1 Kings 14-16: Blind prophet sees through disguise; Egypt steals king's gold; Evil northern kings.
Jeroboam's son, Abijah, is deathly sick, and he sends his wife, in disguise, to see Ahijah (the prophet who had predicted his reign) to ask for help for his son.
Ahijah is now blind, but God informs him of her trip and when she arrives, he simply calls out, "Greetings wife of Jeroboam."
He then proceeds to give her a message for Jeroboam from God, claiming that her visit was God's doing.
He tells her that because of Jeroboam's wickedness, their son will die the moment she returns home.
There follows a string of wicked kings in the Northern Kingdom up to King Ahab. Their reigns are short, treacherous, and filled with occasional punishments from God.
In the south, Rehoboam is attacked by Egypt, who demands all of Solomon's gold. To save the kingdom, Rehoboam gives all of the Gold swords, shields, and weapons from his "Forest of Lebanon" armory. He then quickly makes bronze duplicates, polishes them, and acts like nothing happened.
Rehoboam eventually dies and is replaced by King Asa. In the southern Kingdom, God's mercy is shown in that the dynasty of King David is preserved.

They are led by the Ephraimite, Jeroboam) who had fled to Egypt, but had returned after the passing of Solomon. They wanted to know if Rehoboam was going to reduce the taxation and work that Solomon had inflicted on them during his reign to build the temple and growth of the nation. After...
1 Kings 9-11: The Queen of Sheba visits. Solomon sins by accumulating gold, horses, and women.
Переглядів 3День тому
Solomon expands his great and prosperous kingdom with armories, building projects, bridges, and international trade. In the process, he violates God's commands in Deut. 17 to NOT multiply gold, horses, or women which was the normal thing for a successful worldly king to do. After the Queen of Sheba visits, she sees that his wealth, kingdom, and political brilliance has no equal. However, his ma...

Solomon completes the temple, then builds a palace for himself, and more for his wives. He expands great prosperity throughout the kingdom, building roads, walls, and chariots. He adds gold pillars to the temple, and commissions lavish bronze work for the outer courts. He moves the ark of the covenant from Jerusalem, and brings the remaining articles from the tabernacle, which was still in Gibe...

Ecclesiastes 11-12: Conclusion: Life is an Adventure, a Gift, a School, and a Responsibility
Місяць тому
Solomon concludes his study with the admonition that life can be enjoyed as an adventure when it is an adventure of faith in God. He uses financial investments and farming as examples of diversifying life and trusting on God for the outcome. Since circumstances will never be perfect for a venture, risk, entrepreneurship, and 'redeeming the time' are great ways of enjoying life. Don't waste time...
Ecclesiastes 9-10: Enjoy life; Hard work is not a curse; Life is unpredictable; Life of a Fool.
Переглядів 2Місяць тому
Solomon now suggests that the best way to deal with impending death is to endure and enjoy. And the best way to do this is: happy leisurely meals (v. 7), joyful family celebrations (v. 8), a faithful, loving marriage (v. 9), and hard work (v. 10). He then talks about how life is unfair the strongest doesn't always win, the smartest isn't always listened to, and that "time and chance" are a real...

Ecclesiastes 4-6: Futility of the oppressed, emptiness of religion, and the joylessness of riches
2 місяці тому
Solomon turns his attention from the futility of his own life to the emptiness of the lives of others. He first looks at the oppressed (through the lens of corrupt courtrooms) and finds no benefit or upside to their trials. There are 3 aspects: 1. oppression and exploitation 2. pain and sorrow of the innocent 3. callousness and unconcern from those who chose not to bring comfort. He then moves ...

Amazing arrangement, having to account for all the parts with just the two hands! The use of the very low piano notes to simulate the distorted guitar jabs is interesting. And you reminded me of the very first time I heard this song, the amazement that it had somehow transmuted into a ragtime for eight bars and then switched back as if nothing had happened!
