    It looks like the clay dries out your hands pretty bad how do you avoid that

    • @suburbanartistry
      @suburbanartistry 8 днів тому

      I joke and say I'm turning into a statue. It looks worse than it is, lol, but the clay does pull moisture from your hands. I have more on my hands from wedging clay that was a little too soft. If your hands are sensitive and dry out quickly, you could rinse off your hands more frequently and use lotion right after. I only have issues in the winter if I'm doing a lot with the clay. Then I use the extra thick intensive lotions. Be sure to stay on top of it or your knuckles can start cracking.

    What happens if you use multiple colors of ink? Like useing blue on the background and black on the sharks and stuff?

    • @suburbanartistry
      @suburbanartistry 2 місяці тому

      You could use multiple colors of ink but keep in mind that you are scraping it on with a card so being precise is hard, so having the color stop at an exact point might be hard to accomplish. Blending can also be cool. There is another option though, you can have one piece of plexiglass ( called the plate) where you have etched the background and a second plate where you have etched the shark. Then you print the background first, let it dry, then print the shark on it. You just have to use a registration system to make sure the paper is in the same place both times.

      How long does it take

    • @suburbanartistry
      @suburbanartistry 2 місяці тому

      Great question! The scratching takes only what you want as far as time. Think of the scratches being just like pencil lines. You could keep drawing to make it darker and more detailed or keep it really simple. For printing it's only 10 minutes. The paper soaks for about 5 minutes, you can soak more than one at a time, and then blot the paper and let it rest for about 5. During this time, warm up the ink for about a minute, another to push it in the scratches, and then probably 5 minutes to wipe it down. Then, run the plate and paper through the press. This only takes seconds. If you need to use a spoon to rub the paper into the plexiglass because you don't have a press, this might take two minutes to really get the paper into the crevices to pull out the ink. You can immediately ink the plate again and repeat and make many prints. Smaller artworks will be faster to ink and wipe than larger ones because there's less surface area.

    How hard would it be to over stretch the stitches? Also if the socks were to felt is there anyway to unfelt them?

    • @suburbanartistry
      @suburbanartistry 7 місяців тому

      Great questions! You could damage your stitches or your yarn if you pull too hard, so don't yank. It's a little less likely to do with socks which have very tiny stitches. The key is to tug an even amount in each direction and the yarn will move over itself to realign. If you pull too much in one direction, you're taking away from another direction. Tugging in the other direction helps correct unevenness and over pulling in the other direction. I always start with tugs that are a little more gentle, Knowing that I could do the process again and add a little more force if needed. The hot water causes the yarn to stretch and shrink back down as it cools which helps this evening out process. It's even more important to make sure your blockers are not too big for your socks. As to the felting question, if the two socks start sticking together you can pull them apart. If the stitches on a single sock start felting together, there's not much you can do about it. You could even felt your socks on purpose which makes them a solid fabric. Those socks are more sturdy but then you can't even out stitches that get stretched out from wearing them. If you have any more questions about this please don't hesitate to ask!

    That candle is really cool, what kind of mold did you use?

    • @suburbanartistry
      @suburbanartistry 10 місяців тому

      Thanks! This was a bit of experimenting with materials I had around. I knew I wanted to make the hand from the movie but I didn't have much time. I had an old plaster mold I had shown someone how to make, so, I was hoping that it would work for a candle. After some quick research I found that yes, you can indeed make a candle using a plaster mold but it has to be sopping wet and you need to brush on soap so it will release. I even discovered you can make your own wicks using cotton string dipped in wax as long as it is the right thickness. The gravel and glass were things my mom was getting rid of and they serendipitously worked perfectly to hold the hand up as it melted and contain the dripping wax. I plan on making another hand with a more detailed plaster mold now that I know it works. This might make a good video all on its own.

    This just popped up in my recommended today, probably because metal casting is my thing 😁Great to see your first casting project come out this good. I do a lot of pewter casting in molds I get of the internet or thrift stores, have not yet made silicone molds myself but I will in the future. Mostly I've been doing sand casting for higher temperature metals like Aluminium, Brass, Bronze and copper. Zinc has a low enough melting point that it will work in silicone too. My 3D printer is also the Mono X and it is actually printing a few patterns for a new casting project at this very moment. I subscribed and hit the bell, I'll be checking out more of your stuff 👍

      Thanks so much! I was obsessed with the idea of making the shawl red with black fluffy trim, but I hadn't planned what to wear it with. I actually thought I was going to wear it with a straight black dress but found this combo when I was going through my closet. Apparently I like this color combo because they do look perfect together! What a happy accident because now I like the dress better with it! Are there any other things you would like to see? I love making things with other people in mind.

    Just a thought, but for fiddly design elements like that eye, that aren't connected, you could actually make them connected with a thin line initially and then once you've applied the stencil to the glass, you could then cut the connecting piece away, which I think would be far easier.

    • @suburbanartistry
      @suburbanartistry Рік тому

      Lol, good idea! Why didn't I think about that! I'll have to test that out and see if I can do it without scratching the glass. Even if I do, I bet it won't be noticeable. Thanks for the tip!

    Not quite sure why there has to be 3 marks when measuring the cut out.

    • @suburbanartistry
      @suburbanartistry Рік тому

      That's a great question. It is a great trick that I learned in art school. It takes just slightly more time but helps catch mistakes. Measuring 3 times is the best way to make sure your line is straight and parallel to the edge. If you only measure once you might hold the ruler crooked when you draw your line. It's hard to eyeball it and be exactly parallel with the edge, especially if you make a large mat. Two marks is better but if one of the marks is even a mm off, it will also make your line a little bit crooked. When you make 3 marks it is like taking the average of the 3 and it is going to be the most accurate. You line up your ruler so it most closely goes through all 3 marks. If you notice that only one of your marks is way off from the others, it is a good one to remeasure just to make sure.

    How in heaven's name did that yarn fit in that little hole?!

    • @suburbanartistry
      @suburbanartistry Рік тому

      Lol, that yarn is just like a cat. Once all the fluff is wet you see how small the cat is underneath. That yarn is all fluff attached to a thread! It was still a tight fit though! And that thread had no stretch whatsoever! Unlike the red. The lack of stretch was the actual tricky part!

      And not get sick from the food! They hired an award winning chef, so we should be good there. I've been there as a kid, teenager, and adult. The last time I went there, I ate just a few bites of the food and got sick that night. The sopapillas have always been the safe choice. Even so I love this place and all the memories! It was hilarious to see it on the show because I felt the same way about it. If you want South Park landmarks, Casa Bonita is definitely better than visiting the city of South Park itself. I've driven through and it is waaay smaller, rural, and rustic than the show makes it seem, lol, but still funny to see. I take it you're not in Colorado? Lots of people who visit get dragged to Casa Bonita by the people they are visiting, just so the locals can show off the place. It will be great to see it after the TLC and making the food like it used to be or maybe even better.

      It's actually pretty bright under the dark cloth if it there's enough sun. I always focus with the aperture wide open to get all the light I can. I adjust the aperture after I focus and meter. In this case, I only needed to close it down a couple of stops. Also, the video cameras are a lot better than they used to be. We didn't need to adjust any settings!

      @@edgotbait Are there any cons or things to look out for concerning the texture created by the baseplate? It seems logical that it shouldn't be too bad for silicone, but you never know for sure until you've done it. I come from the ceramics perspective where we work with plaster and we want the plaster to be as smooth as possible, so it doesn't break off and get into the clay. That will break the clay if it goes into the kiln like that. Any other tips for using the legos? I'll have to do this again using that method and hopefully find some cheap legos!

      Lol, it does seem complicated at first. The hardest part is doing the math so the hole is just a little bit smaller than the art. But once you figure it out you will often use the same numbers.
