I never knew there were so many ways to measure paper! I like using A5 paper for journaling been using half letter blank paper 3 hole punched white, 5.5 x 8.5 100 GSM. For letter writing I also like using A5 paper, Strathmore Sketch paper 50 or 60 lb with perforated pages. Makes it easier to rip the paper out, it's a duller color than the journal paper. Giving it more of an aged look and it has a textured feel to it. Works great with my script typewriter, gives the impression of being hand written. I've also used office supply labels for addressing packages and for Christmas cards. There self adhesive. Since the cards themselves are to thick to go through a typewriter. I've also used buniness card stock "Brown" for labeling filing cabinet draws. They comes in sheets, the Brown color gives them an aged look. Some of my typewriters go back to the late forties. Sets a sort of theme if you will, the brown makes it look like the labels are from the same time period.

With regard to your paper size discussion, you should look up and provide a link to the “Paper Size” article in Wikipedia. The ISO 216 standard defines all the “A” paper sizes, plus many other regional standards, in gorey detail. ISO 216 is adopted in most of the world except, ironically for your video, North America and parts of Central and South America. All the info on that Wikipedia page will make your head spin!

What fun! A REAL paper geek! I learned most of this when I was learning graphic design and print production in the '90s. We got all our different paper stocks at a company called JC Paper in the Central Valley of California. I still have a collection of some of my favorite papers ostensibly to use for creating resumes. A letterpress is very different from a typewriter although they do both produce print by pressing type onto a page. When I was first learning to type in high school in 1974 we were taught to always type on two sheets of paper for a nicer print, especially when using lighter weight papers like onion skin (which was considered more elegant). Copy or laser print paper is just fine for everyday typing, although we often used a variety of papers in our laser printer. Of course a laser printer is less forgiving of various paper textures than a typewriter is. Yes, typewriters were often used to print onto postcards, gift cards and index cards. That's why many typewriters have those little card "teeth" up by the type lifter. My wife and I bought our last new typewriter in 1998 (it was a "word processor" typewriter) because we thought we might still need one for carbon paper and NCR paper forms. Of course, we never saw carbon paper or NCR paper after that. Ha! Carbon paper to type on a Barbie typewriter without a ribbon! LOL!!

Not sure what happened. I got one of this channels videos on my recommendation and watched. I didn’t know anything about a typewriter. Now all of the sudden a month later, I have an old royal typewriter and I can actually (sort of) use it. Thanks for all the restoration and use videos.

I'm in the process of bringing an SC Electra 220 back to life. The belts are still there, but I think they are slipping when I turn it on and need to be replaced. I'm also finding the other issue you have; my pet (cat) constantly wants to play with me while I'm trying to work on the typewriter. ,':/

Don't let OxiClean 3 in 1 sit on Smith Corona Silent it melts the crinkle paint. Not sure how I'll fix it. Any ideas?

Just discovered your channel a couple weeks ago, as I’m starting to re-engage with my typewriter collection (54, too many!) after a long break. I second your comments about maintaining a Royal QDL! Bought a pink one for my wife 20 years ago, and it came with a non-functioning backspace key. Try as I might, I never could get it working. Keep those typewriter videos coming! Given your love for blue typewriters, I’m surprised you don’t seem to have any Olivetti portables (Lettera 22 or 32, or even the Studio 44). Cheers!

I've given away a few typewriters to those who seem typewriter curious. The fountain pen community often calls the pen version of this "penabling", so I've been trying to come up with an interesting and custom phrase for this activity for the typosphere...

I have a Remington Monarch in good condition with only 1 issue that the ribbon holder does not pop up when a key is depressed. Any advice re adjusting etc?

Nice series of videos. My wide-carriage MS9 from '67 is a pristine beauty. Please help me ... what can a full-sized late 60s office typewriter do that our MS9s can't? BTW, learning classic 8-finger typing will open a whole new world of pleasure for you with your machines.

I have only two typewriters, both in mint condition, a 1967 Olympia MS9 wide carriage, and a 1949 Underwood Leader. What can you do on your Royal HH that I can't do on my wide carriage semi-portable Olympia? I'm wondering if I need to start looking for a big desktop standard (trying to justify getting one).

Aren't there elements that need to receive grease/lubricant to function well?

For cleaning the metal keys : would it be judicious you use lacquer thinner ? Or cellulosique thinner ? 😊

Have you seen the Barbie Collegiate 1000 (1986) Typewriter or the Barbie Dial Superstar (1977) typewriter? I recently saw both of these models on ebay, and thought they were quite interesting! The Superstar appears to take a dual color ribbon.

when i set out on typewriters i had a list of what i wanted so i would have a list of what to look for that fits my goals. at first i bought a few just because i wanted klickety clack but when i researched them i made the list. but as an 80s computer user i wanted to make a library with a "typing through the ages" display. i have 2 script typewriters i like using for xmas card making, so that also influenced my list. the list is i needed an old black gothic looking one, one with a gimick and i live in upstate NY in between Remington and Smith Corona home bases so i wanted local brands and something locally sold and owned, which i have a locally made, sold in a store in my hometown, corona 3 folding typewriter owned by 1 local photographer for its life. i wanted 2 machines of the same model that are different, which i have 2 that are completely different as an early and late model. i have ones with 12 inch platens for scrapbook paper, i have a 6CPI that seems to have a unique typeface, and i have an electronic typewriter thats thermal with the printer port that lets me plug old computers into it. the only things on my list i dont have are a Commodore branded typewriter as the missing link between my computers and typewriters, and a working selectric with the old english golf ball for my xmas cards. outside of my list i have maybe 3 or 4 that dont fit into the list i can lose without losing anything i need, but one i keep because its an electric that is super satisfying to type on, and anothef is a similar model but uses a cartridge instead of a normal spool which is reminicent of printers of the era lol

Great video! I have about 30 typewriters as well but no desktops. I agree with you about ultra-portables but the exception is my Olivetti Lettera 22...that is a fantastic machine with all the features of a midsize. My five keepers are the SCM Sterling 5AX, the SCM Classic 12, The Hermes 3000, Olympia SM7, and the aforementioned Olivetti Lettera 22. Honorable mention is the Olivetti Studio 45.

It could not have been more than a day or two ago when I thought, “oh it would be really cool if Sarah did a collab with Joe!” Mazel!

I ALWAYS drool over your Royal Futura 800. It's my dream machine. We grew up with a Royal KMG on a table in our playroom. I learned everything I ever knew about typewriters messing around with that machine over the years. I don't know what ever became of it. When I decided to try to recover the touch typing skills that I lost over Christmas break when I was taking a typing class in high school I decided I needed to use a standard manual typewriter because that's what I initially learned on. I found a Royal H on Facebook Marketplace that looks VERY much like your grandfather's old typewriter. It almost works but needs a LOT of cleaning. I initially thought it was a Model 10, but it's an update on that old design. I'm fascinated with the decimal tabs it has. I first learned about and only ever saw these in desktop publishing software. I never imagined I would find such functionality on a hundred-year-old typewriter! Still looking for a KMG I found a KMM again on Facebook Marketplace. This one works pretty well, but it's missing six screws that hold on the cover so I have to use it open, much like the Model 10! Also, the glass-topped keys are so dark I can barely make out the letters if at all. Since I wanted it to re-learn touch-typing on that's not important, but I use the Model H keyboard as a reference. These Royal Standard typewriters are CRAZY heavy, just as the old KMG from my childhood was. I really wanted a portable and the portable I wanted was the Royal Futura 800. I never found one but when my sister was cleaning out her house, my sister gave me an Underwood 319 portable (that may actually be an Olivetti 92) that works just fine. I regained my touch-typing skills over three days using a "How to Type" guide from Royal, contemporary with the KMM I was using. The keyboard practice was ideal. But I have little time for nostalgia and my typewriters are now put away. I also have two Smith-Corona electrics, an older one that doesn't work right and a very late "word processor" model that my wife and I bought on open-box clearance when a local appliance store when out of business, without a manual, which makes it nearly useless. We bought it in 1998 thinking that we still might have need of a "real" typewriter some time. We never did. I love Joe Van Cleef's channel, but I don't agree that it's necessarily a better way to write. You're still my favorie. I love the fact that those Barbie typewriters even exist!

Thanks for this, only thing I wish it included was HOW the ribbon threads around the various posts. I'm just guessing with mine, and would have loved a shot of the ribbon threaded on this (with the cover still off) so we could all see how you passed it around and through all the various ribbon holders.

Great video thank you. I completely agree about turning the typewriter upside down. I found the following inside my Oliver number 9. Tinsel, pine needles, a penny from the 1940's, a marble and several matches. No joke. That and a load of crud and fluff. Very rewarding though.
