Peace and Joy and Welcome to Drumhiller Farms , thank you for watching our channel. We are a first generation regenerative farm, where myself Nathan along with my wife, Allyson and our blended family of 4 boys raise grass fed and grass finished beef, pasture raised chickens and pastured pork, with a strong focus on soil health. Everything that we do is for the soil! Our farm is located in south central Michigan in a small town called Parma. Neither Allyson or myself were raised on farms and honestly, neither one of us ever thought we would be farming but this is something that God has called us into and we have to constantly rely on Him for insight on how to make this farm work. We also own and operate a business in Jackson, Michigan called The Grate Haus Fireplaces and Stoves, you will often here us refer to this as "the city business." Thanks again for watching our channel and don't forget to hit that subscribe button and stick around for a while!!!

What kind of stocking rate per acre are you all using?! Pastures look amazing
What kinda grass do you have?
Hedges are great for coppicing. No need for any heavy or specialized machinery to harvest it. Just reading Coppice - Agroforestry by Mark Krawczyk. There are some videos on YT as well.
Well now I look at you in a whole different way

Great videos as always. Always can’t wait to watch them. I don’t have cattle and probably won’t get any but definitely learning from watching your channel the guts on those were looking nice. Love your words and prayers. Listening to the end it reminded one day we were listening to the priest he said “ when you don’t make it to church for the week you are starving yourself from Jesus.” Something like that has really hit home with me. Thanks for sharing. I was actually curious how Russ Wilson’s flow valve would work in northern climates. Will you be using it throughout the winter?
@@KPVFarmer wilson land and cattle, Russ Wilson, has a youtubr channel. He discusses the waterer on it. Search by his farm name and water tank, you will likely find the video(s).

@ , thank you, it’ll definitely be on the shortlist to checkout in the design of the new watering systems on our farm.
Do you think you could have grazed that farm once in the spring and had as much stock pile?
@@TimBinns68 honestly that’s a good idea, I didn’t really need it then though, be best after 2nd round but I definitely would have that much there then, but biggest thing is the rest that this farm has had, not just about the forage
@@drumhillerfarms6858 Thanks for the input. I have a field that I was going to stockpile but want to graze it once in the spring to help take the pressure off the rest of my other fields. I was hoping to go longer before feeding hay but September stopped all my growth this year. Northern MI here.
@ I think it will still work very well
In education we have an equation that 10 percent of the kids are 90 percent of the work. I guess it is the same with turkeys…enjoy the content. You are a real person. I appreciate the ethical production of meat. Thanks for your content. Pigs are really smart. You could train them to eat in your trailer if you could keep your trailer next to the pigs for a few days. Less rodeo. Of course you loaded the pigs pretty easily.

I’m in New Mexico and I have so cool season grasses so I hand sow wheat seed in my native grass pasture and I graze it and the animals help take the see to the soil and I pull the animal out and now I have a good amount of wheat growing in my native grass pastures. I don’t want any fescue or Bermuda grasses I just want native grasses and wildflowers. Weeds do grow some and I love them they are by far more nutritious than grasses but after a couple years the weeds weed themselves out.

Happy Thanksgiving! I'd love some progress videos of the pastures you plan on leaving throughout the growing season next.year. Really like the idea of leaving a section for the wildlife. That's going to have a lot of ripples of interesting benefits on the other pastures.

Happy Thanksgiving! I really like how you're managing your native grass and wildflower planting with the non-selective grazing. I'd love to hear more on that because I am planning on creating a native planting also and graze it non-selectively with our sheep. Thanks! Great content as always.
@@campt91 thankyou!
I put sheep on my new farm this summer. I have way more land than my sheep can handle. It's going to take me years to get this neglected property in shape. The good news is that I should be able to graze 365 days a year while I'm building up my flock. I might even add a few cows next spring.

You guys do a great job. Managing this along with the job in town is a lot of work and I like your attitude to keep improving. Looking at the pig pastures in the wooded areas and beside your pastures in the video, are you planning on cutting out more of the junk trees to get more sunlight on the ground and thus more true silvo pasture? Salatin's pig pastures look like beautiful diverse cattle fields after 75 - 90 days of recovery with good timber trees more spaced out. Yours look fungal dominant. Also, he doesn't do any cover cropping because the pig disturbance, seed bank sunshine and rain do a great job. Love what you guys are doing.
@@whitshane3511 you can’t see the pig pasture from this video. It’s pretty good looking stuff in there right now.
@drumhillerfarms6858 isn't it a lot of your cover crop that you're putting in there? Also, the last video you did not too long ago showed a lot of little trees in there, right?
@ it’s probably about 60% wooded. It does grow a lot of forage in the spring.
@drumhillerfarms6858 What about knocking that down to 20% - 30%? That's what Salatin and Judy do with their silvo. More forage, more diversity, less inputs (maybe hay now and then), more money.
i just watched this video of the drought conditions in your area. We have been dealing with drought here for 5 years in Southern Saskatchewan. I have been Regeneratively grazing for most of this time on some of my acres. Slowing down helps. but eventually choices have to be made as to herd size. I'm fortunate that I have more acres than cattle. Even with the droughts I have increased the quality and carrying capacity through the droughts. nature is amazing. Rain will come!

How many acres do you need to keep this amount of head. This year i'm entended grazing season about three weeks, still too short but two yours drought is hard to grow anything.

How deep deep is your water line? I am over on the west side of the state and will be putting in some water lines within the next year or so.
@@aaronscovill5161 42ish inches
I do not live to far away from Nathan's farm. I have installed some underground water lines in our area for a couple of customers at 48". Most areas of lower michigan building codes say building footings are set at 42" to prevent heaving and be below the frost line. Hope that helps.

Stockpile looks great, just started the total grazing this year myself ,I understand your thinking about coming back to stock pile but my thoughts are would you gain more days and save labor ( set up time ) by slowing them down and higher consumption rate ,please don’t take this as a jab just my thoughts
@@freddieconner-ey2xs I don’t know, I have slowed them down a little from when I started. There is so much grass there the stampede a lot of it, it’s hard to get them to have 90% harvest efficiently on it
