Maria Luisa by Sagreras - recorded on the island of Mauritius 🇲🇺
Good morning from the beautiful island of Mauritius 🇲🇺
It's hard to believe but l'm off the east coast of Madagascar enjoying a nice few days of rest, good company and food, and jet lag recovery before my concert and masterclass tomorrow!
Playing Maria Luisa by Sagreras - recorded on my iPhone with no mic, but I hope you enjoy the birds singing along!
Recorded in a 2016 Martin Blackwell guitar with @daddarioandco strings (ej45ff with nylon 1st string)

This guitar is currently available! Trying something new here! For many years now, I’ve had fun buying, selling, and making videos of some of the finest guitars in the world! Typically, I make these videos (like the one you see here) private and only viewable to those viewing the listing (on Reverb or my website) and I’ve probably made close to 100 of them! I don’t make them public because they...

At the 5:30 comparison you can clearly hear how the lower register is more balanced on the cedar guitar, making each low note stand out where as they get a little confused or subdued with the spruce, but really, it's just nothing to be picking at.

I have a cedar and a spruce guitar, the latter was relatively expensive. If it's about playing soft, dark melodies, I absolutely prefer cedar. If I want to play more agitated and loud, I use the spruce guitar. Visually I like cedar more. The lightly reddish wood is just beautiful.

Watching you play Mallorca 2 on Cedar versus Spruce, I could tell immediately the second you started playing the spruce I literally said out loud “WOW” I normally prefer cedar, because I love the warmth, and slightly softer sound, but holy crap… the spruce… The note that you played at the beginning of that comparison of Mallorca 2, had a lot of overtones and clarity, and almost sounded harmonically rich. I was seriously impressed!!! I usually prefer cedar, but I think I actually like Spruce

I'm only an intermediate level player, but I prefer the cedar. I like the warmer tone. I thought Spanish Romance sounded nicer on the cedar, or it just suited it better. I'm probably biased though, as my guitars are both cedar. Great playing.

They both are great guitar. To my ears, the cedar guitar sound is darker and fuller, just like the differences between a Strad violin and a Guarneri violin.

I forgot that I left a comment a year ago. This time, my favorite are #1 Steven Walter 2023, #9 Francisco Simplicio1929, and #10 René Lacôte 1820. They all have one thing in common, a belt-like, well resonated tonal quality.

Excellent comparison. Especially using a brand and type of string most of us are familiar with, along with a couple days playing time. I find the passages in succession more helpful for this type of comparison.

I listened to this interview with great interest - I certainly didn't understand everything... But what came across to me was Stephan Connor's deep love of research, of discovering the “secrets” of the woods, of bringing the woods to life in sound. And sound is something magical, it touches us all. Thanks to Stephan Connor for this beautiful personal insight into his life and work with these wonderful guitars! And thank you Evan for sharing this very interesting conversation ! Musical greetings from Germany, Angelika 🙏👏👏
