can this regulator be adjusted at all
@@davesanderson703 Yes of course it can. Most regulators of this kind can be adjusted either to a sweet spot which on mine is 10.7ftlb which gives me deadly accuracy up to 40m, or up to illegal power. I'm not going to say how because I don't want to help anyone to do the latter.
@@noskanow ah right ok that was my next question on how do i adjust it just mines firing at 9.3 ft
@@davesanderson703 Sorry, But I'm not going to say on here how to adjust the power.
I have a YDS 120. It is a great investment for any sax player. I love the fact that you can practice in private anywhere. Once amplified the sound is of great quality. As a saxophone player for the last 51 years I give it two thumbs up!!
fab i csn fix mine now
Please tell me the o ring size.
You don't need to know O ring sizes. Buy the complete set and replace them size for size as you go. spares.bagnallandkirkwood.co.uk/product/walther-rotek-rotex-rm8-full-o-ring-seal-kit/
Thank you
Can you play any of the sax voices in concert pitch? Thanks
Don't think so, and you can't use the tuning function because it hasn't got the range to pull transposing saxes into concert pitch. Good point though, it seems like a C Melody sax isn't catered for.
Using the YDS Controller program installed on your smartphone, you can transpose the sound to any key and save it in the instrument’s memory. I created user instruments for playing the soprano in concert pitch.
That is a shame. With the work you have done on it, you might as well go the extra step and put a proper hobby grade receiver in there and a couple of cheap ESCs. Maybe even an internal motor and a rudder.
Yes I might get round to doing that. It's down to the motors and props on this little model, they're not up to what I'm asking of them. Nothing here has cost anything though, all the voltage reg parts were in my bits and bobs box, and it's only cost a couple of hours in time, so disappointing for sure but not shedding any tears over it! My 'Nessie' models has packed up which was my main concern to be honest and it looks like the ESC has died so want to get that fixed now.
beautiful
A very elegant solution 👍 Looking forward to seeing it on the water 👍
Thank you. I've bought a 4S 1000mAh lipo which fits in the boat and as a bonus it weighs about the same as the AA pack. So off to the boating lake on Sunday when my club is having a RC boat day and there'll be everything from the Titanic to submarines, so they may need a lifeboat! I'll tweak the voltage while I'm there hopefully to get a nice bow wave going and I'll post the video when it's done.
@noskanow I was going to suggest making your own from Vape batteries, although there are less laying around nowadays.
Hi Peter thanks for making this I did the same repair on my md2b but the water seal keeps working itself out of place and then the pump leaks have you had this problem ? Thanks
No I haven't. Theses seals were a really tight fit and I didn't put any lubrication on, they went in dry.
Hi Peter, thanks for the great Video. Unfortunately i've taken the securing pin out but the barrel won't budge. it will turn a half turn but absolutely no forward movement, any ideas mate.
Not really. There are just two O rings on the barrel which should pull out under moderate pressure. You might try putting a couple of drops of silicone oil around the joint and leaving it upright to seep in for an hour. As far as I know the barrel should just pull out, there are no other restraining mechanisms, just the pin you've knocked out.
@@noskanow Thanks for the reply Peter, I thought as much, I'll give the oil a go, thanks again.
Peter where on earth do you get the little drelin washer seal inside the regulator? i can't find anywhere to get one and have a leaking gun.
Sorry, I'm afraid I don't know what you're referring to.
Nice explanation. One question - how do I connect it to VL70m ? Is there any midi out like wx7 or wx5 etc?
I had a VL70m back in the '90s and from what I remember I don't see how it could be connected to it. There's no MIDI out from the YDS120 and there are only two ways into it. There's an AUX IN 3.5mm jack plug and as far as I can tell all that does is play an audio input over the internal speaker or headphones. The other way in is via the micro USB connector and this is used to connect to a device which is running the YDS120 App produced by Yamaha and available from Play Store. I've got the app on my mobile phone and when connected it allows you amongst several other things to load synth voices into the custom voice slots. I haven't explored that function because I'm not interested in doing that and I think it's pretty restricted for the kinds of things you're looking to do with it.
I got it. Thanks for your response. It does not have any Bluetooth either. I think Yamaha really need to think about their products . Have a good day Sir.
To connect the YDS 120 to the VL70m you need the USB to MIDI interface. I am using KENTON (MIDI USB HOST). Set the display to CRL mode. Connect the USB output of YDS 120 to the USB input of the interface. Using a MIDI cable, connect the MIDI output of the interface to the MIDI input of the VL70m. Perform transposition on VL70m
@@ewitor9547thanks this really helps
Great review! I just got one. I‘m a guitarist/singer and don’t play the sax yet but I have a list of about 20 songs I intend to learn to play while backing myself with my guitar with the help of a looper. I‘m going to busk and and play cafés and restaurants and small gigs with it which makes its‘ sonic versatility very handy. It’s also great for practicing at any time of the day with earphones in an apartment, a bus, a train, a plane, an airport.... An enormously practical tool!
Good luck!
Apologies to viewers, I had a bit of brain fog during this video. The last of the functions you can set up is REVERB, not vibrato as I said. Vibrato is fixed and can't be changed but if you want to sound like you're playing in a cathedral, turn up the REVERB setting!
Great video thanks. I have had my YDS120 for just over a week now. There is so much that I love about up, but THE most annoying thing, and U am wondering if it is just me, as I have little hands, is the octave key.! If I don’t have the sax resting on my leg when I play, I am finding that the sax seems to want to turn and so I find it extremely difficult to keep the octave key on. Especially if I am using my palm keys the come back down onto the higher register of c,b and a, I have to REALLY press the octave key. It is so frustrating, because apart from that, the sax does exactly what I hoped it would do. Any advice please?
Yes I too found the octave key a bit troublesome initially. It's positioned about 45 degrees right of centre and even though it's 20mm long it has to be pressed in the middle to activate its digital switch, if the octave touch piece is pressed at its ends the digital switch will not activate. This means that your thumb must be a long way over to the right all the time and I sometimes failed to activate it until I got used to it. It's just a case of being aware of this feature and working with it in the same way you might have to do with a new acoustic saxophone, you have to get used to it.
@@noskanow thanks for that and yes I will persevere because I do love it. Just a shame that Yamaha never thought of improving it after the YDS150. Especially something so crucial as that! Happy playing.
A very useful review, thanks ! 😽
This is the best review I’ve seen of the yds120. Thank you!
Thanks glad you like it.
thanks for the video! i recently bought one of these for study at night!
Good luck with your studying. I didn't mention in the video but headphones work very well with it.
Another comment regarding the rebuild. I recommend using loctite 572 thread sealant on the regulator cap. It's a proper gas sealant rather than a threadlock. My first attempt with regular loctite 243 blue threadlock didn't hold up under pressure. The 572 has to be cured for 48hrs or so, but it fills the relatively coarse threads and does the job. It's also easy to disassemble again. I rebuilt my Varmint in 2020 and it's shot 11.4 - 11.5 ftlb consistently ever since.
Thanks Andy, fair point and good suggestion if anyone has to buy the thread locker/sealant. I happened to have a bottle of Loctite thread lock so used it and the gun is still leak free, but as you say, getting the reg cap off again if required might be a struggle!
Hello Peter. I have the same problem with my RM8. Would you help me change the O rings please or do you recommend someone near London that can help? Thank you
I am not a professional, insured repairer and therefore would never work on anyone else's air rifle even if I could. If you don't feel confident enough to do this yourself then my advice is don't ask a non professional to do it for you. If you don't want to do this yourself my very strong advice is to take or send your gun to a registered professional repairer in your area and I've just done an Internet search and found 10 of them in and around London. Good luck.
Thank you Peter
Great video just brought one myself I like your sling 👍

Thanks so much.
I noticed the lenses didn't have blackened edges, I don't know if you blackened them, if not, you should. I've done this, by using a black, permanent marker to just give them a few coats, it really helps contrast. I've also done this on my eyepieces which didn't have blackened edges. You can get certain paints that would work, but I've had good results with a black marker.
I have the mechanical capability of a dead slug. You are very brave.
Thanks 👍
Cracking little gun. Great video. Do you know how to up the power
You remember those two grub screws I said not to touch............
Outstanding and extremely well put together instruction video. Peter. I've not long just purchased an RM8 in .177 (with the full length barrel) after having to return the first RM8 in .22 with the shorter barrel i first purchased a couple of weeks ago back to the gun shop due to the bolt handle kept working loose, which even lock thread could not keep the bolt handle from coming loose. Now after watching this brilliant video of yours i'll know how to replace all those "O" rings should my gun develope a pressure leak of any kind. Thank you so much, bud.
Superb video buddy, could you tell me how the vasaline is used on this replacement, appreciated thanks
To lubricate the O rings. You could use silicone oil too, but in either case only a very very light coating on each O ring before they are put in place.
@@noskanow thanks, that's great
For the love of god dont use vasaline!! It degrades orings!! If you want your repair to last longer than 6 months use silicone grease only!
Hear what you say and respect your view but.........2 years on and the gun is holding pressure fine, I shoot it every week at my club and no problems at all with the replacement O rings. If the O rings were still made of rubber then I'd agree with you, but these are neoprene and petroleum jelly is fine with neoprene.
Thanks Peter - clear and logical instruction, I can follow this - when I have to! :0)
I love the sound of your engine - can you post a picture of your vessel? Commercial or sport? I have a 20ft Pacific City Dory that I use for offshore fishing in Oregon
drive.google.com/file/d/1NpreAGdlDoNSNlr8xiKE1s58yrumn_8v/view?usp=drive_link Hi, nice to hear from you. My boat Maggie is an 18ft GRP open day boat. She's 40 years old and so is the engine which is a Volvo Penta MD1B. This is me coming into my harbour in Cornwall UK after a nice day out. It's a hobby for me, I'm not licensed to fish for shellfish so I'm restricted to how many I can land in a day. It's just good fun after a day's fishing to haul my pots to see if I'm taking lobster and crab home with the fish.
Maximum Gunsmith at work! I think after watching that Im ok with parting £120 to get it done by someone professional. Lol. If i tried this id of blown a hand off, lost some parts, and took it to the gunsmith to put it back together again. 😅
Good video
Great video wish i watched it prior to forking out £1560 for a new regulator. My o ring as yours had vanished.
I hope you mean £156!
thank you sir! I am planning a larger capacity tank and as it will be apart I may as well do a full rebuild on the regulator too! great info without the fluff have a great day :) best wishes
To be honest I would have just unscrewed the lens cell ........................
Also, why not open it from the focuser end and not touch the lenses at all if there is debris in there...Which there always is with a ton of Sky-Watchers.
Glad i saw this comment and didn't try taking everything apart to remove mould which luckily was not between the lenses.
Hi don’t suppose you know why I would have air leaking out of the quick fill body as I have replaced the seals in the regulator but can not under stand why it would leak out of fill port
The fill port has two O rings in it, one at the top and one buried right down at the bottom. Did you replace both?
@@noskanow yes replaced the one at the top but did not see the one at the bottom mind really frustrated mind as the air dose not seem to be going in the bottle but straight out the top of it
@@johndoherty8681 You need to replace both of them on the fill port. The fill probe has two O rings on it as well. Have you checked them?

very nicely explained.
Excellent 👍 thanks for the info
Good video Only problem I had was getting the regulator open it was very very hard to open and I snapped the Main Valve spring they are very fragile.. If you can get a better tool to open it would suggest that instead of using drill bit and centre punch.. And it's very difficult now to get the spare part as they want to sell the whole unit instead of the Main valvepin Otherwise good instruction
Please can you tell me where you got the o ring kit from 👍

Try the bottle first make shore its tight as me and my grandad did all this to find was only the bottle needed tightening up haha.
Hi did you remove the valve from the buddy bottle? I need to replace an o ring on it and can not get the thing to budge
No. I just removed the buddy bottle from the regulator as shown in the video.
@@noskanow no worries thank you. Can't find any info on it and worried it might be a reverse thread. Thanks again for the video it's helped me a bunch!

Many thanks. Super.
How do the washers stack? ()()()() ?
Yes like that. They act as a very stiff spring.
()()()() how many joule?
A very good video with an excellent explanation of your takedown. Many thanks. 👍
Good video but no the regulator can’t be took apart as easy as in this video I had to stop my attempts at either end before it got really damaged ,I had a vice ,spanner’s, heat gun 3.5mm bits etc etc but it just would move and the brass started to chew up and I was worried about snapping the pin
Sorry that you had difficulty opening the regulator. I've had several people tell me they did theirs as in the video without any trouble. You could buy the special tool and try doing it with that, here's the link. spares.bagnallandkirkwood.co.uk/product/walther-rm8-main-valve-regulator-opening-tool/
can you control the mount via WIFI ????
Yes it is a WiFi mount controlled by the SynScan App downloaded onto your mobile device. The mount generates its own WiFi signal which you select as the WiFi connection on your mobile device by going Settings>Connections>WiFi and then selecting the mount's signal. The SynScan App on your mobile device can then communicate with the mount and control it.
Cracking little video this and very well explained. 👌😉
Another great video would be to adjust the power after working on the gun to keep it legal in the uk.
My understanding is that the video would not be allowed because naughty people could use it deliberately to make their guns illegal. When I replaced all the O rings in this gun I turned the power adjustment the wrong way trying to get it to around 10.8 ft lb which is a sweet spot for it. It tested 15 ft lb after this mistake, and that would be the problem with such a video.
