Maria Luisa by Sagreras - recorded on the island of Mauritius 🇲🇺
Good morning from the beautiful island of Mauritius 🇲🇺
It's hard to believe but l'm off the east coast of Madagascar enjoying a nice few days of rest, good company and food, and jet lag recovery before my concert and masterclass tomorrow!
Playing Maria Luisa by Sagreras - recorded on my iPhone with no mic, but I hope you enjoy the birds singing along!
Recorded in a 2016 Martin Blackwell guitar with @daddarioandco strings (ej45ff with nylon 1st string)

This guitar is currently available! Trying something new here! For many years now, I’ve had fun buying, selling, and making videos of some of the finest guitars in the world! Typically, I make these videos (like the one you see here) private and only viewable to those viewing the listing (on Reverb or my website) and I’ve probably made close to 100 of them! I don’t make them public because they...

These little videos always start out as a project just for me. I start recording the audio to listen back to, then think "hmm, lets do it again but with video this time, it wont take that long". A half hour of recording later, followed by at least 4-5 hours of editing, and here we are! Anyhow, I thought you all might enjoy this video as much as I did making it. Please leave your thoughts in the...

My Favorite Exercises for Developing Right Hand Control (Balance and Dynamics)
Yes the spruce is bright and crisp with some warmth. Cedar is warm and rich.
To my brain the Martin Blackwell is the clear winner of tone and resonance
I think the Spruce had better high frequency response and the Cedar better low frequency response. Treble notes were noticeably brighter with the Spruce and bass notes were noticeably warmer and more resonant on the Cedar. Of course, every piece of wood is different. I prefer the Spruce for most pieces but the Cedar has more range.
Not very much different. I prefer cedar. Mostly. But the lattis brace makes them sound almost the same. I like well built Spanish traditional built guitars. I can't stand double tops........ fan bracing. A.d.t.......
Wow, 10 to 15 hours to make this video. I thumbed it up and subscribed. Now all I have to do is learn to play as well as you.
Thanks so much!
Both sound great you play very well
Nylon or cat gut
Beautiful composition! Thank you for sharing
Thank you!
Just discovered-beautiful guitar sound! Musical greetings, Angelika
Both sound great!
I know all of them will differ a bit, but how much did it weigh? Any idea?
Man idk, it's been years
Hello, I'm trying to obtain information about a acoustic electric guitar (ESP TL6) The high E string on this instrument is vey low in volume as opposed to the other 5 strings. I have recently installed a new Graphtech saddle and repaired the nut deepth at the high E string location and nothing so far is working. It would be greatly appreciated if a Tech/Luthier possibly could help me with this issue? I think it might be the Fishman undersaddle pickup going bad but i am at a loss thus far. Thanks so very much in advance. Ronald
Hi Evan, where can I buy a moov traveling nylon guitar, please?
Excellent, thanks for posting this. I prefer the cedar's rich "bass-er" tones, although both are lovely instruments.
gentil montaña > agustin barrios
Very nice. Guitar?
Well that’s just lovely!
MOOV Travel Guitar Classic 1,600€ - 1,950€
Thats really good
thanks!
Thx I like the spruce flamenco sound & strike for me the cedars have a more body or bassier tone and softer sound
Both are superb, the cedar one seems to have a very pleasant twang on the low mids that pops out even more when you play with lower dynamic.
I have just discovered this video: Thank you for the stimulating exercises you have received from David Russell. These are great suggestions!!! Thanks for sharing. 😊
for my flamenco soul only spruce
Hi I have both and the sound diference is notable Cedar is warmer and Spruce more punching sound I can tell in this side of my cell phone Tnjs
Мена люблю когда вы играл гитаре
Very cool arm pad ;-) you inspired me what to do with my old socks ;-)
Çok güzel emeğinize sağlık🎉
Thanks for the video. It helps a lot for both choosing guitars and "training ears to be more sensitive to different timbre". Of course, there's no better or worse for these two guitars. Also, in my opinion, two cedar guitars from different lutheirs can vary a lot! My overall personal choice would be the spruce guitar for chamber music and the cedar one for solo guitar performance. I really love how 'traditional' and 'authentic' this cedar guitar offers. It holds the continuity of the tones among all 6 strings. Meanwhile, the spruce guitar brings more diversity and clarity. It sounds modern and young.
Cedar (western red also called Canadian) is brittle, put punky, and prone to cracks. Instant satisfaction and later decay. Segovia did not like cedar. He was annually gifted guitars by Ramirez and said that they cedar topped guitars do not age well. This is evidenced by photos showing the bracing has distorted the cedar tops. Cedar's main advantage was 1/3 the cost of European spruce. Note that catalyzed finishes followed the use of cedar; all cost cutting maneuvers. There is a vast difference between a pre cedar, pre catalyzed guitasr form Ramirez. Ramirez is not the only maker to introduce Red Cedar. I do not own cedar topped guitars. I live in the Western Red Cedar country. I have a considerable amount of cedar guitar tops. I do not use them. Just my opinions.
Glenn Canin but id be happy with any of course 🙏🏼
I really liked your summary of the important things you learned!!!
Excellent presentation of the variants that are definitely for pieces that suit... If there is a string instrument like a Cello the Spruce top is a must... If a solo is a romantic piece the Cedar top is clearly more full and complete to the ears. So get both, need to have them.
To be a fair test of course, the spruce guitar needs a few years to sound good, whereas, the cedar guitar will sound good from its inception. I'm sure you know this. Nonetheless, something can be learned from your test. But, my point is that the spruce guitar will "mellow out" in maybe 10 years and sound fantastic for romantic music! Your playing sounds fantastic on both. Beautiful expression, attack, hand positioning, dexterity! Okay, I'm a musician (piano major), and I play classical guitar for enjoyment. I like the Spruce better. I like its clarity between notes and its purity. And, I can't help but feel that, in time, it will just get better and better (unlike the cedar which basically remains the same). The "better and better" part excites me about the Spruce Top. After some years, you will be able to show more expression--loud and soft, crisp and mellow--with the Spruce guitar. Thanks for sharing. Again, you sound "great" on both!
the cedar has a much more richer darker yet more pronounced sound. the spruce crispier sound not as palatable to the ear as the Cedar
The Müller and your tone are very elegant in this beautiful piece by Tárrega : - ) !
still have it for sale?
I'm the 1000th person to like this masterpiece
Thank you :)
love it
Beautiful!
Very smooth. Thanks.
Fantastic video arrangement! Once you hear the difference you can't unhear it, I always know what to expect in these comparison videos xD Day and Night, Sun and Moon :D
Asking about your guitar brand ?
This is their latest Vienna model, right?
one thing i notices as a spruce guitar owner is it really punishes if you play lazy! it puts a magnifying glass in every mistake you make jajajaja
This was a great interview! I became friends with Stephan a few years ago, and now I visit him about three times each summer. It's always a treat to visit him in his workshop.
SPRUCE was much brighter on all accounts. Great video, you are a magnificent player! Thank you.
You should've spent some time talking about strings. I always think about how much effort the luthier makes to make the best guitar only for guitarists to use so many different string types and gauges.
What do you do to get that beautiful color?
You can do what you want, but I followed the classical guitar restring from the head of the classical guitar department at a VA University.
cool...
Evan, is this arrangement available for purchase? I checked your website and did not see it there. Thanks!
Thanks for the message!!! I didn't write it down but I wish I did!! Maybe I will this year
