RADL GRVL RCE VLG ... Gravel racing down under!
Thanks Maddy. Very helpful. I'm a gravel cyclist and I totally agree that the strength requirements of gravel riding up steep pitches really benefits from extra strength training. Also just strengthening the upper body and triceps specifically helps with the pounding on the bumpy downhills to reduce upper body fatigue on long gravel rides.
super gedaan
A video on core workout would be great!
Congratulations!
How do you incorporate stretching and mobility into your day to day? I’m soooo bad about stretching haha
@@josierosie3785 I never stretch 😅
Great part 1 video & q&a. Just wondering I know as you mentioned that post injury you need to follow your physios advice but for legs rather than the barbell exercises you've re recommended what are your favourite machine based alternatives. Thanks
If I am honest, I don't tend to ever recommend machine weights. The only one I would tend to use / prescribe would be the leg press.
very informative! thank you maddy! ☺
V interesting, thank you !
How do you measure progress? I'm guessing there are some objective measures like how much you can lift and how often, biometrics like heart rate and respiration, that sort of thing - but what are the on-bike indicators that you are improving?
I have noticed my power numbers on the bike increasing after a solid gym block. Easy to test by doing things like a 20 min test. I know a lot of friends who have said their max power increased too.
This is a banger 👏
Tom pretty much describing my journey into strength training as a 65 year old. My own research basically said that at 65 my muscles would naturally be wasting so I needed to strength train as well as bike BUT I would need to fuel with a lot more protein in my diet as well. Ive added strength to my yoga and core session - and a lot of fat free nigh protein yoghurt and the cheapest most sugar free. protein bars I could find and the difference has been massive.
Really useful… and..no wonder you’re so strong on the bike, split squats are a killer and it’s good to see a coach who walks the walk..those quads of Tom’s - I’m in awe. Only need to 4x the weight I’m currently using..!!
ahahah he does have great legs. Always good when your coach has great legs
Thanks Maddy and Tom, this was very insightful! I also really like the relaxed format. Although I did feel a bit sorry for Tom as he hardly had time to devour that breakfast 😂.
hahahha so did I.
Mmmm.... French toast.
Outstanding video with excellent info. Subscribe!
Thank you!!
Happy New Year, Maddy! ☺
HNY!!
Is it ok to do a strength workout immediately after a bike workout if that is all your time per week will allow? I understand it is not optimal, but doing something is always better than doing nothing, right?
You kind of answered your own question there, but yeah as you say - It's better than doing nothing, but sure not optimal. You may want to have a play around with the order of them if they are directly back to back - As for me, and most, if you were to do strength directly after a bike session the strength training would be compromised. Yet doing them the other way round (strength first) would not compromise the bike session, and instead would potentially help you by "priming" or "potentiating" you a little.
@@theedgecoaching1949 Thanks for the reply. A few years ago, you replied to me in the comments of one of your own videos and said that you like to follow this daily schedule for your cycling/lifting: strength on day 1, next day intervals, next day zone 2, next day strength, next intervals again, and final day zone 2, followed by a day off. Or something like that. Do you still advise a schedule like that?
Your last video inspired me to do leg day workout. I had to take elevator to go up 1 floor at the office today. 😂😂
hahahahhaha I know that feeling
Love the drawings on the wall behind. 😋 Great video, very informative.

Love the new outro! Also really informative video in general.
Cheers! Ahaha it might be a temporary out-tro whilst I don't have sponsor correct footage!
Great info!
Blimey, that is a pile of toast and Almond butter!! Not wonder you have to do strength training
This series is so interesting. Thank you. Also want your breakfast please 😂
Excellent mini series on strength Maddy and Tom. Please don't leave the viewers in suspense any longer. Once Tom's 'Tower of Toast' appeared on screen. I for one shouted out 'what is it? I want it'. I feel the creation of this breakfast deserves a video short of its own👩🍳

Excellent series - Tom explains everything SO clearly. His approach seems like a joy to follow as a Pro. Wishing You a Healthy, Safe & Happy 2025😎
Box squats are designed to build acceleration. The point is to sit on the box, completely relax, then explode up. You also need to use bands or chains. Watch videos of Louie Simmons and Westside Barbell to learn how to properly do box squats.
Yes, these are not so much box squats but just above parrallel squats this way
Agreed, I’m calling them box squats but they aren’t conventional box squats at all. I’m mearly using the box as a reference point at which to start driving up.
Thanks for the recipe and I’ve made a batch and they are delicious but are very sticky.
Thanks Maddy, technique reminders are always useful
Courtney you make your country proud
Are you going to Unbound Gravel?
Yes :)
Another straight male here, Coach Tom looks the part as well as talks the talk. I hope you benefit from his guidance in the gym and I look forward to seeing how you perform in your races in 2025. Best wishes to you both and Bailey.

Happy New Year and best wishes to both of you on the Engagement🥳🫶🫠
Excellent decision to step away from social media for a while, but also great to see you’re back! Coach Tom seems awesome, he explains very clearly. Best of luck for the new season, and enjoy your engagement! 🎉
Thank you!!
Couple of points: Knees over toes on Bulgarians doesn't lead to the instability and it's fine if the knee does track beyond. Your coach is extending his hips too much at the top of the RDLs. There's no benefit to pushing your hips forward as much as he does at the top of the movement. Otherwise this video is a good resource to show simple exercises for people to include in their S&C
Thanks, Point 1 - I agree, Knees Ove Toes is for sure fine, though I do find when I coach this "cue" like I do here, people find it easier to get right, and don't end up putting all the weight through the front of the foot / leg. Point 2 - I also agree, when doing a conventional RDL or deadlift it's a bad habit of mine to extent a little too much at the top, though I tend to stop doing this with heavier loads - I don't coach it this way though. As I am sure you can appreciate it's hard to get the key points across with a short explanation to suit a very wide audience.
@@wayne5741 Thanks - You will note that although we did call this a box squat, it's not what I would actually class as a conventional box squat, as it does go to around parallel. Again, hard to get this right for a wide audience, but I find having the bench just as a reference point (whatever that height may be) to check yourself at the bottom of the lift is good for most, to essentially prevent each rep from getting progressively higher over time with fatigue. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely see the benefit from including a full ROM squat into the programming also.
Lovely and looks like great use of your time building strength to help you through your race season. You are inspiring me to do some strength training now.
Honestly it is so worth doing! I feel SO much better on a bike when I have done a good amount of gym!
Félicitations Courtney & Maddy! Also looking forward to another custom paint job!
Thank you!!
I hope Lauf are OK with some sibling paint pen action 🙏
Holaaaa Maddy.. Feliz año !!

Would you consider racing in the upcoming Grand Tour event on TrainingPeaks Virtual?! March 24-30 and it would be awesome to have you come and race it! Should have a really great turnout and would make for some exciting content
@@PedalToProgress I’m not really into racing indoors! Find it super tough!
@ no worries! If you reconsider your stance, give TrainingPeaks Virtual a try! The experience is much much different than Zwift racing (of which I’m not a fan). TPV is much more realistic and more dynamic than pure “watt-fests”
