Baroque Guitar Improvisation Lesson (Motion and Consonances)
Here are some of the rules that I'm always aware of when I'm improvising polyphonic lines. In this lesson, we'll cover:
🎸 Parallel Motion: Voices move in the same direction with the same interval.
🎸 Similar Motion: Voices move in the same direction with different intervals.
🎸 Contrary Motion: Voices move in opposite directions.
🎸 Oblique Motion: One voice stays on the same note while the other moves.
We'll also dive into the different types of consonances:
🎶 Imperfect Consonances: 3rds and 6ths.
🎶 Perfect Consonances: 5ths and octaves.
Consonance Combinations and Allowed Motions:
Imperfect to Imperfect Consonance: All four motions allowed.
Perfect to Imperfect Consonance: three motions allowed no Parallel motion.
Perfect to Perfect Consonance: Only oblique and contrary motion allowed.
Imperfect to Perfect Consonance: Only oblique and contrary motion allowed.
In the video, when I'm talking about going from a perfect to an imperfect consonance, I say that you can use all four motions. However, it is impossible to move in parallel motion since we have to change intervals.

Enjoy this short original jazz-inspired piece I composed on solo guitar. I crafted this composition some time ago, and I felt it was finally time to share it with you. Titled 'The Girl from Autumn,' this piece captures the essence of a nostalgic encounter, drawing inspiration from classic jazz standards. I hope you find as much joy in listening to it as I did in creating it. #guitar #jazz #chor...

This is very nice, cool piece of work
bro your voice is nails on a fucking chalkboard
Thank you for this!
@Jonathanhell5128 I respect the amount of dedication you’ve dedicated to studying Ted Greens style. Pretty impressive man
USEFUL!!!!!!
Top quality
simple lovely tutorial i love ittt
I’m impressed by the quality of your lessons and the sound of the guitar! Could you please share your setup especially the reverb settings?
Thank you so much. I plug my guitar directly into my audio interface. I have two reverbs on: one on a bus with a sidechained compressor that activates when I play, and the other is not on the bus. The one not on the bus is a Valhalla Plate Reverb, and the one on the bus is a Valhalla Supermassive.
@@johnathanhell5128 thank you so much! So no amp emulation? Impressive! One curiosity, why the side chain if the guitar is the only instrument?
@@francescomanfredi Yes, no amp emulator. The reason I put a side chain on is so that the reverb lowers in volume when I play, and goes back up when I don't play. This prevents the reverb from playing over everything when I have very active lines, which would turn the sound into a soup 😂 hope you understand. I'm not the best at explaining.
Merci beaucoup !
I’d love to learn to play like Ted.
Intoxicatingly wonderful.
I learnt playing using a pick and I have respect for anyone who can fingerpick I tried to learn I just couldn't do it special the bass notes with thumb and melody with the fingers and people don't get into the acoustic side like Chet atkins blew my mind it's just amazing to sit and watch someone who is that talented on guitar it's like poetry
I learned using my fingers and have respect for anyone who can pick fast and accurately. People who can hybrid pick well especially impress me
Why do all guitar masters have those boobs?
Hi Johnathan. Do you do private lessons? If so, how can I get a hold of you?
Thank you for the comment. I don't offer private lessons currently, but I plan to in the future. I'm currently pursuing a master's degree in music business, and after completing it, I plan on giving private guitar lessons on Baroque improvisation. I can send you a message when that happens. I will also announce it on the channel 😊
@@johnathanhell5128 Thank you so much for the quick reply Johathan! The Baroque ideas are exactly what I'd like to learn more about. I'll keep an eye out for your teaching announcement. Good luck completing your studies!
Thank you Johnatan, it seems my 2024 is like your 2017 🤞
I bought Teds book "Chord Chemistry" when it first came out. A deep dive into an endless stream of chord options. Ted is truly a giant in the world of guitar.
I got a wedding gig out of a quick arrangement I did of this song! My guitar player friend had me crash with him and mentioned that his fiancée was obsessed with this song. When I woke up at 8 AM and everyone else was sound asleep, I pulled up a lead sheet and my unplugged electric and by the time Jon was up, I had a fairly complete arrangement ready to roll. It wasn’t quite this sophisticated (and certainly not this clean) but definitely one of my favorite songs that I’ve learned for a wedding.
Beautiful playing in your example of what you use this for! Really like your sound too. This will require quite a bit of practice to get into the fingers. Thanks for sharing!
Very interesting exercise you created for yourself. Fascinating stuff, thanks for sharing!
This is so inspiring ! Thanks a lot for sharing !
This is great!!
Beautiful
So good! 👍
I love this! Your dedication to Ted's wonderful memory shines through this video, and your playing is so exquisite and intelligent. You're an inspiration - thanks so much! I'm heading over to the triads video now!
Very nice lesson! Have you complied any study materials to help us see all of these instantly as we play? That would be worth paying for.

I wanted to stop by and say how much I admire the work you have put into your study of Ted’s work. He was a brilliant dude, and you are carrying his torch beautifully; I am trying to follow suit as time allows! Many blessings to you my friend.
Magnifique !
Gorgeous. I've ben enjoying your playing a lot lately. Thanks for sharing.
Such a beautiful arrangement Johnathan!
many thanks for these tips, they are very useful as I try to approach this type of playing/thinking on the guitar!
Subscribed! A beautiful video. Really makes me want to learn your system for finding chords on the neck. Hope to see a video on it. Thank you
Thank you so much! I'm really happy you liked it. I will make another video, focusing more on the system :)
Sounds cool
Please keep it up !
i see ted greene i press like
Dude, this and your other Ted Greene video are both so inspiring. Makes me want to grab the guitar right now and get to work. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video, you the man
Fantastic video, I can tell from hearing your arrangements that you really absorbed some of the concepts from Ted and your system is fascinating. Some beautiful arranging, Ted would be proud! Incredible work my man, this video has genuinely inspired me to pick up my copy of Chord Chemistry again <3
Thank you so much for your kind words! It means a lot to hear that you found the video inspiring. I'm glad you enjoyed the arrangements, and your support truly means a lot to me!
you talk slow and unengaging. its hard to learn when listening is worse than reading a textbook, which is a shame because these are good lessons and insights with great clips and playing. hoping future viewers have it in them to power through
Yes, I agree with you. I don't speak English very often since it isn't my first language, so I tend to focus more on speaking correctly. However, this can make me sound very robotic and unengaging. I will try to be more engaging in my upcoming videos. Thank you for the feedback. 😊
@johnathanhell5128 you speak better English than most native speakers. I appreciate your calm demeanor and had no problem staying engaged with your content. My first time watching your channel 😊 And that outro piece you were playing is beautiful! Is there a name for it??
@@stevecrockett6619 Thank you so much! I'm happy that you liked the video. The thing I was playing in the outro was improvised, so it's not a specific piece, but I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
@hiroprotagonitos looks like you are the one who doesn’t have it in you to power yourself, and the real shame is actually that, and definitely not the author’s approach to his own content. Thanks for finding a time to comment.
Don’t be an ass, he’s posting this because he wants to not because you are owed a product. His English is great as is his playing.
Magnifique !
wow!! great craftmanship. great composition
FOR THE KING!!!
Very nice work, thanks for sharing and great playing! Did you use something like Fux for getting examples for exercises, or did you get your start with the Ted Greene videos? Cheers!
Ted Greene was the inspiration for me to delve into counterpoint. Following that, I studied it further through Alan Belkin's videos on species counterpoint. Finally, I utilized Johann Joseph Fux's book. Additionally, I tried to learn and listen to pieces for further inspiration :)
@@johnathanhell5128 Super work, sounds great and it must be satisfying to play. It's very easy to listen to, it's interesting to follow the lines. Thanks again and I'll check out your other videos.
@@johnathanhell5128 Hi again Johnathan, I've watched several of your videos and they're just great, really really super playing. I'd love to explore this playing a bit myself, but of course am overwhelmed with the amount of material. Given that you have already progressed far along the path, I'd like to verify your steps. You started with the "applied counterpoint" videos by Belkin? I'll check those out, thank you. Did you immediately start applying those to guitar? I had Fux at one point but am going to get it again. And I guess you quickly worked out the different chord inversions/opened/closed to get them in your hands, as you said.
@@jz4901 I used Allen Belkin's videos for improvisation exercises for guitar. They are meant for composers to practice writing counterpoint, but I find them excellent for practicing improvisation. You improvise the cantus firmus, then simultaneously try to harmonize the top voice. I can give you a link to a playlist where he goes through 1-5 species counterpoint. ua-cam.com/video/yPHC9Zf9s04/v-deo.html Practicing inversions to ingrain them in your musical memory is beneficial, but also practicing intervals and embedding them in your musical memory. Begin with 3rds and 6ths in various positions and stretches, such as 10ths, 13ths, and 17ths. These intervals consist of 3rds and 6ths but with different stretches. Hope this helps, and thank you for watching my videos! ☺
@@johnathanhell5128 Thank you very much, really appreciate you taking the time to help me get started. Cheers!
Great video!
Génial, merci !
Congratulations! I’ve attempted to learn this a few times and haven’t gotten very far with it. Do you have any advice for someone wanting to learn this? Thanks in advance!
The first thing I started with was using species counterpoint. There are a lot of videos on this subject covering five different species. Typically, this subject is for composers who want to write polyphonic music, but I used it for practicing guitar improvisation. hope this helps :)
