Hi guys and welcome to my channel where it's all about TRAIL RUNNING, HIKING, TRAINING, and sometimes about TRAVELING.
I'm an Austrian trail runner and mountaineer. My love and passion for the great outdoors was triggered in 2018 and since then I've pushed myself to countless limits which I never thought possible!
After climbing Europe's highest peak in 2020, I've started to focus more on trail running and after completing my first Ultra-Marathon in 2021 (63K and 3,700 HM in Sierra Nevada, Spain) - I absolutely fell in love with this sport!
Now I'm chasing new goals and finding my way in the trail running world.
I'd love to take you along my adventures in the great Austrian Alps.
BASED: Salzburg, Austria
PROJECT UA-cam: May 2022
HIGHEST PEAK: Mont Blanc (4,810 HM) in August 2020
(HALF-) MARATHONS: Trailmarathon, Salzburg Half 2022, Sherry Marathon 2021
ULTRAS: Ultra Sierra Nevada 2021 (63K, 3,700 HM), Hochkönigman (50K, 3,060 HM), Istria 100 2023 (110K, 3,900HM)

Mozart 100 2024. My hometown race. Overall it's the fifth year I've been participating in this competition, but always different distances. This year I wanted to conquer the longest of all races: the 105km distance. And I really thought I could. Even up to the last minutes. Check out this video to find out what happened to me during this ultra race. I didn't see it coming. But I guess the races...
Nike ZOOMX ZEGAMA 2 REVIEW | Trail Running | Shoe review

New year, new Zegamas! The first version of the Nike Zoomx Zegama shoes have been one of my favorite trail shoes ever since they came out. They had a good fit with a bouncy Zoomx midsole, making them a fun trail shoe for the mountains. The only issue I had with them was the slippery outsole on wet terrain. When I heard that the Zegama 2 would get a Vibram outsole, I knew I had to get them and t...

Glad you liked it :) You gonna race Istria100?

Cool video! How about water in your soft-flasks? Is not freezing?
this model of asics it is a disaster. And i am super fun of asics. Why they try to copy hoka and salomon? This is size everest failure.
I started trail running this year. 6.8 miles is the longest I've run on technical trails so far. I use minimalist running shoes. Only because I have weak ankles.
Hey Chris great video! if you're interested you should check out the one I did as well I think you'll get a kick out of it-let me know what you think!
Had them for two weeks and already clocked 100 k in it,love it.ive got a wide foot and it accommodates well…it will be my choice for next week giant causeway ultra…
😂
Nice. Would you happen to know if there beginner to intermediate trail running events (10 to 30k) not too far from linz? Ill be doing a fellowship in linz next year around jan to march so would like to experience the outdoors. I guess it has to be around march though based on your season. Thanks
I was given a pair for review here at UTMB 2024. Just noticed your review. Ha, we see eye to eye (but didn’t have any heel slippage with my lacing method)! This is the review I posted on Strava: Nike gave me the Zagama v2’s to test on this run: The great; 1) Good lockdown with the laces and well cushioned tongue. 2) The built in gaitors worked well and kept out all debris. 3) Great ride, excellent suspension/cushioning! 4) I went up .5 of a size. Toe box was wide and high enough for ultra distance. 5) Grip was fine, not one slip on technical trails. However there were no wet zones on the trail. 6) Stack height is perfect for me. Facilitates great cushioning but still solid ground feel. Any higher I would be concerned about stability and increased risk of ankle roll. Slight negatives; 1) Weight, not the lightest trail shoe but to be fair didn’t notice extra weight probably because of the excellent cushioning. 2) Did one hard rock stub and the rock guard protection was solid. The front of the shoe could do with a little more protection ie widen the rock guard. This would give me more confidence executing side to side running down narrow gullies and in other situations when the probability of striking rocks with the front sides of the shoes is increased.
It does everything great. But i just don’t like the shoe. ( now after a few months in the rotation) Idk why but you know the feeling when you grab your favorite shoes before the run. With this shoe I have the opposite feeling. I liked the first Zegama shoes a lot more. Glad you liked them though!
I am like you and a size 12 in my other shoes. In these, I found the 12 slightly too small in the toe box. Unfortunately there are no half sizes after size 12 so I had to get a 13. These then felt too loose. A real shame as the shoe is otherwise awesome
A fantastic video ! Dad.
Thanks!! See you soon 🙏☺️
Starke Leistung! Gratulation!
Great video Chris, and congratulations again on the race! Looked stunning and that it had everything including the snow to slide down! Everything except a monsoon like in Salzburg! Glad you had a good result! 👏
Thanks a lot Jason 🙏 It was an amazing experience. That day in Salzburg was just crazy. Glad I finished this time. Hope your trail season is going well :))

Mega Chris! Tolles Video! Glückwunsch zu der Leistung!❤🎉

Danke dir! War ein langer Tag…:)

Danke!! Am Abend hat es kurz geregnet…aber nur so 20 min 😅🙏
Tolle Leistung. Gratulation! Wirklich cooles Video, danke fürs Mitnehmen. Macht auf jeden Fall Lust auf lange Strecken!
Thanks a lot! The longer the distance, the bigger the adventure :))
First of all great to see you running again. This was by far a very challenging race. Great effort Dude. Love the footage. Beautiful mountains and stunning views slipping and sliding all over the snowfields… that was fun. Hope you enjoyed your well earned After-Race beer ;-) Keep on….
Thanks a lot! This was a very beautiful trail. Def want to come back again. Had a lot of beer the last 2 weeks 😅 🍺
Hi Chris how long does it take to hike up to top me and bf going to Salzburg in September he not keen on cable car thanks
Really depends. About 4 hours for the average hiker.
@@chris.schmied thank you Chris for your information I be going in cable car hoping you well and having great summer
@@chris.schmied have a great day chris greetings from Scotland
@@chris.schmiedDepends! If you‘re Austrian, it‘s way faster. Took me under 2h with my 9 year old son. ;-)
Hi. I’ll be in Austria in a few weeks for work. Can you recommend any trail running groups or tours?
Hey! Sorry…not for trail running.
Where do you park overnight when doing this hike?
There is a dedicated parking lot for this hut. Takes about 30 min to drive up from the valley. A bit off-road. You don’t need a four wheeler. But I wouldn’t drive up w a sports car.
@@chris.schmiedThank you … you’ve inspired us to take this hike soon.
Yeah and yah
Thanks for tips ,doing my second trail today 8k but i have learned new things here🤗 good day sir
Glad you found it helpful :)) Enjoy the trails ⛰️💪
how about wearing this one for 50k-70k ? can i have an advise, im using Altra Olympus 5 for more than 600km including 3 70k race and now looking for something new
Very good shoe as long as the trails are dry. Even for the ultra distance. Better than version 2.
You say about heel slippage but you haven’t laced them with the runners loop which stops this
Thanks for the advice !
hi buddy, i m wondering if i should for this or hoka mafate any idea ? Im coming from saucony xodus ultra i like them, but i want to change brand just to try something new ! :)
Do you want to do faster runs or long trails? I would go w the Mafate. They are a bit better for long distances. ( in my opinion )
@@chris.schmied Ty bud yep i prefer focus on confort first :)
Thanks for the tips 😊
Glad you found them helpful :))
I know it must have been tough to being close to the finish but still far. It happened to me not long ago with a shorter distance (42km 2800+) when I had only left 10k to go but I had to pull the plug. Weather was very hot that day, wish I had some rain hehe. Hope the recovery went well and go back to your regular training. Sure next year you will redeem yourself. Cheers!
Took me about 14h and change to finish the race and I don’t understand how can you say that it was really good job from organizers, it’s beyond me. Absolutely zero preparation for the weather, non of the aid stations had shelter, place to worm up or anything like that. I found a shelter at the 3rd aid station in some farmers garage and layered up, probably this move saved me. I saw people quitting and still had to wait outside in the rain for the buses for few hours. There was only one place in the second aid station to fill up the water ONE tap and probably 100 runners. St Gilet had no place to sit even :D. Lots of people take ultra running as a hype that was clear, vast majority was underprepared.
Great job on your finish! Especially in that time and those conditions. 💪 Now that you mention it, i have to agree with you on the shelter situation. I had to take shelter in some storage room. It wasn’t even warm and almost no space to sit. Some Ultra races I’ve done in the past had tents with heating lamps, even when the weather was actually good. This would have helped a lot of runners that day. ( or all )
@@chris.schmied It probably would have helped you a lot. I was 17th at the one moment and started to shake just like you, had 15 km till finish, wanted to quit, but guys at the aid station said I have to wait for a bus maybe 1,5h, so I figured it was about the same to finish. There was no shelter by the way! So i filled my two bottles with hot tea and wrapped my self in the safety blanket! That’s haw i got to the finish.. Good God what a nightmare that was, still shaking.
Definitely would have helped. Just need to look forward now. Hope you also have another race this season you can hopefully enjoy :)
That was a tough day. That freezing side wind in the mountain uphill almost killed all. Almost 70 DNFs in the next checkpoint says everything. You did great with 88km, I screwed it in km 50. Salzburg 2025, the revenge 👊🏼
My knees and hands were hurting from the cold. I couldn’t fuel for a bit cause my mouth was so numb. That was a very hard section. Hopefully you will have a better run next time!
Hey Chris. Thanks for the effort. Looking forward to seeing you finish in 2025
Thanks Steve! We will see what happens in 2025 :)
10:48 when you say it wasnt much, i think you totally missed the hardest part. It was not going up, but coming down from Koppl. Not sure you would have seen it anyway because they rerouted part of the race, but coming down from there... you had to cross some rivers coming down on tree roots, there was so much water... ankles were twisting left and right 😅
I heard that it would have gotten a lot worse. Crazy conditions!
Great video Chris, conditions where really hard. You have my Respect reaching so far on those muddy trails and the horrible weather
Thanks a lot! Wish I could have gone further!
Hey. I finished the Mozart100 and it was the hardest race I've ever finished! I also felt cold and it takes me 5 - 10 minutes after every aid station to feel warm again. All the best, I hope you feel well again, Hannes
Thanks Hannes! Congratulations on your finish! You did a good job in keeping warm 💪👌
Great video Chris! It made me relive the whole day 😅 Also sad about the DNF after 85 km, but we will go for revenge next year 😉🤞👍
Thanks Jan!! Was nice to meet you. Hopefully next time under different circumstances! 😅 Definitely a revenge run next year ⚔️ Have a great trail season ⛰️💪
Danke Tom! Bin sehr froh über die Entscheidung. Mann lernt immer dazu und freu mich schon aufs nächste rennen! Bis bald ⛰️💪
Great video again Chris, sorry to see the DNF, but as a first time Mozart Light runner this year, even on our bit of the course the mud and conditions were unbelievable, downhills were so difficult, and it was a long time to be out in those weather conditions. - good to see you in good spirits at the end a few days later, despite the DNF thats an amazing distance on that terrain - maybe see you there next year as well!
Yes! Can only look forward and be glad that we are healthy and keep on training 💪🙏
Very well done Chris! A tough, tough day this year. Lessons learnt that will help us all in the future. Keep the videos coming and all the best ..Cheers 👍😃
Thanks Davey! Definitely learned a lot!
Respect for the effort! I made it to 32km where i missed the cutoff, due to underestimating the mud. I was freezing my butt off too. It looks like you could have profiteered from warmer clothes right off the start! I know i needed more insulation and rainprotection definetely. Anyways, see you there next year!
I did 80k in T-shirt with waterproof jacket on. Somehow I was never cold, only problem was when I broke my pole on first descent, because I always run with poles. It was harder after that, but managed under 11 and half hours. Last part that you didn't have to run was really sketchy and dangerous. Slippery, narrow trail with raging water below...
@@sip5123 the 80km were the last 80km of the 100, right? I heard they installed a rope after nockstein, that's how bad it was! Did you have warm pants at least? I hope i never break my poles! Beware of the carbon, the splinters are very nasty and i was told they can cause cancer.
Thanks!! We will make it next year 💪⛰️
@@leonda4817Yes and by looking at the footage first 20 wasn't that bad, it only got worse with every hour and kilometer. Crazy that they let smaller distances even start. I've had my thighs I've used all winter, maybe running in snow helped.😅 But they were totally soaked very soon, I need to get something waterproof. Thanks for the warning about carbon, luckily it was a clean break and I've already ordered new ones.
@@chris.schmied We will for sure, and even better prepared!
Btw, have you considered resoling shoes? Some people have them resoled with a vibram zegama before they even break them in. Resoling can be a diy project for people with a belt sander (<30euros). If you have them done professionally, you're looking at <70eu. That should give 300km+ extra, with a superior outsole to begin with. So roughly 50% more shoelife, which pays off for a shoe that costs 160eu. The vibram zegama should perform a lot better over the whole life of the shoe too, with barely any wear until the end.
If this has too much stack height for you, you might love the torrents?! They are my all-time favourite shoes. The toebox is pretty roomy, so you can easily add an insole for added cushioning.
Amazing video, will be trekking from La Spezia to Levanto soon and this was great for our preparation 🤩
Thanks a lot Kim :) It’s a really beautiful trail. You will love it!
Hi, Chris, what about salt. Did you ever had some troubles with your wades? Then some salt should help. Do you have some tips about consuming salt tablets during a race? Thank you in advance. 😀
I don’t take salt tablets. I consume salt at the aid stations. Usually w some tomatoes or crackers.
Do you recommend Underberg or Schafberg? At least the view from Schafberg looks better?
The view from Schafberg is amazing. I prefer Untersberg bec of the alpine feeling you get there. Less crowds and steeper climbs. Difficult choice.
Actually, it is hard to find a mountain in this region, where you don't have a great view. Untersberg is more difficult, you should have some mountain experience, because most routes have some exposed sections, and tourists tend to underestimate these routes. It is also physically more challenging than Schafberg, but there are also more difficult routes onto Schafberg. So, rule #1 is to really plan your hikes, because it can get quite tricky very fast. Also, do not trust single sources, because often different people will tell you very different things about any mountain 😉
@@chris.schmied It was easier to get to Schafberg with public transport so I went there. However, the hike was mainly forest and car road. So the hike was not so great, but the view at the top was stunning.
You should try The "Columbia escape thrive endure" 👍
Thanks for the advice :) I will check them out!
I love running uphill and taking the flats as rest areas
Nice! I love running downhill :)
One week to go to do the mozart 100 as my first 100km race
How did it go!? I unfortunately had to DNF. Hope you had a good experience
@@chris.schmied Sorry to hear that! Well, i had to DNF too. In Tiefbrunnau, 32km. I missed the cutoff time, because the mud slowed me down way more than expected. I paced reasonably from the beginning (~6:00 min/km, flat terrain), then lost maybe 10min in the traffic jam in glasenbach, at the first singletrail. Beeing at the back of the pack, all the singletrails were a huge mess already. However I did fairly well and only after Hof-aidstation i realized that the cutoff could be dangerous to me. Filbling-mountain was a complete disaster then and i had huge problems with the mud. It was barely walkable and i lost so much time, despite feeling fit and motivated. The cold wind was really harsh and i have to admit that i was ill-prepared and freezing pretty badly. I slipped out in the mud and had a crazy calf-cramp! Then i arrived too late and got drawn out of the race. Half of the runners there where surprised they didn't even make the cutoff, because they felt they were doing ok for a 100k race. The cutoff was pretty unfair IMHO, as the 5 hours are reaonable for good conditions, but more on the tight side. Mid-pack runners who paced conservatively/reasonable in the beginning didn't make it that day. If anything, the cutoff in tiefbrunnau tempted people to rush the slippy downhill down. Anyways, it was a great experience nonetheless and i learned a lot! As a consequence, i bought some quality raingear from compressport and merino socks and longsleeves. I'm now motivated to train in the rain, which i tended to avoid previously. Another upside is, i get another year of good training before finishing my first 100km race. So i can aim for a good time, while having a good time ;) How was the race for you?
I hear the toebox is even less accommodating then V1.
I’m afraid it is. Not by much.
