This week in the shop I am making souvenir cutting boards for my campsite, I share a small but powerful laser engraver and talk about tree tents! It's just about peak season for the leaves changing colors and The Great Smoky Lookout has been busy, that's my campsite. It's been years in the making but now I am sharing my little oasis in the woods, the place I go when I hit a creative wall. Check...

I've wanted to add a tree swing to a special spot on my campsite, it has the perfect trees for one. This is an original design that uses tree inspired arm rests, leftovers from a cutting board, and a mix of hardwoods including Ash, Brazilian Cherry, and Sapele. This was a really enjoyable build with a little head scratcher on how to hang it up, I hope there are some ideas you can take away from...

Do the screws for the feet hold well in the end grain? I would think they would wiggle loose over time or if you bumped them.

Awesome cutting board, but Titebond 2? I thought you had to / should use TB3 since it's waterproof? I found this video trying to figure out this question since I want to build a walnut end grain board, I was concerned about TB3 white glueline showing, but it doesnt look like they make TB3 in dark. Although they say TB2 Dark is water-resistant, not waterproof like TB3, so maybe it really wont matter.

If you had a decent sander with 3M mesh sandpaper and a dust extractor, you wouldn't need to constantly blow the saw dust away. All that does is make your shop dusty and lungs too if your not wearing a mask. Seriously, if you make a bunch of cutting boards, the right tools makes the job easier and faster with better results. A Mirka sander is probably the best but the 3M sander is good too and there are a few much cheaper knockoffs out there as well that are significantly better than a $100 Dewalt orbital sander.

LOVED the Walnut board. Thanks for the tips. Here is a safety tip for you. ONLY expose your blade enough to cut the material you are working with. If an accident happens, you will only get a small cut vs having parts of you hand (s) cut off.

So many good tips! I love it! I’m curious if you have any suggestions to keep boards from warping and cupping after planing but before sanding and oiling. I don’t always have time to finish so I have to come back a day or two later and things have started to warp on me. I’m also doing more thin boards. Like half inch or so.
