Grayling of the Arctic /\\ Great Bear Lake #northwestterritories
#plummers #greatbearlake #tree river #grayling #laketrout #underwater
I recently came back from a bucket list trip. My wife, Sam, and I spent a week at Plummers Arctic Lodges at Great Bear Lake. I have so much video to go through, it will take a while to get a full video out showing the whole experience. In the meantime, I had enough arctic grayling action in 1.5 hours of fishing to get a quick little video uploaded and give you a taste of what is to come.
While at Great Bear Lake we did do a fly-out trip, an over night stay at Tree River on the Arctic Ocean. It was a tough day. I only caught a couple fish, we casted lures for about 12 hours, hiked 4 km along the river after a heavy rain storm that made the rugged trails very slippery. We were beaten up from the amazing, yet strenuous activity. Arriving back at the main lodge and having only a few hours of fishing before the end of the day we decided to fish close to base and target grayling. I wanted to get some while in the north, they are such a pretty and fun fish.
It was a good call. We got 24 fish in 1.5 hours of fishing, 6 lake trout and 18 grayling. You'll notice we limited the handling of the fish. I learned last year in Great Slave Lake that these feisty grayling are very hard to hold on to for photo taking. Instead of harming the fish I decided to use my net and an under water gopro to capture release shots while they swam away and in my opinion those videos/pictures are far better then the ones I would have taken while holding the fish, potentially harming them.
I truly love the arctic and I want to visit again. It feels like another world yet feels like home at the same time. That, and it was a great vacation away from the summer heat down south and the horrible July mosquitoes (worst I've ever seen, no exaggeration I feel like a prisoner in my own home, just walking around my yard is painful and I instantly lose my mind within seconds). I wish I could have stayed up there!
Anyway I really hope you enjoyed the action, cheers and tight lines everyone!

    There could a number of factors to take into consideration here but I don't disagree, enforcing regulations is VERY important. Otherwise what is the point in having them (?) It is the same in the Lac Du Bonnet/Lee River area, there isn't a conservation officer to be found anywhere. I am never checked anytime or anywhere I go.

    • @differentfins

    a year later does the rod hold up?

    • @differentfins
      @differentfins 16 днів тому

      To be honest I don't use the rod most days so it sees very little wear and tear. It is my travel rod to toss in the car on a road trip or place in my bag when flying. I am in the Arctic right now and it is up here with me... maybe I'll have an update later this week. It is an Ugky Stik though and they seem to last forever.

    I can afford more expensive rods than ugly stik however I dont see the point in spending the extra money because I am hard on my gear. • @differentfins
      @differentfins 19 днів тому

      Oh 100% the St Croix 4 piece rod I had before was lighter and more sensitive. But like every other expensive rod I've owned it eventually broke. If you are one of those guys who takes 12 rods to the lake you can afford to have one or two break but the warranty doesn't comfort you when you are fishing in the backcountry and your only rod breaks. Even if they were the same price I would take an Ugly Stik over the St Croix. Honestly the new Ugly Stiks are getting much better yet still keep their rugged toughness

    This review is not an accurate representation of this rod, which has a chronic defect: the tip end section does not stay connected and flies off the rod. I bought one of these about four years ago. On my first trip after about four casts the rod tip section suddenly flew off the rod. I reattached it more firmly, twisting it on. I got about four more casts before it flew off again. No matter what, I could not get that rod tip to stay put rendering the rod useless. I did a Google search to see if other people had this problem and discovered that many people did. There are lots of consumer reviews reporting this exact same problem, and no one had a solution. I wrote to UglyStik customer service, explained the problem, and asked for them to cure the problem under the five-year warranty. I got no response. I wrote a second time. No response again. I wrote a third time and again got no response. I will never buy another UglyStik product and strongly recommend that you avoid this four-piece travel rod as it has a known, chronic defect that renders the product unusable. Even worse, the manufacturer will neither stand behind its product and honor warranty claims, nor even respond to correspondence by customers seeking product help.

    i use to make steel leaders fishing in canada for pike. then i started making them out of 80 test which was much faster and i could make one up in the boat if need be. i never had a pike break or bite through one. the walleye or (pickerel) as old canadians say still bite the lure. it doesn't seem to bother them. many of the old time canadians prefer to fish with minnows but i find it a lot easier to fish with white or yellow twister tails or beetle spins. your video's make me want to get in my truck and head north to chapleau.

    • @differentfins
      @differentfins Місяць тому

      I know a few older Canucks that still call walleye pickerel, I love correcting them because they don't know a pickerel is a member of the esox or pike family. I have been mostly getting away with a heavier fluorocarbon leader and haven't had a pike slice one yet! In clear water, they also catch more fish than a steel leader. A lot of people I know growing up think they know everything about fishing because they use jig and minnow and know a few holes... very one dimensional, but yeah it works. I like the plastics like Gulp simply because it's cheaper (per fish caught) and I don't need to keep anything alive, which gets difficult during hot summer days. I hope you get back to Chapleau one day and let me know if you ever get to Manitoba and fish one of those rivers. I want to hear the stories!

    instead of gulp i use twister tales. white and yellow work well and they are cheaper than gulp.

    • @differentfins
      @differentfins Місяць тому

      It's all I used growing up and yes they will catch fish and cost less but what I really love about Gulp is they are biodegradable. If they rip off or a fish swallows them, it dies no harm. People around here still use minnows for the most part. $6 per dozen and you burn through them quick if the fishing is good or lots of snags. People often buy 3 dozen minnows for a single fishing trip. I'll pay $10 for a pack of Gulp and it lasts me several days of fishing.

    i like shore fishing on a good river, you never know what you are going to catch. what would be a good central location to stay at in manitoba so a person could fish a few different rivers. thank's from kalamazoo michigan.

      The two largest river systems with the most diversity are the Assiniboine and Red River. Both located close to Winnipeg, but I would recommend one of the smaller towns. Winnipeg is the Chicago of Canada. Lots of crime, not too nice is some areas. This spot I fished, in Portage La Prairie, is about an hour drive west of Winnipeg and Lockport, MB on the Red River is a great shore spot. If you want big channel cats it is the spot. On a good day you can catch 20-30 of them. Average size about 15 pounds with a legitimate shot at a 25-30 pounder.
