  • This will be a comprehensive guide on making the most common type of canvas, the stretched fabric canvas. I love making canvases and getting in the right frame of mind to make art. I can make canvases that are deep and totally unique. Learn how to make your own stretcher bars for a gallery or deep edged canvas. Then learn how to stretch the cotton canvas or other creative fabric of choice over the frame. I’ll not only share my tips and tricks for making a very professional looking canvas that looks so good it does not need a frame, but I’ll also share how much money I saved by making my own. All of my purchases were from Hobby Lobby, Walmart, and Home Depot. If I already had the supplies at home I used them, but for the pricing, which you will see at the end of the video, I used the cheapest prices I found at these 3 stores as of July of 2022. This does not factor in sales or bulk pricing that might be available there or at other locations. This also does not factor in the reusable tools, which you might already have. It will cost a little more up front if you need to get the saw and clamps. For the prices on store bought canvases, there was only one sale going on at the time. Michael’s had a buy 2 get one free offer on canvases. So, the prices you see at the end of the video are the best prices for the best places to get canvases for the size canvas that I made unless you are able to buy multiple canvases at once. These stores are the best options available in Denver.
    Our future canvases will cover a watercolor paper canvas, a wood panel canvas, when and how to brace large canvases, and possibly more . . .

      I'm so glad! I try to be thorough and share what I was taught and what I discovered along the way, especially in terms of getting quality at the best cost. There is more info to share about braces, shape, and material. I need to make more of these canvas making videos. Until then, let me know if any other canvas making questions come up. I'm a teacher, so I love to help. I also really want to experiment with making non-traditional canvases, weird ones you just can't buy in a store.

    Amazing video!!!!! The detailed steps were amazing and made me realize how cost efficient and even higher quality making your own can be. Also shout out to the Kevin cameo 😎

      Lol, I was telling him his assistance was a cameo too! Haha. I had always been really curious about much this cost me to do so I was actually fun to do the math. Let me know if you want to make one or if you would like me to make one for you someday! Is there a really creative canvas you would like to see?

      By the way, the next video is going to be another painting video and I think it is another thing you will have to try! I bet you'll really like it. You just need one tube of oil paint and some paint thinner. Have you ever heard of a wipe out painting?

      @@suburbanartistry ooo sound so fun can’t wait 🤩🤩. I haven’t as I tend to stay away from oil paint but it does sound interesting.

    This was a great video! Really inspired me to make canvases, good thing I do it for my job lol but just recently I built my own canvas from scratch to paint on. Should’ve done a time lapse with that one.

      That's awesome! I'm really curious about how your canvas making process at work compares to mine. And what image are you going to paint on the canvas? I think it is so satisfying to include making the canvas in the art making process. Look for the paper canvas coming soon. Thanks so much for watching the video and leaving a comment!

    Hey I was wondering 3 thing
    1. Making a Canvas in a different shape would be adjusting the number of strips and the angles, Right?
    2. What dose painting the sides and back of the sides do?
    3. What dose texture do?

    • @suburbanartistry
      @suburbanartistry  2 роки тому

      1. You can make canvases in different shapes and you would need to calculate the angles of your 2 pieces of wood that makes up each angle. I knew someone who was making art about the disappearing bees so she made all of her canvases hexagon shaped. It would be as simple as drawing out the shape on paper and measuring the angle from outside edge to outside edge and then diving that in half or so. You would need to use different clamps since these ones do 90 degrees only. Use a band clamp instead and it will pull all the pieces of wood tight together. Then stretch in the same way, starting from the center of each bar. Curves would be trickier like in a heart, requiring sanding and many more hospital corners and perhaps a cut in the fabric where the two bumps come inwards to a point.
      2. Painting the sides and back make sure the fabric shrinks evenly there too, stiffens it so it would stretch and loosen later, and in the case of the sides, give you a consistent, less absorbent surface to paint on. Artists will typically leave the sides white or they will actually paint them, often extending the painting from the front on to the sides.
      3. Adding texture is another effect in your painting. It can be something for your brushstrokes to play on. Depending on how wet your paint is, it might only go onto the top bits of your texture, which can exaggerate broken color like impressionism or drybrushing. It can also be a sculptural element such as giving 3D form to mountains or clouds. However, if you have a lot of detail in your paintings, then all this texture would just get in the way, make your job harder to do, and your details harder to see clearly.

    You prepped your canvas with with latex paint. Can you paint (the second layer) with other colors as to create a tan color or say a blue base? I know some people prefer a tinted base.

      You definitely don't have to stick to white paint. You just need to make sure that your second layer is still using gesso, acrylic, or latex, whatever the color might be. The first layer of paint was watered down to make the fabric shrink. The first layer isn't mean to fully cover the canvas. The second layer will create that barrier so that later layers never absorb directly into the canvas fibers but sit on top of the gesso instead. Once you've added that second layer as long as you've covered everything well, you can switch to oils without risk of damaging the canvas fibers over time. Some artists like adding just a dab of acrylic color into the gesso to take that edge off of the white paint. Color is just another way you can customize your own canvas.
