Evolv Aggressive Shoe Try On Verbal Demo( its a long one!!!!! )

The Plastic Fantastic Climbing crew grabbed some pairs of the new Evolv X1s. Sorry for such a late review. Completely my fault and my busy schedule. Also sorry for no clips of Derick. This is Evolvs new sensitive shoe and we try to talk it out and see if we all believe if they are and if they are worth it. ...

    This video was a great, in-depth, look at these shoes! I was just able to snag them from the Evolv store for $87! They're only my 2nd climbing shoe so I am anticipating the patience it may require to get used to them, but for the price point I got them at, I'm really excited for the X1 to be my first more aggressive climbing shoe. I was hesitant at first but all of the talking points in this video really helped me feel more confident that I will inevitably enjoy the X1. Thanks dudes!!!

    As a climber upgrading from a pair of tarantulace shoes, I definitely had to get used to how they felt. At first, they felt painful, but after wearing them for a few days to break them in, they molded to my feet really nicely and I must say they feel really good.

    How does the Agro compare to the Oracle? I bought the Oracle, but i bought it a little snug and they wont break in :p so i dont see myself using the oracle's outsider when the summer comes and must buy a size UP to manage a Long climb outside 🤣

    • @akafotoboy9802

      hey Sverre! In terms of fit, it is significantly different. I would normally take an 8.5 in my oracles for a snug but comfortable fit. But for the same feeling in my Agros, I got a 9.5. And that was pretty much across the board. The crew all got sizes normally larger than they normally get. In terms of performance, in my bag, I carry two shoes. My oracles and my agros. I don't think I need more than that! They have the performance of an elite aggressive shoe with the power in the toe you would expect from a down toe shoe. Thanks for watching!

    • @akafotoboy9802
      @akafotoboy9802 4 роки тому

      Hello Cameron, I personally would choose a tad bit more aggressive shoes for bouldering those grades but don't let that stop you from trying. I personally have worn them for V6/7 climbs and they work well but I know in the back of my mind, I wanted something a tad bit more down toe. Shoes are shoes. They are tools to help you achieve whatever you want. Some tools are better for some jobs and other for others. I still see guys killing it in mocasyms on hard ass bouldering problems and those are very not aggressive one bit. I personally, love an aggressive shoe. Thanks for watching and asking an awesome question!

    Hi Jeremy. Would you recommend theses shoes for a novice if they do fit well and is comfortable enough? I’m a guy but I have slightly arched and narrow feet.

    • @akafotoboy9802
      @akafotoboy9802 6 років тому

      Edmond Phon Hey Edmond!!! That’s really a great question. I want to start by saying I have a wider foot and so does the majority of the people I’ve spoken to that love it. That being said, it is a lace closure system and that may help with cinching it up tight enough for your foot but I can’t say that positively. But in terms of if they do fit and you feel they are comfortable, I would absolutely buy them regardless of if you are a novice or not. They are really comfortable and perform at such a high level that I can’t see why anybody wouldn’t like them if they fit your foot style. So to recap: Would highly recommend them if they fit your foot. Not really sure if they would fit a narrow and slightly arched foot because mine and the rest of the crew have normal to wide feet. But if you would like a suggestion, the X1 from evolv are def narrow and are great performers. You can also take a peek at the 5.10 Hi Angles but grab the low volume version. Also give the solutions in the LV version as well. Ooooooooo.... try out the Evolv Shakras as well. They are Low Volume and a killer of a shoe. Hit me back up once you try them out or any of those other suggestions.

    • @just1ed
      @just1ed 6 років тому

      akafotoboy Thanks for the suggestions. I went to the store to try out the oracle today and they’re quite comfortable but my left foot is slightly bigger than my right so one feels very tight and the other fits just nice. I’ll try the website and order split sizing. They don’t stretch that much do they? Some say to buy it tight and season and break them in, but there’s an increasing group of people who feel that shouldn’t be the case at least not for synthetic leather.

    Hey, great review, just what I was looking for to make a decision in getting a pair myself. However, I also come from the Five Ten Hiangle 2016 model and I just want to know how does the toe box and heel cup feel in comparison to the Evolv X1 as I have a relatively narrow toe box and heel? Also, I mainly indoor gym boulder but also sport climbing occasionally; would it be suitable for both disciplines? Thanks for the video again, and look forward to your opinion. Keep up the good work!

    • @plasticfantasticclimbing8189
      @plasticfantasticclimbing8189 6 років тому

      Hey Brandon, Great question. It is narrower than the Hi Angles and will take a bit of breaking in to get them to feel like they stretched. So the Toe Box will need time to stretch but the heel cup works amazingly. I find that mine personally cups my heel well and that I have yet to feel like there is something that I wouldn't be able to accomplish. The shoes are amazing once broken in but will take some time to get there. I've bouldered and Sport Climbed in them and found they are quite effective. I do take them off in between my climbs on long routes.

    I've worn these on rock and indoors. I agree they are the most comfy climbing shoes I've ever worn comparing to La Sportiva. The Oracle have an amazing toe box, love bump is a great idea. Big fan of the rubber for toe hooking. Excellent sensetivity and good flex. Excellent for smearing, toe hooking and great on small technical foot holds. I've worn them on a super steep sport route recently and the down side to this shoe is the heel. Even with the sling shot tensioner it still felt like pulling of. I feel la Sportiva shoes have a better design in cupping the heel more aggressively. Where as the Oracle don't cup aggressively at all. If Evolv makes a small adjustment to the heel cupping, I would hands down say Evolv Oracle is the ultimate climbing shoe that does it all.

    How do the Evolv Oracles compare to the FiveTen Dragons?

    • @plasticfantasticclimbing8189
      @plasticfantasticclimbing8189 6 років тому

      Hello Jonathan, Awesome!!! You are bringing such a classic winner for a comparison. First and foremost, the rubber is not as soft as the Dragons. So if you really like how the Dragons are sensitive, the shoes will not feel the same. Also, the Dragons are more of a precision kind of tool in comparison to the Oracles, which are more of an all purpose kind of shoe. The fit is a little different between the two as well. The Dragons run narrower than the Oracles. Also, I always felt there was a more of a curve laterally to the Dragons( like a comma ), so the Oracles will feel more comfortable that way. In truth there are a ton of differences between the two shoes. The Dragons are running off an exisiting last and the shoe really hasn't changed much over the years. Obviously, the shoe is a top performer for 5.10 so there really hasn't been much need to change the shoe. Evolve just put all the newest climbing tech they had in the Oracles so that in itself is a huge difference. I honestly love both shoes( I verge on mostly respecting the Dragons now ) but the Oracles are way too comfortable and way too good of a shoe not to be used and worn on the rock. Either way, you'll love both. The Dragons for their classic performance and the Oracles for their comfort and superb performance.

      Hello Chelsey!!! We have some swells but have not put it through the testing that the corkcicles have been through and can't really give you an honest opinion yet. On first take we love both but seriously, I personally use my pink corkcicle on the daily and it has not missed a beat on keeping things cold!!!

    Brilliant! Thank's guys really helped me make up my mind about these. I do have to ask... I already own a pair of TIGHT Shamans (downsized a full size). Would these in my street size be a bit redundant? I'm looking for an all round multi-pitch/gym/all-day-bouldering shoe and despite the tightness I love the evolv shaman fit.

    • @plasticfantasticclimbing8189
      @plasticfantasticclimbing8189 6 років тому

      heya!!! Not redundant at all.They are pretty different shoes. The Shamans have a very different feel to them because of front toe being down turned and the Supras being made to edge. We def. felt a street shoe size comparison was comfortable and also very high performing. For an all day shoe multi pitch shoe( that performs really high ) we feel that these could be the thing you are looking for. Jeremy, def felt that by having a pair of these and a really aggressive shoe, he could use those two shoes to complete his shoe kit.

    I found them to be extremely small. I usually size down 1 from my street shoe, but had to size up .5 to make it fit . The sound cuts off in your video btw around 10:20

      Hello Sir W....This actually gets asked a bit. The truth is we are very fortunate to have companies send us free material for us to talk about and review. We are under no obligation to say anything positive or sell any of the products we review. Personally, I feel like I would never slander any company but more importantly give my opinions that could maybe help anybody who were to watch the videos. Hopefully, they can see that bad mouthing a product doesn't help anyone but really a review that tells a consumer who it is best suited for, is. Maybe there are things that might be helpful to the companies who donate things to us, that could help create a better product, and hopefully our reviews help them make improvements. Evolv was one of our first sponsors and I am very grateful to them.They create shoes with specific purpose and specific fits and I find that is rather helpful towards the climbing community. Does this help?

    • @TriggerRidesEverything
      @TriggerRidesEverything 6 років тому

      That's true. Bad mouthing a climbing shoe is not cool as shoes are so subjective. Ultimately we have to find out what suits us best.

    whats wrong with a fuzzy rope, how is that showing damage?

    • @jepa5805
      @jepa5805 7 років тому

      Hey Ryan, A fuzzy rope is a sign of your outer sheath getting wear and tear. It'll start getting friction burns and start micro fraying. It typically looks like a very fuzzy bloated caterpillar. And obviously, with this much wear and tear, it becomes difficult to belay ( it becomes harder for the rope to pass through the belay device ) and from here more friction is impacted on the core. I hope that helps!

    • @jepa5805
      @jepa5805 7 років тому

      Oh Man... that is a choice to be made. I feel if you want a really aggressive shoe, it should be the Agros. But if you are looking for a normally aggressive shoe, the shakras are for you. Also take not that the Shakras come from a LV width so keep that in mind.

    Thanks for the review! Decided on the agros while i get my solutions resoled. Upsized 1/2 to 10.5. Still breaking them in but was able to climb a full session out of the box. Super comfy for such an aggressive shoe. Time will tell but i give them a plus out the box due to basically zero break in time. The adjustable strap is not to be underestimated. You can really dial in the fit. Definitely recommend!!

    Hey! I was just wondering, would you suggest these or the Evolv Defy as a comfortable shoe which would mostly be used for easy climbs in gyms and multipitches? Comfort and durability are more important than performance for me in these shoes since I own a pair of shamans for when performance is what I need. And if Kronos is the way to go, should I go for street size or size up 0.5 - 1 size? Thanks in advance!

    • @plasticfantasticclimbing8189
      @plasticfantasticclimbing8189 7 років тому

      hey Gertjan! I remember wearing the Defys ages ago when I was looking for an Anasazi replacement. They def. can perform but I feel they are too soft for my preferences now. All the soft portions are not in the right places for me and I, personally, need a little bit more toe stiffness for me to really enjoy a shoe. But that being said, I feel the Kronos has that. They have the stiffness up front for me to create the movement and footwork that works best for me. And if you up size in them they are extremely comfortable. Albeit, not as comfy as the Defys. If you are kicking it in the gym and want a great gym shoe, get the Defys. If you are doing long pitches way below your limit, get the Defys. But if you have smidgen of hesitation about wanting to have a performance shoe at any point during your easy climbing, get the Kronos( side note if you have a LV foot, grab a Kira ). Hopefully this helps and thanks for reaching out!

    • @gertjangoetynck5074
      @gertjangoetynck5074 7 років тому

      Seems like an upsized Kronos is exactly what I need, since I'd prefer these shoes to be pretty stiff. Would you suggest going up half a size, or a full size? I will surely test these in the shop, but I find it hard to really judge how shoes fit simply because they aren't worn in yet.

    • @gertjangoetynck5074
      @gertjangoetynck5074 7 років тому

      Since I am looking for a stiffer shoe, the Kronos really seems the way to go. Would you suggest upsizing a full size, or would that be too much? I will surely fit them in the shop, but I feel like that won't be representative of the real comfort of the shoe since it won't be worn in yet.

    • @plasticfantasticclimbing8189
      @plasticfantasticclimbing8189 7 років тому

      Gertjan Goetynck I wouldn't go a full. I think a normal half would be good. I have a pair of 8 ( Shamans 8.5 ) and I feel the 8.5 would be perfect for a comfy all day shoe.

      It def fits in mine. I carry it in a Saab Convertible and a Volvo Xc70. I also love that it is flat on two sides so if you lay it on its side it doesn't roll as much as if it was a complete cylinder.

    I am so shocked to hear that the shoe size on the Kira she fit into was her street size! I just got mine from REI in my street size of 6 1/2, and it's like these are children sizes. I couldn't even get it on my foot. I've worn a 6 in rentals at the gym, and yet a half size up in these was so small, it was ridiculous. Obviously, Evolv has their sizing wrong. I spoke to REI's customer support. They talked with a product specialist and per them, and many of the reviews from women on their site most people have sized up 2 sizes. I just thought any girl thinking about the Kira should know. I just reordered an 8 1/2, so we'll see if they fit.

    • @plasticfantasticclimbing8189

      This is great info! Yeah, we didn't really have a problem with sizing on this shoe. So far we have only noticed that the Evolv Agros being the only must try on for shoe sizing. But this is a great share!

      Hello Jamie! Thats great to hear. I had the chance to run to Evolv and talk to some peeps out there and they too have said that people were having problems with finding the right fit. So I guess it really was our people that had no problem with that super snug feel. I guess the answer is to run to the store and really try them on and get the fit they like the best. Thanks again!!!

      My wife was the same. I think they also use synthetic uppers so they don’t stretch as much either. My wife ended up returning them for scarpa

      Agree! I’m an 8.5-9 and had to size all the way up to 10.5. They fit my feet snug like a sock with my toes moderately crimped at the end. 10’s had my toes very much crushed together and bunched up very tight. I think most people will need to size up at least 1 whole size from their street shoes.

    how do these fit compared to the futura? I'm looking to get a pair, but there's nowhere near by that carries them

    • @plasticfantasticclimbing8189
      @plasticfantasticclimbing8189 7 років тому

      The Supras are not as " hugging as the futuras ". Due to the extra straps on Supras you def. feel like you have extra stuff on the top of your foot. You don't feel like it gets in the way of your climbing but if you are comparing it to the Futuras, you know it is there. Also if your foot is normal to wide, you'll feel the Supras will have more room for your foot compared to the Futuras as well.
