, and at one point our speed peaked at 9.9 knots! Even in these conditions the steering was effortless and the boat did not seem overpowered at all. From what I can tell it’s a great design that is ea...

4 Days Single-Handed to Tangier, Reedville, and Solomons on my Beneteau 281 on the Chesapeake Bay

4 days and over 160 nautical miles. The trip begins in Herring Bay traveling south 60nm to discover Tangier Island, resting just above sea level and only accessible by boat or plane. With its rustic charm and stunning landscapes Tangier Island is one of those places you have to “see for yourself” before it’s gone as it slowly succumbs to rising sea levels. From there, it's a short sail across t...

How to Replace Yanmar Impeller

See how to replace an impeller on a Yanmar 2GM20F engine. It's been over 2 years since I bought my sailboat, and I've never inspected or changed the impeller so I thought it was time. Let's see how it goes!

You should make sure the impeller fins are all bent in the same direction as one another and going in the direction that the motor will be turning them. In this video the installed impeller had fins bent in opposite directions.
Thanks for flagging this 100% agree for anyone doing this. During the edit I also noticed this, and thought about going back and fixing it but figured the fins sorted themselves out once they got moving. They seem pretty flexible. Been a full season now and have not had any issues. Might open it up in the spring because I am curious to see.
how you like the boat?
I love this boat! It’s the perfect pocket cruiser. I did a lot of research before buying this boat. I wanted a walk through transom, standing head room, enclosed aft cabin, enclosed head, galley, v-birth. This boat has it all (although I wish the v-birth were enclosed it does make the interior feel spacious). It’s easy to single hand. The 4’ draft is great for poking around the Chesapeake. It’s fast for 28’ with the light displacement and fin keel it’s easy to maneuver and performs well upwind, even with old sails. Once the wind gets above 20 knots things can get squirrely, especially single handed, so I reef early and often, usually around 15 knots. I’ve tried to bury the rail several times and this boat always rounds up. I think the Oceanis series is very safe and seaworthy. I would like to do some blue water cruising in the future. This is probably not the boat for that, but like most boats it can probably handle a lot more than you think. Being under 30’ keeps the cost of ownership relatively low. The engine and other systems are easy to service so I save money there too. Some upgrades I'm considering are a mainsheet traveler for better trim upwind. Thinking about a dual mainsheet system I’ve seen on some newer production boats. Would also like to add an asymmetrical spinnaker for better downwind performance.
Be sure to replace the rad cap on the exchanger. There only good for 10 years. Mine went bad at 11pm coming back to states just as I'm entering key Biscayne. Bam, overheating engine in crazy winds with a reef on either side. 10 dollar cap was the problem. You know it won't go bad on a lovely June cruise to STM.
Thanks! Yeah mine was looking rusty on the top exterior so thought about replacing it based on aesthetics, but now will definitely replace it after this information.
@seachalet_281 it's the rubber seal under it that dries out, shrinks and cracks over time. Cheap to replace and keep the old one Just in case.
Thanks for doing this and I appreciate it's not easy to apply sealant evenly while holding a camera :)
Salt to vinegar ratio? Thanks
I wasn’t super scientific about it but I added approximately 1/2 cup of salt and filled the spray bottle with vinegar. Then shake till dissolved. Note, this killed my spray bottle after use.
Excellent Work! Great Crew!
Once we sailed from Crisfield to Parks Marina. We were fine in high tide but the next morning when departing we were in the mud.
THAT boom could actually kill you. Yikes.
Nice work, thank you for sharing.
I made this trip solo 2 years ago, starting out of Deltaville though. I am looking forward to it again soon… what is the draft on that 281? Last time I made this trip solo I was in my last boat with 4’3” draft, now on a new to me boat with 5” draft .. I was mostly worried about Tangier but it turned out to be ok, depth was just fine in and out of Tangier
I was worried about the depths too, my boat has 4’ draft. I entered from the west inlet that the big ferry takes and it was totally fine. The lowest depth I saw was maybe a 7? Mostly 8-9 ft though. Actually deeper than my home port I go in and out of all the time. If you look close you can monitor the depth sounder in the video while I’m in the channel. Hope you get to go back soon!
Helpful video. Could you tell me where to get a Yanmar maintenance kit that you held up at the beginning? Thanks!
I bought it from Niemiec Marine. If I remember correctly I had to call and ask for the “maintenance kit” it was about $200 but came with all the parts you saw in the video. marinedieselparts.com/store/sparepartskits.htm
Ive read alot of reviews that say they break and rip very easy
Thanks for the video! Changing the impeller on 281 soon
So easy to handle, including single-handing. Yet enough room for weekending with fair comfort and style for a couple or small family. And so gorgeous inside and out.
This is awful to watch. A plastic ice scraper on dry barnacles and dish soap and stainless scrubby on the prop.
Thanks for the candid feedback, 😂 maybe I’ll try that method next time!
Extra nice boat
Very strange thing. We rebedded a leg on our solar arch davit support 3 days ago and now this appears in my suggested videos. I did not search for anything to do with this job. That crack from the toe rail on the port side looks like it could use some attention too. Oh you did a video about that too!
Looks near perfect me my needs.👍👍
Pretty roomy for 28 feet. At a cost of losing the V berth, but who cares about that anyways.
Check out the Rust-Oleum bottom paint
I have the same boat. Question where did you get the new floor boards? Your right they are great boats.
Thanks for watching! I replaced the floorboards two years ago with new 3/4 inch teak and holly marine grade plywood. I used the old floorboards as a pattern, cut them out then sealed with West Systems 207 clear epoxy, and finished with a few coats of Epifanes dull varnish.
Nicely done, nice boat! Greetings from another Yanmar owner, I have posted a few videos on my 3GM30FC. Great engines.
everything in this video is wrong. Why put up a video of a hack job. Could have done the same just using adtech p14 alone.
I wish I had a dollar for every short term temporary repair that I have found on a boat. I did my training in 1981 in a temporary WW2 American hospital, due to be demolished in 1946. My last navy ship I was on was a 1943 emergency class destroyer, still being used in 1980.
Lucky you for getting such a nice second hand Beneteau
Going by the red can gives a great sense of your speed through the water. Where on the Chesapeake, and what's the boat?
Glad you liked it! Sailing out of Herring Bay, Beneteau Oceanis 281.
Beautiful boat!
We installed our new exhaust mixing elbow and it leaks. Do you need to put some sort of goop between the gasket and engine or elbow? Or perhaps just put a bit more oomph into tightening it (there's not a lot of room) Yanmar 3HM
do you have a bypass for your hot water heater ?
I removed my hot water heater because it had a leak so a permanent bypass for now.
@@seachalet_281 sweet Pink in a hot water heater turns water into seltzer for a season
well done i also vacume out my tanks also i see your useing west marine you can go to job lot or your local home depot and get your pink for 3 buck a gallon
Thanks for your video. We will be installing a new exhaust mixing elbow on our Yanmar 3HM and this was helpful to see you do it.
Glad it helped, good luck on your project!
@@seachalet_281 We installed our new exhaust mixing elbow and it leaks. Do you need to put some sort of goop between the gasket and engine or elbow?
@@SoItGoesCAL34 I didn’t use anything other than a new gasket and making sure to clean everything thoroughly so the gasket had a clean surfaces as a base.
@@seachalet_281 With a razor blade we removed probably the remains of the old gasket and other crud. And, it doesn't leak! Afraid to poke into the crud in the exaust hole in the block. Will have to investigate that later. Thanks so much for your help. It is so nice to be able to watch someone else do it first :)
I will be installing a new lifting pump this winter on my 3GM30F. Did any oil or fuel leak out when you removed the lifting pump?
I was worried about this too, my oil wasn’t at max, but in between full and empty. No oil at all, and just a tiny bit of fuel when I unscrewed the fittings in the fuel line. I also closed the valve on the main fuel line before I started.
Only thing that could have made that job any worse is a blindfold lol
Thanks for that. The 281 just made my short list. I am curious though. How long are the settee's in the main cabin. Being 6'1" I'm wondering if I could find a comfortable place to sleep.
Thanks for watching, it’s a great boat. Best place for you would probably be diagonally in the rear quarter-birth. Seats in cabin fit me comfortably but I’m 5’6”.
It’s a great boat. Im 6’2” and sleep great in the aft cabin. Ive also slept in the main cabin with no problem.
Thanks for posting, but perhaps you should perfect your technique before posting next time. Your filler was too high and you didn't feather bevel your cavity. Which as a retired dentist I can assure you was essential so that your surface coat blends in. Better luck next time.
Hahahah
Looks good. It shows through the sanded gelcoat because the filler was level with the existing gelcoat. That repaired area needs to be a mil or mil and a half lower than the normal surface surrounding the repair prior to gel coating.
I assume this means you sold your neptune?
Yes, very happy with my "new" Beneteau!
Its a very great boat i love it .
iv been on this boat xoxo
Great boat! Are you at HHN?
Yes! It's a beautiful marina.
Back years ago I ran street stock at a oval track. We call it a 20 paint job. From 20 feet it looked like new. Thanks getting ready to play on my boat.
How does it sail?
Considering the size and having shoal keel w/ daggerboard I thought the boat sailed really well, and fast for a 24 ft. boat. On good days I could hold 5.5 - 6 knots. With its light displacement it sailed well in light to moderate winds. With a wide range of sails (Asymmetric, 170, 130, 110 jibs) I could go big or small according to the conditions. I normally could set the sails and lock the tiller and she would steer to the wind. Usually needed a mainsail reef at 12-15 knots, tippy at first it will hold up to a blow with the right sail arrangement. A lot of weather helm with a lot of wind and sail. It didn't sail great upwind when it was blowing heavy (i.e. a lot of leeway), and pounded pretty bad in chop, but most small light boats will do that. If there were anything I could change it would be to go for the fin keel version, which would probably perform better upwind?
I just bought a Neptune 24. Looking to understand the centerboard lift mechanism, any tips? thanks for the great video!
Hi Jeff, apologies for the late reply, hopefully you are enjoying the boat! As for the centerboard lift... Mine had a fiberglass shaft that the centerboard slid up and down, with simple handle on the top, to push it up or down. A stainless quick release pin through the fiberglass shaft and centerboard post was used to lock it in place.
Great video. Helps me with ideas on restoring my Captiva 240. Keep it going
You still sailing that Neptune 24? Thinking of picking one up, and curious about your experiences with it. Thanks for the video!
I sold it a few years ago, great boat. I had the daggerboard model with older sails so it wasn't great upwind, but still very responsive, fun to sail, and stable in a blow. Mine had a lot of water damage when I got it. I replaced the front cabin floor, bulkhead, and compression post although still had issues with deck compression from the mast. Currently boat less, but hoping to get another soon! Here's a link to a blog if you want to check it out it covers some of the repairs/updates, some sailing adventures and rambling thoughts. friendofthesea.tumblr.com/
@@irwinkrieger Thanks! All very helpful.
Nice but Im looking for one in Britain so sorry but great yacht
I have a 79 neptune 24 and I have no idea why there is a square molded into the cockpit floor just outside the companionway. It looks like yours has some kind of hatch? Do you know what its used for?
Chuck Bosworth Not really sure, the hatch could be to access an inboard engine but not a lot of these have inboards if any at all, and mine didn’t have any signs of previous motor. I always found it a pain to clean around.
@@irwinkrieger OK, inboard motor access makes sense. You're right though, just a pain. Yours has a cover at least, mine just collects an inch of water
Hey great video! i was just wondering as to where you got your new windows. I recently got a 24' Neptune and would like very much to put windows like yours on mine. please window info would be very nice. Thanks.
Well it would have been better named 'Incomplete Inner View' instead of 'comprehensive overview'. I wanted to see how top worked, how front hatch was built, the v berth size and the rigging. Nice view of the drawers and compartments, though.
Cool, I enjoyed yer video
