No more gravel racing in 2024
No more gravel racing in 2024.
So far the 2024 gravel race season has been the season of bad luck. I had hoped to turn it around in the coming months, but that will not happen.
A week ago I tore my achilles tendon. A complete Achilles Tendon rupture.
So now the gravel race season of 2024 is over for me.
An achilles tendon rupture is a pretty serious injury and it will take some time to heal. So instead of riding gravel the rest of 2024 will be about rehabbing my achilles tendon. I've already made big plans on how I plan to get back in shape and I'll try to make cool content about it.
So stick around. I will come back stronger for gravel races in 2025.

So sorry to hear this, I hope you recover fast. When you started to have Achilles issues did you do any strengthening exercises? I've also had issues in the past and I've been doing calf raises for the last two years or so. I'm a bit worried that this can happen to me as well.

Thanks. Hope for a fast recovery 🙏 I've had issues for maybe 5 year. Done lots of work to try and make it better, but nothing really help. A few year back I got an ultrasound on it and was told it would never get better. To much scare tissue in it. That was when I stopped running completely. Because of all the scare tissue the achilles was very unflexible and not as strong. I think this was what ended up making it rupture.

I crashed my bike on my honeymoon, shattered my collarbone and 4 ribs. My wife was pregnant too. The worst part though is not being able to ride, it shows how addicted to it we are. I was able to Zwift after a few weeks at least. It never healed properly even with surgery. You can still do lots of things with your kid though, you can play with him and read to him that is really important for a child, so make the most of the 'down' time with him!

That's not the honeymoon you hope for. Sorry to hear it never healed right. As a mention in the video not being able to train is bad, but not being able to play around with my son and help out at home and with the wedding is worse. I do the chill stuff with him, but i hate that I can't pick him up and play around with him. But I think I'll be able to move more around in a few weeks.

Mads, my friend, I feel for you, 4 years ago someone pulled out in front of my tt bike with a van. I hit it at 56kmh, shattered my shoulder socket, shoulder blade and collar bone and pushed the whole lot through my ribs and into my lung, 4 months of bed rest, doctors told me I would not get full functionality of my arm and I wouldn’t swim and probably not ride a bike again, until then I was competing in Ironman. With titanium ribs, a collar bone in three parts and reduced lung function I could run-walk 1 mile. It took me a year to train up to ultra marathons, then I decided the surgeons were too used to sick people so I bought a grail (suspension for the shoulder see? And tried to swim again, I am a bit slower on the swim, but otherwise did Corke 70.3 last summer (the one where two people drowned) and mostly got hooked on riding gravel. There’s always next year. I would also suggest the following for preparing for next year’s race season .Core work and lower back strength training especially if you are having continued lower back problems. Off season training may include 1) Kettle Bells 2) Isometric exorcizes 3) Rowing machines 4) Swimming which will all help with develop functional strength, explosive power and works the cardiovascular system. Being able to take time off the bike will also help you recoup mentally. Thankfully you also have a good support system with friends, family and an on-line community. Cheers!

Det er i hvert fald blevet mit go to gravel dæk.

Not sure what level I would be racing at if a races on the road. Not really that much into road racing. My background is long distance triathlons and have only been racing gravel for less than 2 year. I believe block training is a great tool. Done shorter HIT blocks before, but never more than a week. But I found that to be very beneficial too. Since the block I've done more threashold and sweetspot work. I done a fair bit more intensity now. Not many easy rides anymore. But it will be interesting to see how it will work out long term. Hope this answers your questions.

@@gravelracingwithmadsbang cheers much appreciated. are your five minute power numbers mentioned in the video not very low compared to your ftp? for context, when I'm fit my ftp is about 280, maybe 290, so way lower than yours but my one off five minute power is around 385 and could probably do at least 340 for 5 by 5, although never have

8 watts on 368 watts is well worth having.

very interesting that you actually proved most previous studies wrong. so it IS possible. but i'd say it is depending on each person and how they recover. but as you said. recovery would be best. doing this training for more than 3 weeks might actually make you worse. but for a short term build to an event it could work

You are right. It's not for everyone. I have a long training history behind me and lots of low intensity training. For people with a different background it might not work the same. I agree, I think 3 weeks was the right amount. Good to come out of something like this feeling on top.

Sometimes adversity makes you stronger and better prepared for the next race. Hope your back has healed and you are back training.

Oh crap man…. 🙄, this sucks. But these things happen, especially on a wild course like that. Shit, sorry dude, but you are in good shape so now you can taper down the hard rides and find another event to test your shape. You will bounce back brother. You got it.🤛🏻😎

Thanks mate. It sure sucked. Way to much mud for my liking. Got a ticket to gravel onefifty in the Nederlands on 13th july. Did the race last year, had a bad day on the bike, but a very very cool race. So finger crossed.
