    I love when skinny people who have NEVER had a weight problem talk about how being overweight is unhealthy? DUH! As a 70 year old woman who has been fat, thin, fat, thin my whole life what makes you think I like being fat? What makes you think what you say is original? I have heard this for 65 years.

    I’ve binge watched this channel after receiving some bad news from the cardiologist last week. My weight has been up and down for years. I’ve done keto, low carb, weight watchers, and even Mediterranean over the years. I’m the main cook in my home. My partner “needs” meat every meal. I’m finding it difficult to mesh our diets.

    Hi Dr Anna I can only walk. I currently have a frozen shoulder linked to thyroid, or my lack of thyroid. My antibodies reactivated and seem to have possibly caused the FS, so resistance training isn’t something I can do for my upper body unfortunately. Living on a farm it’s also coming up to snake season, well they are already about just not as fast. We do have some of the deadliest snakes here. I do have a treadmill that I can use so was wondering if putting that into use and on an incline would that increase resistance in my lower body enough to help me get cardio plus strengthening exercises? Under GP and Endocrinologist I am allowed to exercise.

    I’ve been following you for a while now and every video is helpful in some way. I too have been eating in the Mediterranean style and I’ve re-joined a local gym for some weight training. I have a dog so we are walking some every day but I could probably do a bit more of that. lol My downfall is sugar; in that area, I seem to have once again lost my self-discipline. I need to get better at that. Since I’m post-menopause, I’m told there could be hormonal changes affecting my ability to lose weight as well. Is that a possibility? Are there foods that should be avoided (or included) in that situation? If that’s the case, could you perhaps work in a video on that topic? Thanks for sharing with us weekly, Dr. Anna!

    I try to eat Mediterranean, but sometimes my busy life interferes. I’m glad soup season is almost here and that my husband doesn’t mind repeating meals. I can get so much nutrition in a soup and they are filling. My biggest problem is snacking too much. I am often not hungry when snacking so I need an alternative to snacking when I walk in the kitchen. Haha! Maybe do a few squats of leg kicks before starting cooking and keeping a glass of water or herbal tea nearby. I love exercise and generally get enough. I depend on exercise videos a lot because we have a dangerous road to walk on, but my husband and I generally do a 2-3 mile hike 2x a week at a local nature center. 😊I park at the far end of the parking lot when I can, take steps instead of elevator, etc. I am down from 255 to 205, but seem stuck at that weight because I probably need to tweak my diet to have less calories.

    I have been eating med style for 3-4 months. My LDL has plummeted and I have lost 10-15 pounds but now seem to be stuck. You mentioned in one video about set points for our weight. I believe I have hit one of those that doesn’t want to be lower. Since going on the med diet I have cut calories to 1200-1500 per day and have started using a recumbent bike daily for 25-30 minutes (200-250 calories according to bike). Any thoughts on how to break through?

    We’ve been eating Med for a few years now. I have an obesity management medical team, and they are very supportive with Med eating. Yes, I take a GLP1 agonist (T2D diabetes). For life. And I’m okay with that. I’ve lost almost 130 pounds. A hernia was discovered, and I recently had a consult with a reconstructive plastic surgeon for hernia repair & a panniculectomy. I’m waiting for insurance approval. I can relate to unsafe conditions for exercise. In my complex there is nowhere safe to walk. I utilize UA-cam videos.

      I’m the same way. My kids, however, look in the pantry and fridge and say “we have all of this food, but nothing to eat”.😂 They would prefer the convenience of grabbing something quick. So, I’ve been taking time on Sundays to food prep for the week so everyone can just grab the prepped ingredients and make it into a custom meal whenever they’re hungry.

    I am 67 and female. I do cardio 5 days a week heart rate between 140-160 during the cardio anywhere from 30-1 hr 15 minutes. 4 days a week I follow the cardio stint with muscle work fatiguing with weights- usually this keeps my heart rate up. I eat meditaranian about 80 percent of the time and have two alchohol beverages on Friday and Saturday none during the week. My BMI is about 26.8 and I’m battling the last 5 lbs. All of my metabolic health is excellent and my BP is 100ish over 60ish. Resting HR 50. The thorn in my side is my LDL which is about 160 I have gotten it into the 150s but currently being religious about Mediterranean eating and introducing oat bran(excellent soluble fiber) I will be excited to see if I have impacted that one thorn. 😊 Dr. Anna you are the best-I could listen to you all day. 😊

    I love that you did this! You are a doctor, I don't expect you to be a chef. After all it takes a lot to become a doctor and you are very busy. However, cooking Italian is something I have studied for many years. You nailed everything except one thing. From my understanding you never put oil on your pasta. The thinking is that the oil interferes with the pasta absorbing the sauce. Oh yeah, second thing. You typically cook the pasta until just before al dente then you add it to the sauce and finish cooking it in the sauce. But still, I hope you do LOTS more of these cooking videos.

My personal view is that protein powders can be an excellent tool to help people boost up their intake, and many experts on athletics and performance typically recommend them. Have you tried fortified nutritional yeast flakes? At breakfast I layer mashed avocados/yeast flakes/berries/yeast flakes/berries/drizzle of balsamic glaze (to hold next layer of yeast flakes)/top with watercress, flat leaf parsley, OR organic protein greens. 🥬 Find all on Amazon and Amazon Fresh. Dinner? Slowly simmer 3 chicken breasts in gluten free condensed cream of chicken soup, 8 oz whole fat evaporated milk, 8 oz. GF beef or chicken broth. Slow simmer till shreddable. Add 2 or 3 cups broccoli/12oz broth or evaporated milk/1T. Tumeric powder. Simmer 15 minutes. Gradually stir in 1/2-3/4 C of fortified nutritional yeast (tastes like a mild cheese) Add more liquid if not saucy enough. Simmer on low for 10 minutes. Leftovers? Freezes well. Thaw. Add a bit of dairy and microwave. Delish.

    I’ve been waiting for a video like this - thank you so much! I’ve been concerned about my protein intake since embracing a Mediterranean-like diet but now I see that by simply doing what I’ve been doing, I’m so close to meeting my needs. I’m so glad you walked us through how to calculate our daily protein needs. I’m also adding a scoop of collagen powder to my morning coffee/smoothie for a head start in the morning. I don’t want to rely on supplements but I think that it gives me a simple daily boost in case I fall short sometime during the day.

    Hey, is canned tuna not a recommended option? 😅

    • @annapleetmd
      @annapleetmd 7 днів тому

      Tuna is great! It does contain more mercury and often comes from farmed fish, so it’s not my number 1 option I teach to folks, but I love tuna personally and do buy canned sometimes.

    I don't understand kilograms I only understand pounds so if someone weighs 111 lb for example how many grams of protein would be healthy?

      According to Google, 111 lbs is 50.35 kilograms.

      @@barb7014 wait a minute so that means that someone who weighs 111 lb needs to eat 50 grams of protein a day?? 50 g of protein seems a bit too low isn't it??

      @@barb7014 it's Confusing!! I don't like protein foods to be honest but I know it's important to get enough protein I just wish I could know the exact number I'm supposed to eat everyday

      I think you got the idea. The calculations are usually done in kilograms, which makes it more confusing for Americans. In general, if you want to stick with pounds, if someone weighed 111 pounds then 40-50g of protein would be roughly the minimum amount to eat to not be deficient. And about 100 grams is probably a maximum number for someone who is lifting lots of weights. I always encourage people to seek guidance from a dietitian if they want more 1-1 guidance.

    Hey Dr. Anna- wonderful presentation. Thank you. I had a question about what I read once that was called "Protein Efficiency"? i.e. a term used to determine how efficient the amino acids from a protein can be absorbed by the body? The person writing about this used eggs an example. The egg, he said, has a high protein efficiency ratio because although it doesn't have as many grams of protein as some other protein foods, the aminos in an egg are absorbed more efficiently than most other protein foods. Is that true? I lift in the gym and I'm trying to keep my protein intake high so I'm eating mainly eggs as my only animal protein source. All my other protein sources are mainly coming from my Mediterranean diet ( Lentils, raw nuts, chia seeds, Ezekiel Bread, nut butters..) Are some protein foods better absorbed by the body than others? Blessings ❤

      So this is the million dollar question! I’m not sure there is really any “proof” that certain amino acids from plant vs animal sources for example are better or worse absorbed, it would be more based on if someone has an absorption issue like a lack of pancreatic enzymes or gut disorder causing them the issue rather than the foods themselves. You will hear vegans claim that plant protein is equal or even better than animal protein, and pro-meat folks like carnivore diet fans claim that animal protein is the only “true” or “pure” protein. None of it is substantiated. The goal is to just get enough of all 9 essential amino acids no matter the source :)

    Did you not know that Quinoa is the only food in the world that has all 9 amino acids? Doctor? Also what type of fiber is this? Insoluble or soluble?

    • @annapleetmd
      @annapleetmd 9 днів тому

      Hm, I’m not sure what you mean by this question, given that many other foods contain all 9 essential amino acids and thus are considered complete proteins - soy, dairy, eggs, meat, poultry, buckwheat, as well as quinoa. Could you clarify? And for your fiber question, there is both soluble and insoluble fiber in quinoa
