DJ Solitare's Retro Goa Explorations, Episode 68 - Eco: UFOlk
The 68th in my Retro Goa Explorations series of videos in which I present some of my favourite 'Goa Trance' tracks from the '90s.
In this series, I go back to my first experiences in the Goa Trance electronic dance music movement starting in late 1994, drawing upon my recollections of hearing specific music at certain events and using my classical music background explore the elements that I believe make these tracks so great.
The series is currently focused on music I first encountered in the '96-97 season, starting in September 1996, when I moved to London. The track here is one of the handful released by this artist, and there's quite a fascinating and unexpected backstory to all of his trance productions: Eco (aka Ott) with what I consider to be a masterpiece, UFOlk. After I give some background about the artist and the track - and how it came to be published - I present the music simultaneously with my observations; after some closing remarks, I then share the track without my commentary.
Two sets where I played it include my first set in Japan with the Solitare/Solitaire moniker (I remembered to record partway though this track):
soundcloud.com/djsolitare/spectrum-5-23-mix
And a more recent one in Canada:

wonder why he didnt do more of these kind of tracks powa tune
First time I heard this track, I thought that it may be Transwave (people sending sticks and stones at me 😆). Only a few years later, I found out Eco, but no information about it. Thanks again Mark for this.
absolutely love goa trance. been listening to it since 9 or 10 years old back in 1999-2000. Thanks mom and thanks to a certain site called something with bay in it and you could download those wicked tunes. met a guy on a forum when i were 14 and he had all the electronic devises to make electronic music, and he also had all goa cds from 1990 up to 1996. i remember he enjoyed watching me make sounds in his studio. He also was a pyro technician and we made firecrackers and fireworks in his home.
Theres a track by Eco that is titled Blissville and it is one of my favorite Goa tracks of all time. Dehli dancer is a favorite too. Thanks for reminding me about this one. Haven't heard it in a while
Let's get it 💯
Once this track inspired me to compose a poem dedicated to it
Ну почему вы так хорошо говорите на английском
I know that track. That 'alien' melody is unforgatable. Dreampod might be knew though. interesting stuff!
Amazing, mang. Wonderful! The entire Headlines is the very best album ever made in psychedelic trance imo.
I started like these music more then nowdays psy respect to all the scene of course
Incredible track! Yes amazing storytelling and really has the feel of mystery, wonder and beauty, which really lifts your spirit towards the end of a night. Can't hear this without remembering epic nights 🙂. Great to know which synth made that amazing sound it it! This and the wizard remix are just something else. Thanks!
Their trademark sound made me discover how colourdrops would sound when spread all over the place. Really a facemelting experience 🙏
They created really mind blowing stories and tracks. Thanks for bringing this one Mark. ❤️
❤
What a fantastic episode! My favourite, to dance, is Dreampod, but Psychopod it's full of details, seems more like a storie.😃
I bet if they sold that Oberheim Expander, they are kicking themselves. It's one of the most epic synthesizers ever built. An old highschool friend had one and it was quite the machine.
Great spotlight on a genius music project that made mindblowing music. Two of their absolute finest tunes. Dream Pod is my personal fave of theirs. Epic!
Aloha
Resonance Mood was one of three compilations that changed the trajectory of my musical tastes, and my life. I had been fumbling around in the record bins at my favourite record stores, and although I had started to acquire bits of Goa, I was still just flirting with the genre. Then I bought Made on Earth (Blueroom Released), 3D (Tip Records) and Resonance Mood (Matsuri) all in one visit to Boom Records in Gastown (Vancouver), and nothing was the same after that. All three of these complications totally blew my mind at the time. I played songs from all three of these complications for the next decade, and I was particularly fond of this track, Lunar Asylum: Shadow Five. That said, I think my favourite from that specific compilation, both then and now, is the Manmademan track... Athalon. I hope you feature this song at some point too.
so spiritual tuneing
I got that on vinyl. ! one of my favorites.
Simon´s tracks are legendary, and all his projects too <3 I have the same problem with my name as well, if it was now i would have thought a bit more 😂
I love that modulated filter on the melody. After how many years? We finally got that "LSD" vibe. I mean there's so much in this I question who's behind it. Great compilation of all our favourite audiomemes by Lunar Asylum, here.
I just realized now that this track have some similars sounds with Hallucinogen 🤯 but totally space tribe at same time 😍 Sometimes I forget how I love Space Tribe 🙈 one of my all time favorites ❤️ Thanks for this Mark, I’m loving it 🙌😍
Actually I don’t forget that, I play Space Tribe music 80% of my set’s 😂
absolutely love goa trance, discovered it when i was 10 in 1999-2000, downloading pirated music for burned cds. then stumpled upon infected mushroom return of the shadows which i still to this day believe is a masterpiece
ADAT was an 8 channel digital multi-track recorder that meant someone could make layers of recordings before doing the final mix.
Lovely tune
Fast and funky. I can imagine the RTTS bongo drummers going furious during this !
Amazing how in the 1990s you guys would have changed the history of evolution of human consciousness, and yet almost the entire population still remains unaware of what had taken place underneath their noses 😂
Don't get me started HAHAHHAHA I listen to the EDM stuff the big-name DJs filling stadiums are playing and it's more basic than what we were dancing to 30 years ago!
❤❤❤
What an energetic blast of a ride this one. Great tune you can't help but move to. ❤
Love your Good teste😁🌸
❤️😁
wow lovely track, Carl Jung talked a lot about the unconscious collective
@7:33 - The Phreaky Tornado influence is spot on
you clearly know this track and basically the tracks you talk about really by heart, you almost take words out of my mouth which were my thoughts for so many years. and the fact you're unapologetically stoned at the same time in a good way makes it a great video. you clearly know music, and not only trance music, and its cool to hear someone like you talk when most of the scene are narrow minded folks.
Thank you for the supportive message. One major clarification, though - I don't smoke anything or take anything...at all. Didn't think I look stoned - can imagine some of what I say makes it sound that I am haha
White blotters, Tyssen St E8
Wow this is cool and first time I hear it! ❤
i have searched for this track for at least 10 years , thank you!
Awesome track. oood and Mr posford always seemed like they had a sound making box that others did not. A quirky polish. ❤ x
Shit! I'm late! I thought this was at 2
oh shoot... messaged you this am... 😐sorry you missed it - always appreciate you tuning in when you can!
@@DJSolitare my Facebook checking is not always timely... is 1PM PDT the new ongoing or was it a one-off change from 2?

Fantastic track ❤ I loved the 'uh oh'!
Always liked this one a bit faster, still great and fun to listen to.
Brilliant tune and one of the best ever written. So much epicness in one piece of music. ❤
I love this track. This and Magellanic Cloud are peak Green Nuns. Thank you for this exploration!
FMJ. CC's 🤔
No idea what the initials stand for haha
I didn't want to possibly reveal anything, I guess if the initials don't make sense....Im incorrect on what this weeks track might be!!
