Get a couple of horn loaded subs. The boxes are big, but so is the output
"every man's end game sub is another's entry sub" I want to experience the system where the Ascendo The 80 Sub is considered entry level.
PSA is using B&C for the 18" sealed I have. Silent as a mouse fart in church. Flat down to 7Hz in room. Beyond ref volume (4 drivers).
This is why I love sealed subs. May I ask which model do you have?

@ Thanks!
The focus hunting is really distracting. With a talking head video there's no reason to even use auto focus. Set a decent fstop for a foot of depth of field, set manual focus and done.
It’s really not that simple. You can’t set manual focus by yourself in this situation. The camera is broken. Sony sent me new cameras to try and I’ll be getting one of them soon as the new replacement.
@@PoesAcoustics Yes, it is that simple, you are overthinking it. I've done it for 15 years, thousands of videos on my channels. Setup the camera, put it in auto focus mode, put something in your seat in place of your head (or have someone else press to focus on you). Focus, then set to manual to hold it. Look at your screen to see where the focus point is, remember it and set there manually each time (assuming you put the camera in the same spot each time. It's a one time 30 second setup. Done.
Mach 5 audio Canadain company, Has 18, 21, 24, 32, inch subs There is a 24" motor available on the 18s and 21s !!
I had tv2112 and tv1813 from PSA....I would instead go for JTR either CAP 2400 or 4000. That should be end game for most of us. JTR just had a lot more grunt and "violence" than the PSAs I had. The tactile is more pronounced with JTR no question Pura Vida
Thank you for your input. How about the Captivator RS1? Have you tested it? I have a preference for sealed subs.
@FadriqueFM I have not tested that one but I do enjoy sealed subs as well and from the measurements it should be a fantastic performer as well
Well jtr cost twice has much has psa and their price will go up even more
@@gufiaito69able superior performance costs more but in this case is well worth it if the person can afford it.

Thank you for your great answer Matt, awesome video quality btw. And hell yes to a Poesacoustic Costa Rica branch hehe
Camera is great !
Great explanation, and the camera is nice, but not something that makes me like your videos more than before- as long as audio is clear( and it is) the content to me is most important
Sir, your channel is fantastic and offers a wealth of tips that every audiophile would find valuable. However, subscribing to your channel has been a frustrating experience. While you post excellent pictures, they often lack detailed information or follow-up images. Additionally, your website appears to still be under construction, with limited information available. For instance, I had to request information just to get pricing on a projector or sound processor. Your shorts on soundproofing are great, but they lack the necessary details to be truly useful. I would encourage you to reconsider your business model.
Thanks for the video Matt! Re camera, I don't have a strong comment...watching on my phone I think you looked fine with old camera setup. I do have a comment on lighting, however. I preferred the lighting where I could see more of your home theatre...just my thoughts.
Great video! I've got some experience with that cam. It's great. Especially at the price. Perhaps consider moving your light further off center. Knock some light off your shirt, or wear a darker one.
Camera does look better. IMO don't think video quality is that important due to most if not all of your video content is done by audio. Like a podcast that is quick and on UA-cam platform. I do see the argument of professional presentation. Some may see the quality of video as an indication of the quality of your service. Summary: Doesn't make a difference to me, but may to others.
Personally I think both are way too large for home use. Have had many subwoofers, 300 watt 12" is more than enough. If more bass is important to you, then go for it.
Define home use
Somehow I don't think a 12" 300watt sub is going to do squat in my 6000cuft room.
Is there a limit to overkill? With ascendo the 32" which I am considering, is recommended from 60hz and under. Although it can do higher in Hz, why don't they recommend using it that way?
i have no technical answer but i experienced multiple 32" setups and ways how it was integrated in the system. The best sounding setup was always a steep crossover to other subwoofers and not running the 32" fullrange. i use mine like that as well, just as infrasonic sub and xover is 1st room mode around 29hz to the other 12x 18" subs
@@patrickmartin4482 I could be wrong, my guess is it doesn't have the transient response capability due to moving mass (I forget the q parameter for control) to work the best at those higher frequencies. Maybe Mr Poes has a more accurate explanation.
Also, having oversized equipment like subs and amplifiers simply adds to the units' longevity and reliability ... heat and stress are big killers for car engines and audio-visual equipment alike.
Loaner camera looks really good, better than ever in fact, you should get it. Go shoot some videos for Gene D. and charge him to help pay for it. Gene's video quality is like from 1980s 😅
Cant be too big theoretically but if you have to hump upstairs yeah maybe there is too big
I'm currently experimenting with flip-stacked JBL 308p in my big media system. I agree, the physics suggests a messy, comb filtered vertical response. But, it works. The active JBL 8" two-way is available at ~$200. It's a good candidate for such an experiment. After several months, I can say the output bonus is quite welcome with no problematic downside. The caveat is listening height. As Matt points out, no getting around the vertical lobing. But with a well controlled ceiling between the listener and mains, combined with listening on center between the waveguides, ... whatever messy lobing is happening seems perfectly acceptable when accompanied by the +6dB theoretical. I put a thin damping layer between cabinets that are weighted from the top. I listen at 9' and tweets are ~6.5" center-to-center. Currently stacked on my Seaton Cat bases, 9' apart, 9' from the couch, and a wonderful 7' off the front wall behind them. Amazing how JBL leveraged their prowess into this dirt cheap $200 box. In my room, my experience the; +6dB > comb filtered mess I suspect if it was already highly capable dynamically/output wise, then maybe it wouldn't be preferable, but I don't know. Perhaps since its so well sorted in the horizontal, one simply hears through the summation challenges in this particular instance.
Poes acoustics forever!
you can listen to reason, or you can work with what you got or experiment with cheap used speakers. flip stack experiments. if i was to attempt flip stack i would modify the top set of speaker, cut the top part just above the midrange, glue a wood panel to cover the hole, tweeter is not disconnected and taken out. if the speaker has the tweeter high on the cabinet it could work good enough.
Flip stacking used to be a thing back in the 70’s. Two roommates each had the popular Advent speakers and they stacked them to pool their resources. They played them very loud in a small room and they thought it sounded great. Then again, they were on drugs.
Hi, I sent you a question about a consultation on your website. Not sure if you received
We received it. We all have been Very busy..... we will reply to your request in an orderly fashion. Thanks
Thanks for that articulate answer. So what still puzzles me, is why doesn’t comb filtering occur with multiple drivers in the sane enclosure/cabinet?
Those drivers can be playing at frequencies low enough where the wavelengths don't interfere with each other. Comb filtering occurs where the wavelengths are short enough that serious phase interference develops between sound emission sources that are producing the same signal. The wavelength of treble frequencies is much shorter than bass frequencies. Bass wavelengths are so long that even the seperation of a couple of feet between bass drivers will not cause a major phase conflict, but that kind of seperation between midrange or tweeter drivers would put the wavelangths many cycles out of phase with each other.
Correct. Under 20hz we can't hear. It's that simple jack.
Really loving hearing you talk about video.
Thanks!
Thank you for your support!
Thanks Matt, very informative as always
You’re welcome.
If your speakers play lower, say to 40 Hz, ported or not if having them play that low along with your subs makes a difference worth having in bass response doesn't that mean your subs aren't capable of doing it on their own? If you're in this situation isn't it best to add subs as you conclude anyway as even if you can achieve the same results with your existing speakers down to 40 Hz surely that means you still have problems below 40 Hz?
It’s more than that. Just because a speaker has a response to 40hz doesn’t mean it will play loudly. It also doesn’t mean the speakers are in a good position for smooth bass. If you want clean smooth bass, especially in multiple seats, 2+ separate subs in strategic locations is generally best.
@PoesAcoustics aye. I think an interesting question is what happens when you use Dirac ART. Sealed speakers Vs ported speakers Vs using smaller subs but having one under every bed layer speaker.
Excellent feedback Matt. Each LCR has a pair of B&C 10” 10NW76 woofers with 800w continuous power handling but relatively high Fs. They are capable of massive output at 45Hz and are integrated beautifully at 80Hz while ported via the Trinnov’s setup. The sealed Fb is about 80Hz. If I experiment going the sealed route I’ll use the active speaker approach in the Trinnov. Thanks for covering so much ground in such a succinct video response!
Hey Matthew, firstly, thanks for the awesome content! Question, when talking about subwoofer integration, notwithstanding the obvious concerns about sub placement, room modes etc. Would you agree that SBIR for the mains, should be top of the list for best crossover point(s)? 2. Even and especially when running mains full range (LFE + Main). I've dabbled (to say the least) and although there is an appreciable, audible difference / improvement at lower listening levels, I find (LFE+ Main) the speakers simply can't manage reference clean output unless crossed over.
Yes and your conclusions make sense.
He is currently talking with the government to have them move two buildings to bring down the noisefloor. Hope you are having a good time Matt. Thanks for all your great videoes. Greetings from Denmark.
Ascendo and Meyer Sound have all ported main speakers, even the Black Swan and the Bluehorn (big enough) are ported and I am sure they know what they are doing. What might be the way and the reason they are doing that ?
It’s a different set of trade offs. They use a driver that couldn’t hit the requisite output at 80hz without the port. I’ve also setup both mentioned systems and there is some time domain problems from the ports. But given the intended use, the tradeoff is acceptable. Distorting and compressing output would be worse. In the pro audio sphere the mindset is different and not everything they believe is correct. For example the pro approach to bass management is to have a dedicated bass management speaker for each channel or channel group. That means the LCRs each get their own bass management speaker. LFE is sent to a separate dedicated speaker. This really is nonsensical in small rooms. Meyer does it. But it is wrong. It comes from the pro cinema world that was in such large rooms that room modes were not a concern. In the small rooms we work in, it makes for more sense to follow the residential standard that THX and Dolby adopted. This mixes the LFE and bass management channels together. Further, we now use multiple subs all sent the same rendered channel in a strategic way to minimize modal problems. So just because a great company does it doesn’t always mean it’s optimal. Often it’s addressing a different problem. Nothing is perfect so you have to pick your battles. Strike a good balance. And sometimes they do it because they don’t know better. Meaning what they do isn’t correct. They are just ill informed. This particular “battle” is one that the residential pros have been fighting with the commercial pros for a while. But the science and physics is on our side.
Subbed. Thanks.
I prefer the attitude of John Hunter at Rel. Their crossover controls are unmarked. Stops you setting the crossover where you think it should be, or where the science suggests it should be. Forces you to set the crossover by ear. Admittedly, it did take me a very long time of trial and error before I knew I’d got it right. But when that happened, it was unmistakable!
You are welcome to use whatever approach you prefer. I don’t happen to agree that blindly setting them based on faulty listening tests would yield the best results. I’ve certainly done this plenty of times and often measuring it will show that it had numerous problems that would be hard to hear, identify, and fix.
If it’s “hard to hear”, is it then of any real concern? I’m not criticising your methodology, just stating what works for me on a more basic level. I am only a 2 channel man, so perhaps don’t face some of the complexities of a multi channel arrangement.
I’ve had good success with sealed. The smaller air volume and careful placement for room boundary gain means tight and articulate bass. The SB Audience 15OB350 15” woofer works wonderfully in a 70L sealed even though it’s an open baffle woofer. It’s not the most dynamic 15” model but the size factor has plenty of headroom compared to a 70L bass reflex using a smaller driver. Enclosure volume almost halves when going sealed.
Matthew, if you've not yet had the opportunity to experience it, I'd strongly suggest you check out Cirque's MJ One, at Mandalay Bay in Vegas. (MJ's music performed live) Pupose built theater just for the show, with a stunningly impressive cost no object sound system and acoustic environment. John Meyer's finest electronics and cabinets. Layers of wonderfully immersive elements thru a proprietary 120 input, 120 output system ... producing nearfield immediacy, bathed in fully dimensional spaciousness and the most satisfyingly mixed kick drum. Dry, clear, hard hiiting bass, and seemingly zero resonant decay comprimise in the performance space. A couple hundred boxes covering the seating, w/LCRs embedded into the seats themselves. All that technical tour de force, serving up one of the best catalogs in popular music, in a live performance. Thanks
Thanks. As long as there isn’t a lower age limit we will have to check that out. My youngest is 4 and we have found it hard to find shows that are not 5+ or more. Vegas is on our soon future vacation lists. We did Thanksgiving there a number of years ago and loved it. Hoping to do that again in the near future. Maybe next year.
@PoesAcoustics Not sure about age restrictions, but it's likely a bit much for little ones. I'm curious about how loud the show is mixed, those Meyer boxes get very loud without distortion ... so it's hard to say. Funny, I intended to grab a look at SPL, and capture the magnitude of the house curve, ... but I was gobsmacked by the sound, the visuals, and most of all the immersion! Never entered my mind! The 90mins flys by and you're quite inspired by the final number is over. Of course I like MJ, but I'd not consider myself a fan. Like every Cirque show we've seen in Vegas, you leave quite impressed. This one, the superbly tuned PA is the star!
Ported subwoofers FOR THE WIN! 🙌🏼❤️❤️
You are welcome to your preferences. That isn’t my preference and certainly not a win for me. I prefer to avoid excessive port chuffing, high group delay, and other inharmonic distortions that ports all produce eventually, always well below the actual SPL limit of the subwoofer.
Matt, I couldn't agree more! While battling with low frequencies in my budget room/gear I'm finding that I go right back to blocking the ports and changing the setting in my SVS PB1000 Pro sub woofer. I keep wanting heavy slam during movies, but the bass just gets sloppy. It also sucks that my MLP is also in a room mode of low bass and I can't do much a about the position because of the room size and Atmos speaker layout. I've tried dual dual subs, but I don't have matching pair and can't afford to get another SVS. I wish I could afford to hire you to come over; even if it's just to listen to my mess and tell me how bad it really is. I'm sure it sucks! Anyway, thanks a million for all you do for us out here and I hope that you have fantastic day, Kevin
Happy Thanksgiving Matt, A few follow up questions please: What problems are inherent to passive radiators? In the GSG Behind The Screen (BTS) 21 inch subwoofer designs the port can be aimed to the side to avoid rippling the screen; Is there a audible reduction in port noise because the port is aimed away from the listener? If a ported sub is tuned at 16Hz and I roll it off above that (maybe 19Hz); is that an effective way of reducing the port issues below audible levels? Thanks very much!
Aiming the port at the floor or wall can reduce the audible onset of port chuffing or other port noise issues. Passive radiators are not as linear as ports. They are more lossy. Think of a PR and a Port as a variation on the same thing. It’s a mass that resonates at a fixed frequency. But imagine they a port is a mass that moves freely. It has no damping or restrictions of its movement. The PR has attached that mass to a suspension and that suspension has losses. It doesn’t allow the free movement of the mass. And so the performance is worse. In addition, the mass and suspension of a PR introduce an additional 5th order topology due to this Fs of the PR. So it also has a steeper rolloff. I should say. There are ways to design ported subwoofers that achieve performance that is a balance between a sealed and ported design. You get some benefits from the port output and excursion control. You also get maximally flat group delay through the passband.
Thanks 4 Giving us your knowledge😁!
Thanks for watching!
Matt! Are you using the buildings for acoustics...Lol!
How does the Neo material compare to Seymour XD? I assume the Neo would offer a sharper image with a slightly lower gain than the XD? Would the Neo be worth the upgrade?
It’s a substantially smoother surface. Less acoustic interaction, better looking image at a closer viewing distance. Not quite as high gain.
Totally agree ref R5 Perlisten over S4. Great video Matt 👍
colors, sharpness and focal length is vastly improved.
Great material, Thank you ! Have you compared it with Slate AT 1.2 or FireHawk Perf? wonder how would you rate this between those two (or actually how do you compare the two I mentioned). thanks again!
That’s a completely different kind of screen. Microperf will have far inferior sound transparency. Those two screens would also have hot spotting. It’s a better option when light control is not possible. In a dedicated room like mine, it makes the most sense to use a screen like I used.
