SHEP CHILDHOOD HOME HISTORIC PRESERVATION ANNOUNCEMENT
It is not possible to describe "Shep" to anyone who was not there, all those years ago, listening to him telling stories with multiple meanings, playing his kazoo, explaining basic life, thriwing out " what ifs",analyzing the current events, and singing along with obscure music....you needed to have been there...and all of you who weren't there will never really know the magic that he brought, and, are much poorer for not experiencing his genius.
This should be interesting.📻
I’m brand new to all of this. Avid fan of A Christmas Story but never took the deep dive into the world of Jean Shepherd until recently. The man was incredible
You really need to buckle down and get that documentary finished. I used to watch several YT channels that posted his radio shows but after a few years, I honestly got tired of them. I liked his funny stories but his "opinion pieces" quickly got tiresome. I mean a person can only be interested in a specific subject for only so long before moving onto the next thing. A lot of the older generation has been dying off that used to listen to his broadcasts so that's why I suggest you get this documentary done before there's no one left that will care about it.
agreed ....... EXCELSIOR!!!
Interesting story, but I don’t think Kubrick had a brain tumour and my understanding is that his death was very sudden and unexpected.
A real pity that these shows haven't been released to video and/or its web archive by PBS. I do cringe at how Shep was noticeably letting himself go by this time; not a healthy look.
Would love to see these and Jean Shepherd's America re-released properly someday.
Did this series air anywhere else besides New Jersey?
Not that we are aware of. Here from Flick Lives: www.flicklives.com/index.php?pg=241&recno=3928&series=Shepherds%20Pie
@@JeanParkerShepherd ok thanks. That link just has a list of the episodes and not the actual shows.
I HAD that poster in my room. Bought it at the 8th Street Bookstore. Owned by Sean Wikentz’s father. Love Shep.
I was a Boyscout in the early 70’s and we used to listen to Mr. Shepherd from WOR broadcasts. We’d be weekend camping at our local scout camp and always packed 9 volt batteries with Sony - style AM radios. Nothing better than a campfire, in the woods with tents surrounding , a full belly of cast iron skillet cooked chili, biscuits, and listening to him. I’m glad the internet has preserved records of his voice and stories.
Ditto
A statue of Shep should be installed in Hammond, at the WOR studios
I'm so happy to find this here 😊 I came looking for it after listening to Shep at the Brass Figlagee, the episode where he brings the soundtrack to the film and plays music from it and talks about the experience.
This may be a good video however the volume of the background music makes it too difficult to understand the dialog.
Fascinating
IIRC, Fred Barzyk was Shep’s producer, either on WOR 710, or his TV efforts. Shep’s radio program, Mad Magazine and the National Lampoon shaped my formative noggin, and I manifest those influences to this day on my non-commercial FM radio show. I laugh at my own jokes, I deliberately shuffle papers on mic, and occasionally veer off-topic when the impulse strikes me. So in conclusion I say to you, Excelsior, you fatheads!
Growing up in Fairfield County, I was a listener all through high school, I taped many of his shows on WOR. I have an autographed napkin from one of Shep's appearances in NYC to promote In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash, that my buddy got for me when I could'nt attend. I still listen to my recordings of his shows, he was one of a kind.
Are we going to see this documentary soon? I would love to see it. Shep was amazing! Growing up in NJ, I loved when he did Shepard's Pie.
I think Shep was wise not to do HAL.
The Parade scene was filmed in Belmont Massachusetts . I was there . My dad had a Bike shop and provided the big wheel bike in the movie and those overhead wires the baton was being thrown in were actually electric trackless trollies wires. It was hot out that day .. I was 15
5:20 Which are you, folks.
Thx!
73 OM dit dit
Does the actual documentary flip rapidly between all these interviews? I hate this
no ....doc is much different. it is edited this way to keep the freeloaders away :) Excelsior!
@@JeanParkerShepherd thanks!
Shepherd had children. I almost wish I did not know this. From what I have read, he denied their existence. That is quite a character stain. So cruel.
His son Randall was victim to that cruelty
Shep was a special guy. I still miss him and always hoped I could know him personally. I met him once when we arranged for him to appear at a City College function. After he spoke to the crowd he asked for questions. I asked him who he admired and he answered that he know a lot of people who I didn't know but the next morning on his Saturday radio show, he described that the previous night at City College, some kid asked him who had the most influence on his life and his answer then was "probably Laurel and Hardy". I got my answer and even more about how to find life interesting and enjoyable from my many hours of listening to him. He was the same in the car as he was on the air. I once wrote him a letter suggesting he have himself frozen using cryonics as I was planning for myself but never received an answer. At least we have UA-cam memories of him. Excelsior you fathead for sure.
I discovered Jean “ Shep” in the late 1950’s as a teen in high school. I traveled to the village in NYC and subscribed to the “Village Voice”. I was HIP man. Jean took me on a mental magic carpet ride as I layer alone on my bunk during the hot Summer nights. He was my radio hero , I was a HAM Operator too in our coal bin in my moms cellar. Jean made me think and taught me how to write my events and feelings. His Army life paralleled mine during Nam. His HAM experiences encouraged me to be me. I never knew satire. I am that story teller today in my 80’s having published only one book , but printed many of my stories in the valley Gazette. However Electronics was my life not literature , acting or broadcasting although I was the station engineer for WJJZ 1469 on the radio dial. The JJX towers and transmitter were anchored to the sand on an island in the middle of the Delaware River. Early in life I also worked in a US steel mill on that same river. I lasted one week and ran back to the teaching classroom at RCA for FCC License Test Taking Examinations . What a ride. Thanks Jean!
James Broderick was wonderful as the Old Man!
Hope this sees the light of day, lots of great guests on board
this is the year!
I learned to eat Pizza continental style with an upside down fork and a knife. Any other way is un- culture down. You eat with your fingers !
The less garbage on a pizza the better. More does not make better. Make mine plain with a thin crust. Still I would eat a slice of garbage pizza. Typical America way to ruin a good simple food.
European pizza eh not a so good as NYC pizza.
Brookahleen Pizza da best
Paris has some of the best pizzas
23:40 - "And above them a sign read "Get More Out of Life - Go To a Movie!" That's a curious theological thought: Get more out of existence, watching other people, living an existence that they themselves never lived - that was pretended and written by a writer, who never lived it either!" Shep is timeless.
11:22 - Barzyk does a good impression of Shep😂
Time frame here: Kubrick died in 1999. Fascinating account of Shep coming close to doing the voice of "Hal" the computer (turned it down) on Kubrick's 2001.
I can't explain the joy I've found in discovering Jean I watched his movie A Christmas Story and thought a person so descriptive and enthusiastic in the narration simply MUST have more to say, and HOT BANANAS I was right‼️ I UA-cam'd search Jean Shepherd and found all these wonderful things from movies TV and radio! It's so nice to hear an educated person talk to me as a educated person. Because I'am! Take that today's blah radio! Excelsior ‼️
Jean Shepherd’s storytelling inspired me to try a career at the same avocation. I enjoyed the endeavor and had some success at open mic nights and in print. I also learned how difficult it is to sustain success at that field, and I came away with greater appreciation of Jean’s skill.
Whatever happened to this project?
I remember as a ten year old, listening to Gene Shepherd when I was at sleep away camp. The show didn't go on until 11pm, and I stayed up to listen to it.
I’ve lived in New Jersey my whole life over 65 years now and these dang circles have nearly shaved off many of those years…🤣😂!! Whenever I can I try to avoid them if possible! Shep hit the bullseye in describing it so accurately!😂👍🏼.
Thank you for posting these. Just wonderful.
He was in Paris and wanted pizza so he flew to New Jersey. Or he could have, you know, flown to Italy which literally borders France! Haha 😂 🍕
Lois Nettleton was a babe!
I first heard Shep as a fourth grader in 1969 on WOR on Long Island . When I told my mom about my discovery the next day she told me that my dad listened to him all the time. And I later found out my grandfather listened to him as well. And I started listening to him whenever I could on my little portable radio. I got my best friend hooked on him and continued hearing him nightly until WOR cancelled his show in 1977. I also read all his books and articles in my dad’s copies of Car & Driver. And the PBS movies. And, of course “A Christmas Story.” Only met him once at a book signing for “Ferrari in the Bedroom” at Alexander’s.
From my own experience, Shep and Bill Moyers were the best observers and explainers of how modern mans media does business and, by extension, what it does to people. I learned more about this from both of them than anyone else.
Two of my favorites. Listening to Shep explain the subject at hand with absolute rich detail and enjoying a slice of Chicago Pizza with an ice cold beer. Life is good indeed!
As a new Shep fan everyday I’m learning about how influential this guy was and how connected he is to so many things. Thank you for this video. I don’t know how many people know about this but I’m glad to be one of them
I loved these two hosts. Barry looks bad, but his voice is still strong.
I'm a HUGE fan of Jean Shepherd. Love all his work.
