Adventurer Knits aka Renee's Knitting Journey
Приєднався 26 бер 2024
Welcome! I'm Renee and I'm on a journey to learn how to knit. I'm having SO much fun learning to knit, starting to knit a sock and garments, learning about different protein and plant based fibers. I’m here in the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area.
Everything I knit in 2024 - as a new knitter!
Hello, Friends. Here we are at the end of the year. I love watching these year-end round-ups. Thanks SO much for being here. I adore this community.

I'm a new knitter! Come along with me as I discover the land of knitting - Knitting Podcast Ep. 1
I recently untangled a big mess of yarn, and I don’t have a cat! The alpaca is very difficult to untangle, but I do love how soft it feels.
Oooh that’s hard to untangle! Good for you!!
Love your raw and honest adventure with knitting 👏👏👏
Thank you so much!
Renee you’ve done a fabulous job for a first year knitter. I’ve been knitting for 5 years and just this year made my first garment (The Tolsta Tee) then another simple tee and I’m now making another Tolsta Tee. This was so fun to see everything you made in 2024. Can’t wait to see what you accomplish this year.
Wow, thanks so much for that feedback. I really appreciate it. Oooh, the Tolsta tee looks so pretty. It’s on my list!
Hi Happy New Year 🎉 With all the progress and items that you have knitted, you should invest in a set of circular needles. Take a look at knit picks for a good and inexpensive circular set. Also, try to find a recipe for your own sock and stick with that. I am amazed in all the items you have knitted in 2024. 😊 One word of advice please read the whole pattern before you start the project so if you get to a part of the pattern you don’t understand you can look it up and figure it out and gather all your tools ahead of time. Can’t wait to see what you do in 2025
Thanks, Carrie! I do have a set of Chiagoo circulars and the shorties and love love them!
I’m so impressed and inspired. As a new knitter, you have encouraged me to go for it🎉. Thanks for sharing all you works with the do’s and the maybe’s❤❤❤❤😊
I’m so happy about this! Yes, try. It’s just yarn, right?
So impressed with your early knits. I'm trying to perfect sock knitting and I must say it is a challenge! OMG! I love your emotional support chicken!!
Vicki, I must make another one. I really get it now. Oh the sock knitting, me too. Not perfection for me though. Just trying to get a tiny bit more refined with each one. It’s so fun, isn’t it?
I think the Stockholm Slipover looks great on you! It would look great with jeans for a more casual look.
Karen, thanks so much for the feedback. I appreciate it!
Congrats on learning to knit! But you look like a “winter” to me. Blue, and reds would look so much better on you especially with your hair color. Would stay away from browns and mustards.
Susan, thanks for watching! I do love reds and blues…and also mustard shades and certain shades of brown. I guess I love it all!
Have just found your channel and am starting from the beginning! I also started knitting again last year so can relate to your knitting quandary 😂 Will continue to watch all your episodes 😊
I’m so glad you’re here! Do you have any projects on the go?
I’m also doing a chunky cardigan from Ashley it’s going ok I need to pick up stitches for the button band which is abit daunting ! Haven’t got on the sock wagon yet but maybe this year ! I’m from Perth WA Australia it doesn’t get that cold here, so no urgency to learn 😊
the binder is so smart!!
That reminds me, I want to pick up another one for this year!
That Stare hat!!! Love it. May need to make it for our daughter.
Isnt is something! Fast and fun!!
I'm thinking,Renee, if you aren't too attached to your first scarf that you might want to repurpose the yarn to make something else that you'll actually wear. That's the cool thing about yarn, you can usually reuse it. That yarn will have a story to tell every time you see it!
PS I use a short circular needle as a cable needle. I've even used paper clips opened out into various shapes. I never had any luck with regular cable needles. You've really enjoyed learning new skills and I've enjoyed your enthusiasm!
I think you’re right! Thanks for the suggestion. I don’t seem to be attached to it. And I love the yarn!!
Congratulations on your success in your first year of knitting. Something you can try to soften rustic yarns is to wash with hair conditioner. 🎉
Thank you! Ah, thanks so much for the tip!
For a possible re-do for a vest you might want to see the vest pattern called Hello Friend by Leslie Friend, it recently came out, in late December 2024. Leslie has a similar esthetic as you seem to have (you are both lovely)and she has created a full tutorial with lots of hints. I’m swatching it as we speak!
Karen, thanks for the reminder of Leslie’s new pattern! I’m going to have a look again at it. She and I are both Pittsburgher too! Thanks so much for this suggestion. 🥰
How encouraging you are ! I am a very new knitter, and have attempted the Sophie scarf so many times my cat has loads of mini bonnets, haha, but the one on my needles is going to make it. Watching your Video gave me personal drive. Your items are wonderful
I love your UA-cam name! Ah, I’m so glad you’re trying again! Please come back and let me know how it’s going!
You have given me encouragement -I always enjoy what you are working on, the great yarns you pick - in the beginning I thought oh no, you would soldier on with errors in a piece - I tend to be the rip it all out again piece and find not getting things done because of it - you made me say to myself, this is a small error, keep going; !!! I thank you for your talent and enthusiasm - Happy 2025🎉
Oh Virginia. This warms my heart SO much! I’m noticing as I get more experience, I can more quickly and confidently fix more errors but I’m still making choices about that because my aim isn’t perfection. It just can’t be. I have a good example of this coming up!
I love that pink vest! Just seeing and hearing your reactions between that one and your first vest, I think you'll love it 1,000 times more if you remake the first pattern in that pink with a little waist decreases and a stretchy bind off :)
Rebecca, I felt the same way after mulling over it a bit. And if I still don’t like it, it can become something else!
You have made amazing progress in your first year of knitting!
Wow, thanks SO much for that feedback! 🥰
So many good projects!
Thanks! Happy New Year to you!
It’s amazing (and inspiring!) to see how much progress you’ve made in such a short time! I hope you don’t frog that beautiful cowl! Maybe now that winter is here, you’ll start wearing it? It’s such a lovely pattern, and combined with that yarn, just beautiful! Happy New Year, can’t wait to see what you make in 2025.
Jennie, thank you SO much for those kind words! A very Happy New Year to you too!
Love your persistence with sock making. It gets easier and more fun as you go. I went through the same process. I only do heal flap and gusset. Kitchener stitch is practice.❤️🇨🇦❤️
I’m so glad to know you’ve been down the same road! I just did another Kitchener on a sock last wk and it was the smoothest yet. Not perfect, but I was tickled! I’m so glad you’re here. Happiest of new years to you!
Loved hearing about your experience ❤
Thanks, Mari!
With all the rave reviews about your Sophie Scarf - which weight Magpie did you use? It does look great and has some definition. I think I remember that from your first yarn event in Pa? I have some cashmere and not sure if that alone, has enough weight to do the scarf.
Hi, Virginia. It’s Magpie’s Swanky Sock yarn which is 80% superwash merino, 10% cashmere, 10% nylon. It’s a nice fingering weight. It’s simply captivating!
I actually picked up this yarn when we were in Frederick this Summer and popped into Magpie Fibers. What a treat!
@ I thought of that after where it is in Maryland and you had done sheep festival
The vest fit and color is great!! You gotta redo the neck band tho!!… the point is the focal point!! You can do it👍
Caryl, that’s a good point. And the truth is, I probably won’t. The main reason being I’m finding I’m not wearing the vests as often as I thought….as I’m reviewing what I made this yr, I’m giving this more thought. That’s an upcoming video! Thanks for being here!
How do you find out about all these retreats? I don’t know how to get started.
Oh great question. I follow Gudrun Johnston on Instagram and that’s where she shared it. If you use any social media, you could follow vogue knitting on Instagram….theyre probably on Facebook? And subscribing to newsletters from vogue Knitting, the Grocery Girls etc. To find others, I think I googled knitting retreats and then the year you’re searching. I hope this helps!
The retreat sounded amazing! (--Bebe)
It really was. Gudrun is such a good, patient instructor. What a special person.
The retreat looked so fun! I love a good train ride 😊
Oh me too! Steam Into History was a client of mine when I was an ins broker in the area and oh they are such a special historic train nonprofit! Those Fall rides.
I have picked up Noro through the years and was so interested in all you learned ands different items you made - you had asked about other people and retreats - sorry I went into a whole story on my different get aways - but yours sounded fabulous and a wonderful experience, including the train ride and sunset!!! Getting teachers at that level is an experience within itself!!🎉
Oh don’t be sorry! I asked to hear about retreats! What did you think about the Noro you’ve used? They’ve really expanded their line now!
@ - I have enjoyed the Noro , that I have purchased , but usually it is with the idea to complete something in the magazine - a couple of them, I was able to do more than one project, which is always a plus!!
Oh nice!
Here we are Dec 26th - wow, time to relax and enjoy a couple of days before thinking about taking everything down. Loved this on the retreat - I do two retreats a year - March & Sept., quilting retreats , with my quilt guild, we go to a center right on the ocean, which is close by - this particular one is a bring your own projects and have fun and food with a like minded bunch of woman. I have through the years been on big retreats like Houston in the Fall and Kentucky - which I signed up for classes and it’s never fails that you learn something new, from the teacher or some of the other students. It enriches your craft, no matter what it is - I have also done knitting retreats - yearly, SC has a retreat with members of the SC knit guild., - they have classes and I have learned new techniques. My local store closed sadly and I have gotten away from that retreat. It also comes down to (if you have a husband) how many trips on your own you choose to take, - the quilting is just Sun- Wed and more local for me so, it has been easier and always fun. But I am getting back into the knitting (it is so portable )and you have been an inspiration going from thing to thing, I have seen your growth with what you are doing - it has been so much fun to watch!!!😊
Virginia, today is a nice relaxing day, isn’t it? I loved hearing about YOUR retreats here. Thank you! And thank you for the feedback. I appreciate it. Quilting produces such beautiful things. Having lived near Amish country for quite awhile, I’ve gained a real appreciation. Happy New Year!
I’m about to start my knitting journey so it’s nice to find someone who hasn’t been knitting long but is already making complicated projects (watched your last retreat video first lol).
Oh yaaaay! Oh you’ll definitely see my progression if you start at the beginning. Please stay in touch and ask questions! I’m on Instagram under the same name too.
@ found you on IG!
Love your retreat report -
Thanks!!
Hi Great podcast You know that you can do a 3-needle bind off. The Kitchener is a killer Thanks
I’m going to look that up! Thanks!
Happy holidays
Thank you! Happy Holidays to you too, Jacqueline. 🥰
Have a merry Christmas trip to Santa Fe. I can’t wait to hear about your knitting experience . I think it’s just great. But please I was stressing out as you were picking up your balls that were all catted !!pick up some project bags while you’re out there😂
Virginia, crazy huh? I have 3 project bags…and I don’t use them at home! I’ve now begun putting my projects on a shelf. And once I start any kind of colorwork, that’s when I’ll have to use a bag when working on a project in the living room. Again, I’m crazy! I can’t wait to report back from Santa Fe. Thanks for being here!
@ it was funny when you were when I was reading your reply about yourself and I remembered you mention it when I watched the podcast and I was thinking about my last cat who was 19 and I miss very much, but it was a Siamese and a shelf up on the wall, would’ve been nothing for him especially if there was something he wanted up there so you will have to let us know if that works-cats are pretty smart😉
Have fun in Santa Fe! Can’t wait to hear about it when you return with new skills.
Thanks so much!
Your cardigan is so nice!
Ah thanks so much!
Looking forward to hearing about the retreat!
Thanks! I can’t wait to share it!
The hat turned out great!
Ah, thanks! It’s a bit rough around the edges, but I’m happy with it! Shipped off to my son this morning
That Trader Joe’s sunscreen is my favorite too. Goes on so easy doesn’t pill under other skincare like some do. I’m always afraid they’ll discontinue it. I agree it is a dupe for Supergoop Unseen sunscreen but I do feel like they may have changed the formula a bit, seems a little thinner and has less of a silicone feel than it had before. But maybe I’m imaging things! In any case, it’s still a great sunscreen! Love your podcast and your vlogmas eps!❤
Yay! Ah thank you so much for that feedback. I’m so glad you’re here. 🥰
I’m loving your videos - I’ve gone back to watch from Ep 1. I just love watching your knitting journey - you’ve improved so much in such a short time 😊 Also thanks for watching our podcast (I’m Bebe from Just Another Knitting Podcast)
Bebe! Oh how wonderful. Thank you for being here! I love that feedback. If it were t for you and your husband attending Shetland week, I wouldn’t know as much as I do about that amazing event. Happy December!
You are smart to not hang onto what you don’t like and wont use - I did that and brought a bunch to my friends yarn group -I tend to buy more expensive (yarn store) so, really wanted to give it to a more advanced group that will enjoy.
Virginia, that’s a great idea! I dropped mine off at a free yarn box that one of my local yarn stores has outside. Like a Little Free Library!
Drops yarns at Wool Warehouse.
Thanks!
It's such a great feeling when someone you love loves your knits! You can knit and donate knitted knockers with the Coboo. It's on the list of allowed yarns. Enjoying your enthusiasm as always!
Me again.... maybe you bought the black yarn to use in something striped? Yes to the magenta, gold and blue for your striped hat. Leave out the green... although you never know.. sometimes things end up looking so cool with wild card colors included! Have fun and be sure to show us your progress. And I would love to see more of your kitty. Mine like yarn too so I can't leave it lying around. What's your kitty's name again?
It is a great feeling! Thanks for the heads up!
The knitting retreat sounds like it’s going to be fun!
I’m so excited. I can hardly believe I’m going!
The Ranunculus is so do-able! Go for it!
I’m SO glad to have the encouragement!!
Lovely video. Your joy for the craft is fantastic!
Thanks so much, Jane!
You could absolutely reknit the collar on your Flax - just keep in mind that you’ll be knitting in the opposite direction from before. I like the other comment/suggestion to pick up the stockinette stitches. Looking forward to seeing how these projects turn out!
Thanks so much for the feedback. I’m glad you’re here!
I used to watch the Creabea until she made such rude remarks about our new president after the election. I know it is her podcast and she can say what she wants, but I don’t appreciate that on a knitting podcast. There are many other podcasts that I find even more entertaining.
There is certainly no shortage of knitting podcasts, that’s for sure!
I love to see you improve so much during your knitting journey! Kudos to you for overcoming the challenges and finding what works for you 🥰
Ah, thanks so much. I remember watching your first video and being so inspired that you were such a new knitter and sharing your challenges and successes!
Always so fun to see your excitement and how you approach your projects. Love it. Oh button bands! I imagine that, whenever a pattern says that I have to pick up stitches for a button band that I make the same kind of face as a toddler being convinced to eat something they don't like. It's so bad now that I will avoid those types of patterns if I can in favor of those that work the band at the same time as the rest of the garment (that is not often, sadly) or try to work out how to do it myself and adjust the pattern. For your neckband ribbing: you can put in needles below the band (2 rows at least) and cut off the band, going back and knitting upwards; however you are now knitting in the opposite direction, so the stitches will be misaligned a tad. Alternatively, if you are worried about stretch in the current one, you could try a crochet chain along the inside or thread some elastic through near the bottom of the band. Lastly, you could cast on another collar ribbing and then graft it to where you cut off the original band (this all assuming there are no short rows that are disrupted). Thanks for sharing your time with us!
Oh I’m not alone! Yay! I did hear about the integrated button band. Wow! Thanks so much for the tips! I really appreciate it
