Peter why did you not just find the greatest sensitivity using the variable resister in- situ then measure its value to find the fixed resister needed to replace it.I like your idea.
I did exactly that but the sensitivity is so critical that even with 1% tolerance fixed resistors it didn't work. The only way was to use the preset.
