    For us newbies - is the benefit of a preamp just to add gain and some flavor to the mix before it hits the audio interface? Thanks for all you do!

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist 3 години тому

      Hey great question! Mics put out a signal that is far too low to be recorded. So it needs to be amped up before it can be recorded. Preamps bring a mic up to line level. Most interfaces and recorders today come with tiny modern preamps built in, but they are flavorless and sterile. In the old days they were made with tubes and transistors and transformers and all kinds of parts that created a sound we’ve all come to love (40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, etc). So, yes. Hand-built preamps that replicate the parts used in the old days impart a wonderful sound to the mic. All the big studios in the world use various outboard preamps to achieve that sound. Thanks for the question!

    hello guys! should i get essentials or not i need a audio recorder to record the sound of my motorcycle engine.(probably under the seat) i dont need any other features. should i get the h1 essentials for $100 (saw some videos with distortion at high revs under seat) h4 essentials for $200 h6 essentials for $270is the quality way better in the h6?or should i get other brand ? sry im kind new on this

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist День тому

      Hey. The distortion happens because the mics themselves have a max SPL. This will happen with most recorders. To get around this, I would get a 32 bit recorder with XLR inputs and then a couple of dynamic mics like the Shure SM57 and mount them opposite each other. There is no physical way to distort a 57 OR a 32 bit recorder.

    • @HenriqZ-ep1ys
      @HenriqZ-ep1ys День тому

      @@TheRecordisttheir mic themselves of a h6 , hn4pro and h1 has different quality? btween h6 and hn4pro , there is diferrence in the max spl them? or just diferent number of channels? Because from what i see in the internet he hn4 pro recorder sounds better than the h1 ( for motorcycle engine sound porpuse) thanks my friend

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist День тому

      @@HenriqZ-ep1ys hey. The mic quality is better on an H6 than an H1 but the SPL remains limited because they’re condenser mics. Dynamic mics like the 57s are impossible to clip. If loudness and distortion is what you’re worried about, dynamics are what you need.

      @@mickeymessstudios109 that’s a great question. Here is my response: 1. Austrian Audio OC16 is a great mic. Made in China. Smooth and rounded. Takes EQ well. It comes with a switchable high pass filter. 2. Roswell Mini K87 is another great mic. Very smooth and rounded with a big bottom. Sounds finished on acoustic guitars. Takes EQ well. Made in USA. No options or switches. Just point and shoot. 3. sE4400 another great mic. Rounded sound. Flat response. Sounds finished on acoustic. Takes EQ well. Made in China - but in their own factory using their own developed capsules, and hand built. 4 polar patterns, high pass filters and a pad switch. • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist 2 дні тому

      Hey. Well, they’re completely different mics. The 4400 has no transformer, no color, just flat and rounded. It’s clear, transparent goodness. The LA-320 on the other hand, has a vacuum tube in there. It’s dark and colorful and has saturation and character. The 4400 is small and has several polar patterns. The LA-320 is larger, requires the included power supply brick, and has a few switches but none change the polar pattern. 4400 = clear and flat LA-320 = dark and colorful

      @@yashbansalaudio oh I see. I wasn’t saying the DCM6 was bad. Just that dynamics are a little different. If I had a choice, I’d go for the DCM 8, but the DCM6 will be just fine. Also a simple Shure SM57 with a good pop filter would be my other choice. $100. But it doesn’t have a built in in-line preamp like the sE Electronics ones do. If money isn’t an issue, I’d go for the Shure SM7dB. What interface are you using?

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist 4 дні тому

      Hey. Well, the F2 - while seeming to be in the Zoom F class of recorders - is actually an H class recorder. So, the F3 has the really nice preamps, as does the F6, F8n, etc. the F2 has preamps like the H series (H1n, H5, H6, etc). So, noisier preamps.

I've heard percussion sounds from these (I think some Bollywood people use them now as they sound good on Tabla), acoustic, violin.. everything I like. Probably wouldnt be my first choice on cabs, but for fast picking/shreddy stuff it should come across better than an 87.

    Love to know what you think of the Rode Broadcaster mic for voiceover work. 20 year old mic still being produced with no real advertisement on it. And on the Rodecaster Duo it has a unique setting on the EQ for it, showing Rode still support this in 2024. Love to know your thoughts. Also video request... when do sales happen on Audio gear, as you may have noticed I'm in the market to upgrade from my Yeti Pro. Rode Broadcaster is top of my upgrade list, with the SE4400 in 2nd place, know you know :o) Love the vids BTW and keep up the sterling work.

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist 6 днів тому

      Hey thanks! Well, I don’t have any experience with the Røde Broadcaster. I’m not a fan of Røde because I find all the Røde mics I’ve tried cheap sounding. If you ask any pro, they likely wouldn’t recommend a Røde. But that doesn’t mean the Broadcaster is a bad mic. I just don’t have experience with it, nor do I hear much about it in my audio circles. The 4400 is incredible. But maybe you don’t need all the polar pattern options of the 4400. If not, the 4100 is the same mic without the polar pattern options. And cheaper. $300. That one I can confidently recommend.

    • @TheRecordist

      Man, I know what you mean. The NT1 is still better than the NT1A, but honestly not by much. The Mini K87 will help you out immensely in that department.
