Fourth Suit Forcing
Most every bridge player considers the bid of a fourth suit to be forcing. Susan recommends that Fourth Suit Forcing is forcing to game. In this lesson she explains when Fourth Suit Forcing should be used, when it should not, and how Opener should bid following the FSF bid.
Susan Williamson, Life Master, Accredited American Contract Bridge League Teacher is the instructor and the class airs via Zoom currently every Saturday at 9:00 CT. Susan is also the founder of Fun and Games Duplicate Bridge Club.

    Very helpful video, a question on responder’s Jacoby 2N, was told not to use it with S’ton or void although in one of your early examples it is being used as such, any views? Also in case of agreed suit being H, wouldn’t kickback RKC help as it starts the process at 4S to avoid overshooting 5H if needed?

    • @RedDirtBridge

      Hi Vijay, You are quite right about Kickback RKC. The reason I did not mention it is because it is beyond the level of understanding for most of the Saturday morning participants. The groups was originally designed for rank beginners; we are obviously way beyond that now, but most participants are early intermediates. I use Jacoby 2 NT for hands that exceed a total value of about 14 pts. This is because a splinter bid can take up most of the bidding space that may be needed for slam exploration. Not everyone plays it this way, so if you and your partner prefer not to put a top limit on a splinter bid, that is completely fine. Thanks for your input! Susan

    On board 9, even if diamonds break 3-3 you'd have a very hard time getting more than one trick unless you can get the opponents to play away from their ace twice. So it's far less than 36% chance.

  • @d95mback
    @d95mback 2 місяці тому

    On number 6, you don't need to cue bid, just bid 6S after 3S, you are missing only one ace. No risk of messing up cue bids.

    At 15:50, wouldn't the 4D bid deny a control in clubs? So partner should not show control in hearts without control in clubs.

    • @kiwisteam7451
      @kiwisteam7451 2 місяці тому

      I agree! Bidding 4C would be a 1st/2nd round control. Responder could/would cue bid the Heart Control.

    • @RedDirtBridge
      @RedDirtBridge 2 місяці тому

      It is not wrong to bid 4 clubs first, showing a control. Partner does not have a diamond control, so he would show the heart control if he has it. If Responder has the club A, but not the heart Ace, he will bid 5 clubs over 4 diamonds, and then Opener can settle for 6 spades. However,since the auction is still below the game level, I would show the heart Ace if I had it (as Responder), regardless of which minor suit control Opener shows. You never know what your partner will find to be helpful.

    • @d95mback
      @d95mback 2 місяці тому

      @@RedDirtBridge At least in our partnership we would play it as 4H shows control in BOTH hearts and clubs. Since partner skipped clubs, they don't have control, so if we don't have it either, slam is off.

    • @RedDirtBridge
      @RedDirtBridge 3 місяці тому

      Maxi-Michaels referrs to that rare hand that is 5-5 in two suits and contains 16+ HCP. The mini-Michaels bidder (the more common occurrence) shows about 8-11 HCP. The overcaller with the maxi hand will take another call after Advancer shows a preference, but the holder of the weaker hand will seldom do so.

    1:07:24 - you wouldn't bid 2S here because after doubling that would show a weak hand with about 6 spades - the bidding could go 3C - 3S - then a special bid of 5S would indicate we probably have everything but we have 2 losers in diamonds - east if they are brave can then bid 7S with a void in diamonds.

    • @RedDirtBridge
      @RedDirtBridge 4 місяці тому

      When using LTC, Qxx is 3 losers unless it’s the trump suit. If that is the trump suit, count 2 losers. The reason is that the Q is not supported by another honor. With AQx, I count 1 loser, but it’s closer to 1.5. QJx is 2 losers only. Note that using LTC for purposes of hand reevaluation is NOT the same as counting losers as Declarer.

    Thank you for the videos. Right at the end where Susan mentions that 5/4 in the majors should be a 1M bid & not 1NT, is this across the full 15-17 range of HCP or for hands that are 16-17 only, otherwise wouldn’t reverse be an issue?

    • @RedDirtBridge
      @RedDirtBridge 6 місяців тому

      I would consider a reverse if I held 5 hearts and 4 spades with 16-17 HCP. If I held 5 hearts and 4 spades, my partner has the option of bidding 1 spade if he holds 4 cards in that suit after I open 1 heart. If he fails to do that, he will either bid 1NTf or give me a 2/1 game-forcing response. I can deal with either of those eventualities with this point range. Holding only 15 HCP, I will either need to rebid my 5 card heart suit or a 3 card minor if partners responds with a forcing 1NT. If I don’t have a 3 card minor (my shape is 5-4-2-2 or 4-5-2-2), then I must rebid the 5 card heart suit. This is an area that requires some partnership discussion. It’s always OK to modify this or any other set of openings and responses to accommodate partnership style. Thanks for the comment, Vijay. It raises a good point! Susan
