    We do follow Ambleside Online's bible reading guide. The rest i use it more like a book list. I even include the free read list as main reading (i do ask for oral narration). But we don't read every book. Its just too much for us. We do follow CM but just loosely. Love the concept of reading living books, narration, and copywork. So we try to incorporate those elements.

    As someone who worked as a special education teacher who primarily worked with students with learning disabilities, for many students with reading struggles phonics can feel awful to them. It is very hard and it is very frustrating. Especially for the students who excel when speaking and listening. As someone who's taught many kids to read I found the best medicine are the short and sweet lessons you're speaking about even if the program is not the child's favorite. Continuing to build the love of reading with read alouds and audiobooks will help the child continue to have that curiosity about books even if phonics is not their favorite. I think of phonics as a vitamin that doesn't taste very good. Some kids just really need it to thrive, and keeping it short but consistent is what works. One thing I might suggest for the McGuffey reader is having the child build the difficult words with the moving alphabet before they attempt to read the story. Going through and sounding the word out as building it is very powerful in keeping it in the memory.

    • @ashleymurphy4813
      @ashleymurphy4813 15 днів тому

      @@Geminipasta oh thank you, reading this warms my heart. I feel I have continued to try and follow her lead these last couple years and when I think about our homeschool alone, I am so proud of her progress. It’s when I compare her to the standards or other homeschoolers that I question our tactics. What I could also try is doing our typical McGuffeys lesson (please check out my videos for this- id love your feedback) and then just do a couple pages of Foundational Phonics for practice. Your comment is very welcomed amidst the opposite opinions I’ve received. But I am open to the various insights, of course.

    • @Geminipasta
      @Geminipasta 15 днів тому

      @ashleymurphy4813 I think doing a couple pages a day of phonics focused is always better than several pages distraught. Slow and steady can really help with burnout. I have found integrating a little bit of encoding (saying the word allowed to the child and having them break the word down into its individual sounds and either spell the word in writing or with the movable alphabet) is very helpful for increasing the memory. Encoding just a couple words each lesson to prevent frustration is best. If the McGuffey lessons are enjoyable for you and your daughter I would continue them. I do think of McGuffey readers more as a reading fluency exercise (which is an important skill) than a phonics exercise. However, mixing your McGuffey lessons with a couple pages of phonics each day sounds like a good plan. Short, slow, and steady reading lessons. I watched your reading journey video, you mentioned your daughter enjoyed explode the code. If she's having a few lessons in a row where she's getting frustrated, having her review with that program for a couple of days could also be a good and productive reset before jumping back in.

      @ thank you so much. It feels like we are very close to finding a rhythm and system that works🙌🏻 Honestly, I would love to get back to the McGuffey reader alongside the companion notebook we are using with it, which includes some spelling, copywork, dictation, cursive and narration. In your opinion, do you think doing those things on top of learning to read is too much? For me it seems very holistic.

We stopped looking through books for the words, we get the words from the activities and stories and she practices them. I also have her reading books to me and I remind her of the phonics rules that we’ve learned as we go. We just started journey 3, been doing it since mid October and I’m seeing a huge difference in her reading. Reading specialist here: give her a paper bag with phonetic sounds and have her look for things around the house to place into the bag. Your example: (ir) girl, bird, swirl, twirl, etc. She will likely not be able to find “objects” but will need to have you help her write words that “sound” similar. However, this invokes three types of learning-kinesthetic, verbal, and visual. I hope this helps!

    We shared a similar struggled with language arts until I tried something completely different that was not my “style” nor my daughters. Logic of English Foundations has been a HUGE game changer because of the strong phonics approach. It really took the struggle out of learned and made sense of the English language. She’s completed A-D and has since moved on to Cottage Press language arts which includes picture study, reading and narration, copywork and dictation, and nature study as well as their spelling/grammar/word usage section that follows the same approach as LOE. Another similar program is Spell to Write and Read or barefoot meandering Reading and Spelling through Literature which takes the Elson readers and teaches spelling analysis with the words in the stories. RSTL may pair best for your approach. Wishing you and your daughter the best!

    I love Foundational Phonics! I've used both books with 3 of my 6 children so far, with 2 boys and a daughter who is very neurodivergent. They learned to read so much faster than my other kids who used other phonics programs, and I love the fact that it's one book, not alot of extra bells and whistles to teach phonics. Alongside this program, we practice with Bob Books and other readers and then we move on to the McGuffey readers and/or Explode the Code once they've finished the second book in this program. Hope it works for your family!

      @@samanthageary8514 thank you! I am loving all of the positive feedback I’m receiving about this program. It sounds, too, like we have a lot in common with our materials. The McGuffeys and Explode are working great. Hoping FP is the icing on the cake that will take us all the way!!

    I recently found this program as well, for my son who has a similar reading journey. Your daughter and he seem very similar, very active and vocal 😆. I also had wanted to be more CM in my approach, which would have worked very well for my eldest (who taught himself to read at 5), but my younger (now 9) just needed more instruction. An excellent podcast docu/journalism series about the science of reading called “Sold a Story” made me feel much better about pursuing more phonics and relaxing in CM’s reading approach. Hopefully Foundational Phonics is a good fit for you, we are enjoying it so far as well.

    Ashley, I’m so glad you found my videos helpful on this. Like you, I seem to be drawn to resources that are not used by many. Maybe it’s the creative in us that likes things to be different. 💜 I hope your daughter continues to enjoy using Foundational Phonics & you experience the same enjoyment and success that we have. For me, I wasn’t willing to rush thru reading fluency bc I know it will impact their grammar, spelling, and writing as we go along. With my oldest, I have been very pleased to see that exposing him to all those word families, the diacritical marks, and good sentence structure he was immersed in FP has paid off in building natural spelling and story telling skills as he’s gotten older.

    That book looks amazing! I hope it works well with you. We just finished TGATB mixed with the McGuffey’s but I think we are just going to turn the McGuffey into a reader for her. TGATB was fine just really slow moving, the slow movement is not for us. We made the decision to move onto the campfire phonics and reading around the campfire. Please review in the future!

    My daughter hated teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons and caused us to take a big break from reading, but it did help me to learn how to teach. After that we started reading the Bob books and flash cards. Then we got lots of readers. We even found the All about reading books at a thrift store so we read those too without the curriculum. When we started first grade and had to school “officially” we did all about reading 2. We’re still sticking with it but even without doing the lessons she can read the stories. She has a good memory I think. We read a lot of books. She doesn’t know all the phonics rules but I’m teaching them anyways cause I don’t want to miss anything.
