I Replaced My Friend's WORN OUT Wallet with a Handcrafted Version!
Hello and welcome to another leather crafting tutorial. In today’s video, I’ll be sharing the process of creating the most challenging wallet I’ve crafted so far, along with the mistakes I encountered along the way. This will give you insight into what you might face with similar complex projects.
About a month ago, a friend of mine asked me to replicate a wallet he bought in Italy years ago. He loved this wallet so much that he wanted a brand new version that could withstand years of daily use. His request was to make it as close to the original as possible, maintaining the same texture and colors.
What made this wallet especially challenging was its unique card slot configuration and the need to keep it as thin as possible while lining each slot with leather. However, I’m grateful for this experience, as it pushed my leather crafting skills to new levels and gave me the chance to show you how to handle complex pieces like this one.
For this project, I used Badalassi Carlo Minerva Box leather, which is a vegetable-tanned leather. This means the wallet will develop a beautiful patina over time with use. Since I used different colors for each layer, each card slot will age uniquely, adding character to the wallet.
This is actually the first of two identical wallets I’m making. The second one will be made entirely in navy leather, with matching stitching and edge paint, so stay tuned for that one as well!
As always, thank you so much for watching. If you enjoyed this video and want to see more leather projects like this, I invite you to subscribe and hit the notification bell to be the first to know when I post a new video. I regularly share content on leather crafting projects, product reviews, and much more.
Thanks again for watching, and I’ll see you in the next one. Have a great day!
- David

    I picked one of these up last fall and I really like it. My only complaint is that I've got two cards in each slot and after they've been in there for a while it's really hard to get them out. Once I take them out and slide them back in they move around easily... until a couple hours later and I'm back to square one.

    What a unique design. Does this style have a name. Also, I noticed your buckle pin holes run close to the working end of the belt as well. I enjoyed watching

      Hi! Thank you so much for your kind words. The belt style doesn't have a specific name, but the buckle holes are indeed closer to the tip end of the belt, and they're placed closely together to offer comfort and adjustability in wear. This belt leans towards a more casual style because its details are larger compared to those of a formal belt. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

    • @dagsleather
      @dagsleather 4 місяці тому

      Many thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Sewing isn't hard; it just takes some time to complete each stitching run, especially if you're working with thinner threads. If you're starting on hand stitching, I suggest trying it out first with some scrap pieces of leather and repeating the exact movement for each stitch while moving forward. This will help you achieve consistent results with each new stitch you make. Good luck!

    Nice work. May I know what glue do you use that you can just use the hand to apply it ? Is it strong and permanent ?

    • @dagsleather
      @dagsleather Рік тому

      Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. The glue I use in this video is actually used in shoe crafting, it's called Balco. I haven't found this glue on the Internet but it's similar to a contact cement. I bought mine from a local leather shop. In small pieces like handle loops it can hold pretty decent if you let both leathers pressed while the glue is drying. For larger pieces like a card holder and beyond, I do suggest you stitch it. However, I'm switching to a new glue which is water based called Aquilim 315 because this Balco one has a strong smell after working with it for a while. Hope it helps!

    • @journeywithin6274
      @journeywithin6274 Рік тому

      @@dagsleather Thanks for sharing. I heard of Aquilim 315. I am a bit hesitate to use water-based glue. I worry the edges will be loosen and crack after a while if the glue is not strong even it is held tight by the stitches. The keychain or wallet may not look good over time. Perhaps you may consider to share your experience of different glue you use in the near future, their strength and weakness. I do enjoy your videos and quality works.

    • @dagsleather
      @dagsleather Рік тому

      Hi Andrew, that's right, for this wallet I used 4 times the total length of the stitching run but I always add around 20 cm or 8 inches extra to handle the needles comfortably in the end. The thickness of this wallet opened is 5 mm, anything thicker I would suggest you multiply the run by 5 to ensure there's enough thread for your projects.

    • @dagsleather
      @dagsleather Рік тому

      Hi! You can also add beeswax to the edges and polish the wax with a wooden edge slicker. It leaves the edge with a matte-like feel and slightly dull appearance compared to the polishing gum. Just rub some beeswax on the edge you wish to polish and then with the slicker apply some friction and remove the excess with a clean cloth. If you don't have some wax at hand you can polish the edge with water and rub it with an edge slicker or a small piece of wood. It also gives a nice finish.
