"John Parker was the one that really introduced the handing over of power from the executive office to the elected representatives, in other words, the legislative assembly," said former colleague Jake Ootes. Parker died in Sidney, B.C., on Monday. He was 91. Parker took over the job from the charismatic Stuart Hodgson. "When Stu left, a lot of people thought they'd be leaving a vacuum in the territories, but it didn't happen," said Bob Pilot, who worked as Parker's deputy commissioner. John Parker is an honourable man who made a huge contribution to the political development of the NWT. As one who worked for the NWT government during John's tenure as Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner I can attest to his practical approach to solving the many problems that had to be addressed. In addition to being a first class administrator, John had a delightful sense of humour, and a real concern for the well-being of government employees. Helen Parker deserves mention as a delightful lady, always approachable and cheerful, and at John's side through thick and thin. The people of the NWT were enriched by the contributions of John and Helen Parker. Thank you both. Michael Hewitt.
