Distilling with the Grainfather G40 to make an American Whiskey
Watch Dan’s take on an American whiskey using the @GrainfatherAllGrainBrewing G40 brewing system and turning it into a pot still by using the Grainfather Alembic Dome and condenser attachment kit to attach the @StillSpirits89 alembic copper condenser. Follow Dan go through the entire distillation process from start to finish. The blended cuts came together very well and the flavours had a well rounded balance of bready malt with hints of dried fruit. He's looking forward to seeing how this whiskey will progress after 6 months to 3 years, if he can wait that long!!

Nice rig!
Great video, when in pot mode do you put conditioner and ceramic beads in the pot? Or is that just in reflux mode? Just got my air still pro and watching to learn as much as I can while I wait for my wash, can’t wait to start experimenting
Nice
I really enjoyed watching this. My Still is only the the 10 Ltr one and it would be a bit more difficult to make this gin. But maybe you have got a few ore tips.
Glad you enjoyed the video - thanks for the feedback and happy distilling!
Awesome
Glad you enjoyed it!
Purchased an air still pro a few weeks back. I've completed a few washes and distillations but this have answered a lot of my questions. Thanks Dan
Thanks for the feedback - glad it helped you!
is that going against the arrow?
Does it need to be filtered by carbon?
Great video. Thank you. The only question I have is can i use the new malt pipe with a G30V2?
Glad you enjoyed it. Yes it’s compatible with all of the G30 series. Let us know if you have any more questions!
this is a fantastic video, ive been watching distilling videos for 10 years on here and i think i just found my favorite. this is a great explanation of how and why to do cuts. Great Work!
Thanks so much!! Glad you enjoyed it and find it helpful. Happy distilling!
Another great video, very informative for a newbie such as me. I’ve been making wine and beer for about 30 years but getting an itch to try something new. I have a Grainfather G30, but I’d have to buy the bits and bobs to turn it into a distiller. I also have an air still which I haven’t used as I’m still in the research stage, I just watched your video where you did an amazing job of explaining how you make cuts with the air still, a fantastic video. Thanks again for a simply wonderful job of explaining the process so a newbie can understand the process.
Thanks for the awesome feedback! Glad you are enjoying our videos! Feel free to ask us any questions you may have!
Fantastic video! Finally a video showing how to make the cuts using an air still. All the videos I’ve seen before this one state that using an air still does not require making any cuts, just collect 700-800 ml. That just didn’t make any sense too me. This is by far the best explanation of how to run one’s air still, an amazing video, thanks.
Thanks for the awesome feedback - we are so glad you found it helpful! Happy distilling!
As I'm new to this. Is there no need to runn it through a carbon filter?
Thanks for the inspiration. Was about to invest in a pressure fermenter system, but i think my main issue is oxygen contact, which thanks to you I can hopefully reduce now! My last neipa attempt turned purple in my barrel.. I'll come back and comment for my next brew. Cheers.
Brilliant. Nice to see the end to end results. Have done some molasses rum with a T500 Alembic so gonna try your honey one asap. Well presented.
Cheers for the feedback - glad you enjoyed it. Let us know how it turns out
was wondering how many litres there was in the G40 for the mash in
32 litres mash and then 30 litres sparge but you can use more water in the sparge if drain the G40 first giving you a bigger wash of 55 litres
Cheers for the content man 🍺🍻😎
No worries!!
Nice blues brews glass!!
They work great
Instead of cutting back with water you could just have had it as Honey Whiskey.
Any alcohol you don't like use it for lighting barbeques or getting the coal fire going instead of purchasing firelighters.
Copper used to remove the bad substances from the final product.
Fantastic and entertaining video and yes, I learned something. Thank you very much.
Thanks for the feedback, we’re glad you enjoyed it!
Great video mate! You broke this down into easy speak for someone like me wanting to invest in one of these. Looks like its a matter of trust your senses and patience. Thanks mate!
Glad it was helpful! Let us know if you have any questions!
Great video gave me heaps to think about cheers
Cheers!
Do you differentiate between “heads” and “fore-shot”. Toss the fore-shot, but the heads can be used to blend in - especially with fruit brandies - that’s where the main fruit nose lives. If you think you’re getting rid of methanol in the fore-shot - that’s not how methanol comes off. Even though it has a lower boiling point than ethanol, it forms azeotropes with water and ethanol, making it come out across the entire collection.
That reflux addition is EXPENSIVE. Why not get a proper plate reflux unit, or for something simple and near same price as that air still plus the reflux add-on, get a turbo 500 boiler w reflux column. Much much better result.
Watch the beer!! Some of the oils in the hops will come over and can give bitter/off flavours. I had a plan in University - me and my friends working in bars took all the keg beer spillage and I made a lot still and ran it through. Absolutely undrinkable from the hops in the beer.
Interesting stuff and good to know. Were you refluxing or pot stilling with beer? I have tried Pot still beer and yes the hops come through and I agree in my opinion ruins whiskey. With this batch I could not detect hops but thinking about it - it might work in a Gin... Cheers!
Those air still have temperature control? Is it operating around water boiling point (around 100 C) ? Or it is operation below that temperature?
Nice one man! Thanks for the video!
No problem! Glad you liked it!
WHAT!!!! Using the spanner to get the lines off the disconnects. Honestly, you could have made insane screeching noises for 45 minutes but as long as you dropped that amazing tip into the video, it would still be one of the most helpful homebrew cheats I've come across. LEGEND! Had to go and try it before replying ... but it works a treat. As it was, the rest of the video was very helpful too, thanks.
Ha glad we could provide that helpful tip! Thanks for the feedback, glad it was useful 🍻
And then you can fill little plastic soda bottles for mini tanks for dispensing on the go.
I'm confused... I see the Lid, the attachement kit, and the condensor, but not the dome...? Doesn't the Grainfather Attachement Kit come with what they call the Alembic Helmet, and that is for the G40 Lid and connects directly to the Alembic Condensor, and what Still Spirits call the Alembic Dome fits onto the G30?
First purge was almost pointless, maybe it's simpler with tiniest pressure, liquid side, full of liquid, gas post loosening. Apart from that, very smart and really helpful advice, thank you very much!
Brilliant video! I just bought an air still so this demo was super useful!
So glad you found the video helpful!! Thanks for the feedback and hope you enjoy the Air Still Pro!
Hope the Commies don't get to hear about the 400 litres of CO2.
when I was doing my countertop to stellar, I tasted water is that the tail?
Graduation WAY too small. You don't need 60 psi to carbonate or dispense beer.
I always flush the beer out the lines first.
Sir thank you for the video. I have a question can you use cheap store bought 12% wine to high proof alcohol?
Yes absolutely you can!
Where did you get your wine thief bro
Yeah it's a goodie aye. Kauriwines Wellington 👍
Hi Dan, very nice video. I was looking for this info because I own a GF-G30-V2 and bought the new V3 inner basket. I was wondering how this thing would work without an top filter plate. Now I see that the hose is curled into the basket. Your tip with the old top plate with sparging is also very welcome. I will try this the next brew. Also the mill is very interesting. Good video. Thanks!
Thanks for the video, very helpful! I was wondering if you could have the spunding valve connected direct to the fermzilla and then the outlet of the spunding valve then connected to the serving keg? This would ensure that the pressure would be constant in the fermenter and the serving keg would be purged slowly, do you think it's doable? And would it be possible to purge Starsan out of the keg?

Hi. You don’t get heads with the normal air still do you? What happens to the heads then?
Hi, yeah good question. you get heads hearts and tails on Pot still run with the Pro. Reflux is less if a worry with cuts but making a clean spirit requires some cutting with the pro. The original air still design must keep heads under control somehow but I believe making cuts with that unit will produce a better spirit. hope this makes sense, but please get in touch with lob for any further advice. Cheers Dan
I got 5 of those ….. and can tell you - this is a junk !!!!!!!
Hey. Great video. Just a query about taking cuts on your reflux run. Seeing as you are going to do a 2nd run, would it not be ok to take everything other than the methanol, thus doing a stripping run, then take your cuts from your pot still?
Hi 👋 A reflux has greater potential for leaving behind the less desirable alcohols so yes doing reflux cuts isn’t really necessary if you are going to do a second pot still spirit run. If you have the time to cut on a reflux run then taking out the heads can help with the pot run’ although with the air still pro it is so convenient to just let it do a complete run and let it switch itself off saving you time so once again no need for cuts on a stripping run. I hope this helps 🍻
This is exactly what I’ve been planning. Came here to see how the g40 went not expecting to get a complete walk through. Have 10kg of frozen overripe bananas and 5kg wild honey to ferment as soon as I get the g40. Thanks for the great vid - would happily watch more
Awesome! Glad you found the video useful - we’d love to hear how you get on!
I have that lid too. Gonna run a clean, sacrificial, stripping and spirits run in few hours... My rig is 2.5" Vevor football still with additional 500mm (bit copper packed) pipe, sight glass and deflagmator. More 2.5" stuff is on the way, a whole relfux tower in fact. Im going to stretch it loong. Probably support with ladder. Anyways, idk why i ended up with such gimmick size, because you cant get much elements in that league and getting bigger is too expensive, for now... Lack of content on G40 is indeed bad but please, even worse is using plastic with high ABV alcohol. Ditch silicone too. My 2 cents.
Great job Sir! Appreciate the info..
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, fun video. I love my air still pro. My very first run was just like your beginner of this video. And yes, the reflux mode really cleans things up. Yes, gins in the air still are tasty and fun to experiment with. Have fun, enjoy the craft.
Great to hear you love the Air Still Pro! There sure is lots of experimenting to be done! Happy Distilling 🍸
@@leagueofbrewersbro how could we maintain the temperature of air still pro .. i m wondering to buy this but still does not know if we can maintain temperature or not .. pls help
