What do wrasse taste like?
@RichardJackRobertson they're just a typical average tasting white fleshed salt water fish. I personally think they actually taste slightly better than blue cod. Fairly similar to terakihi . But Not as good as butterfish or trevally. So yeah just another average tasting fish. Ppl don't eat them because they're annoying to fillet with all the chubky scales.
@@KiwiKaimoana Thanks Jamie. The scales are like chain mail
Was there the at time. The fishing is terrible there now. Went to havlock an even worse
Great video, looking forward to part 2 . I also hit plenty of rocks. Great seeing you team up with another diver, Alfie.🤿
@southern.adventures thanks for having a look... I've been watching your recent bluff diving videos too.
Hey Jamie I found with my float boat I cut my float line into three pieces and added shark clips to each end so I can shorten or lengthen the line depending on the depth and amount of kelp. It saves trying to tie up the excess and if it comes un done. And yes my Wettie float boat tips over in the waves. Lost some good paua in the last Kaikoura open season last year because of that. Still there were plenty to choose from.
😂 at the ending. Awesome vid guys. Choice one 🤙🏾 Scrunga too. Good looking boat!
@@cheekypukeko yeah it's an awesome boat... I love that Scrunga too
Hi Jamie I moved from Hamilton to Christchurch 5mths ago and have been watching yours, tasmins, and primal instincts vids just wandering if there is much kina around I noticed you guys just do paua and fish I'm not a paua guy but like kina and abit of kahawai but love the content bro wandering if you're doing any dives this year it is now 10/1/ 2025 and I just got back from holiday up north island thanks mate
round Christchurch there isn't much kina. It's hard to find. Not like in the north island where it's more abundant. We would take more kina if it was here, but round banks peninsula... you might see a few on the north of the peninsula but they are tiny and have no roe. South side of the peninsula, there's not many of them. Dives are weather dependent and this summer has been terrible, the worst in years. This summer it's non stop southerly wind, or rain, both of which make the ocean water undiveable. The problem is mostly deforestation of the canterbury plains... allowing dirty water to enter the rivers when it rains, which muddies up the ocean water round the peninsula (rain), and if a strong wind comes in, it stirrs up the water and the silt on the seabeds from the last 100 years of silt settling on the seabeds (wind). Chch is one of the the worst locations in the country to go diving and you get about 4 months of it in (summertime) if you're lucky. This summer we are unlucky with this bad weather and it's gonna be way less than 4 months. My advice, join the South Island Spearfishing & Freediving Club (you can google it). There is a facebook group and a website. It's the best way to meet local divers and start networking. Diving here is also pretty much boat only. There is no decent shore diving. Not like you would expect to see in Bluff or Wellington for example. Most of the coastline of banks peninsula is eroded cliff faces and it's not accessible by road. Local divers buy a boat, and launch from Wainui boat ramp in Akaroa harbour.... then commute the boat down to the southern bays of the peninsula. The Primal Dive instinct guy has a few videos shore diving at Taylor's mistake which is a local beach. But the diving is aweful there. Small fish (and not many fish), small kinas, small crays (often it's no crays), small pauas (you're lucky to find a legal one). The only species that does well at Taylors is blackshell mussels. There is another channel called "Time with Tangaroa" which is a local guy Brian who does shore dives there.... watch some of his vids, you'll see how bad the diving there is. The whole north side of the peninsula suffers the same issues, species grow small and often don't get to legal size, and filthy water 365 days a year. You can end up putting a lot of effort and time and petrol into going somewhere and ending up with empty hands. Ie- diving lyttelton or driving all the way to port levy, pigeon bay, okains bay, little Akaloa. If you do go and dive Taylors Mistake (shore dive), for the sake of safety... dive the south side(near Harris bay), the north side has a strong rip current which can pull you out quick. Be prepared to swim about 500m along the rocks and back again. Or try hiking over the hill to harris bay. But I caution you Harris bay isn't gonna be any better than Taylors Mistake. The whole cost there is much the same. And yeah if you want to do more research on that beach... watch some Time with Tangaroa videos.
@KiwiKaimoana hey Jamie thanks for your knowledge and tips of the area very much appreciated, yeah its not good going somewhere put alot of effort in and come up empty handed again much appreciated Jamie love your content bro
Nice catch and haul there Jamie. Good to know you got that salmon farm as a bit of a back up when the diving and visibility is no good. Look forward to the co-lab the viz looks good in your preview.
Yeah that salmon farm is generally plan C. Goes like this... Plan A: Get out of the harbour into the clearer water, go spearfishing. If that doesn't work... Plan B: Stay in the harbour in the dirty water and dive for pauas, and if still too dirty or too rough... Plan C: Go to salmon farm and fish for Kahawai. When you see a video like this... you're not seeing plan A. It's plan C.
So... I want to go on the boat with you.... I don't have a specific date or time... you don't mind if I show up on my own schedule... you will provide me 🍻 and pay all the cost...sounds great 😂 you probably tie them to the anchor and tell them to launch ut for there own saftey
Well I assume you're joking about all that. If you look at the other comments from ppl that have replied, it's positive feedback from ppl who identify as boat owners.
Having a hard time finding one of these belts to buy.... like the Morray one have soft weights so it's simple
The moray "super stretch" belt seems to have been discontinued by ocean hunter. Dunno why. Shame coz it's one of the better weight belts.
I like it. hoping for more videos like this. Thank you
Thanks. Chris and I had a trip out last year just like this video... we got 6 kahawai... it was called "we break our record on fish" something like that. If you want to see a vid similar to this...go back and check out that one.
@@KiwiKaimoana Yeah thanks for your information <3
Can't beat the old humble kahawai. Raw, smoked, fried in butter. Bloody beauty!!! Looking forward to the next vid with Alfies outdoors. Cheers 🤙🏾
Yeah only downside is I caught a cold sleeping in the tent at the campground in Blenheim. Was a great experience though.
Canterbury diving is dodgy at best. The wind is almost always there by 11 am - good kahawai haul thanks to guest Wayne. Its a good woman who prepares the fish.
@RichardJackRobertson yeah my wife is pretty awesome at helping with fish prep when I get home. She knows fishing is an all day comittment
Nice video. Sometimes it just takes a bit of time.
@tumon1000 yeah I reckon it was just a case on that day of waiting for the fish to get hungry. The kahawai are often swimming past the salmon farm at various intervals
Good work 👍
Thanks for watching
Love the video, every new person that go on another’s boat should watch your video
yeah Adreno spearfishinbg did a similar video called boating etiquette. But I thought it missed a few things so I made this one. I hope it gets used as a training tool where boat owners will get new divers to watch this video and learn a few things.
Got bloody two children a wife and three boats at home and I get to go out once or twice a month on someone else’s boat, guess I am managing it pretty well 😂😂😂
What’s a double banger?
It means 2 dives on one day. In w different locations. The club doesn't do this event anymore. Diving too unproductive in the first location... Lyttelton.
Hey man do you know any shore spots akaroa with legal size
@TaneHarrison If you're talking about paua... none exist. If you mean crayfish... you'll probably not find any crayfish shorediving Akaroa. They tend to live out near the heads...not in the inner Harbour. If you want to shoredive in Akaroa... take mussels... and focus on finding fish to shoot... wrasse and butterfish.
Agree totally though I also enjoy taking newbies out, but usually there is some reciprocity for instance a family who helped enable my disabled son to go on a school program I took them out for a trip on my larger boat tailored for their interests, others who were farmers who granted me hunting access similar.
I think that I'm going to make it a mandatory requirement that any ride-alongs watch this 'training' video before jumping on my boat in the future. :)
@sambob6428 yeah Adreno have done a vid similar to this one on their channel. I've asked my dive buddies in the past to watch their video. Thanks for checking out mine... I hope it was good enough and I covered enough relevant issues.
For NZ spearfish start with 90-100cm. Will cover most table fish and kingie if close enough. For kingies and northern diving in cleaner water 120cm are the goto. Twin rubber is good place to start and its simple process to switch to single later. When comes to brands can't go wrong with Rob Allen. Aluminium body they are tough which is must in boat full of stumbling divers and falling weight belts. Most importantly sink and will stay on bottom while berley snapper or to mark cray hole. NB rubber on bungie only provide elasticity, cord running through it takes load. Cord won't break because rubber is stuffed. Rubber can be replaced, simple process and cheaper than buying complete new bungie.
Joys of new boats. The 30hp mercury/ rebadge tohatsu are always a prick to start. Cold or warm if sitting >1/2hr. My trick prime turn over 2-3 times with choke out and lanyard disconnected. Prime reconnect lanyard and put choke in before pulling again, should start within3 pulls. Two motors over 30yrs (1995 merc & 2012 Tohatsu) and talking to couple other owners and this normal. On plus side neither motor has very let me down. Every other japan motor I've used started 1-2 pulls when warm ie >1hr. If you are running factory 13" prop try 11" for better hole shot and rough water performance. I alternate between two depending on application. NB the 2012 model is lot more refined and quieter than 1995.
@montyspearo yeah I heard about that trick. I actually now have can electric start kit fitted. Makes life a lot easier starting that mercury.
Arrange to do dive with friend of friend, he cancelled because to go fishing. Never asked him again.
@montyspearo yeah ppl Don't realize how it's just disrespecting your time. Glad to know I'm not the only one with these difficulties. Thanks for checking out my videos.
Few bad ones over the years lol. Two bad ones to share: One message me the night before he will be two hours late cause his wife doesn’t have a car so instead of coming at 7am his coming at 9. Another we were planning to go at 6am, he messaged me at 4:30am he accepted a job/ day tour guide or something, bailed out on us, luckily I had another buddy coming too. That was the end of those two buddies, I don’t normally give second chances, even with our long time buddies who shows up late we make sure to make fun of them for this trip and many trips after that, now everyone tries not be the last one to show up otherwise they know they will be the joker of the trip hahaha
When the dive goes down you better be ready
This is exactly why I mostly dive on my own (95%) of the time. To much expectation of others, and I am unable to relax knowing I have someone else to look out for. Yes, all you people who "buddy" dive is really great. But im not there to hold hands and babysit. If im heading out and I ask someone to come, I dont expect anything from them as I am going out anyway. If I cant afford to take people in my boat, then I should buy a boogy board instead.
Yep, I agree man! The being late thing especially pisses me off! A mate of mine has been late on me a couple of times now. The first time I let slide, but it happened a few more times after. Now I don't invite him! Lol It's about respect. Like you say, as skippers it's factored into our lives. We pay the costs, we carry the burden, we do all the work before and after... at a very minimum have the respect to be on time! Good vid mate. Merry xmas and safe diving. Cheers. Winny
@cheekypukeko hey thanks for watching. Yeah I know you've experienced some of these difficulties too. I'm lucky that my dive buddies are mostly punctual... but there is one who I've had some other issues with. Issues mentioned in this vid. I'm heading up to blenheim Xmas so hopefully doing a collab fish or dive with Alfies Outdoors... check out his channel. Hoping to shoot some butters over Xmas.
Some good gear advice, have seen many a diver turn up with all sorts of gadgets that weigh them down, forget the light and craynoose, bottom time is better than messign about with gadgets, you need to be comfortable in the water. IMO the best way to learn spearfishing is shorediving, sure it can be involve some more swimming and walking, however, its budget friendly and can often be turned around faster then a boat dive. Find your closest spots from home, then Swim, swim far, get your dive fitness up, build an underwater 3d map in your head of a stretch of coast, dive it regularly until you know every cray hole or overhang that holds crays, find the pressure point that holds fish. You dont always have a boat, but you nearly always have a car to get to a shore spot, recognize the weather patterns so you can prepare for a dive day in advance. The day you get a boat or mates get a boat, you will have the dive fitness and terrain awareness to be be productive and relaxed in the water
You are professional, well said!
Dads Army 😂😂😂
Great happy that you dived for and got your quota of paua. How naive of you to think that you discovered this rock. You sure are a movie star for revealing this dive spot to the world. Its of no concern to you that if you return, that this rock it will be cleaned out.No wonder maori have put in a reserve of no collection of shell fish around the kaikoura peninsula. The moral of my story is take your quota and shut up about it.
Thanks for taking the time to watch the video. Your critisism seems a bit harsh though. By the end of your comment it makes me wonder... are you someone that actually would prefer nobody make fishing or diving videos at all?, on the basis of "protecting the spot". If so, while I can understand the concept... it's also not the world we live in. We live in digital times where ppl take photos and videos of things they like and share them online. These are the times we live in.
@@KiwiKaimoana Read my comment again slowly brah everthing i mentioned is true.So you want to carry on doing the same thing in another district without the permission of the locals, my advice to you is watch your back.
@KotahitangaAotearoa well it's a good thing then that during the paua season... permission of the locals is not required to take the daily limit of 3x pauas. Mpi are the authority and I've been inspected by them several times. Permission of the locals is also not required to operate cameras in public places. So not to worry. Everything is all nice and legal.
Nice vid looks like a great place to teach kids how to fish..cheers
It sure is. I didn't even know about that salmon farm till recently too
Lol awesome
Fishing in the salmon farm and you caught a fish? LOL. Thats like shooting deer at a farm.
Nice one Jamie. Can tick that one off your list now, done and dusted.
@cococharliematenga4829 thanks for checking it out. Hoping to go diving and fishing on the boat tomorrow. First dive of the summer. The weather has finally settled.
Can I come with you in the weekend? I have dived all around the peninsula
@vlog3885 I'd love to say yes. But if I did I would likely be just breaking a promise to you. As you know here in Canterbury we get so few good diving days due to the terrible marine weather we get. We get wind or rain... even in summer. And it ruins the water on the peninsula all the time. The number of days I go diving in summer is only 5 to 10 days since summer is short. I have an existing group of dive buddies I try to work with because these ppl have been there for me in the past in some way shape or form. Chris, Ying, Tasman and Wayne. And there are more that at some point I planned to dive with but it never happened... either I broke the promise to them, or they broke the promise to me. I've come to learn there are practical reasons that divers stick with the same buddies and don't often let in new ppl. With so few available dive days in summer here... the scariest resource is the days themselves. The next scarcest resource is physical space on a small boat. Mine can take 2, 3 is not fun... there's really not enough space for 3 and 3 ppls gear. And if you have an existing small group of ppl that supported you in the past... you're not going to sacrifice their spot on the boat to give it to a new person. So the answer I give to ppl who want to go diving with me is now is... sure, you can come with me, meet me at the boat ramp with your own boat and your own dive buddies and both our boats can head out to the same spot. It's harsh but also it's reality. The available dive days and available space on the boat are very limited.
@vlog3885 look me up on Facebook. Kiwi Kaimoana has a Facebook page. Send me a DM. I might be able to take you this weekend if you're interested. All my dive buddies are unavailable. Weather should be good. So if you're available Saturday. Message me.
So all you did was go there just to wine about literally everything there
@MadeChurMaori-UFC I didn't "wine". Not really wining and dining. I had some beer, but I'm not a wine person. So to answer your question no...I didn't "wine". You should have a look at my other videos and check some of them out. Perhaps you can leave more feedback on them too.
Any reason why it is only kaikoura season?
Why did you upload one animation and upload blogs for the rest of the channel? Curious
I actually uploaded 8 animated short films. But most of them are unlisted. You can find them by going to the Playlist called... classics; all animations. Basically this UA-cam channel changed several times. It was animation...then paintball...then wrestling videos... now fishing and diving. But some of the early videos...the 3x godzilla videos... they still get views all these years later, which is why I don't delete them.
Thanks my brother ❤
Thanks great video
nice job bro. Any key tips or lessons learned on the wrapping part. Iv been looking at giving my old girl a wrap and trying to do it cheap as possible. Winny
Oh man. Wrapping is hard. A few tips... wrap won't stick to welds unless there's tension on it. The wrap going down centre of boat between blue and white lines over the weld... it's already pulled away and looks a bit ugly. Don't wrap over welds unless the finish ed wrap has tension. Use a heat gun but not too much heat to help smooth out wrap. Use dry application for smaller pieces of wrap... but a soapy water wet application for bigger pieces.
Also when you do wrap over welds... a heatgun will melt the wrap slightly so it conforms to the shape of the welds. And I got all my blue and white wrap offTemu. Cheap... but not the highest quality stuff.
Looks sharp dude, nice job.
I was 7 when this first came out and loved it then, now I'm 23 and still love it. Time sure has flown by hasn't it?
I am the same weight as you I use 3mm wetsuit and dive 18 meter with 6kg of weight only I should use more
We don’t have that brand in the uk but with have a few comparisons. £1500 so lot cheaper than in your country , you could get a top end 4m inflatable with a 20-25 hp engine for 5k . Thinking of similar or a skiff probably with a 6hp Parsun that choose for carrying the 15 is quite a weight ok if you have trailer
Great review. Thanks
Nice one!🤘
Thank you Byron!
Those are my crocs size 9-11 lost them on the way to cow stream up above Hamner no joke bro
@AustinThornton-l7n unfortunately those crocs were not found at cow stream or Hanmer.
Fantastic content buddy. Thanks
I happened to fall into this video and I am amazed at what you guys are doing with being so out of shape, your video almost looks like a comedy show but all the best at what you are doing because you are catching fish and doing what you do, I watched other videos and they can`t stand up to what you have going on here.
