Gravity Circuit Review and Critique

If you enjoy Mega Man, particular Mega Man X, or 2D action platformers in general, definitely check out the indie game Gravity Circuit. It released in 2023 and seems to have largely flown under the radar despite being exceptional at almost everything it does. Definitely an overlooked game and a hidden gem. This is a review, but I also offer some (minor) critiques of the game's difficulty.

A Complete Critique of Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Banishers had so much potential - a supernatural detective story set in a unique 1600s America. However, the developers Don't Nod Entertainment, falls short in the actual execution of the game. Instead of building on the strengths of their previous title, Vampyr, the game borrows heavily from God of War (2018) and The Witcher 3, without grasping the core elements that made them successful. Has Ratchet and Clank Lost its Identity?
who is even you lil bro
I don’t agree with your critique on the empress sending him away. We literally hear at the start she’s the only person she trusts to speak with the other leaders. Furthermore the reason he’s not the spymaster is because the empress wanted him close as possible
I would argue that if Corvo is the only person she trusts in her circle, than it's very stupid to send him away to the other isles and leave herself surrounded by people she doesn't trust. Corvo's job is Royal Protector, his job is to protect, which he can't do if he's physically away from her.
@ It’s sort of a lose lose I guess. But you’re right I don’t understand why he was ever sent away in the first place it doesn’t make much sense.
your review is just terrible mid combat the cap on the health bar is really annoying I think you just don't know how to play the game.
did you just compare to twilight? omg thats way too dumb
its not vampeur its vampyr
The thing with chaos is you only need to keep I think 80% of the enemy's you encounter alive so you can do a mixed playthrough including killing all targets
I think this game deserves a remake instead, theres so many good concepts that didnt land very well and a proper remake would be really good

The games specifically call the 2 states high chaos or low chaos.. not good or bad.. ur putting the good n bad label on it, the games never do that lol
@@SayMy_User_Name As I point out in the video, the states could be called A and B but it's still clearly good and bad.
I don’t necessarily see it that way..because u can kill all the targets and no one else, and still be in low chaos.. so killing or not killing isn’t strictly separated in to low or high chaos ..it’s more so whether or not ur slaughtering everyone u come across or being merciful to some while killing a few others
@@SayMy_User_Name not to mention in more cases than not killing them is the more merciful option, you hand the Pendletons over to Slackjaw to become slaves, you brand Campbell face which leads to him being ostracized and catching the plague, you give lady boil to an obsessed man for him to do god know what. Hell Daud and the lord regent are the only people not worse off by the “passive option” because you expose the lord regents confession and he commits “political unalive” and Daud gets spared. To me when you take into account the after math of these choices its clear that they are definitely not the “good” options.
@@kaldini yeah I definitely disagree man, with how the story plays out almost every antagonist ends up worse than if you just finished them off and you're able to see the consequences of your actions on both sides.

I kinda feel like blink just makes the whole game too easy? I mean I never had any trouble with the game even as a stupid child. Like i feel like Dishonored is just an easy game to go through as is and blink pretty mich trivializes its difficulty. The fact that you can beat the entire game without any ppwers at all makes the fact that you get a dirt cheap teleportation power on top of that just intrinsically makes all the levels just trivial to do? My point is I feel like challenge and difficulty in dishonored aren't really as much of a concern as freedom and creativity.
Well you just said you can beat the entire game without powers so just like with the freedom they put the level of challenge you'll face in your hands. If you felt like blink trivialized the game its a good thing you dont have to use it. Of course this is ignoring the numerous areas and paths that would require you to use blink to access them, either leading you to bone charms, runes, safes, or alternative routes. Point being if you felt like it trivalized the game then you just didnt engage with the mechanic enough or werent capible of prociving the use cases they provided. Also as for the dificulty there is a reason they have multipul options.
I say Vampyr is a "Souls-like" game with a much easier, in depth story. But you actually get to keep your experience when you die, which is always a plus 🤙🤙🤙
I think to criticise the story harshly is a disservice to Asobo Studios, who are a team of just 40 people with a small budget who made 2 of the most memorable games ever. I have never felt such emotions from playing a video game. You put it well when you said it's a character driven story rather than a plot driven one. Most games have ludicrous plot devices to push the game along in a certain way, which is forgiven for the sake of gameplay. The first game got me, but the second one really left a hole. I'm heartbroken over that ending and days later still can't quite come to terms with it. The first part of Requiem I wasn't really feeling it, but upon completion I now miss the parts which I first thought were lame, because I understand how it was setting me up to feel emotional bonds between the siblings. And I will really miss the feeling of medieval France and all the simplicities of life in such a beautiful setting during one of the worst times in history. I was completely immersed and feel a deep sense of loss now, as it feels like the end of something that will never be done as well again.
I played this game on my XBOX console (through XBOX Game Pass) and unlocked all its achievements. This game is rough, but something is genuinely precious at its core. If it had a better budget, more development time, and more refined and polished gameplay mechanics, this game would have kicked ass. This game had so much going for it, but so much of it felt tedious. I played through it multiple times, and the problems that you mentioned in this video really exposed themselves. A properly implemented New Game Plus mode would have made this game much more fun for numerous playthroughs and easier to manage. They didn’t even include it in an update.
Very good points
This is the best review of the game I've seen, and it pretty much echoes my own thoughts. The story and graphics are very good, while the gameplay leaves a lot of room for improvement. I enjoyed the varied mix of characters, with their realistic personalities and morals (I would say complex, but they aren't all complex, and that's a good thing). The story is not afraid to dive into hard topics and does so with the proper tone. I liked the controls. They took some time to get used to, but they allow for high skill expression. While the quests and bosses are ok on their own, the gameplay gets repetitive rather quickly. I found myself playing very safe at times, especially when a lot of enemies were around. Other times I just YOLO'd into birds. The latter were more fun but were counterbalanced by the number of tries they took. The crab is the second worst boss by far, extremely repetitive. The actual worst boss is the last one, I expected way more given how the story hyped up Heaven. The OST is perfect. I would still recommend the game for the story and for the innovative controls (you either love them or hate them). I hope the devs don't abandon the concept and instead refine the bad aspects of Laika.
@@akkesm Appreciate you watching and commenting! The studio has another game titled Grotto that I think is similar to Laika in that it does something interesting and new within its genre (for Grotto this is choice based walking sims). However similarly it doesn't quite stick the landing all together and its innovations become tedious after awhile. Might be worth checking out if you enjoyed the story and characters of Laika.
@@kaldini Thank you for the recommendation. It looks interesting, I'll check it out.
@@akkesm of course. At some point I hope to have a short video about the game on my channel
I suspect that one of the reasons you have enjoyed Saga's section more is that it feels like a more traditionally complete story. For the Remedy lore fans, however, Alan's sections may be more appealing due to the overarching narratives. After all, it does appear as if Alan in some sense is creating the narrative about Saga. As such, Saga becomes _just_ another character in his plot, while his own story is central. It's also the case that as a second installment, AW2 is mapped onto the "initiation" phase of the Hero's Journey that Remedy so fancy, with AW1 being the "departure" phase. It then stands to reason that Alan's sections being titled "Initiation" feel like they are more relevant to the story of this second game, while Sag's "Return" plot is _merely_ a subplot. The causal links in the world of Remedy are not exactly straightforward, so the hierarchies of the main plot and subplot are not entirely strict, but I feel like the perception of such a hierarchy is still there.
Great explanation. I'm excited to see what the Lake House DLC brings as well as Control 2. Remedy are fantastic developers and really one of the few studios making these kinds of games. A year later I still find myself thinking or reminiscing about Alan Wake 2.
@@kaldini They absolutely are. It always feels like they're putting effort into their games, and most problems with the games come across as genuine mistakes rather than anti-consumer practices. I do, however, agree with some of your criticism, especially regarding how significant portions of the story should not be locked behind expansions, DLCs, or New Game+. I also tend to prefer self-contained stories.
I watched both your videos on the Dishonored series right after replaying both base game and the DLCs. I can't currently repay the second part or finish death of the outsider because my current PC can't load even the main menu I'm looking forward to the continuation of your series on Dishonored. I can't tell if void gaze was better in the original Dishonored, but the outside of the manner is the worst it gets because of the bright lights. I am also curious to hear your thoughts on the non-narrative DLC "Dunwall City Trials". It has a very memorable achievement "by my hand alone" that requires a mastery of combat. Daud's blink also has fun use cases in combat. I don't remember if it works here or only in Dishonored 2, but you could catch an enemy's bullet if you timed the blink well. I agree that the chaos system is strange. I would expect non-lethal target eliminations to increase the chaos because they are sadistic and easily fit "fate worse than death" in every series entry I remember hating the change of the Outsider between the first and the second entry, so I'm expecting you to say what you think about that. They changed the voice actor and butchered the character - the outsider used to be barely interested and was the most reactive character to the chaos level, most levels had a shrine of him and you could trigger them at different points of the mission. Dishonored 2 showed him constantly blinking around like he got this power for the first time, being emotionally involved in every dialog and too lively I totally agree that Billie is barely a character in the expansion. It would work better if Delilah possessed her to harm Daud, that would make more sense than her showing herself and would be another piece of foreshadowing. There's lots of great promises and missed marks in Dishonored series. Open every gate with prisoner - check. Interactions and reactivity - no check
Just saying I appreciate the work you put into these videos bro, good on you

52:40 the moment when Jonathan asks Elizabeth "Am I repellant unto heaven" and she basically responds with "eh don't worry about it" was a super dumb moment. What the fuck do you mean don't worry about it? I'd be panicking like never before if I were him
I actually feel the 2 Daud DLC's were so boring in comparison to the Main Game. The DLC's don't really expand upon the Dishonored story very well, other than adding witches and a few new powers, there's barely any point in playing these DLC's repeatedly. Dishonored 2 is basically the same as Daud's DLC's, the only key difference is that Dishonored 2 is much more fleshed out and actually has great replayabilty and new game +. In my opinion, if you want the expert through someone other than Corvo's eyes, get Dishonored Definitive edition as the Daud DLC's are included there for free.
“Dishonored is a game with themes about how power corrupts. What? The point of overpowered kill based powers being bad is about power corrupting? Erm, is that a joke?”
@@ellisleft4dead249 as far as stealth games go, the stealth in this game is easy. But as far as games go, stealth as a mechanic is hard. If you get seen once, it’s game over. Just to point out Vampyr or Vampyre is pronounced exactly the same as VAMPIRE. It's just spelled differently. Vampyre or Vampyr first appeared in 18th-century poetry, before becoming one of the stock figures of gothic fiction with the publication of Polidori's The Vampyre in 1819, which was inspired by Lord Byron. The word use of VAMPIRE wasn't used until 1847 but has been a more popular spelling of the word due to how popular certain literature was written about it in it's use of the word such as Bram Stroker's DRACULA. But all in all the word VAMPYRE / VAMPYR are all pronounced the same as VAMPIRE.

I think Nurse Crane turned into a vampire not because of Jonathan mesmerizing her with a lower charm level, but because Crane's clinic was filled with patients suffering from the spanish flu, like Razvan ( i dont remember his name ) that we failed to save, that presented some signs that he was turning into a skal before dying ( surely that he dying during his transformation while becoming a vampire ). And we see that spanish flu and vampirism is correlated later in the game. So i think it makes sense that she transforms, what doesnt is that she stays a human if we choose not to embrace nor charm her. Maybe the fact she is mind breaked if we mesmerize her made her totally lose consciousness and didnt pay attention whether she should protect herself from sick patients.
I like most parts of the game, except some of the basic moves. Upward attack is also lifting Kai up, and because of that, I end up taking damage while fighting against flying enemies. And I also don't really like downward attack, even though it's quite good to use against enemies, I always had trouble using it during boss fights. It almost seems like hitbox of its attack is so small that if boss moves somewhere, I can take contact damage. I also tried to beat the game on hard mode without any upgrades at all, and it was moderately difficult, although not really hard because enemy throwing mechanic is really good for these types of runs. Final boss took me two hours, though (that might be skill issue).
