You have sincerely inspired me to try and build an end grain cutting board. I'm sure its hard enough to build an end grain cutting board, but to also film it, edit it, and narrate it... that's a lot of work!! Thank you for all the work you put into your video productions. Awesome job once again! I've only made six cutting boards, made my first end grain board this weekend using walnut, cherry and (I think?) soft maple. The edge grain boards I've made had good contrast between the different woods. The maple on the end grain board is darker (grayish?) and not as much contrast as I was expecting. Guess I need to get some hard maple? I've recently subscribed, enjoy your content. Thanks for your efforts. :)
Thanks for the Sub Lawrence, I hope you find the channel helpful and resourceful. I would steer away from using soft maple on a cutting board and use hard maple instead, its way more durable and will stand the test of time (although I do understand its more difficult to obtain).

My favorite cutting board videos! Looked in your list, didn't see it but do you sell your jig for corner drills for the feet? I'd love to buy one.
The piece was beautiful and very well finished. I have difficulty making the side crimp at the top of the board. I saw the jig you use but I couldn't copy it. Do you have a video explaining how you did it?

I have viewed several videos on different cutting boards you make. I would love to know the dimensions of your boards.. this one tells some of that but others such as the sunset doesn’t.

Beautiful! And very informative. I notice you don’t use cauls on the edge of the cutting board while the glue is setting up. Is this ever a problem for you?
It's really never been a problem, if you have a few pieces that are bowing up or down then they can help but otherwise I apply slow even clamping pressure to keep things from shifting.
what are you using for the wax? and is there a benefit to the mineral oil bath as opposed to just wiping it on? Beautiful boards - and your house and property look amazing!
Hey there! I've found when working with endgrain its best to soak the board versus wiping it, you want to let the oil really saturate the middle. Working with face grain or edge grain wiping is sufficient. I make my own board wax using a mixture of beeswax and mineral oil.
Beautiful board! Do you need to use the router sled if you have a drum sander though?
I do, usually after the router sled the board needs to be smoothed out, a drum sander helps although you could use a belt sander. Endgrain makes you work for it!!

I normally soak each board for 5-10 minutes, let them dry and then repeat. Endgrain can get thirsty!

New subscriber here and I love your work! Do you have any plans for your flattening jig? I put a few end grain through my planer before I realized that wasn't super safe. I do very shallow passes, but now I'm nervous lol. And your jig for attaching feet. if that was available on your website, I'd totally buy it

Do you ever use purple heart in your boards? Very nice work, by the way.
I've personally never had the opportunity to get my hands on some but I think it would work well certain designs, maybe one day.

I feel that every time i watch a video of yours i see different blades in your table saw for each shot. How many different table saw blades do you actively use?
Good eye! I use an Amana tool crosscut blade, a CMT ripping blade, and a Freud Combo blade. I've been really pleased with all three and if your interested I've put links in the description of the video.

I just come across your channel and I’d say you do some beautiful work. But I’m wondering why do you put the feet on before you oil the board or are you taking them off before you oil it?
Very observant, I add them before the oil mainly so I know the bottom is 100% complete. I don't like to tamper with it after the oil, I also like to know beforehand how the board is going to sit on the countertop ( double check there is no wobble) and I like to use the feet to aid in the drying process. I can take it out of the oil bath and then sit it right on the countertop to dry, you really don't want to put a wet board flat on a surface, keeping airflow air underneath is important.
@@thewoodplank4376 yeah I make boards as well so know airflow under the board is important. I would have thought that the oil would soak into the rubber and potentially make them slick.
What do you use to finish it? Looks amazing
I make a 3:1 beeswax/mineral oil combo. It really brings the board to life and its an easy way to keep them maintained.

It's mineral oil initially, followed by the oil wax mix.
How do you know the right preasure when clamping .im worried about leaving a glue line or squeezing out too much glue and it breaking in half after a couple of months
I get the clamps tight enough to where you can't wiggle them, If your not sure, I would lean on the side of over tight.

"8/4 hard maple puts up a fight every time." You need more HP and a Glue Line Rip by Freud.
Definitely more HP, but I've actually been happy with my CMT rip blade. There was some added pressure in this board that contributed to it binding.
I haw a million cutting board videos and made a couple myself. In almost all the use is cauls is mentioned and that this is very important. I see you don’t use these. Is that because you will sand after the first glue and flatten after the second? I always use them but I find it rather cumbersome sometimes and it is still not 100% flat. If I could do without the cauls that would make it easier. I use pipeclamps to the underside is flat anyway. Thanks for you advise.
Hello! I would definitely recommend using cauls and find it to be an important step. I only use them on the endgrain glue up, the reason for using cauls is to help apply even pressure across the end of the board. They don't do much for keeping things flat but more for strength and dispersing even pressure.

Keep things flat just by clamping slowly and evenly. Double checking along the way to make sure nothing slipped up or down.

Is poplar ok to use for cutting boards
I wouldn't recommend poplar for a cutting board, its a little to soft of a wood.
What is the wax product you put on? Is it softened before you use it?
I make a Beeswax/mineral oil wax, works great and food safe.
